The Stock Market Casino Will Soon Be Open 24 Hours, 5 Days a Week

24-Hour Trading on Weekdays Coming Up

Please note Robinhood to Launch 24-Hour Trading on Weekdays in Stocks and ETFs

Robinhood said Wednesday that it will offer 24-hour trading of selected stocks and exchange-traded funds, five days a week. The move is part of a growing push in parts of the financial industry to expand trading beyond traditional Wall Street operating hours.

The brokerage plans to allow round-the-clock trading between 8 p.m. ET Sunday and 8 p.m. ET Friday in 43 securities, including some popular stocks such as Amazon.com, Apple and Tesla.

Robinhood will begin to roll out the feature next week, and all customers are expected to have it by June, the company says. Over time Robinhood plans to make more stocks and ETFs available for overnight trading, Chief Executive Vlad Tenev said in an interview.

Robinhood will route customers’ nighttime stock orders to Blue Ocean, a trading platform that runs a special session between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. ET. Other U.S. brokers that offer overnight trading use Blue Ocean as well. Electronic market-making firms such as Jane Street Group and Virtu Financial take the other side of investors’ orders on Blue Ocean, and seek to profit by buying stocks for a slightly lower price than they sell them for.

24×7 Will Follow

24 hours seven days a week is sure to follow.

Market makers will soon be able to profit on trading imbalances skimming pennies off every trade seven days a week. Billions of dollars in profit are there for the taking.

But we need more excitement. How about 2-hour options? Single day options are no longer exciting enough.

Cynicism aside about 24 hour stock market gambling, it’s really the next logical step. Casinos already offer the same.

“…buying stocks for a slightly lower price than they sell them for.” has given me a fantastic idea.
I will sell stocks for slightly higher than what I paid for them, then with the profits buy more stocks and do it again.
Foolproof, what could be simpler.
I feel fabulously rich already.

This has been going on for a long time. Brokerages have offered trading within their own book for decades. You couldn’t trade on one of the big exchanges, so the number of bids and asks were a lot lower. Seems the trades will be going through a small exchange that likely has a few books connected to it. And likely explains why only a few tickers can be traded. Not enough liquidity for smaller tickers. In most cases, it will be better to trade when NYSE and NASDAQ are open. A lot more bids and asks.
If this takes off and trading is 24×7, god help IT workers in the financial industry. There are a lot of things now that have to be done when the markets are closed.

That means the FTC will also have to operate 24/7.

This seems like it would increase the risk of both fraud (thin trading) and/or a black swan (if all markets adopt this worldwide and they can all go down at once in a manipulated self reinforcing spiral).

Putting all your eggs in one basket is a bad idea, especicially where security is concerned.

It already happens now. Buffett buys a stock then makes it public and people rush in to buy the stock, making him richer.
Cramer learned “Worldcom is in play,” quickly bought a bunch and sold it to those rushing to buy it when the news became public. FED mouthpieces make statements, which suddenly move the market up or down as they intended to happen. Market makers make a market.

I can already do many things online (shopping, banking, etc) 24/7/365. Trading stocks 24/7 seems inevitable.

Hey Mish…not sure if you saw the news but that liberal supreme court just sided with California on this case you posted about back in october.

The ruling, written by Justice Neil Gorsuch, protects the authority of states to enact laws to protect the health and welfare of the public even if the measures have impacts out of state. Groups that back California had warned that a broad ruling against it could limit states’ authority to enact laws about a wide variety of issues, including measures to address climate change, such as by efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by promoting renewable energy.

“While the Constitution addresses many weighty issues, the type of pork chops California merchants may sell is not on that list,” Gorsuch said.

Seems like it was siding with the Constitution, not California. California isn’t promoting renewable energy, it is demanding an end to fossil fuels and forcing renewable energy only on the states residents by an arbitrary date.

It’s odd that 24/7 trading hasn’t been done for years now. One would think that stock market outfits built from new software would be built without any offline batch processing being in the active trading loop.
For the most part, publicly traded companies would want all of their stock management and trading done by one machine, too. That would minimize the spread between bid and ask prices, lowering the cost of trades and thereby making the stock more appealing.

Does Robbing Hoods require that the trading party be sober when coming home at 2AM from a bar?
Nightime decision are the most most clairvoyant, and most regreted in the morning.

Would settle for regular brokerages allowing retail trade 4am-8pm just like the crooked trading desks can

There’s a reason Wall Street has those demons sacrificing children for their artwork. The ignorant masses have such childish minds. The market crash just got steeper.

Excellent news. Just about had a profitgasm when I read this post. bring it on. I have long wondered why exchanges weren’t open 24×7. This will make trading easier when I’m in europe or asia. I wish it were all the equities and options not just a select few.

That will change over time. This is just a foot in the door. Next, maybe Schwab will be offering regular overnight trading, followed by everyone else. Along the way, the entire Nasdaq 100 individual stocks will be included and who knows what from there?
