Is President Biden’s Announced Trip to Israel Worth the Huge Risks?

Biden’s announced trip to a war zone has huge diplomatic, political and security risks. Is it an ill-advised political gamble or a smart move?

Normally, presidential trips to war zones are not announced in advance. This one is, and that increases the risk of something major going wrong.

The Wall Street Journal reports Biden’s Trip to Israel Carries Risks for U.S. Policy—and His Own Legacy.

With Israel on the brink of a ground invasion of Gaza, President Biden will visit the beleaguered nation with the aim of reinforcing American commitment to its security and addressing the spiraling humanitarian crisis in Gaza brought on by the war with Hamas.

As concerns intensify that the conflict could spread through the region, the U.S. hopes Biden’s trip will serve as a warning to any third parties—whether other nations or militant groups like Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah—that the U.S. was prepared to act if they join the conflict. By traveling to the region, the president is putting his credibility on the line and appearing to step deeper into the conflict, even as Biden and top administration officials asserted that U.S. combat troops wouldn’t be sent into another war.

Biden’s trip also poses a political challenge as he seeks a second term. Although support for Israel is popular among Americans overall in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 attacks, especially among Republicans and independent voters, Biden risks losing support from his own party.

A group of progressive Democrats, including Reps. Cori Bush (D., Mo.), Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.), André Carson (D., Ind.), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) and Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.), drafted a resolution Monday calling for a cease-fire and immediate humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Biden is scheduled to leave Washington late Tuesday. In addition to Israel, he will also travel to Amman, Jordan, to meet with regional leaders there, including Jordanian King Abdullah, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to discuss humanitarian issues and other elements of the conflict.

Potential Risks

  • A 35 vehicle motorcade running through Jerusalem will enflame tensions.
  • A high value target get to Israel there by plane, announced in advance.
  • A response from Lebanon might easily trigger a wider war.
  • If something goes wrong, the United Stares will be in a full scale war in the Middle East.
  • If something goes really wrong, Kamala will be in charge of the response.

Potential Gains

  • Biden can expand his legacy if something goes right or wrong. This gain is entirely political.
  • Perhaps Biden can persuade Israel to tone things down a bit or Egypt to accept more Palestinians.

Question of the Day

Humanitarian Crisis: Do You Support Israel Shutting of Water in Gaza Strip?

My question of the day on October 15 was Do You Support Israel Shutting of Water in Gaza Strip?

My question of the day today: Is Biden’s trip to Israel worth the risks?

If I am missing gains or risks, chime in.

Mohammed was a warlord who spread his religion by conquest. The Romans accepted all religions as they had many gods under their tent. So they had to define “religion.” Roman religion definition: It is old, was here before we arrived and conquered you. Judish fit the definition but Christianity didn’t. So Christianity was seen as insurrection originally. It took about 300 years for the Romans to convert.

In 600 AD the Middle East and Egypt were either Jewish or Christian. Mohammed had not been born yet. The Jews wanted to be left alone to study the Torah, and the Christians wanted Peace on Earth. Read the Koran.

Why is it that every politician falls over themself to praise and cowtow to Israel? Israel is a foreign country and its interests and our interests are not aligned. This just goes to show how much our politicians are bought and paid for. Jews spend $millions bribing US politicians to get $billion from US tax payers. It doesn’t help things that Zionist Evangelical Christians are trying to march us off into some kind of biblical prophecy.

I’m not even sure why Mish is asking this question.

If Biden didn’t go, when a notoriously volatile leader for Israel is threatening an act of genocide in reaction to a terrorist act, it would be among the greatest foreign policy blunders in U.S. history.

He’d be assailed from both sides of the aisle – election = lost.

Mish asks the question either because a) he’s vain enough to think his readers’ babble matters, or because b) he’s curious about how many tossers will throw around the term “genocide.”

No problem, put the clown show on global tour. Lots of interesting possibilities. More important, for how long has the WSJ been issuing editorials with such flat-out contradictions in a single sentence: “. . . President Biden will visit the beleaguered nation with the aim of reinforcing American commitment to its security and addressing the spiraling humanitarian crisis in Gaza . . .” Or does the Journal elsewhere note the incompatibility of the two objectives?

I am 99% positive no one in here has ever conducted protective service details. I have for the USAF and served with the DSS in Afghanistan. A trip like this on two days notice is a complete nightmare and for the first time since Biden took office, his life is in real danger heading to the Middle East where every Mullah within 2000 miles wants the US and Israel wiped off the map.

Whatever diplomatic solutions he offers, they could’ve been done in any more neutral territory like the Eu. Heading into Israel does not make him a tough guy regardless of his run-ins with Corn Pop. This is real stuff. It’s not a joke folks, i’m serious. I feel bad for the Secret Service and diplomatic security, this is going to be a nightmare.

Ex-military as well, I respect your service and opinion on this topic.

That said, I think Biden needs to make a bold statement to both sides by being there and attempting to tamp down the anger.

For him & his detail, yes, extremely risky, but the impact would be much greasier in person, not outside from a safe distance.

It is interesting they have announced it in advance. He is also meeting Arab autocrats in Jordan.
The region had its last devastating earthquake nearly one hundred years ago in 1927. The main source of risk for earthquakes in that area is the Dead Sea faults, known as the Great Rift Valley. The Arabian plate moves north relative to the Sinai-Israel plate. Perhaps the arrival of Abraham accords is the time to uncover what was buried under when plates were overturned during the time of Abraham and his nephew.

So far he’s played a minuscule role in this, so I fail to see how the praise is warranted. By how many comments I’ve seen, I presume them to be bots (non-human accounts).

I notice he’s talking out both sides of his mouth. Supporting Israel and supporting Gazans at the same time.

Looks like he’s going to capitalize on this crisis by inserting himself right in the middle of it.

Plenty to disbelieve in the mis-guided missile theory implausibly invented by US and Israeli propagandists. As reported worldwide before the hospital collapse, Israeli Defense Force demanded hospital evacuation hours before the strike. IDF reserves also posted, then deleted, communications confirming a successful strike. Additionally, the hospital building was not hit, the parking lot was – IDF is targeting an enemy in tunnels.

1) Israel is a small country. Biden may visit Gaza’s front line for trigger pictures to
show his support and courage.
2) Intel, Elta, IAI… are 10/20 miles from Gaza. NVDA, MSFT, IBM… are 20 miles
from Lebanon.
3) Israel eradicated the threats from the west bank. Gaza, the roach motel, is next.
4) Many of Israel’s best troops will not come back. Among them are Druze and Negev Bedouins. There are Arab generals in IDF. They will participate in cleansing Gaza,
showing their skills and courage.

Mish,
Biden’s advisors must be getting nervous about the coming election. There is no rational explanation for this trip. The potential risks (for reasons you mentioned and others) far outweigh the gains on a purely geopolitical and even humanitarian basis. Physical presence is neither necessary nor warranted under present circumstances. A really dumb idea.

Doug78
Doug78

Is it a good idea to go? That depends on what he brings with him and what he brings back both of which I have no idea. As for his personal safety I am not worried about that. He will be landing at a base with air and missile cover and not driving through the center of Jerusalem in an open car.

In the meantime, we have two carrier groups offshore and a bunch of F-15s in Jordan with a Marine Assault group sailing in from the Persian Gulf. As a sign of support for Israel it would be hard to do better but if Iran wants we can do much more.

It’s such an asymmetrical war that the risk of going to the more powerful country should be pretty low. If Biden were making a trip to Gaza, then, yeah, that would be risky! But to Israel should involved very little risk. The order to stand down and let Hamas invade was rescinded a few hours after the “invasion”, so not to worry. ‘course, we can always hope!

Richard Greene

Biden will not go
Israel is a war zone
And if Israel acts while Biden is there he will be considered either irrelevant or partly responsible for a massacre/

The only way to eliminate Hamas in gaza is to kill all the men. And Hamas, in underground tunnels, will be the last men killed. terrorists who do not wear uniforms and hide in tunnels under residential and commercial buildings WANT Israel to kill civilians so they can recruit more members.

Recent polls showed Hamas has about two thirds support in Gaza.

If I had the power, I’d consider having the Israeli military kill all males in Gaza. That is the only way to eliminate the Hamas animals. Muslims in the nations surrounding Israel will still hate Jews, but they might start fearing Jews for a change.

My alternate humane plan, with no deaths, would be for Israel to send cargo planes filled with garbage over Gaza City to dump that garbage in the streets until the hostages are free. Vermin love garbage, and a lot of vermin live in Gaza City. Human vermin.

Mt comment demonstrated the ONLY way to eliminate Hamas in Gaza City would be to kill all males in Gaza. The alternate response of dumping garbage on Gaza City would kill no one.

Other choices for Israel, such as going into Gaza on the ground and killing some Mamas and some male civilians — they look the same — would have three serious problems:

(1) Many Hamas members would survive a ground war in the tunnels

(2) Hamas sharp shooters in buildings would pick off Israeli soldiers walking in the streets below.

(3) The Gaza civilian deaths would be used by Hamas to recruit more members than they had before the attack on Israel.

There is no easy solution for terrorism. Doing nothing is not an good choice. Israeli actions in 2014 did not work to eliminate Gaza terrorists.

The US genocide in Iraq in 2003 is evidence that the US does NOT know how to fight terrorism. Iraq was not involved in 9/11, so our attack was one of the worst genocides in history. The winner writes the history books and they do not always tell the truth about a war.

We can all speculate on whether it’s worth it or not in advance and it will all be that, just pure speculation.

Afterwards, we’ll have the answer to whether or not it was a good idea. If it helps diffuse tensions its worth while. If it ratchets things up it’s not. Or it could be a nothing burger in the grand scheme of things.

Bibi is finished so Biden is meeting with the acting PM and can speak to him frankly and urge a tempered response to avoid a horrendous civilian bloodbath in Gaza

Why not? Do you suspect he’ll stumble over the script they give him?

The real reason Biden is going to Israel is to bring Palestinians and Israelis together so they can buy EVs made in America. Wake up guys!

I am actually concerned that they are sending Biden to the wolves and worst case of course would actually be the absoulte best case for Democrats. They get rid of the problem and we go to full scale war. Every single American would back this effort if they hurt our sitting President. They would absoutely sweep the elections in 2024. They need something to make an impact and I think sending him to the middle of a war zone is the risk they are absolutely willing to take. Let’s face it. He does not have a lot of years left to begin with. And it would rally this country like 9/11 or pearl harbor no doubt about it.

Ah no! I think that WE collectively understand that we are being manipulated, propagandized and lied to about everything! If the prez trip goes wrong, it might initially be shocking – though not unexpected given the risks – but I doubt Americans would go to war over it. That being said, there are fools in the current Admin and overall gov houses who don’t seem to mind exposing the elderly to a war zone.

Fredrick,
Great suggestion! Perhaps he can also take Lindsey Graham, Johnathan Greenblatt Howard Kohr and top representatives from the neocon think tanks.

And exchange them for hostages. That would make everything better.

Even in Hitlers Germany the soul of Germans was pierced. Many think the gas Chambers and Showers were for expediency and efficiency; but the truth was that it was hard to find even enough Germans to put a bullet into 6 million Jews, 17-20 million Russians civilians, and 2.8 million Russian POW’s that comprise the true totality of the holocaust.

The chambers were designed to depersonalize the death of millions, and required substantially fewer participants in their death.

Even some of the people who delivered the Atomic Bombs to Japan had a hard time with the consequences of their actions.

Even members of the Eighth Air Force who delivered Napalm bombs to Dresden could not live with their actions.

Today a Hospital was Bombed in Gaza Killing 500 people with numerous tragic injuries to children. The jury is out on who is responsible but a tragedy none the less.

MY Lord and Savior instructs us to pray for our leaders in Government , and my prayer is for them is the same as the prophets ” They shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.”

Choose this day whom you will serve, God or Mammon.

“And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.”

Nice Lord and Savior. (sarcasm)

The story you tell has a remedy, and that was to put the Blood of a Lamb on your door post and the plague would Passover you. This was the beginning of Israel’s release from bondage in Egypt. The Blood of the Lamb was an allegory of the coming of Jesus and his Death on the Cross with ensuing Redemption for all mankind.

I am not trying to turn this into a theology forum, but it is important to realize what makes cultures tick and how it affects their judgement, and actions.

People for a long time have been trying to make sense of mankind’s inhumanity to others. All cultures adopt story lines into their cultures to explain thing both secular and non secular. Just look at the debates on Dinosaurs making oil, or climate change and you can see how divergent mythos can be. I can only attest to understanding the stories I am familiar with.

Woven throughout the Old Testament are allegories about God’s coming Redemption for Humanity. Passover is just one of them. The Last Book of the Old Testament was written some 400 years before Christ and is the Book of Malachi. The whole story kind of leaves everybody wondering What’s Next. So for the last 2400 years many people are still waiting, and relying on Rabbinical teaching.

Jesus comes on the scene around the year zero, lives for 33 years and is killed after his 3 year ministry. The last author of the New Testament was John who wrote on the Island of Patmos after being sent there by the Romans who viewed his type as a threat to Roman Rule. So for 1900 years many people have been relying on Priests for insight.

It can all become quite convoluted at a societal level, and probably only finds meaning at a deep individual personal level…. but make no mistake countries are deeply motivated by their Mythos in determining their next move.

Today I heard of a Christian Group who is making hot meals for Israeli soldiers near the Front lines before going to battle. They are trying to win Jewish people to Christ by this measure. I thought to myself… that makes no sense because at the same time they are alienating Palestinians to Christ in probably double the numbers. It just goes to show how defective ministries of all faiths can be.

“It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it. You and I are not in the big club. And by the way, it’s the same big club they use to beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head in their media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy.” – Mr. Carlin
