President Biden and the Need to Do Something, Just Not Now

Willingness to Do Nothing

On May 9, the Washington Post reported White House to Start Budget Talks with GOP as Debt Ceiling Deadline Nears.

The catch was only after a clean debt ceiling passed with no restrictions.

On May 11, Roll Call reported White House meeting delayed amid staff talks on budget, debt

More Red Ink

On May 12, the Associated Press reported More red ink: Congressional budget agency projects bigger deficits as debt talks continue

The National Economic Council Chimes In

On May 14, Lael Brainard, director of the National Economic Council, former Vice-Chair of the Fed chimed in on Face the Nation. Brainard Says Budget Deal Talks Constructive, Bank System Sound.

“The staff is very engaged. I would characterize the engagement as serious, as constructive,” Brainard told CBS’s Face The Nation on Sunday, warning that a default would be “catastrophic” for the economy.

Once again we are told the banking system is sound. Lovely.

And just how engaged is everyone?

The leaders were supposed to meet again Friday but delayed that session to allow talks to play out, and cast that development as a sign of progress, not a setback.

I am pleased to report we are making progress by canceling meetings and cancelling meetings will allow talks to play out.

Dealing With Repeat Liars

The amusing thing is Biden says he recognizes a need to cut the budget.

But one thing we have repeatedly learned is that his words are meaningless. He pledged to be a moderate Democrat, he pledged to be a consensus builder, he pledged to not carry on the divisive tactics of President Trump.

And just ask Joe Biden what happened to his energy agreement once he signed off on the absurdly-named Inflation Reduction Act.

In an op-ed to the Wall Street Journal, Joe Manchin says he was betrayed by President Biden.

On March 29, I commented Senator Joe Manchin Feels Betrayed by President Biden, Told Ya So Joe

Just Not Now

After Biden modified the IRA rules by executive order, I noted The Inflation Reduction Act Price Jumps From $385 Billion to Over $1 Trillion

One of Senator Manchin’s main concerns was the cost of the program. That cost went up over 2.5 times and Manchin did not even get what was pledged on pipelines.

So when president Biden says he is willing to negotiate on debt but only after the ceiling is raised, rest assured it’s a lie.

There is still no plan on the table, but meetings are supposed to resume this week. Hmm, what happened to the idea we were making progress by cancelling meetings?

McCarthy’s Key Demands

  1. Claw back unspent Covid-19 funds.
  2. Impose tougher work requirements for recipients of food stamps and other government aid.
  3. Halt Biden’s plans to forgive up to $20,000 in student loans.
  4. End many of the landmark renewable energy tax breaks Biden signed into law last year. It would tack on a sweeping Republican bill to boost oil, gas and coal production.

The first three points should not be the least bit controversial. Point 3 will happen via the Supreme Court, anyway.

I have been arguing for tougher rules on government aid for a long time.

Limit Save Grow Act

The CBO estimates a 10-year savings of $4.8 trillion. It would be higher if the IRS enforcement portion is removed.

But supposedly there is nothing to negotiate.

Hello President Biden, the Ball Is In Your Court

On May 8, I commented Hello President Biden, the Ball Is In Your Court

The debt ceiling clock is ticking away. But the onus is now on Democrats to so something.

In retrospect, I stand corrected. President Biden took the ball and left the stadium.

I think McCarthy’s demands are reasonable. They can’t eliminate the IRA subsidies cold turkey. There’s too much in the pipeline. They can announce the reduction or elimination of subsidies starting in 2024.
I think we’re at the point where renewables are going to be cheaper than traditional sources of energy. And EVs make more economic sense than gas cars, even without the tax credits. Without the tax credit and tariffs on Chinese cars, the Chinese would decimate our car industry within a few years with their EVs.

Mish,
Why do you spend so much time on silly things like run away deficits, sound fiscal policy and perpetual wars. Don’t you know the country has much more serious problems like white supremacy and bathrooms for trannies! Get with the program!

The student loan debt will likely be found unconstitutional by SCOTUS, so it’s not really much of a bargaining chip.
But, I’m glad they included it.

With a justice so stupid that she doesn’t know the difference between a man and a woman? I don’t trust the Supreme Court to rule correctly on which direction the sun will rise

I agree there’s no guarantee with court decisions, but, she knows the difference between a man and woman. We all do. She’s just being bullied by the facists who are currently in charge. We have free speech, provided you don’t say anything democrats don’t like.

You’re not the only one who sees the hypocrisy of going after pennies in food stamp crackdowns while ignoring the millions in fraud among the well to do.

So much to laugh about here. The drama never ends with the budget deadline crisis. They’ve done their fancy shutdowns before; excepting lawdawgs, who are needed to keep the slaves in line. Paid vacations if I recall correctly. So hilarious with their childish games. I also find it hilarious how Mish is always so hard on the people who got stomped on by the people he serves. Yeah, tougher work requirements is such an easy slogan to parrot. How about looking with the same judgement at the state? For the glorious state created that class. Specialists tend to have such narrow vision.
Even more hilarity greeted me at a local diner just now. FOX news. Maria Bartolomo, a more nuanced Kramer, was talking with the old Shah of Iran. He was yakking on about the people, the same people who were glad to be rid of him. Really felt it was important to take the present regime’s money and give it back to the people. He even had a plan! I’m sure it would have served him well.
And the litany of stories continued to pour non-stop from the hucksters she was interviewing. Keeping everyone very much afraid. Just so hilarious! And it gets even better! The slaves all think it’s all true just as its presented. Now, that’s a special kind of stupid.

Due to the toxicity of the republican brand and 6 years of them lying and crying wolf, Biden has a choice of 3 outcomes:
Give in – lose
Don’t give in and default, blame republicans – win
Don’t give in and republicans give in – win
What do you think he’ll choose?

Again, Joe Biden is downright radioactive. In fact, he’s going to get impeached along with Mayorkas. And then he’s going to jail. Maybe he’ll bunk up with Trump. Who knows? I’m fine with that. I want DeSantis to win anyway.

‘Win’ should be in quotes since its self-sabotage to the US, but I agree there is some logic to what you are saying. But if you really dig into it, there will be more blame on the sitting president for not reaching a deal or forcing something. But honestly with how petty politics are, I can see your playbook actually playing out, thanks for sharing.

Return discretionary spending to FY 2022 levels in FY 2024
That’s a joke with no proposal on how to do that. They can’t even cut ethanol subsidies. With all the things they have promised not to cut that will mean 20-25% cuts in everything else. Go ahead and put that on paper Kevin.

It would be great if the R’s could cut ethanol subsidies, but even they are being held hostage by local politics. Blame the Democrats, blame the Republicans. Bottom line we have lost the interest and ability to have opposing parties actually negotiate. Instead we careen from crisis to crisis as way of governing. So much fun.
