Violent Protests Grip France, 500,000 Involved, Buildings and Businesses Destroyed

France is in shock over weekend riots.

What Happened

Senseless destruction of historic buildings, businesses, and schools came to a head on Saturday throughout France. Up to 800,000 people were involved in protests throughout France.

The protests started with students upset over classroom size, lack of teachers, and buildings in need of repairs.

Students blockaded hundreds of schools and set fire to, or damaged, at least 24 of them. Thousands of students have been arrested since September. Over 1,000 police officers, students and school staff have been hurt.

The students were joined by unions, radical Left rioters, and opportunistic looters to break into businesses and steal what they can.

Some historic building have been heavily damaged by arson. Here are some takes from the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Twitter.

Huge Riots and Anti-Government Protests Roil France

The New York Times reports Huge Riots and Anti-Government Protests Roil France

France is reeling from its largest unrest in years, after anti-government demonstrations devolved into riots and looting that caused nationwide damage and deepened a sense of national reckoning.

As the chaos subsided on Sunday, political leaders blamed each other for the unrest and citizens looked on with shock at their cities, littered with broken glass and the charred skeletons of burned cars.

The violence marked a convergence between a weeks-old student movement for better school conditions, an emerging national movement to protest high living costs, and opportunistic rioters who used the demonstrations as a cover for looting.

The protests have heightened a sense of fiscal and social crisis in France, the European Union’s second-largest economy. The government is trying to pass an unpopular belt-tightening budget while facing public anger that has helped position Marine Le Pen, a far-right leader, as the favorite to win the presidency in an election next spring.

More than half a million people joined some 110 marches throughout France on Saturday, the interior ministry said, in the biggest day of protest since the demonstrations began about a month ago. A major union, the C.G.T., gave a higher estimate, saying 800,000 protesters had turned out.

Amid many peaceful demonstrations, rioters vandalized roughly 1,500 shops and many symbols of the French state, leading to roughly 2,000 arrests. An arson attack largely destroyed the town hall in Limoges, in central France. In Marseille, the second-largest city, masked people broke into a government building and tipped over a bust of Marianne, a symbol of the Republic.

Destructive Protests Sweep Across France

The Washington Post reports Destructive Protests Sweep Across France, with Buildings Burned and Hundreds Detained.

Violence and destruction swept across France late Saturday as protests over rising living costs, educational conditions and proposed budget cuts erupted into looting, arson and widespread mayhem.

As public anger boiled over, more than half a million people took to the streets in cities from Lille in the north to Marseille in the south, as well as in Paris, the capital. At least 1,800 people were detained and 150 police officers and gendarmes were injured, authorities said.

On Sunday morning, people awoke to images of littered streets and wrecked government buildings, the most shocking being the charred shell of the historic town hall in Limoges, which was consumed by fire with its spire collapsing into bright orange flames in the night.

The unrest follows weeks of mostly student-led protests, some also involving violence and vandalism, which have accelerated with the support of labor unions and other groups protesting the policies of President Emmanuel Macron’s government.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu blamed “far-left groups” for Saturday’s violence in several cities, adding that “criminals have joined in to loot and destroy.”

Lecornu told reporters that the government would not be “intimidated” and accused the “ultraleft ” of stoking violence ahead of a presidential election next year. “There is obviously a political battle to wage,” Lecornu said, adding that France was at a “point of no return.”

Le Pen Chimes In

Le Pen Translation

Loot, ransack, destroy, attack law enforcement: the rioters have once again poisoned the October 17 demonstrations in defense of purchasing power.

Legitimate social demands have once again been held hostage by the far left and the speeches of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s deputies, who, by legitimizing violence, viewing order as oppression and disorder as a right, seek to plunge the country into chaos.

Faced with this incendiary strategy, the French people, who can no longer bear being caught between the austerity and fiscal hammering of those in power and the insurrectionary activists, must hold out for a few more months.

We will free them from Macronist toxic policies and protect them from the violence of the far left.

Huge Riots in France Prompt Shock and Blame Game

Also consider Huge Riots in France Prompt Shock and Blame Game

France was in a state of shock on Sunday, as citizens walked through streets lined with shattered storefronts, charred cars and burned-out government buildings after the country’s largest demonstrations in years devolved into riots and looting.

The unrest on Saturday — which led to some 2,000 arrests — caused widespread damage to several symbols of the state, including a 19th-century city hall in Limoges, a town in central France renowned for its porcelain, that was largely destroyed in a nighttime arson attack. More than 600 police officers were injured, Laurent Nuñez, France’s interior minister, said on social media on Sunday.

Rioters attacked city halls from Lille in northern France to Marseille in the south, where they broke into the local government headquarters and tipped over a bust of Marianne, a symbol of the French Republic. A fire also destroyed a tourist office in Lyon, and 1,500 shops were damaged or looted nationwide, according to Alexandre Bompard, head of the French federation of commerce and distribution, who estimated that the cost of repairs could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

“I’ve never seen this before, I am disgusted,” said Sophie Vanpoperinghe, 47, as she gazed at ransacked shops on Boulevard Magenta, the road in Paris where she has lived for 22 years and which is frequently used for demonstrations.

“It feels like society is spinning out of control,” said Henri Parent, 56, a tourist from Belgium who was surveying broken storefronts in central Paris on Sunday morning.

That’s a free link with many shocking images of the widespread destruction, fires, and looting.

Videos do a much better job than words or links. Please watch this one.

Comment of the Day

Paris looks like a war zone. What is the cause? The cost of living? Mass immigration? A mismanaged economy? Excessive spending on war? A crisis of political legitimacy caused by an unaccountable elite? Europe will likely be a very different place 10 years from now.

Le Pen’s Fiscal Plan for France Cannot Possibly Work

On October 8, 2026, I commented Le Pen’s Fiscal Plan for France Cannot Possibly Work, Will Voter’s Care?

No one ever cares about fiscal sanity in France or the US.

They all lie about growth, taxes, revenue, wars, and everything else.

France has gotten away with flouting EU budget rules but Greece didn’t. The reason is France is France. More accurately France is too big to bail.

But the EU has no love affair with Le Pen, so the crisis will surely come to a head in 2027, one way or another, no matter who wins.

French Budget Deficit Explodes Into a Major Debt Crisis and Riots

On October 7, 2026, I commented French Budget Deficit Explodes Into a Major Debt Crisis and Riots

The welfare state in France is coming unglued. An EU-wide crisis is coming.

Marine Le Pen, the far-right candidate who is leading in the polls, has vowed to push France’s age of retirement as low as 60 years old, a measure she says would cost the state an extra 9 billion euros (about $10.1 billion) a year.

Her closest rival in the polls, far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, wants the European Central Bank to freeze or wipe away the French bond holdings of the Bank of France, a sum worth 488 billion euros.

“Throw it in the fire,” Mélenchon quipped.

“Throw it in the Fire”

And they did, literally, just not in the sense Mélenchon wanted.

I suspect this seals the next French election. Support for the far Left is going to collapse.

THE Uneducated do not understand that Islam is first a political cult wanting world domination like the natzies. They use religion as a cover for brainwashing and propaganda. The argument becomes increasing gray as to which group fought for a better future for France, the French Resistance or SS Charlemagne. There’s always been a strong case for the former, but as each year goes by the case becomes increasingly strong for the latter.

This is the observable evidence that the european union experiment is in the middle to late stages of winding down. No nations come to the aid of the other because each nation member is responsible for the fauliures caused by collective governance with lack of accountability. There is only the state to blame… and now it is being blamed by everyonei….including those in runnining it. The European Union has suceeded in detroyong what once was…. but didn’t hve a replacement blueprint with any kind of foundation based in logic and sound reason.

The latest western plutocratic “free market” system(post WW2) is finally on its last legs. In every “developed” country, the wealth inequality is unsustainable and the bill is ultimately on the public balance sheet. Arguing about right vs. left is for distracted citizens who haven’t thought it through. The whole model is broken and nobody has an answer for how to effectively have reset/ jubilee (see babylonians). So preach whatever gospel u subscribe too, it’ll make you feel better (left vs right). But remember this is about materialism and power, the two defining attributes of “modern life”. Too bad its a dead end as currently practiced, since humans haven’t invented the economic system to make himan society socially and naturally stable – so the cycles of violence will continue , as they always have. No country is immune, especially with morons in charge

Gaddafi possessed an acute awareness of France’s domestic vulnerabilities. During a 2007 visit to Paris, Gaddafi delivered a speech at UNESCO directly targeting France’s ethnically diverse suburbs (banlieues): [1]

His comments, originally responding to the 2005 French riots, foreshadowed the recurring, explosive structural tensions between French police and immigrant youths in the suburbs—a cycle of unrest that continues to dominate French politics. [1]

In 1789 the French King was forced (by the Nobility) to convene a “Trois Etats-Generale” due unhappiness with Royal Debts. In the past the “Noble Estate” combined with the “Church Estate” to impose higher taxes on the Commoners to deal with Royal profligacy. Not this time. By this time the Commoners had read Rousseau and Voltaire, and after taking the Bastille they imposed their own National Assembly of the People with elected delegates. Needless to say, a whole new system of taxation was put in place.

The point here is that with France in the eighteenth century, Revolution started over elites’ concerns about debt and taxes and ended up being overthrown altogether. Elites didn’t understand the powder keg that was France.

Today the leadership class seems similarly clueless. It has been putting the squeeze on basic social services like education to deal with its budget problems. France has little room to raise taxes without upsetting France’s competitive position in the EU. Under the EU structure, a country in this position must severely curtail social spending much more, as was done with Greece. The pre-EU remedies of devaluation and capital controls are no longer available. The French gave up economic sovereignty when they joined the Euro. Under the banner of “freedom”, free movement of capital and labor within the EU was a major coup of capital over labor. Now the wealthier countries of Europe are seeing the result.

Germany and Britain have similar problems. There is less of a tradition of taking to the streets in those countries, but I’d guess the discontent is running just as deeply there, especially in Germany, where Merz’s popularity is even lower than Macron’s.

Perhaps France’s street protests will spread to those countries as well if governing elites continue to ignore the economic pressures on the bottom half of the population. Much of Europe’s economic pain now is due to the U.S. and its sanctions against Russia and Iran; the consequent energy inflation; closure of the Strait of Hormuz; and higher global interest rates. I suspect people understand this, but the leaders of Europe act like they have no agency, mere vassals of the U.S.

The attitude of the leadership class in Europe and the U.S. towards the working classes seems reminiscent of Marie Antoinette’s: let them eat cake.

In short, things would rapidly improve in Europe and the U.S. with an end to Russian sanctions and the Iran war.

Meanwhile, this November’s elections may bring about a change in Congress. Sadly, nothing will change about these global problems if the Democrats don’t throw in the towel on American exceptionalism, support for Israel, hawkish foreign policy over diplomacy, wasteful defense spending, and Russophobia. This was the foreign policy under Biden, Schumer and Pelosi as it is under Trump.

It seems to me Trump’s unilateral Iran war is the biggest obvious proximate cause of the collapse of order in the Middle East at the moment. Israel also has been crossing borders and rearranging furniture an awful lot over there lately.
Credit to George W. Bush for an optional war of choice, knocking pieces out of the convenient pre-existing standoff around Iran’s western border, in the name of rapidly rewriting the economies and cultures of the entire Middle East. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and UAE do not have a lot of muslim immigration. Why is that? Because they do not accept immigrants from “politically unstable” communities. In other words, they are not stupid, and therefore don’t import more muslim clans to compete with established ones. Make no mistake, muslim’s prioritize strength of the tight-knit personal clan (zero sum competitive game), while the west has traditionally focused on generating prosperity accross the entire community (constant growth). These worldviews are fundamentally incompatible.

Almost all the Saudi immigrants are temporary workers, kept separated from Saudi society. Essentially all immigrants (aka “temporary” workers) are forced to live in either labor camps or gated compounds. Saudi Arabia historically does not offer permanent residency or citizenship through routine migration. I’m talking about citizenship, not transient population. The Vision 2030 initiative is trying to make changes, but it is ongoing.

I think you put your finger on it. It isn’t just the immigrants or the schoolkids.

Corruption and stupidity in authority eventually leads to its own overthrow. As I keep saying, it’s the priesthood (people who live by telling lies) who are doing it. They consist of the teachers, the journalists, and the judiciary. Not all of these people are intelligent by any means, and some of them do no doubt quite sincerely believe their own nonsense.

If you leave the sexual nonsense (women’s lib and so on) and the race nonsense (racial equality) out of it, the money nonsense (fiat money – money that has no value except that the government says it is money) on its own is bad enough. I don’t suppose we will get out of it now without a highly authoritarian government and much suffering, but a stable money would go a long way towards getting the horrors over with quickly.

I don’t blame the kids who are rioting and burning, by the way. Just as with the environmentalist nonsense (another kind, promoted by the priesthood, that I forgot to mention above), why wouldn’t you riot if you thought that the world was ending and that those in authority were doing nothing about it. I blame the people who told the lies to the kids. Unfortunately there are so many of them, and they are mostly so very very stupid, that I don’t see any way out of it except something like what General Franco imposed in Spain.

Maybe we shall all have to suck up to the Catholic priesthood again, just as they had to in Spain after Franco drove out the Communists.

With our government mismanagement exacerbated by essentially free money to borrow having come to an end, I expect similar discontent in the US next summer as the economy, jobs, general availability of goods and services are likely to be much less than the citizenry expects. Constricted economy will mean less tax revenue and more stress on federal state and local governments, also making it more difficult for the federal level to pawn responsibilities down the line. The huge debt run up over the last 30 to 40 years has brought forth a lot of economic activity that must at least in part be normalized in the correction process that is incrementally hindered by ever increasing debt service costs. Huge borrowing by government and the tech sector for AI buildouts, impeding trade with tariffs and torn up trade agreements, all the wars, or cash handouts if they were to materialize are not helping to solve the problem.
What a mess.

“I expect similar discontent in the US next summer as the economy,”

I doubt it. France’s population is relatively homogeneous and densely populated when compared to the US. Most Americans identify more with Musk and Hollywood stars than their fellow American. They live in their cell-phones and worship the police ( why else do we have so many cop tv-dramas?) and have been programmed to blame themselves over their leaders. Americans are largely a nation of sheep, not the iconic tough guys of John Wayne lore. Why aren’t the MAGA republicans rioting over Trump’s attack on Iran? Because they are sheep.

I discovered that France recently banned cell phones in schools and perhaps the French kids are rioting due to withdrawal from their matrix simulation.

Some people believe that, but I’m working class in the service industry dealing with many, many “peons”, myself being one of them.

A surprising number of people see that the system is bullshit, but they are so tired and still need time to recuperate from work, that they can’t get to the streets. Wage-slaverly is a vicious cycle that I’m sure is harmful to our health.

I assume as the job market collapses from AI, people will be hitting the streets.

THe number of cop-TV dramas is simply what those in power decide we watch. I doubt cop-tv dramas are the most popular stuff on user created content systems, i.e. youtube ticktok and whatever else.

I think the cop-tv situation is actually government propaganda. Luckily newer generations aren’t watching that boomer medium.

Good thoughts. I am of the opinion right or wrong that France is populated with two major population divisions; have and have nots which is a lot of the motivation for riots now as it is folks wanting more from government, the French culture and the middle east culture from the European open border experiment. That plus the lack of any progress on the political economic front should keep it hot for a while.

In our country, I foresee the drivers potentially being as described my post above and hatred for law enforcement, ICE in particular but also any overzealous enforcement potentially like the George Floyed as an example. Any politician even floating the idea of cutting spending on some pet even not so pet project could also ignite violence. I believe our citizens as a whole are not particularly tolerant of having government services cut back even though that will become inevitable by either our choice or market considerations. The one budget item that congress has no direct control of is the interest on the debt and it is turning hockey stick on a chart.

Some truth to that. In most western countries post-WWII, there was an unspoken deal. Work moderately hard, play be the rules that matter, and you will lead a fairly comfortable life (especially if you happened to be white). Not only that, but your children have a decent shot at a more comfortable life than what you had.

For better or worse, that deal is breaking down. The only thing that hard work and following rules will get you is old. Meanwhile, The Epstein Class live lives of sybaritic luxury that would make Caligula or Elagabalus think that was over the top, and they flaunt their exalted status and immunity to any law with total impunity.

This is the preview of global debt crisis.

Over 40 years global bond yields have been dropping and ended with negative
interest rate in 2020.
Every countries enjoyed the dropping bond yields. The more you take debt and
the less interest they paid.
Then the countries especially Western countries including US caught off guard
after 2020 when bond yields rise up. That is paradigm shift.
Now rising inflation, bond yields and weaker economy especially in Western world.

Welcome GLOBAL STAGFLATION !

More unrest, More riots.
Debt has reached its limit.
You have enjoyed best part of the world for 40 years.
Now prepare for the worst part of the world.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, any development that the establishment of the day didn’t like could automatically be blamed on Jews.

Crops failed? Because Jews.

Freak storm sank the royal fleet? Everyone knows that Jews not only hate us because we are so noble and kind, Jews also can control the weather.

Foreign invasion? Machinations of Jews.

King’s eldest son and heir turns out to be a rather flamboyant and barely closeted homosexual? Jews, you silly goose!

No evidence needed. Because Jews. What, are you on their side?

Today’s establishment is far more enlightened. They do not blame unwanted election results and social dissension on Jews. Instead, they blame Russia.

Given French attitudes towards elitism and inequality, I suppose that France deserves a far-left government by a year from now. The workers seizing places-of-employment and ousting the owners and managers, etc. And many of those owners and managers fleeing the country to save their lives and “freedom” (from kidnapping for ransom).
Glenn Diesen is probably right “Europe will likely be a very different place 10 years from now.” And so seems is Greg Atkinson “”Europe is already now a very different place to what it was 10 years ago and not in a good way.” (Can the Fifth Republic survive long enough to match the Third Republic in duration? And beyond that?)

P.S. I expect that the French are per capita as wealthy as they will ever be, and are now headed downward in standard of living.

See the pattern yet? Don’t worry, you’ll get a chance again a couple of weeks from now on election day and the subsequent 365 days that follow.

And this France situation now is most immediately an energy scarcity (price) crisis as much as anything else, driving everything domestically to zero sum. No, the Jan. 6 peeps and their promoters knew exactly what they were doing when they rioted in democratically-controlled DC.

Try doing the same thing in my GOP-controlled stand-your-ground state. Shout you’re going to kill or hang someone, charge at them or carry anything menacingly that can hurt someone, and you can be shot on sight. If no one collects your rioting body from the front yard before trash day, you can be escorted out with the leaf collection truck.

No one would even question the shooter when the film was shown. Lucky old, white Jan. 6 boomers!

maybe his escape plan was to one of the french towns torn up. my immediate family was in paris when the downtown was torn up about 15 years ago. the riot police locked up the dance clubs as fanciest part of paris was getting destroyed…….

Reminds me of the USA Krystal-Nacht of 2020
sold to the people as the Floyd Riots

Always reason(s) behind the excuses and distraction(s)

and those who swore to protect, are making excuses on TV
for the problems they in part or whole, created

Unhinged to compare the Floyd protests (which wouldn’t have been anything if people weren’t locked up with COVID) to krystalnacht
