The Wall Street Journal reports Trump Says U.S. Won’t Use Force, but Calls for Immediate Talks on Greenland
President Trump said the U.S. wouldn’t use force to acquire Greenland and was seeking negotiations on the acquisition of the territory, repeating his claim that only the U.S. is capable of defending it.
In an address that lasted for more than an hour in Davos, Switzerland, he said the U.S. needs to take control of Greenland purely for security and not for access to minerals, calling Denmark “ungrateful” for U.S. action in World War II.
President Trump insisted the U.S. needs to acquire Greenland for security reasons during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte in Davos on Wednesday. He said it was worth the “price of safety and security” for the U.S. and its allies to acquire Greenland and the U.S. would need the Arctic territory to bolster the president’s “Golden Dome” national missile defense shield project. “It’s going to be safer, it’s going to be stronger, it’s going to be better for Europe, and it’s going to be better for us,” Trump said.
Rutte the Weasel
Rutte, who has cultivated a close relationship with the president in spite of surging tensions between the U.S. and Europe over Greenland, praised Trump for pushing European allies to spend more on defense and insisted NATO members would come to Washington’s aid if the U.S. were ever attacked, as the alliance did after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. “You can be assured, absolutely, if ever the U.S. will be under attack, your allies will be with you,” Rutte said.
Notice what the weasel did not say. It should stand out a mile.
Where is the statement “If any NATO member is attacked, the US will will be with you.”

President Trump ruled out using force to acquire Greenland, but he made clear that the U.S. still wants to own the world’s largest island—and isn’t afraid to use its enormous leverage over Europe to get it.

He described Europe as unrecognizable from an earlier era and headed in the wrong direction. He rebuked Denmark as ungrateful. He said Switzerland wouldn’t have a country if not for the support of the U.S. And he mocked French President Emmanuel Macron for wearing aviator sunglasses at the event.
The president called for immediate negotiations to discuss the U.S. bid to acquire Greenland. And Trump emphasized America’s economic and military might, signaling that the U.S. won’t take kindly to nations that stand in the president’s way.
“We want a piece of ice for world protection, and they won’t give it,” Trump said of his desire to acquire Greenland from Denmark. “You can say ‘yes’ and we will be very appreciative. Or you can say ‘no’ and we will remember.”
Leaders of the European Union’s 27 countries are set to meet in Brussels Thursday evening for a hastily organized summit, where they hope to agree on a game plan for responding to Trump. The politicians will address whether to use a new and untested retaliatory trade mechanism—known informally as the bazooka—if Trump follows through with his tariff threats, and whether to pursue other options to hit back at the U.S.
“Every day we’re reminded that we live in an era of great-power rivalry,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said during a speech at Davos. “That the rules-based order is fading. That the strong can do what they can, and the weak must suffer what they must.”
“The middle powers must act together because if we’re not at the table,” he added, “we’re on the menu.”
Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank, walked out of a dinner during a speech by U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in what some attendees viewed as a sign of mounting tensions in trans-Atlantic relations.
Trump’s advisers have echoed the president’s brash comments about Europe. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent dismissed Denmark as “irrelevant” in remarks to reporters before Trump’s speech.
Danish and Greenlandic officials have repeatedly insisted Trump can get everything he wants on Greenland without actually acquiring the island. Denmark has opened the door to new U.S. military bases on the island as well as new investments in extracting critical minerals.
All We Are Asking For
Trump: I am seeking immediate negotiations to once again discuss the acquisition of Greenland by the United States. We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be frankly unstoppable. But I won’t do that, okay? … I don’t want to use force. I won’t use force. All we are asking for is to get Greenland, including the right title and ownership, because you need ownership to defend it.
Note the lies and contradictions. Trump simultaneously proposes “We probably won’t get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force” while saying he wont use force.
And “all he wants” is the title and ownership of Greenland. That’s all.

It appears to me at this point, that Trump has got to let this go. His intentions are clear, and his motive of “National Security” is an issue to be certain. Given the hardware floating around, it’s obviously a strategic location, and one more than a couple are looking at with much interest.
What matters most however, is the Fact that Denmark and Greenland would need to agree to anything, concerning Greenland’s land and/or land use. It would also have to meet certain NATO criteria I believe, as Greenland is an active member.
Trump needs to secure his worries, and more well armed forces would do so, but not HIS choice to make. Denmark and Greenland should however get together on agreements of what will be allowed to occur, and within the criteria of nato. They need to place a strongly worded letter to The Trump Administration of what they will allow, and very little movement, if any to follow. Make this issue go away by a definitive allowed action they are willing to take, and stick to it.
Everyone can accomplish there goals, if they settle for less, where appropriate, and be reasonable about things. Maybe leave some potential avenues on the table, as things move forward, but assuming they are needed due to changes in some way, where and agreement can be made to address such.
