Nikki Haley Drops Out of the Presidential Race, What’s Next for Republicans?

Haley isn’t expected to make an endorsement but will encourage Donald Trump to earn the support of the voters who backed her. What else? How should Trump respond?

Haley Exits the Race

The Wall Street Journal reports Nikki Haley to Exit Republican Presidential Race

Nikki Haley plans to suspend her Republican presidential primary bid in a speech Wednesday morning, people familiar with her plans told The Wall Street Journal.

The former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador is expected to make an appearance to deliver brief remarks in the Charleston, S.C., area around 10 a.m. ET. Her decision arrived the day after Super Tuesday, when she won only Vermont among 15 states that held GOP contests.

Haley won’t announce an endorsement Wednesday, the people said. She will encourage Donald Trump, who is close to having the delegates needed to win the GOP nomination, to earn the support of Republican and independent voters who backed her.

She is expected to emphasize that she will continue to advocate for the conservative domestic and foreign policies she supports and caution against some of the dangers, such as isolationism and a lack of fiscal discipline, that she sees coming from Washington.

In a statement late Tuesday, Haley’s campaign noted her wins while scoffing at Trump’s characterization of the party as united. “Today, in state after state, there remains a large block of Republican primary voters who are expressing deep concerns about Donald Trump,” spokeswoman Olivia Perez-Cubas said. “That is not the unity our party needs for success.”

Haley pledged earlier in the campaign to endorse the party’s eventual nominee but has since refused to reaffirm that commitment when asked about Trump. “What I will tell you is that I have serious concerns about Donald Trump. I have more serious concerns about Joe Biden,” she said in a Journal interview in late February.

Trump has said he wouldn’t want her as a vice-presidential running mate and she has also said that she wouldn’t want the job.

“I don’t want to be anybody’s vice president,” Haley said shortly before the New Hampshire primary. “That is off the table.”

What’s the Point?

Yesterday I asked, Hello Nikki Haley, What’s the Point of Staying in this Non-Race?

Today we have the answer. There is no point.

Reading between the lines, it appears Haley has ruled out running on the “No Labels” ticket.

Party Not United

I agree with Haley that the party is not united. However, it’s more united than Haley wants to admit.

Importantly, it remains to be seen what happens if Trump is convicted.

Is Trump an Isolationist?

Haley said she will continue to advocate for the conservative domestic and foreign policies she supports and caution against some of the dangers, such as isolationism and a lack of fiscal discipline.

Trump is a strong backer of Israel. He will not let Iran be. He has reached out to North Korea.

Trump is more of an opportunist than a strict isolationist. I would rather have a mind your own business type of president, but at least Trump is far better than Haley on this score.

Small Government? Fiscal Discipline? Where?

A for small government, they are all liars. Look at what Republicans are doing. They just supported expansion of child tax credits.

What small government did Trump deliver in his term? Please recall Trump was upset Republicans did not deliver a bigger Covid stimulus package.

Biden got the highly inflationary package that Trump got.

Trump wants big military expansion. How will he pay for it? And he has ruled out touching Social Security and Medicare.

So let me ask again, “small government, where?”

Tariffs, Sanctions, and Free Trade

It’s proven time and time again that sanctions backfire. Trump supports them. So does Biden.

Only a few of us Libertarians support free trade. This is another area where Trump and Biden are in 100% agreement.

Tariffs are a huge tax on consumers. More jobs are lost than gained on both sanctions and tariffs.

Earning Support of Haley Backers

This is where Haley is most correct. Trump’s childish “Bird Brain” name calling of Haley and “New Scum” of California Governor Gavin Newsome cannot possibly win any voters.

At best, all it can do is alienate voters enough to many to sit the election out. At worst it will ring up some votes for Biden.

Trump Would Rather Win Adoration From the Base Than Win the Election

I commented on Trump’s big problem in Trump Would Rather Win Adoration From the Base Than Win the Election

His core supporters love Trump’s cat calls but it is not going to win Trump any votes. The base is going nowhere.

Trump would be wise to take Haley’s advice and earn the support of her backers.

That does not mean adopting Haley’s warmongering policies. But it does means explaining why she is wrong, and stopping the name calling across the board.

Haley Statement

Biden is so pathetic and senile that perhaps Trump can win without Haley backers or independents given Biden’s losing of many black and young voters and overall lack of enthusiasm for Biden.

But eight months is a long way off. Biden might be forced to drop out due to medical conditions. Trump might be convicted.

In either of those scenarios, Trump cannot afford to alienate voters. It’s time to make amends and that is best done with rational discussions of policy rather than name calling.

I don’t think anyone really believes that “Nikki Haley” was either a Republican or a serious candidate. She just seems like a Democrat candidate.

There really are no serious candidates any more, and Trump is at least a big middle finger to those who made it that way.

What the media leftist establishment refuse to acknowledge, is that they created Trump, and they did it for clicks.

Sad to see you say there is no way to make government smaller except cut Social Security or Medicare. I guess your are still a ways away from needing either. Even if you saved enough for retirement, you will have to self insure for your health. How about the states taking back their Constitutional rights and doing education and so many other things better than the creativity choking government agency mandates. The federal government agencies are central planning bloated pigs.

They are both too old. 30 or 40 cents says to a dollar Biden won’t make it to the election. Trump? Maybe 5 cents to the dollar. This video: link to youtube.com shows Trump rambling, rambling, rambling. Not a good look.

As voters, we should be evaluating the VPs and the team members. With regard to the latter, neither candidate has a great track record, though Trump had, emphasis “had“, an excuse.

Trump is fine, and it’s a bit late for his detractors to try this angle. They must know that they’ve already lost, not because of Trump, but because they can’t find and field a half decent candidate. They are handing it to Trump by picking such appallingly bad candidates like Hillary and Kamala and Biden. There are so many better people out there, but the Democrat party is clearly malfunctioning when it wheels out the sort of deadbeats that infest Congress and the presidential candidate field. They are a toxic joke.

Trump is the product of a broken mefia-publicsector-political-donor establishment, don’t blame him for being a reality TV president, that’s what his imbecile enemies created.

Dave, You need to tone it down. Sure Israel and Jewish billionaires hold large influence in this country as can be seen by the pandering of our politicians to the Israeli Lobby. Sure you’re upset that our country is supplying bombs that are slaughtering innocent Palestinians. Sure our national leaders are a bunch of paid off stooges with no moral compass who look the other way as children are intentionally starved. But you are dealing with sheeple here and you can not expect them to step outside the Overton window that fences them in. They have been trained to react in a certain way when you verbally attack Israel. You hear the bleats of “antisemitism, antisemitism”, “Dave is baaaa-d”,….. Let them graze in peace.

The big question concerning Trump will be, who does he appoint to positions of power. It is they that will run the show. Last time around he made horrible choices that went against his instincts (like getting out of Afghanistan). As Ann Coulter complains, Trump is easily rolled.

Yes, he is. He’s got my vote though so far. You’d have to be out of your mind to vote for Biden. I’m not crazy about Trump, but you can’t have all these illegals coming over destroying our country. Also, the crime is out of control. Unfortunately, he is not concerned about the debt. I think the debt crisis will happen on his term because TPTB want a scapegoat and they hate Trump. Just seeing that psychotics shill screeching about Trump makes me ecstatic. Millions others just like her.

If Trump is convicted, it just shows that America is a third world banana republic ruled by a senile dictator, a law enforcement straight out of Papa Joe Stalin’s Russia, and a media of liars . Look at the three witches of MSNBC PJoy Reid, Rachel Madcow and Jenn Psaki last night ridiculing voters in Virginia saying immigration was issue number two. Virginia only has a border with West Virginia. Good Lord, it is the policy of the Biden crime regime to fly illegal aliens all over the country.
Whatever happened to Give em Hell Harry Truman? Or Mary Jo Kopechne’s murderer borking an outstanding nominee to the Supreme Court. Unlike Haley and other RINOs who believe in swallowing every piece of hate, lie and smear Senile Joe, Pelosi and the media throw at him, Trump fights back

Part of the reason Trump doesn’t mind spending is because he’s personally very familiar with bankruptcy. He’s used it to his advantage many times in business dealings and during his first term he hinted at doing it at the federal level in order to buy back US debt from foreign countries (read: China) at pennies on the dollar as a way to reduce federal debt.

I think you are sadly mistaken about Trumo. And Haley. He has no chance of winning, unlikely to be endorsed. Haley has no chance of winning either but will hang in there to be ready for another tilt at the 2028 election. I still think someone like Liz Chaney might still emerge and turn the Republican fortunes around, but they are broke and have lost their way. Very little chance.
