Johnson Elected Speaker, Vote Held Open, Two Republicans Switch

Republicans held the first vote open, so Johnson officially elected in round one.

Rep. Ralph Norman (R., S.C.) and Rep. Keith Self (R., Texas) switched their votes under pressure.

Johnson is in.

Good luck. Nothing has really changed.

It is going to be very hard to pass legislation without support from some Democrats and that alone likely means bigger budget deficits.

Addendum – Late Drama

Mike Johnson was re-elected House speaker on the first ballot after some late drama, with President-elect Donald Trump forced to intervene. Two Republicans changed their votes after initially opposing the incumbent.

Three House Republicans—Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Ralph Norman of South Carolina, and Keith Self of Texas—had initially denied Johnson a majority by voting for someone else. But Norman and Self switched their votes, giving the win to Johnson.

Trump spoke by phone with Norman and Self after the initial voting–telling them to stop the nonsense and back Johnson, according to people familiar with the discussions. Johnson didn’t agree to any specific concessions, a Republican lawmaker said.

Several hard-right House Republicans said they only voted for Johnson to make sure the chamber was ready to certify Trump as president in the coming days: “We did this despite our sincere reservations regarding the Speaker’s track record.”

It’s simply impossible to be too short on:

Good faith and following rules

And likewise, we all need to go long:

Corruption, malfeasance, and greed.

These GOP clowns held the vote open so they could bribe the two holdouts. Who knows what they got in return? Maybe a bridge, or a monument named after them.

We won’t know until the next 1600+ page CRomnibus passed by the GOP House after Johnson promised for the umpteenth time that he wouldn’t do that.

The “Freedom Caucus” has failed again … kudos to Massie for showing a backbone. They’ll all be extinct by the next Congress. It’s a uniparty, now.

Perhaps why he stuck with MJ, as he knew in a jam he would get the votes to avoid such a scenario.

I don’t care for MJ much myself, but he is much better than HJ! Trump is not afraid to be Trump, that’s for sure.

I suspect Hernan Cortes would be effective also but in a shorter time frame.

As landowners resist, Texas’ border wall is fragmented and built in remote areasAt least a third of landowners approached by state officials have refused to let wall be built on their properties. That’s forced the state to largely build on ranchland in remote areas, or erect sections that are full of gaps.https://apps.texastribune.org/features/2024/texas-border-wall-greg-abbott-landowners/

So one of the Presidents Job is to secure the border, and assure safety and security to the American Citizens. The issue obviously being a Federal One.
You’re telling me a single landowner can subvert the entire Country, State, and will of the people, and there is absolutely nothing the President, Governor, Military or anyone can do? WTF have you been watching…

Politics – the art of the possible, not the delusional. There never was a unified governing Trump majority. Democrats are Borgs, GOP not quite so Borg-Like…a real challenge when push comes to shove in situations like this. Re-electing Johnson is a responsible vote, in other words the best of bad choices. When losing only a couple votes means you lose, that’s not a real majority. In essence a semi-coalition government. *Sigh*

Mike Johnson is what happens when you take everything wrong with DC, concentrate it into a single swamp thing, and give it power to direct the governing agenda. Nothing good will ever come out of a congress with this guy at the helm. The 1500 page “CR” should have told you that. He was rewarded for his idiocy with another term as speaker with full support of the orange half wit. Anyone who thinks spending or anything else is going to get fixed with this guy in charge is delusional. Expect 4 more years of the same clown car.

“It is going to be very hard to pass legislation without support from some Democrats and that alone likely means bigger budget deficits.”

This whole fiasco shouldn’t even have happened with the so called “unified” GOP under Trump/Musk. It foreshadows a whole bunch of clownery that will be happening over the next two years until Repubs are booted during the mid-terms.

But does this mean that Congress can pass Musk’s open borders…err…I mean H1B open visa program?

There was posturing by some to show they were independent from Trump and not worried about re-election but when reality sunk in they voted with Trump.

Trump got to the two holdouts and said ‘look azholz, we only have a 1 seat majority. If we have any hope of getting anything done we need to vote 100% together from here on in, just like the democrats. Mike Johnson sucks but he’ll do anything I tell him once I’m in.’

True. But it’s better than Hakeem Jeffries as speaker, doling out the committee chairs.

Once the DEMS realized they couldn’t rig POTUS they went to work on the downballot races. There is zero logic to Trumps margin of victory and losing seats in the house.

Ticket splitting is minuscule, Once again, there were multiple 3am ballot dumps. And races in CA that took weeks to count.

Without a voter ID requirement, no mail in ballots, and absentee ballots only for cause, will there ever be a chance for a semi honest election.

Well, we get what we vote for. Too many people voted Democrat to allow the system to be changed. When the country finally goes bankrupt, the perversity is that there won’t really be anybody to blame but the voters. It’s sort of like if you want to pay down your credit cards but your spouse keeps running them up. It’s a lot like that, only divorce isn’t an option. So the bank has to cut the cards before anything can be done.

As much as we want to see major change, its simply not going to happen. The deeply entrenched bureaucrats, power brokers and Elites aren’t going to roll over. It’s going to be an interesting 4 years but not much is going to change until the whole thing blows up.
