Trump Blocked CDC From Requiring Masks on Public Transportation

Trump is once again at odds with his top medical appointees.

This time, Trump Blocked C.D.C. From Requiring Masks on Public Transportation

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention drafted a sweeping order last month requiring all passengers and employees to wear masks on all forms of public and commercial transportation in the United States, but it was blocked by the White House, according to two federal health officials.

Most public health officials believe that wearing masks is one of the most effective ways to protect against the spread of the virus, particularly in crowded, poorly ventilated public places that attract people from all over, like transportation venues. Many feel that the Trump administration has turned the wearing — or not wearing — of masks into a political expression, as seen most dramatically on Monday evening when President Trump whipped off his surgical mask at the White House door after returning from the hospital where he was treated for Covid-19.

“I think masks are the most powerful weapon we have to confront Covid and we all need to embrace masks and set the example for each other,” Dr. Robert R. Redfield, the C.D.C. director, who oversaw the drafting of the order, said in a recent interview.

Dr. Redfield has been publicly at odds with President Trump for promoting mask wearing along with social distancing, and for warning that a vaccine for the virus won’t be widely available until next year.

Masks Save Lives But Trump Doesn’t Care

I don’t like wearing masks. No one does. But I wear then in grocery stores and shopping in general.

I don’t wear them hiking or in restaurants. But I don’t go to restaurants that do not practice distancing. And I expect the servers who meet hundreds of people to wear them.

Crowded trains, busses, subways etc., rate to be breeding grounds. The CDC mandate makes sense.

Covid Superman

Trump caught Covid and an infected a dozen more himself because he refused to wear masks.

Covid Superman (AKA Donald Trump) wants no part of mask mandates no matter how many lives they save.

Ripping off his mask may win cheers from his core fans, but it will cost him votes overall.

What if there is no virus? The CDC says they don’t have a template to use to identify whatever they’re calling COVID-19. Ironic to see a “Libertarian” panic at the thought of freedom of choice. If masks work, wear yours, you’ll be protected.

“[N]o quantified virus isolates of the 2019-nCoV are currently available…”
See p.39 and calm down.

There are plenty of other issues to take with Trump. Actually preventing unelected petty tyrants from ruling our lives, shouldn’t be one of them.

Does anything the president, CDC, or government does or doesn’t do prevent you from wearing a mask if you so choose? If you are concerned, wear a mask.

Im fairly well educated, and I dont care for the government mandating ANYTHING. The govt never gives back rights it takes. Never.

“Trump caught Covid because he refused to wear masks.”

This is a difficult proposition to prove.
Absolutely no evidence supports this statement.
–It simply is not true that mask wearers don’t get infected but those without do: the strongest claim is that it may have some effect on transmission speeds.
–The effect of being outdoors, where the smallest breeze means the half-time dispersion dilution can be measured in milliseconds because of the volume of air, is orders of magnitude larger than even the strongest claims for masks. If the Barrett event was a transmission node, it is more likely to have been the drinks/snacks.
–Where I live the public health authority still says that there is no evidence that masks are effective (as they did in March, to my initial astonishment: I thought ‘Why do they exist then?’). The assessment includes reviews of the available evidence the most recent studies. The country has the highest number of molecular biologists per capita in the world. Metastudies that the CDC lists come to much the same conclusion.

CDC itself has reviewed studies about mask usage by public to prevent influenza and found there is NO BENEFIT:

“In our systematic review, we identified 10 RCTs that reported estimates of the effectiveness of face masks in reducing laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infections in the community from literature published during 1946–July 27, 2018. In pooled analysis, we found no significant reduction in influenza transmission with the use of face masks (RR 0.78, 95% CI 0.51–1.20; I2 = 30%, p = 0.25)”

So masks are just a “feel good” measure.
And a way for Democrats and media to attack Trump because Trump does not follow the new mask-religion as obediently as others despite recommending masks and using one himself several times

Hand washing and distancing on the other hand WORKS so please keep doing that.

Watching the socialist CNN on a daily basis I notice the anti Trump narrative becoming more blatantly even DESPERATELY not to say outrageously anti Trump by the hour! It is almost ridiculous and definitely PATHETIC ! Nice C19 SCAPEGOAT Trump has become! Let me inform you however that Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the UK ‘enjoy’ 200k deaths on a 324 million population, almost like the US with 331 million people! SO PLEASE, enlighten me, what exactly is the BIG ANTI TRUMP DEAL about, as far as C19 is concerned ??

Second that. The whole narrative about it being so much worse in America, all because of Trump, does not hold water. It is not the worst in America, and Trump likely isn’t an important factor. Actually, considering the at risk population in America (obese, metabolic syndrome, hypertensive, etc), things aren’t as bad comparatively as I would have thought. [Not-a-Republican]

Discussion in other countries concerning NPIs has not aligned itself perfectly along political lines.

Yes, there are some countries is Europe that handled Covid extremely poorly, too. Is that the standard then? Keep in mind that the countries in Europe that got hit the hardest, Italy, France, Spain and the UK, all got hit hard early, before they were prepared. The US had time to prepare, and still did just as poorly or worse.

Taibbi said something the other day that reminded me how much Trump has changed. Several years before Trump ever decided to get into politics, he used to tell a story about a guy who insisted on shaking hands with him during a business meeting even though this guy had the flu. This incident pissed Trump off enough to bring it up repeatedly in interviews.

I also remember Trump saying (probably 10-15 years ago) that the Japanese way of bowing, rather than the western handshake, was superior because it was cleaner, that he wished bowing would become the norm here.

How did a germophobe like Trump morph into this guy who’s willing to risk personal harm just to make a stupid point? He was a completely different guy for most of his adult life.

Mish,

The report comes from “two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity”. Do they really exist or is this just click-bait? If there are no names there is no credibility. The time when one could believe reporters from the NYT on political matters on their word has long passed. This article is useless because it doesn’t give me any information that I can verify. I support wearing masks and I wear them when I go out so it told me something I already knew.

Could be job reprisal etc. Do you recall the most famous un-named source in American history? Deep Throat. He was real and the info was real. It was also published with fake-news Washington Post.

Where did Trump tell SENIORS specifically to NOT fear Covid?

I have seen NO such statement!

Trump specifically has stated that VULNERABLE groups need to be protected.

But it is CRAZY that under 50-year old people are freaked out about Covid when survival rate is like 99.99% if you are under 50 years old according to CDC’s own stats. (You need to calculate it from fatality numbers because obviously CDC would not want to calculate or publicize that themselves because it would ruin the Democrat’s fear porn/doomsayer narrative about Covid).

99.99% is also the same pergentace that CDC staff donates to Democrats…

If you wear a mask it has a good chance of lowering your initial viral load. If you are exposed to a little of the corona virus, your body has a better chance of developing a good immune repose before the virus can overwhelm your system. Statements like yours are what is making the narrative more idiotic.

Are you really from Brussels? If so, it makes me feel better. Maybe the USA doesn’t have a monopoly on this kind of “thinking.” Pregnancy is a you are or you aren’t situation. Sickness is not. You can be not sick at all, a little sick, or very, very sick, depending on how much of the virus came into your body which your immune system and to try to fight off. You know, a bit like taking poison. A tiny amount won’t harm you. More makes you sick. More can kill you.

So, just ignore all the real world data that shows masks do work, since it doesn’t fit with your personal ideology?

When a Covid infection starts, it attempts to shut down key parts of your immune system, and to change your gene expression. It’s a race. Can your immune system shut down Covid before Covid disables your immune system. They lower the viral load, the better the chance you have a mild case, and the higher the viral load, the better the chance that you have a severe case.

Is this some new discovery? Well, not exactly. It’s been known since about 1200 AD. Back in the middle ages, when Smallpox ravaged the world, and there was no vaccine or cure, some people practiced the art of taking a tiny portion of a scab, and deliberately infecting children with it. The children then got a mild case, and lifetime immunity.

The small initial inoculum theory has been around a long time, but there is little evidence to support it. Theoretically the inoculum and the infection route could make a big difference in the progress of the disease. However it is a very difficult thing to research without Mengele tactics. It is virtually impossible to reconstruct where/when/how exactly people were infected, let alone the number of viable virus particles they got.

Add to that the fact that each crank of the virus replication cycle is huge: it’s not like 2^2, 4^2, 8^2, but more like 2^1000 at each crank. That makes it hard to say if the initial inoculum makes such a big difference. It is true that an earlier time to use anti-viral agents would make a huge difference, since every few hours is another crank of the replication cycle.

CDC recommended people to STAY HOME if they got Coronavirus symptoms and only go to a hospital when they had serious symptoms.
This policy by CDC is responsible for over 150k deaths.

People should have been given hydroxychloroquine prescriptions over the phone since hydroxychloroquine is SAFE and lowers death rates over -50% if it is given immediately after hospital admission when people are so ill (after staying home and following CDC advice) they need hospitalization:

So 100k+ people would have been saved with hydroxychloroquine in hospitals immediately after admission.

If USA had given hydroxychloroquine prescriptions by all doctors and even through phone consultations then 89% of those who died would have most likely been SAVED because countries that prescribe hydroxychloroquine WIDELY and easily have -89% lower death rates:

Unfortunately DEMOCRATS and media made hydroxychloroquine a POLITICAL issue after Trump recommended it and Democrats and media SCAREMONGERED that hydroxychloroquine is dangerous and will KILL YOU which led to doctors being afraid to prescribe it off-label and several Democrats governors BANNED hydroxychloroquine in their states and CDC dissed hydroxychloroquine after the Lancet study which was later proved to a bogus/fraud study with totally madeup stats and Lancet was forced to withdraw it and still CDC kept dissing hydroxychloroquine,

“Ripping off his mask may win cheers from his core fans, but it will cost him votes overall”… if the virus actually gets worse into November, and yes it does look like it is starting to make a comeback. When it started here in March the spread was very rapid and the weather kept people indoors. This time around we are having really nice weather and a lot of sunshine. Masks work for covid a little bit, but the mask wearing routine will almost inevitably promote flu (influenza is spread from surfaces to hand to face).

Yes, the CDC based that on prior data from other viruses. Once it became apparent that with Covid, masks make a huge difference, they changed their advice. That’s how it is supposed to work. You start with a hypothesis, but you change it if data warrants it.

I think this was a decision planned out well in advance; the public health blogs were aware of the outbreak in December, and multiple people called the pandemic at the end of January. How much lead time did the leaders have? Lives could have been saved. Qui Bono? Not NY that’s for sure. When a public health strategy is effective, people are bored and think it was overblown…

I hope you’re right. I ate out tonight, and my waiter wasn’t wearing his mask properly, had his nose exposed. It is true that this rural county has a very low incidence of COVID…but I hated to see it anyway….there is a weariness setting in…and with Texas doing fairly well lately, people aren’t taking COVID as seriously as they did a month or two ago.

I also attended a training class with several colleagues yesterday, and I was disappointed in the way I saw some medical professionals being pretty cavalier too….in a setting where no one was watching. I would say that I could have easily picked the doctors who were Trump supporters, based on whether they themselves were wearing a mask in this social setting. We were supposed to be socially distancing too…..but it wasn’t easy in a small hotel meeting room with a dozen or so guys, one coffee pot, buffet lunch, etc.

Cloth masks that most use are USELESS.

“More research on cloth masks is needed to inform their use as an alternative to surgical masks/respirators in the event of shortage or high-demand situations. To our knowledge, only 1 randomized controlled trial (4) has been conducted to examine the efficacy of cloth masks in healthcare settings, and the results do not favor use of cloth masks.”

Federal government can recommend masks but Federal government should NOT mandate mask use because 1. it would be unconstitutional 2. cloth masks are useless and most use cloth masks. 3. surgical masks have airflows from the sides and bottom and top so they only slightly lower the possibility of coronavirus spread. 4. requiring N-95 from everybody would cause massive demand so that there would NOT be enough masks and would in essence sabotage the lives of poorer people who do not have money to buy 2 N-95 masks for every day when going to work etc. 5. many people wear the masks only i front of their mouth and leave the nose exposed and nose is the primary place coronavirus is in and spreads through (that is why they put the stick up your nose when doing the test because it has the highest level of coronavirus) 6. people touch their masks all the time to adjust it and this infects their hands so they are more likely to spread covid through their hands if there has been coronavirus patient infected person near them.

CDC director Redfield is a mask-extremist who even claimed that masks are more effective in stopping Covid than a working vaccine which is a ludicrously ignorant comment.
