The Trump administration shelved a document created by the nation’s top disease investigators with step-by-step advice to local authorities on how and when to reopen restaurants and other public places.
The 17-page report by a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention team, titled “Guidance for Implementing the Opening Up America Again Framework,” was researched and written to help faith leaders, business owners, educators and state and local officials as they begin to reopen.
It was supposed to be published last Friday, but agency scientists were told the guidance “would never see the light of day,” according to a CDC official. The official was not authorized to talk to reporters and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.
The AP obtained a copy from a second federal official who was not authorized to release it.

Each page consists of a decision tree that concludes some variation of “Open and Monitor”.
Given the page shortage, I wonder if that is the complete document that will not see the light of day (but just did). My guess is that the 7 pages are the flowchart for a larger 17-page document.
Regardless, the decision tree did not say much and states will ignore it anyway and do what they want.
Larry Lynch, a senior vice president at the trade group, said the restaurant industry is already heavily regulated in order to prevent foodborne illnesses. So he doesn’t think additional guidelines from the CDC are onerous.
“The fact is we’re probably already 80% of the way there with the mandates coming out of the food code,” he said.
In short, most businesses have decided to act on their own with standards that will soon meet or exceed the guidelines. But some won’t.
Anyway, Why Hide It?
That one should be easy to figure out.
- Trump does not want the blame if anything goes wrong following the CDC’s advice.
- The way to prevent being blamed is to not publish anything and then blame the governors for whatever happens.
- Of course, Trump will take all the credit if things go smoothly.

Perhaps the CDC having made so many bad calls thus far has something to do with it.
And perhaps because their recommendations, even if you agree with their medical impact, exact too high a price on society as a whole.
Reasonable people can agree that even if we were justified in closing down for a while, perhaps we haven’t properly factored in the damage to lives and livelihoods it might cause, and that goes for each additional week. The initial reason given was to prevent overload of healthcare system. Even in NYC, that came nowhere close to happening. So now the fear is that having locked everyone up, if we all go out again there will be a huge second wave so we should stay locked in until there is maybe a vaccine, and only that way can we be safe. Some people will agree with this sort of thinking, but they will tend to be people who can afford to wait a year without work either because they are getting paid throughout all this, or because they have enough income or assets to wait that long. People without those means are probably going to want to get back out there, especially those under 65. Many of the CDC protocols make it so hard to work or do anything or meet criterion X or Y to progress that they are simply too cumbersome.
Plus there’s this in terms of trusting anything they say:
CDC should be shut down.
FDA should be restructured and in any case should have no role to play during a pandemic.
The Swamp has done a terrible job with all this. The only hope the country has now to avoid a Depression is to stop listening to all these academic globalist centralist blowhards and get back to ordinary rough-and-tumble life.

What area do you think have a really high death rate, and what is the % death rate using the total population as the denominator? This website says that for the entire USA, there are about 2 total per 10,000. Almost all very old people. It is data like that that led the German virologist to state that the death rate is not actually very high.

I think that you citing the extremely rare case (1 single baby) you are mostly just confirming my point.
Yes, the number of deaths so far are 2 per 10,000 in the US as as whole, and 14 per 10,000 in New York. If we guess that 5% of the people in the US have been infected, and that ultimately 80% of the people will get it, that means we will end up with about 32 deaths per 10,000. Using the New York numbers, if we guess that 20% of the people have been infected, we end up with 54 deaths/10,000. Forty deaths per 10,000 is only 1.3m people, and I gather you are Ok with that, since they are mostly old anyway, so we’ll move on.
The more interesting question is how many deaths it will cause in future years. There are indications that it may cause permanent damage to the walls of the arteries, leading to heart problems and strokes even among younger people. They are starting to realize that it can lead to Kawasaki Disease among very young children, for example. I don’t expect to die of Covid if I get it, but I do expect that if it get it, it most likely will cause some permanent health effects.
In addition to the high population wide numbers from NY, there is also the case of South Korea, which managed to contain the spread by a massive early testing and contact tracking effort. They had 2% death rate per confirmed case. I can accept that Europe/US were/are massively undersampling, and we thus have inaccurate denominatiors for the death rates, but if that would have been the case for Korea, how did they manage to contain it? I assume their numbers are quite accurate. Something does not match up between the SK numbers and the various serology numbers that are popping up. My guess is that those antibody test have low specificity an thus quite a high false positive rate.
You are right. The South Korea numbers are concerning. From the way they controlled things, it would seem like they caught many/most cases, yet the death rate was far higher than the 0.4% I am hoping we end up with. As for the antibody tests, some are better than others. The best tests have a 2% false positive rate. The worst are more like 10%. So, a result of 5% positive, +/- 10% may not tell you much. The NY tests where they got 20% in New York City are more significant.
I think the real numbers are something closer to 25% have already been infected, mostly without knowing. I think that ultimately it will resolve at around 10/10,000 or 0.1% death rate.
NY’s population wide death rate is already above that. You think 100% of New Yorkers were infected?
Many problems with serology tests and the thoroughness of the studies though. Santa Clara gave a range possibly within all being false readings, or for the above study there is criticism like here
There are supposedly various studies underway, maybe some clear result eventually. I keep checking but so far nothing new.
One of the problems with a lot of “scientific research” these days is that it always has to be funded, and more often than not, the party doing the funding has some self-serving / political bias that they want to see “confirmed”, or they’ll cease the funding.
That’s just one bias.
Just as problematic, is that “studies” are part of the Ph.D. mill infrastructure, selling “credentials” aimed at little more than allowing ever greater numbers of the clueless offspring of at least as clueless wealthy dilettantes, to prance around decorating themselves with the currently popular trappings of edumecation way beyond their meager aptitudes.

I think Trump’s chances are better than most think. His followers are passionate. They will get out and vote for him. Nobody on the planet is passionate about Joe Biden. Trump made the right call. He should let it up to the states. Decisions such as this should be made locally where the policies can be customized to local conditions. After all, we are supposed to have a federalist system. The more local the better. Most of what the federal government does should be rolled back to the states, cities and best of all individuals.
