India’s Water and Sanitation Crisis
Please consider India’s Water and Sanitation Crisis
India is the second most populous country in the world, with more than 1 billion citizens.
A staggering 344 million practice open defecation.
The World Bank estimates that 21 percent of communicable diseases in India are linked to unsafe water and the lack of hygiene practices. Further, more than 500 children under the age of five die each day from diarrhea in India alone.
56% Indians Still Don’t Have Healthcare

Drink Cow Urine
However, true believers may wish to consider India’s Leaders Claim Drinking Cow Urine Will Cure the Coronavirus
Mike “Mish” Shedlock

I’m bumping an old thread. India is the new hot spot.
India does have healthcare. What we don’t have is Medical insurance, which the west calls “Healthcare”. And that’s because Govt hospitals provides free or low cost healthcare to those who can’t afford it. That’s the right perspective….
I am here in Bangalore and it’s pretty hot here. Guess you were joking ….
India is a case of herd immunity. Time will tell if this helps with respect to Covid-2019.
For all those who say Indians will survive because we already live in filthy conditions and face dangerous viruses, you obviously believe that the 10s of millions living in cities are all washing in filthy drains which is ridiculous. Many Indians live in far better conditions compared to many Westerners living in increasingly filthy conditions in their own cities, homeless and having no place to even poop. Looking at one Ganges picture and generalizing is like looking at poop on an LA street and generalizing that the whole of the USA is filthy and third world; its as ridiculous as that!
(the worst example of silliness was we have many mini-fevers because we eat chilies everyday and since fever is a symptom we will overcome this disease merely by handling the fever – seriously?!).
All these affluent and middle class Indians have much lower immunity and in any case the new virus will kill loads of people in the slums as well as the affluent neighborhoods.
IMO, India will probably overtake China this time around as we are least prepared for it, having ignorant, greedy, crooked, spineless politicians for leadership (though I admit that that is a global problem now), an administration that still runs like in the days of the Raj (only much slower and with little application of the mind) and a medical infrastructure that will be overwhelmed and will crumble when the numbers ramp up. There will be chaos when they do.
I totally agree with everyone saying that India, Indonesia, etc will survive this better than Western countries. I know that this virus is not an Autoimmune disease, but just like how people from those countries are more resistant to the later group of diseases, it’s possible that they can withstand this better.
The fast-moving Covid-19 is spreading across the globe and just how bad things become remains to be seen but it will be ugly. The long latency period before someone shows symptoms makes it is quite possible for a person to be carrying the virus but show no signs whatever when they arrive at the airport or pass through screening.
This is not over, it is just starting. Covid-19 may be the catalyst for a global economic reset long overdue or simply a huge bump in the road. Because of hidden agendas, incompetence and a lack of testing we have no idea how far this has spread across the world. The article below looks into this subject.
Not an article. Just someone’s opinion.
I’ve been to India. Granted 25 years ago, but the germs out there would wipe most of us out in the Western World. I’m sure things haven’t changed much. I’ve seen pics of people bathing in the filthy Ganges river. If anyone can survive this virus it’s going to be those Indians.
Guess they need to run this public service announcement again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l01AMCBG0Wk
India is going to get decimated. After hearing the leader tell people to drink urine to protect themselves from it, I know that game was lost already.
However,I’d like to know where info is for Africa. China has been all over that continent, slowly building a large presence of their own. You know there will be a number of them with this virus- either ill from it or simply covered in it and spreading by contact. So, I ask, where is the information on the spread in Africa?
US hospitals reveals that they’re preparing for millions of hospitalizations as the outbreak unfolds https://www.businessinsider.com/presentation-us-hospitals-preparing-for-millions-of-hospitalizations-2020-3
And with 95% of our antibiotics coming out of China, we won’t have any time or space for other problems. This may turn out to be less problematic than we fear, but I hope nobody has an appendix that bursts.
Looking for the next Coronavirus outbreak? Look no further than right here. The John Hopkins Coronavirus tracker as of the moment shows 67 different counties with it, plus a cruise ship for a total of 340 Americans. It is out of control…and Trump just downplayed it again.
Sixty people in Spain that attended one meeting two weeks ago have caught the virus
Maybe some were from each other later, but it still shows how easily contagion occurs.
At least two large public nationwide demonstrations are due in Spain and Brasil in the coming week. Bolsonaro encouraged people to take part in Brasil, in Spain authorities are not calling off, one advice was “to do as they wanted”, but then it is a feminist theme so whatever happens you know who will get the blame.
America’s, and I suppose Spain’s as well, only real hope, is that the viral genome population in wide spread, do not seem as symptomatic as the one Wuhan faced at the onset of that outbreak. And due to it’s still outsized share of total cases, statistics on deadliness etc., is still very much influenced by cases from Wuhan/Hubei.
Some claim the virus has already broken up into two distinct, identifiable, somewhat separate lineages/strains, with the seemingly “milder” one being the most prevalent one around the world, and increasingly even in Wuhan. But even if things aren’t that clear cut, there will always be a tendency for highly symptomatic mutations to be more aggressively selected against, than milder ones. Over time, attenuating symptoms.
As the saying goes, anything which doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. Or in infectious disease terms, vaccinates you…. Which, aside from what is still likely an outsized share of the world’s best equipped and most cutting edge researchers and research facilities, is about it, as far as America’s hope in dealing with this is concerned.

Following remedies are prescribed by two elected members of Modi’s parties.
It was shown on many TV Channels in India.
Govt. has officially endorsed traditional system of medicine called Aurvedic, Unnani and also medieval Homeopathy. These are placebo medication for the poor.
In the Great 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic India had the most fatality of 17 million which was almost 4% of population then.
Things have worsened since with huge population explosion in Urban areas.
The idea of personal hygiene is foreign to most. Bad habits like spitting, not cleaning hands after wading the body shithole with water and left hand, sleeping like sardines packed in small stuffy places.
It will be a disaster if there is no political will.
It will be a disaster even with political will.
Unless COVID-19 turns out to be depresswd by warm weather.
I’ve been asking this question from early Feb on this and other fora. Why is India, the second most populous country showing ONLY 3 cases and why is no one bothering to ask WHY?
I believe India will eventually overtake China in cases and deaths (even the correct numbers from China) and the only way this can stop is either 1. An effective vaccine is found in time and/or 2. Indians have much higher resistance to this virus (which could be a distinct possibility given the appalling state of hygiene in this country).
Kram, I’ve been asking the same question, too. I’ve come to the conclusion that to ban flights from India would hurt the corporate oligarchs who rely on the cheap labor coming into the country. Bezos owns the Post, so you won’t get any honest info there.
I wonder too, if India won’t report anything because it fears isolation.
Aside from perhaps a few East Asian countries (Taiwan, Singapore, perhaps Vietnam and others), reported numbers of confirmed cases, is a function of tests performed. Not infected individuals.
The two (tests, infecteds), aren’t entirely independent: As symptomatic individuals increase, tests almost inevitably will as well. But unless there is an explicit policy (and the resources to follow through are available) of testing widely and aggressively, testing will inevitably lag infections by a good while. Which, assuming exponential growth in infections, means tested, hence conformed cases, can be orders of magnitude off compared to actual infections.
They are obviously concerned
“28,529 people are under community surveillance and are being monitored.”
Also Japan just withdrew a few million visas from Chinese and Koreans
COVID-19 in India would test the theory it is shy of warm weather.
I think that test is already underway in the Middle East and the answer is, warm weather doesn’t faze it in the least.
Northern Iran is rather cold and dry weather. Similar to Wuhan.
The city of Qom is indeed warmer, a desert weather pattern (lots of sun, chilly nights and pleasant days). This weakens the theory that sun lights alone depresses COVID-19.
That said a few warmer climate countries like Thailand and HK have a muted spread even though they had exposure from Jan.
I’m well aware of the argument that we cannot necessarily trust the stats coming out of said countries (or any – in fact). Yet, if would be difficult to sweep under the carpet of flood of complicated cases and deaths.
Another “better news” is the stats from Korea. They have implemented the most thorough test regime. This means they are more likely the catch mild and non-symptomatic cases. This has the byproduct of allowing for a more accurate CFR, which is way lower than otherwise seems the case. Reportedly less than 1%.
I should add that there is reportedly high level of concern in Israel and the PA. Though the reported number of cases is still small (in the teens). We will find out soon enough.
Does anyone else think there’s a connection to this coronavirus being gene edited with HIV at a CCP lab and that CCP scientist admitting to gene editing Chinese babies to be resistant to HIV a few months ago?
Seems very foolish to rule out such a freakish correlation. That would likely mean an accident, could US sneak it in then unleash it? Would China unleash it on their own people, semi-contain it, then watch it mutate into an ethnocentric targeted killer of whites, blacks, etc? If any of that is true, human civilization will end soon enough, so I’m inclined to believe it was an accidental virus spill.
It’s guaranteed in the US as well. While Indians don’t “have healthcare” (wherever that means), even those in the US who supposedly do “have healthcare”, still don’t have coronavirus tests. And the few who do, aren’t allowed to to use them for testing….
Then again, what are the idiots to do: Combined, the intellects of both the Indian and US administration, don’t even match that of a single coronavirus particle.
In America, the morons believe the cure is to print more money. While in Modistan, they believe it is to ban money. That’s the extent of both their understanding of anything at all.
Tests are becoming more available. That is obvious. There are 333 confirmed cases in the US, and as of a couple days ago there had been only 440 tests done, of which 20% had been positive, a much higher percentage than other countries. I would guess that if there are 333 confirmed, that would mean over 3000 tests have now been done. The tests are coming back faster, too. Not long ago they were taking 4 days, but recently at least some are coming back the next day.
There was supposed to be a million and a half available by Friday, turns out the number was 75,000
“Combined, the intellects of both the Indian and US administration, don’t even match that of a single coronavirus particle.”
How dare you make such an insulting statement? I demand that you withdraw your statement and apologize to Covid 19!
Not having healthcare means that when you show up at a US hospital it is legally required to treat you regardless of your ability to pay. For 56% of Indians that is not the case, probably because they can’t pay cash up front.
You should try showing up at a US hospital coughing, and see how “legally required” they are to test you for SARS-COV2….
Here, there and everywhere, if you get to a doctor while displaying symptoms of an obvious ailment, he won’t send you away. A bunch of half literates chasing ambulances and preening around on TV babbling about “laws” have nothing to do with it.
Problem is, in India possibly (but only possibly) even more than here, is that there’s not much the doc can do in a third world country more concerned about printing and/or banning “money” than about anything useful.
Absent test kits, he doesn’t know (although may be better at assessing than the average Joe, both here and in India.). And absent hospital beds, medical staff and equipment, whatever he may think should be done, won’t be.
And the idiots preening around “guaranteeing” “health care” “for all” and “legally requiring” blah, blah; are all, to a person, way too stupid, incompetent and utterly useless at anything, to either qualify as medical staff, or to build a bed of any sort, much less a hospital one.
Like the UK?
Anywhere where you have people grandstanding and making promises they themselves are not going to fulfill.
It’s always easy to preen around and make promises about what everyone else is supposed to do, without yourself doing any of it. And then to run around blaming and “holding accountable” all those everyone elses who actually do something, later on.
In general, the only promise worth anything, is the one Adam Smith’s Invisible Hand is making: There will be a supply of those things there are demand for. It may not sound as immediately reassuring to economic illiterate children, as Dear Leader telling you he going to “take care” of you, but at least it’s not purely a bald face lie. And whatever it is, it’s all we’ve got.
Note: according to the UK government, the UK health care system has “15 beds available for treatment of severe respiratory cases, which can be expanded to 28 in a pinch”. Rationing of care is already an apodictic certainty.
This is only because it’s freezing in India this time of year, especially down in Hyderabad and Bangalore. When spring comes it will warm up and the virus will disappear. It’ll be a miracle!
Don’t be too sure of that. This is not the flu.
It proliferates in the tropics as well.
Fortunately Singapore is doing a fine job of containment. The countries surrounding it are not reporting.
It’s starting to break out in Australia as well. It’s summer here.
I know, it was sarcasm and mocking Trump’s “miracle” comment.
Just looked up Hyderabad weather, it’s 92F at the moment.
I do think warm weather will wipe out the virus ….A few cases in Australia, Singapore, probably Chinese importing the virus, infecting people around them for a while, getting better soon and that, s the end of it…. Look at South America…Corona free probably because the virus doesn t proliferate during the summer….
We will see, but I think it is increasingly looking like SARS-COV2 will spread efficiently in either cold or hot weather. It certainly spreads in hot dry weather. It seems to be spreading quite effectively in the Middle East, in Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, UAE, and Qatar. It also seems to be spreading in South America, now, including Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. Australia and New Zealand are also showing case growth.
I’m increasingly thinking that, while the rate may slow a little, cases in the US and Europe will continue to grow all summer.
And if nothing else works, Modi’s Govt will claim “All Iz Well”! and this will be reported by entire media, the social media fake news propaganda department of the ruling party (also known as the BJP IT Cell) and assorted God men/women, MPs, Minister of the ruling party and the miracle will be complete.
Finally, did you know that Cow urine and dung are cheap and easily available cures for Covid-19 and the only reason it is not yet popular in the West is the greedy pharma industry.
If you use your imagination, the body temperature is 37 degrees centigrade, and the virus is doing doodle-do. How many time does the outside temperature exceed that?
India has invented cow urine, and Darwin keeps laughing.
….and yet we don t catch the flue in the summer, not even in a moderate climate like Belgium, UK, Netherlands etc , not in even in cooler Scandinavian countries ….
They don’t know exactly why, some reasons are obvious, but there have been summer epidemics also, I think swine flu in US was one. Will depend on how long virus survives on surfaces and how easily it infects once in contact with a person, or something like that ?
I already posted it, the abundance of UV light is a disinfectant to the outdoors, and the remaining colonies are likely not capable of causing disease. Viruses die by the trillions, too. The mechanism that allows them to mutate fast, single strand RNA, is also producing a lot of nonviable mutants.
