How to Lose the Younger Voters in One Easy Lesson

Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance is on the defensive over his views about the childless.

A friend emailed an article this week with a headline I couldn’t wait to read: Kamala Harris Distances Herself From Kamala Harris

It turns out that the article is from the Babylon Bee, a satirical site.

Harris is doing that of course, but so is Vance.

J.D. Vance’s Basket of Deplorables

The Wall Street comments on J.D. Vance’s Basket of Deplorables

Donald Trump’s choice of 39-year-old J.D. Vance as his running mate was supposed to present the GOP ticket as modern and looking to the future. Instead the campaign has found itself playing defense against Mr. Vance’s censorious views about women who don’t have children.

As it always does, the press has been digging up the VP choice’s comments over the years for political scrutiny, and the Ohio Senator turns out to be a target-rich environment. As a Senate candidate in 2021 he told Tucker Carlson, then a Fox News host, that the U.S. is being run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made, and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable, too.”

That sounds like he was referring to Vice President Kamala Harris, who has two stepchildren but none of her own. The comment is the sort of smart-aleck crack that gets laughs in certain right-wing male precincts. But it doesn’t play well with the millions of female voters, many of them Republican, who will decide the presidential race.

The remark has gone viral on social media and is being portrayed as an example of chauvinist views. They’re mocking it on TMZ, a sure sign that this is Mr. Vance’s first big cultural impression, and not a good one.

Mr. Vance went on “The Megyn Kelly Show” on Friday to repair the damage, calling the cat-lady line a “sarcastic comment” that didn’t mean to denigrate single or childless women. But he wasn’t at all apologetic.

“I know the media wants to attack me and wants me to back down on this, Megyn, but the simple point that I made is that having children, becoming a father, becoming a mother, I really do think it changes your perspective in a pretty profound way,” Mr. Vance said.

He’s right about that, but then why didn’t he say it in 2021? One possibility is that at some level Mr. Vance really doesn’t respect people who make different life choices. Politicians often reveal their true beliefs when talking to supporters, as Hillary Clinton did when she sneered at the “basket of deplorables” who supported Mr. Trump in 2016.

Mr. Vance has also put some policy substance behind his cultural views by saying in the past that the childless should pay higher taxes than other Americans. “If you are making $100,000, $400,000 a year and you’ve got three kids, you should pay a different, lower tax rate than if you are making the same amount of money and you don’t have any kids. It’s that simple,” he told the Charlie Kirk Show podcast in 2021. The podcast with Mr. Vance has vanished from the show’s website but has been quoted widely in the press.

Bad Policy and Bad Politics

It’s bad policy to use the tax code for social policy because it creates complications that add distortions. Pro-natalist tax policies haven’t worked where they’ve been tried.

It’s also bad politics. Conservatives used to believe in a neutral tax code that didn’t play favorites, but Mr. Vance is suggesting the code should be used as a political and cultural weapon against people who don’t share his values. “Raise taxes on the childless” isn’t a winning campaign slogan.

RINOs Galore

Trump and the MAGA crowd like to call everyone who disagrees with them a RINO (Republicans In Name Only).

But there’s much more RINOism at the top of the ticket than you might imagine. I will do a follow-up on this idea, sure to get panned by the MAGAists who don’t recognize the RINOs in the room.

Such stuff rates to make this a much closer election than most think. This election is not in the bag.

Also consider In the Wake Biden’s Campaign Exit, Trump Steps Down to the Occasion

In a balanced attempt to offend everyone, as I often do, let’s discuss Kamala.

If You Thought Biden Was Bad

Kamala Harris is off and running with a mind meld of the most progressive policies of Biden, AOC, and California governor Gavin Newsom.

For discussion, please consider If You Thought Biden Was Bad, Look at the Promises of Kamala

I have on four occasions been accused of being extreme Right and Extreme Left in the same day.

Mentally split this post in two pieces and you will understand how that happens.

This election is a nightmare for Libertarians and independents who both wanted a better choice than what we have.

Low birth rates are primarily due to prosperity. It’s happening all over the world. Remember when China was limiting reproduction and aborting girls ? Well their birth rates have now also dropped below the replacement rate.

Per the US for nearly twenty years… the media including above use only the negative ads 24/7 to manipulate their favorite and trash the dissidents 24/7 without a thought to objectivity or policy differences and execution. So many still believe in the 24/7 for years trashing of the evidence in the Hunter laptop that cemented Biden’s win. It worked.

The cost of living..water, electricity, gas, cable tv, housing, food, insurance, phone plans, internet, property taxes..everything is less expensive when there is more than one individual in the household to amortize those costs.
Health insurance is particularly instructive. Look at your employer’s health plan rates. You could have a family with 10 children and you will pay just slightly more than twice the amount a single coworker will pay for health insurance coverage for a family of 12 ! The cost of living for a single individual is significantly higher, yet the individual personal exemption is the same whether you are married or not. The tax code is already tilted in favor of families.

We don’t reproduce and that is how cultures die.
Yes child tax credits favor families, thats obvious, but maybe its to incentify us to reproduce.
I have no problem investing in our children’s future its just we are going about it the wrong way.

Young people are not having kids as a lifestyle choice. The usual suspects continue to have children out of wedlock, the same as they always have. The political class really has no problem with the status quo. They want to import workers from other countries because they are more compliant, and will continue to do so regardless of whether native born have children. They’ve been doing so since the 1960’s when there was no demographic imperative. The US population continues to increase despite the reduced replacement rate of American citizens.

You say that like it is a good thing.
I see more young American women walking dogs instead of pushing baby carriages. But this is the Northeast. And the West Coast. Both think the rest of the world is just like them.
Its not. And thank God for that.

Young women are choosing to go childless because young men can no longer afford to provide for them. A long time ago, we had national policies designed to ensure the mass employment of young white men. We ended that in the 1980s.

Those young women supporting themselves, is that a bad thing? Should we deny employment to young non-white men and women in general so that young white men can have jobs?

“This election is a nightmare for Libertarians…”

Because it’s a nightmare for liberty. As well as for freedom and anything else of value. Hence a nightmre for America. As well as the world. Period. No different from every other election since at least 1870.

Government has done NOTHING but grow, hence liberty has been nothing but trampled on, to an ever increasing degree, by every.single.administration for at least 150 years. To an ever accelerating degree. Triply so, since all constraints on completely unconstrained totalitarianism was removed in 1971.

There is no such thing as a “conservative” American who champions higher taxes for people who don’t have children. Since there is no such thing as conservative American who champions any an income tax at all.

Income taxes were a purely progressive invention from the get go. They simply can not ever be part of American conservatism, any more than fiat money and restrictions on either speech or guns or trade, ever can. Anyone championing any of those delusional pathologies, is a progressive, not a conservative, and hence a de facto RINO, by definition.

I suppose it is possible to claim conservatism in, say, Spain, is compatible with whatever the Inquisition over there was up to back when. But not in America. The Founders very well laid down the blueprint for what true American, non-RINO, conservatism, must forever refer to. Progressive income tax schemes simply never were, hence never can be, any part of that.

I’m having a hard time with JD’s comments. Doesn’t he even have a basic understanding of the Catholic Saints? Mother Teresa, yes singe, no children, but she dedicated her life to helping others. Doesn’t JD know that 1 out of 4 families are without a father? LOCK HER UP, that he and others say about women (and that will include miscarriage), and call women all kinds of names. Now Trump has blamed election fraud, NO its your name calling, RHINO,llocking up mom, aunts, daughters, and cousins. Women work to feed families with little help, and alpha types want to take away birth control. YIKES….so men can buy $80,000 trucks, women have to work 2 jobs, and yes single, childless women are saints and have been for thousands of years. Stick to their record!! Harris has no leadership skills, no empathy, just stick to the narrative!

There was, and still is election fraud. Part of the problem is their is no uniformity in state election laws. Whats legal in Utah might be illegal in PA.
But you are 100% correct in your last sentence.

Abortion, LGBTQ, infantilization of young adults, fear of a future through the broadcast of propaganda like climate crisis, deadly viruses etc. etc. ad nauseum. What do they all have in common? Limiting human reproduction. Add it all up and globalization is a depopulation strategy. The machines can work, we can depopulate to a point where your masters realize they need human workers and consumers. Especially poignant in high growth demographics like Africa. We set the tone. The only reason we needed more babies on a continued basis was because our economic models depend on more people, working more job and paying more taxes, year over year.

That all goes out the window when AI’s/robots do most of the work humans used to do.
Do you suppose a robot could hold the Stop/Go sign in road construction areas? Hell, why couldn’t ONE person at one end also control the robot so the traffic movement could be coordinated? I’ll tell you the reason why not – UNIONS!

Today it’s all about women have the right to choose what to do with her own body, to have no children, to work, to sue for for sexual discriminations, to break a family…Since the sixties the gov empowered the queen of the house and suppressed the men of the house. Women are automatically believed and protected by judges, DAs, tetectives, police and progressive idiocy. They accumulated so much power, bc they are considered the victims and the weaker side. Women Lib : don’t dare to talk about women right to choose, to do what she wants.

Parents also already get child tax credits and various discounts on education expenses.

But it’s still too expensive to raise a child compared to median incomes, and this is part of why birthrates are way down.

Vance’s comments are very questionable, but the issue is a legitimate one. It should not be praised as punishing the childless, though. Many people are not childless by choice.

Both sides are “alienators” from particular P’sOV. Kamala (and the Democrats pulling the strings) want to extinguish crypto, for example. Whether crypto has a viable future as an alternative or not, this tyranny doesn’t go over well with the young, either. I’ve never had children of my own, but don’t feel threatened by Vance’s remarks any more than Butker’s. Both, I feel, extol the virtues of parenthood rather than condemn childlessness. All a matter of perspective.

If this election is close, it is an indictment of Democracy and the stupid, easily manipulated voters. Here is some elegant prose from Kamala Harris.

“Ukraine is a country in Europe. It exists next to another country called Russia. Russia is a bigger country. Russia is a powerful country. Russia decided to invade a smaller country called Ukraine, so, basically, that’s wrong.”

Sounds like she’s talking to a room full of kindergartners. What politician with two brain cells to rub together would uses such language? And this isn’t a one off. There are tons of other examples.

Kamala (or “QUE’ MALA!” as she is known in the hispanic community) has to be the most painful politician to listen to in my lifetime (I am unable to do it).

While some politicians are long winded and blustery and others are overly didactic in their explication of issues that are of concern to the public, Kamala’s syntax and the morphology of her grammar is beyond comprehension. Listening to her is like watching a horrible accident in slow motion that you are powerless to stop. Her syntax makes no logical sense most of the time but I guess it feels good to her and her followers and that’s all that counts if you’re a liberal.

If Biden was the “Emperor with No Clothes” then Kamala must be the “Empress with No Clue”.

Many people without kids have relatives they care about and want a good future for so if they vote, they vote for who they think will promote the best future for all. Unfortunately they and many people with kids vote for the Uniparty Congress Republicans and Democrats plus their administrations including Trump, Vance, Harris and her VP, who cooperate to pass more wasteful spending bills that add to our mountain of debt, which is frequently monetized by the fed, debasing the dollar even further. But, hopefully the tightening will continue and deflate the bubbles and malinvestment fed by Uniparty money printing and rate suppression.

Current generations failed to maintain infrastructure (interstate/airports) and eating seed corn of future generations (34 or is it now 35 trillion in debt). Be careful about that infrastructure thing. I worked in the aviation industry 40 years ago and the airlines (and trucking companies) were screaming about how they had agreed to pay a new tax on jet fuel (also motor fuel) so better airports (and highways) could be built. The tax was to be used for construction and maintenance and nothing else. Money that was not spent that year went into a Trust Fund to be used in future years.
Then the rules got changed and money not spent was declared to be a Surplus* and passed on to the US Treasury, to get spent ASAP.
PS – All that extra money us Boomers sent to the Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds also wound up in the same place.
That $7.16 Trillion is now the part of the National Dept called “Intragovernmental
Holdings”. So, we did pay for Infrastructure, we just got Gaslighted and

More importantly Harris’ name is on the original ballot and all the delegates are pledged to her/Biden. She is also being promoted for the sake of appearances and unity in the face of the Democratic Party’s upcoming convention. Remember they (the party leaders and donors that matter) all are behind her but they (the ones that matter) also said they are for an “open convention” too!.

Don’t be surprised when the cracks begin to appear before or as the convention begins. The majority of the polls show that she loses to Trump as her policies are inextricably linked to Biden’s in the mind of the voters as she was full throated supporter of those policies and their failures as well, that’s not going to change from now to November.

Kamala is the sacrificial lamb/ox being offered up at this time and supporting her is a way for the Democrats to show unity while at the same time ridding themselves a self serving and obnoxious subordinate (as they did with Biden) when the time is appropriate.

The fact that as a speaker of the English language (so they say) she cannot put a comprehensive sentence together without horribly mangling the syntax of it is further proof of her confused thinking and unfit ability to lead the executive branch of government.

I can only imagine the party leaders mutual shudder as they contemplate her acceptance speech at the closing of the convention. I’m quite sure they are all having a hard time with this behind closed doors but I am equally sure that they (the Democrats) have contingency plans as well.

It’s going to be a bumpy ride until November.

My money is on the Kamala cult when it comes to attracting young voters. They’ll vote for her because it’ll be a double first. Her policies will hurt them far more than Trumps but they’ll be told capitalism, corporations and billionaires are responsible for her policy failures.

Let’s see who the Democrats will choose as vice-president first because Vance will be debating against him or her almost certainly on this specific question.

Felix

Well, yeah, trash-talking any but an opponent or general policies isn’t the best thing for a politician to do. But Vance does need to solidly nail down his role as assassination insurance.

Anyway, the way to deal with Harris is to let female politicians shred her. Vance can’t do anything but, “Yes, mam. But if we do <Harris-policy>, <specific bad-bad> will happen”. And then let her talk. Let her talk a lot. Never interrupt.

Bull! The tax code is much higher for single filers. Those filing single pay higher taxes than those filing head of the household and married. Also, the child tax credit is big for a reason and single folks obviously do not qualify for that.

Well, we have a huge amount of people from rich to poor (the least to blame) clamoring for handouts, and the govt is in massive debt, so if the govt doesn’t say no to handouts, as it should, you need to either get that money from taxes or money printing, which steals from savers and workers through inflation, because the printed money isn’t backed by enough production of goods and services.

I think that the country would be better off if everyone just focused on policy differences rather than personal and lifestyle differences. Why are we trying to make neighbors hate neighbors? I recently finished an 8,000 mile roadtrip from to the opposite side of the country and back. Everybody was friendly no matter which state I was in. I think that everyone reads too many caricatures of the opposing view in their social media.

Yup, everyone holds up in thier echo chamber where they are fed a constant diet of caricatures. Um. So a child tax exemption/deduction/credit/whatnot can be spun as “punishing the childless”. Clever.

There was a time when US tax laws bent over backward to reward people who have children. Even ignoring cultural reasons, that does make sense. Those children will be supporting you in your old age. Yes, saving for old age is commendable, but your savings will be worth exactly what someone’s children and grand kids make them worth.

One can be cynical and forgo having kids, now that other peoples’ kids will support you in your old age. But how sustainable is that as a system?

Where do you think the money for Social Security comes from if not younger people still working? An important thing to understand since the number of young people contributing to the plan in proportion to the number of older people making claims under it is shrinking dramatically. The plan’s imminent bankruptcy is a foregone conclusion.

Point made, but the 5-10% of folks in the center who don’t want to vote for either candidate, but will end up voting for one… has Vance helped to bring any of those voters away from Harris or towards Trump? The answer is “no,” because he’s just a wannabe-Trump (minus the cult following).

Wonder if Kamala replacing Joe this early will end up being the greatest unforced “error” of the Trump campaign? (Hope not) Republicans had to keep calling for Joe to withdraw, go away, whatever. Then the Don agreed to debate JoeTato early instead of waiting until after the convention, when it would have been too late for a replacement. For all her many faults, more Dem wine box single fem “cat ladies” will back Kamala over Joe.

Mish, you are mistaken about tax policies that are pro child having an effect on how many children families have. Such policies have worked in many countries, including here in Australia where such tax credits and baby bonuses have worked to boost the birth rate..
As for childless by choice women, most are left voting anyways and most men and women can relate to the memes about childless cat spinsters and would only take offence if they are the sort who takes offence at any meme.

“This election is a nightmare for Libertarians and independents who both wanted a better choice than what we have.”

I don’t think a realistic person from one of those groups has expected a better choice from the R/D duopoly for decades. There will be other options out there on ballots, but looking for a savior in the form of a politician is not wise.

Every presidential election isn’t the most important one ever and if you believe the advertising that claims it is, then you should consider maybe you have ceded too much control over your life to the federal government.

The very reason the presidential elections are so important is FedGov HAS too much control over your life. It’s next to impossible to not “Do Business” with the DC criminal class.
If only there were a requirement each election to have voters renew or abolish the (non-existent) “Contract” to be under its tyrannical thumb?

Ron Paul, Pat Buchanan and Ross Perot were ‘maga’ long before Trump came along. In 2015 Trump saw Jeb! (Please Applaud) et al on one sideline and Hillary / Bernie on the other, and picked the path of least resistance.

There are vestiges of the last of the Chicago ‘third/fourth generation European ethnics’ hiding out in the far southwest suburbs, the only political “right wing / left wing” distinction being which cable tv ‘news’ station they favor, all living right next to each other.

Isn’t supporting lower taxes for people with children the same as supporting child tax credits which are already popular? I suspect Vance has said some idiotic things, but these strike me as fairly weak sauce.

ajc1970

“Lower taxes” only helps people who pay taxes (middle class).

Tax credits are targeted for the near-zero income folks who file only to get welfare credits. Those people aren’t paying taxes.

Even if you think Vance’s opinion was bad, his comments simply don’t compare to the current regime’s actual hideous record of forced mRNA injections (human rights violations), endless unconstitutional war, battlefield humiliations in Afghanistan, an indisputable border invasion, runaway deficit spending, martial law (aka, “lockdowns”), endless lawfare, runaway inflation, supporting mutilation through surgery for gender dysphoria victims, etc.

100% on board with your assessment of the current Democratic Party… nonetheless, I really wish Trump would have made a more strategic pick for VP. When it comes to the mRNA concoctions trump touted and continues to tout “Warp Speed” and then there was the “Two weeks to flatten the curve”. The Covid Hysteria response was a major trump failure. “The [COVID-19] vaccine is one of the greatest achievements of mankind,” Trump remarked.
