Trump Stupidly Blocks Harvard From Enrolling Foreign Students

Trump’s latest move on Harvard is likely illegal but certainly stupid.

US Bans Harvard From Enrolling Foreigners, Forcing Transfers

Bloomberg reports US Bans Harvard From Enrolling Foreigners, Forcing Transfers

The US revoked Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification, meaning foreign students can no longer attend the university. Existing international students must transfer or lose their legal status, the Department of Homeland Security said Thursday.

The blockade on international student enrollment will compound the financial pressures for Harvard. The Trump administration has frozen more than $2.6 billion of Harvard’s funding and cut off future grants in an increasingly contentious standoff over the school’s handling of alleged antisemitism on campus and government demands for more oversight.

Trump has also called for the institution to lose its tax-exempt status, a move that the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based school has cautioned would have “grave consequences for the future of higher education in America.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in April demanded Harvard submit records of any violent or illegal activity by foreign students by April 30 or immediately lose certification under the federal government’s student visa program. At Harvard almost 6,800 students – 27% of the entire student body — come from other countries, up from 19.6% in 2006, according to the university’s data.

Question of the Day

Q: Why does it make any sense at all to stop 6,000 enormously talented people who want to come to the United States to study, from having that opportunity?
A: This is vicious. It is illegal. It is unwise. And it is very damaging.

Q&A by Larry Summers. I agree on all counts.

Letter to Harvard

The Department of Homeland Security issued this notice on Harvard: Harvard University Loses Student and Exchange Visitor Program Certification for Pro-Terrorist Conduct

WASHINGTON – Today, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ordered DHS to terminate the Harvard University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification.

This means Harvard can no longer enroll foreign students and existing foreign students must transfer or lose their legal status.

Harvard’s leadership has created an unsafe campus environment by permitting anti-American, pro-terrorist agitators to harass and physically assault individuals, including many Jewish students, and otherwise obstruct its once-venerable learning environment. Many of these agitators are foreign students. Harvard’s leadership further facilitated, and engaged in coordinated activity with the CCP, including hosting and training members of a CCP paramilitary group complicit in the Uyghur genocide.

“This administration is holding Harvard accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus,” said Secretary Noem. “It is a privilege, not a right, for universities to enroll foreign students and benefit from their higher tuition payments to help pad their multibillion-dollar endowments. Harvard had plenty of opportunity to do the right thing. It refused. They have lost their Student and Exchange Visitor Program certification as a result of their failure to adhere to the law. Let this serve as a warning to all universities and academic institutions across the country.”

Noem cites no law, regulation, or policy for her actions.

Appearing on Fox News, Noem said the administration is considering blocking international enrollment at other universities.

“This should be a warning to every other university to get your act together,” said Noem.

Trump is holding 6,800 innocent kids in his stupid power play with Harvard.

Returning to Bloomberg

In addition to Harvard itself, a ban on international enrollment also threatens to have sweeping implications for the broader Massachusetts economy and a regional ecosystem that thrives off the university’s existence.

International students don’t just pay tuition to Harvard; they also spend money on restaurants and other activities and many of them stay in the area to work at the state’s prestigious hospitals, research institutions and biotechnology companies.

This action continues the Trump Administration’s assault on free speech and university autonomy, said Robert Shireman, a former deputy undersecretary of education in the Obama administration, who’s now a senior fellow at the Century Foundation.

“International scholars bring enormous benefits to America,” Shireman said. “This is a malicious attempt to chill the exchange of ideas, instead imposing centralized control of scientific and historical study.”

Services Surplus

The US runs a goods trade deficit, but a services surplus with most of the world.

Higher education is a big part of the US services surplus. US students get scholarships and financial aid. Foreign students pay the full sticker price.

The US should welcome the best and brightest minds in the world to study here.

Instead, Trump threatens to kick them out. In doing so, he is single-handedly destroying America’s research base.

Why?

Harvard bruised Trump’s fragile ego by not kissing his ass.

Please recall this all started in April when The Letter to Harvard Setting Off Trump Confrontation Was a Mistake

Oops, the letter was a mistake.

I expect the courts to quickly squash this obvious idiocy. Trump has truly lost it … again.

Trump is taking a US international competitive advantage and pissing on it to satisfy a personal vendetta against Harvard that started with a letter that was not supposed to be sent.

It’s sickening.

There is no right to a Student Visa.

There is no right to grant money.

There is no right to govt Student Loan guarantees.

End all of these arrangements with any institution that practices overt Racism or Sexism ie DEI programs and anti-Title IX policies which allow males to obtain benefits intended for women by Title IX ie Scholarships, Sports Competition, not to mention the common sense policy of female only space like bathrooms and locker rooms.

If Hollywood makes a movie about this era, it will be called The Revenge of the Unwashed.
For decades the unwashed have watched their jobs shipped offshore, replaced by foreign workers, and train their replacements while the Harvard types cooked up esoteric economic theories saying how good it was for them.

FAFO Harvard didn’t play ball so they lost a privilege. Now they can educate more promising American students:

WASHINGTON – Today, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ordered DHS to terminate the Harvard University’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) certification.

This means Harvard can no longer enroll foreign students and existing foreign students must transfer or lose their legal status.

SEVP stands for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. It’s a program within U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), managed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), that oversees and manages foreign students and exchange visitors in the United States. SEVP is also responsible for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a database that tracks this information.

Purpose: SEVP’s main function is to ensure that international students and exchange visitors are complying with U.S. immigration laws and regulations.

You might be jesting but what you say is actually correct. Taxpayers should not be paying for any educational institution including schools. Pay for your own kids, or if you want you can give money to fund scholarships.
It’s unjust that home schoolers make sacrifices for their own kids and are then forced to pay for government schools that employ mostly leftist dullards teaching DEI.
Also most people don’t realise that it’s inherently racist to force taxpayers to pay for others when those taxpayers might not have children in the country. Being n a mixed race marriage I have plenty of relatives back in Africa that I’ve helped with school expenses. Hard to do that properly when the money I have available has already had a chunk taken to school well off white kids.

“If you think education is expensive, try ignorance”. I have childless friends who whine about having to pay taxes for schools. Of course, it’s my children, raised at tremendous expense to myself, that will pay for their social security. So far, none of them has offered to write me a check for ensuring their financial security in their doddering old age.

Another thing: nearly all the $$ going to colleges from the federal government is for funding research. A few cents go to DEI-related education stuff, but aside from that education is funded by state taxes (for state colleges) and tuition. The research $$ goes for stuff like cures for cancer, fiber optics invention (internet) etc etc, that corporations simply would never fund: they need to make money.

So, when Trump talks about eliminating federal money for colleges, he’s not talking about cutting education subsidies, he’s talking about research dollars, which has made US higher education the wonder of the world and has paid back taxpayers a hundred times over.

Except SS is supposed to be a trust fund where your friend will be currently paying into and will be available when they retire. Problem is that both sides have been using that money so it isn’t really there.
Government needs to reduced to a much smaller size doing a few tasks. Protect the border (military, ICE), run the legal system, run the embassies, set standards and manage common property such as roads, parks,, waterways, the air and oceans.
Getting the government involved in providing schools, hospitals, insurance and loans is what has lead to big government and the debt/deficit mess.

No. The lowbrow conservative media personalities spin it that way and unsophisticated conservatives (which is not all of them) see it that way. The truth is it’s about following the orders of radical Zionists who cannot brook any criticism of Israel. They argue that student critics of Israel have been inciting violence but have presented zero evidence of that claim. They say that Jewish students feel unsafe but ignore that many of the student protestors have been Jewish. Israel has been indiscriminately killing Palestinians and starving them and the response in the US has been to talk about the supposed rise of antisemitism. You could not make this shit up. It’s like Norm Macdonald’s joke that his biggest fear is that ISIS would kill millions of Americans with a dirty bomb – because the blowback against innocent Muslims would be terrible.

The shooter was born in the USA to a father that fought for the USA in Iraq. He’s a 31-year-old that got his English degree from the University of Illinois. It’s not the fault of foreign students that an American citizen, born in the USA and raised by an American “war hero”, committed a double homicide.

The father actually killed more innocent people than the son, as hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, mostly civilians, were killed in the American wars conducted there at the urging of Benjamin Netanyahu, the same Netanyahu that sponsored Hamas for decades.

Harvard and other Ivy league schools have for generations been the source for personnel of the Democrat Administrative State in DC.Some Foreign Students also enter this stream of Federal Agency employment as they meet requirements. One must ask do these Alumni favor their Alma Maters in Grants and their home countries in foreign policies?

Harvard’s medical area had over $700 million in federal grants this year (highest of all schools) Trade tariffs have favored foreign countries until exposed recently.

Do you think the $700 million went to pay for people to get their MD degrees? No, it’s for research. Cures for cancer and other diseases we’ll all get if we live long enough. Neither corporations nor the government itself, except for a few agencies like NASA and NIH, are set up for or capable of doing the scientific research which has immeasurably improved the lives of everyone on this planet, more so for Americans than anyone else.

A Harvard degree is great for social networking in the professions. Meanwhile, the social engineers have taken extreme measures of fictionalizing even biological realities, foisting ill conceived notions of Marxism, which by the way were ill conceived by Marx himself. The superficiality of what wokeness presents would deeply disturb old Karl. $700M in medical research can get better results at better universities.Etc.

I’m amazed at the stupidity and short sightedness of removing Harvard’s access to international students. Having the world’s best universities is a privilege (not a right) of the United States, and the administration is squandering that.
Having global elites at elite is also a mechanism to brainwash them into worshipping America. From a purely imperialistic perspective, it is advantageous for the US to educate global elites. Now I’m sure some of these will now just send their kids to Duke, Yale, etc, but this will likely encourage some of them to instead go to Nanjing or Heidelberg.
This also applies to currently enrolled students, it’s cruel and will trash the reputation of the entire American university system. Students that are already here should be permitted to finish their degrees.
I’ll state that I’m an academic with a poor impression of Harvard as an institution who in the abstract supports the federal government incentivizing reforms. But that’s not what this. I believe and assume that this is almost certainly due to pressure from Zionist mega donors. Bill Ackman for example has been regularly blasting Harvard and Columbia on his Twitter feed.

when all you own is a television, apparently everything that occurs is a television show. Suggest you widen you information resources and seek context for the events you stumble across.

Exactly Mish. Just accept your Orange Overlord and cheer on the demise of the rule of law! The government is finally doing what it should be doing: breaking the law to crush people that are “not our kind of people”! And those people even think Freedom of Speech means that you can give an opinion that’s not ours without being persecuted! What are you complaining about Mish! /sarc

Why would it be an issue if more Americans attended Harvard rather than foreigners? Why does the US government spend so much tax money on Harvard to educate foreign students? Trump is correct.

If you have some spare time, you should try to get acquainted with facts. Foreign students are almost always paying full tuition and they are cross-subsidizing the American students. Besides that, the average foreign student is brighter than the average American student, and that’s why Harvard wants them.

Last time I checked foreign students tuition did absolutely nothing to subsidize American students. Have you looked at the cost curve of tuition in the last 3 decades ? Why exactly does Harvard receive 2.2 billion from the US government ? F that. These folks are a bunch of Anti-Semites. I say, pull it all.

Poor argument. Foreigners subsidize US students by paying full tuition, which US students, on average, do not. Has nothing to do with the cost curve (which rising tuition is, again, also paid by the foreigners).

Harvard receives lots of $$ from the US gov mostly for research. Want to clean up wasteful grants? Sure. Agreed. Is Harvard not doing enough to protect Jewish students? Yes, there are civil remedies available to make sure that legitimate protests don’t infringe on students’ rights, including Jewish students. We should use those remedies.

But to tell the world’s brightest lights to go study elsewhere is national suicide. Conversely, we should staple a green card to every engineering/medical (and many other) diplomas awarded in the US. Google how many US tech CEO’s were born elsewhere. Our dynamism is built on openness to creativity and innovation. We Americans don’t hold a monopoly on that. Trumps move is classic ‘baby/bathwater’ idiocy.

I agree with what you are saying. Problem is Harvard has being paying lip service to upholding the law to protect Jewish students. So Trump is using leverage and a sledge hammer to get them to hand over the videos and other evidence of the protests, harassment and assaults. Note that the time given for Harvard to comply is the same as the time given for international students to transfer to another university. So if Harvard falls in line then odds are the transfer requirements will be dropped.
