Trump Refuses a Second Debate With Harris, Good Move?

The answer to this is obvious. Trump is a proven terrible debater who does not practice and cannot control his emotions. But, but, but …

No Second Debate

The Wall Street Journal reports Trump Rejects Second Debate With Harris

“Kamala should focus on what she should have done during the last almost four year period,” Trump wrote Thursday, in all caps, on social media. “There will be no third debate!”

Trump claimed he won the Tuesday debate, though the vice president was widely seen as having the better night. “When a prizefighter loses a fight, the first words out of his mouth are, “I WANT A REMATCH,” he wrote.

Asked if Trump was in fact ruling out a debate, a spokeswoman said in an email, “You heard the man!”

Harris, meanwhile, again called for the candidates to meet one more time. “I believe we owe it to the voters to have another debate,” she said Thursday at a rally in Charlotte, N.C.—minutes after Trump’s announcement.

Kudos to Nate Silver for suggesting in advance there would be no second debate.

And despite Trump proclaiming he won, heck, not even Fox News believes so.

Clear Winner?

Fox News writer Doug Schoen comments In the Trump-Harris faceoff there was a clear winner but don’t believe this election is over

It’s pretty clear to me that on Tuesday night, Vice President Kamala Harris won what may be the only debate between herself and former President Trump. The vice president had some help, too. She was aided and abetted by two ABC News moderators who seemingly felt the need to fact-check virtually everything the former president said.

The former president was clearly frustrated and became more strident and divisive as the nearly two-hour debate continued. And the vice president appeared to gain renewed confidence as she saw Trump faltering under relentless questioning from herself and moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis.

To be sure, Harris had better answers on abortion, health care, climate change and leadership for the future. That much is clear. But what is also clear is that what Trump said in his closing statement remains the case.

Voters remain angry about the direction the country is headed, about the performance of both President Biden and Harris, as well as which candidate they trust more on the top two or three issues facing the country: the economy, immigration and law and order.

That analysis is mostly spot on. And opinions articles like the above are not typical of Fox News.

That was a tiny panel but the comments are instructive.

Checking in with Robert F. Kennedy (RFK), Fox News reports Kamala Harris ‘Clearly Won the Debate in Terms of Her Delivery’: RFK, Jr.

A Catastrophic Debate for Trump

Wall Street Journal writer Karl Rove was not as kind. Rove calls it a A Catastrophic Debate for Trump.

Tuesday’s debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump was a train wreck for him, far worse than anything Team Trump could have imagined.

Ms. Harris was often on offense, leaving Mr. Trump visibly rattled as she launched rocket after rocket at him. A New York Times analysis found she spent 46% of her time on the attack while Mr. Trump devoted 29% of his time to going after her. Debates aren’t won on defense.

Ms. Harris pressed Mr. Trump on the economy, the Ukraine war, foreign policy, healthcare, the Jan. 6 attack and especially abortion, leaving him flustered and often incoherent. In return, he criticized her on border security, climate change and the Israel-Hamas war.

Mr. Trump had to know the vice president would try to get him to lose his cool. She did. She went after him on his multiple indictments. She called him “weak” and belittled him as a six-time bankrupt, spoiled inheritor of wealth. She said his former national security adviser thought him, in her words, “dangerous and unfit” for the Oval Office.

As is frequently the case with Mr. Trump, he let his emotions get the better of him. He took the bait almost every time she put it on the hook, offering a pained smile as she did. Rather than dismissing her attacks and launching his strongest counterarguments against her, Mr. Trump got furious. As her attacks continued, his voice rose. He gripped the podium more often and more firmly. He grimaced and shook his head, at times responding with wild and fanciful rhetoric. Short, deft replies and counterpunches would have been effective. He didn’t deliver them.

Mr. Trump did a terrible job at his most important task—tying her to President Biden’s failed policies. He did an even worse job prosecuting the argument that she’s a far-left politician out of sync with America’s values. The Trump campaign’s mid-debate fact-check bulletins that flooded email inboxes were far more substantive and effective than his responses at the podium.

Mr. Trump’s failure wasn’t for a lack of material. He had plenty in the Biden-Harris administration’s record to work with, especially on inflation and the crisis at the border. In one of his strongest moments, he hit hard on the botched Afghan withdrawal. Even then, he got sucked into an argument about his administration’s negotiations with the Taliban.

All of the above is true.

I am amused by Rove’s comment “offering a pained smile” because that is exactly how I saw it.

Debate night I commented on my blog “Harris looked like she had a phony smile most of the evening.”

Terrible Responses

Trump wasted time disputing people left his rallies early.

And his abortion answer was a disaster. When asked if he would sign legislation banning abortion Trump refused to answer the question. He should have been prepared for this question.

The correct answer is: “Of course. This is a states rights issue. If I signed it, the Supreme Court would overrule it. I care about constitutional issues, Kamala Harris doesn’t. The same applies to student debt. This administration constantly flouts the Supreme Court.”

Trump was not prepared for any question.

Q: Why?
A: Trump has said repeatedly he does not need to prepare for debates.

This is part of his arrogant, narcissist, know-it-all mentality. And he claims to be the world’s best negotiator.

There’s another hoot. Good negotiators don’t get baited into stupid answers.

Perhaps with that statement, I lost some readers. So be it. But …..

But Catastrophic?

Dear Mr. Rove, please be serious. If it costs Trump the election it would be catastrophic. But … this debate will not cost Trump the election.

Next consider the WSJ Op-Ed Kamala’s Problem the Debate Didn’t Fix by
Kimberley A. Strassel.

Less than eight weeks from the presidential election, there are two wildly different narratives of this race: the one presented by the press, and the one experienced by average voters. No points for guessing which is more accurate.

Tuesday’s debate postmortem is the best example yet. The press is fist-pumping over Kamala Harris’s “win,” how she went about “eviscerating [Donald] Trump,” how she turned in (no joke) “one of the more resounding debate performances in recent decades.” Republicans are still stewing over biased moderators, even as they grudgingly admit Mr. Trump blew it. Social media is mixed on whether Taylor Swift’s endorsement seals victory for the vice president.

Back in the real world, this is all ridiculous. There was no winner in this televised scrum; only a nation of hardworking losers. Millions of Americans came home after a long day of work and tuned in hoping for answers to their daily struggles with inflation, migrants, crime. They instead got moderators obsessed with Beltway-bubble issues, and candidates who relitigated old disputes.

Ms. Harris’s standing with working-class voters is the worst of any Democrat in modern history. Barack Obama lost the white working class by 20 points in 2012, Joe Biden by 26 in 2020. The most recent Times poll has Ms. Harris behind by 36. That number has barely budged since July, despite five weeks of “joy.”

Also on the WSJ, James Freeman asked Why Don’t Harris Supporters Believe Her History?

Many swing voters say they don’t know enough about Vice President Kamala Harris’s record and plans for another term in Washington to make a decision about her candidacy. But even admirers who ought to know all about her recent history don’t seem able to believe it.

But, But, But This Was Three-On-One Debate

Yes, the fact checking was totally one-sided. It was so bad that some claim ABC won the debate.

OK, the fact checking was one-sided.

But Trump missed a clean home run opportunity to point that out. He could have hit a home run against Harris and ABC by calmly asking ….

“How come the fact checking is one sided? Why didn’t you fact check Harris on Project 25? On the costs of tariffs?”

The rest of the fact checking was self-imposed. It was stupid of Trump to make controversial claims. Instead of talking about Haitians eating cats (whether true or not), Trump should have focused on immigration crime, diseases like tuberculous (now spreading due to immigration), and the fact that immigration demand is pushing up the cost of housing.

These are not after-the-fact assessments, these were my thoughts real time.

Trump was totally unprepared for any question. And every question was easy to have foreseen!

So don’t tell me Harris knew the questions. The local barber knew the questions. Everyone did.

Who Won the Debate? Ask Me in a Week to 10 Days

On Wednesday, I commented Who Won the Debate? Ask Me in a Week to 10 Days

I am hearing mostly rah-rahs for Harris. And the instant polls show Harris was perceived as the winner. But did she pick up votes? For how long?

I believe that snip is the wrong framework.

I like Strassel’s comment: “There was no winner in this televised scrum; only a nation of hardworking losers.

And I like Doug Schoen’s observation: “Voters remain angry about the direction the country is headed, about the performance of both President Biden and Harris, as well as which candidate they trust more on the top two or three issues facing the country: the economy, immigration and law and order.

Even if Trump somehow picks up in the polls, he did not win in any sense of the word. He had it in his power to clobber Harris and didn’t.

What About Nobody?

It was that poll that inspired my poll.

Nearly 50 percent of my Twitter followers thought Trump won.

It’s delusional to believe Trump won. You don’t hit 2 out of 8 layups (if that) against a person in wheelchair who only hits one, then brag about winning.

This much is clear: Trump lost, the nation lost, and so did ABC.

Even if Harris picks up in the poll, factoring in her elusive answers, will it last?

The Top Issue Is the Economy

Trump inaccurately stated the economy lost 10,000 manufacturing jobs. It was 24,000 as I commented in real time watching the debate.

“Let me just tell you, they lost 10,000 manufacturing jobs this last month,” said Trump. Too bad there was not a fact check on that.

Note that BLS Negative Job Revisions 15 of Last 21 Months

And the current economic headline conditions are worse than the conditions heading into the 7th month of the Great Recession.

For discussion, please see Fed Beige Book Shows Flat or Declining Economy in 9 of 12 Fed Districts

Trump should have been well versed in all of that. He was more concerned about disputing the size of his rallies.

Finally, please see The McKelvey Recession Indicator Triggered, But What Are the Odds?

I have the odds a recession at well over 50 percent. A recession stands to bail out Trump from his mistakes.

She preternaturally pushed all his buttons, and his ego responded rather than a President. She’s never beat him on policy, but she’ll always beat him with a preternatural ability to manipulate emotion, both his and the audience. People are too dumb to listen with a skeptical ear, and let “feelings” drive their decisions.

Edit: Trump’s, “Run Spot Run!” comment during the debate pretty much sums up the Kamala Harris policy platform.

Will Trump debate again? After the severe beating he just received, he really doesn’t want to. In his mind, it will depend on the polls. If he finds himself even or ahead, he won’t. If he’s behind, he may not have a choice. He’s been calling Harris dumb as a rock, but she just made him look like a total ass. He really doesn’t want to be humiliated again.

It’s a bad call. Trump again is getting bad advice. Not a good sign.

That said, there is no case to make for Kamala. She has no successes, competence or apparently functioning synapses. Her only appeal is to those throwing emotional tantrums and seething rage at Trump and anyone that dare vote for him. It’s pathetic, but that is where the Dem party is today. Dick Cheney and all.

So why isn’t there any talk about Trump’s diminishing mental capacity? You seem to think that it is his lack of preparation etc, etc… The reality is he is old and will not get better. He will get worst and if he is suffering from dementia he will get worst faster. It is funny because he reminds me of Biden in 2020 where you could see him slowing down but wasn’t as noticeable as now. My prediction is Trump will follow the same path. In a related subject his entourage now includes Laura Loomer who said: “White House will “smell like curry”” as bad as that is (%100 racist) my question is where is JD you know the guy married to an Indian :). See Trump surrounds himself with sycophants and cowards that will never disagree with him head on. Like he says SAD !
One last thing the reason he laments that he is not running against Biden is simple. Like all narcissist who lose he wanted the re-match to show the world he is the best. To me this is affecting him more that anything else to the point that if he sees no path to the WH he will drop out of the race. Let remember that he said he could be out there playing gulf instead of going back to this treadmill. You know before Biden dropped.

She will be in Wilkes Barre today and in Philadelphia on Mon, along with the longest running lame duck president in the US history, who failed to reach a ceasefire between Bibi and Hamas, and gov Shapiro whom she sacked. The debate was painful. On a presidential 1 -10, Trump is a “3” and Harris is a “Negative 2” (few could destroy this country as rapidly as she and President Senility. (who said, “You don’t f_ck with the Bidens”). In the entire debate debacle I didn’t hear a word about what truly challenges this rapidly-fading empire – national debt and related interest payments, increasing fiscal deficits (and the lack of either party endeavoring to resolve), high inflation (<3% my eye) forthcoming CBDCs (even if issued by private banks, they’ll still be programmable and surveyable), the enormous freedom of speech deterioration and the non-focus from our “political leaders”/ELECTED officials on what’s best for this nation and its citizenry,

“She was aided and abetted by two ABC News moderators who seemingly felt the need to fact-check virtually everything the former president said.”

But i read there was no fact checking of Harris. Election corruption. Trump could have a good second debate performance and it would still be 3 against 1. The moderators are supposed to be neutral, not in the Democrat candidates pocket. In 2020, even the FOX News moderator was a Democrat. In the second debate, which turned out to be two separate interviews, because the intended PBS moderator was shown to be biased, Trump was treated differently than Biden.

If Harris wants a second debate she should submit to having it on FOX, with someone like Sean Hannity as moderator. Turn about is fair play. Long past time Democrat candidates didn’t have the moderator in their pocket.

Trump is very old. He starts debates well; then gets tired quickly and goes off script. This Biden/Harris administration is arguably the worst in history on metrics, policy, and ethics; it should have been easy to dismantle an administration that simply cannot run on its own disastrous record of repeated failure on economics, foreign policy, corruption, lawfare, intentionally dismantling and mismanaging the border, and gaffes and unforced errors beyond measure. And yeah, regime media won the debate. Boycotting the nation’s propaganda outlets is absolutely essential for restoring free speech and combating the Orwellian censorship that is truly one of our greatest threats.

There have already been two presidential debates. C’est finis. Now the Komrade campaign has to pivot back to policy and rationality, not entertainment. That’s a problem because she has no policy and her backers are divided. This should become clearer in the Vance Walz debate. Apparently, there are a lot of people in the thread who believe they are Nostradamus. Its like linear extrapolation of a trend. The trend in this case being the happy happy joy joy theater. Dangerous in markets if you can’t read the information flow. Silver still has a good read and not buying the hype. As does Mish with the underlying fundamentals.

“Trump is a proven shitty debater.”

He used to be more entertaining, though. He never made any sense, but at least he used to be more entertaining in how he went about not doing so. Now, he looks to have lost the “charming” side of the “angry old outsider man” role he used to play so much better.

I suspect he has just gotten old, and tired and less sharp and witty, as well. It was just covered up by direct comparison with Biden, who acted old enough to be Trump’s dad. And Kamala’s granddad.

In the eyes of many, the “alpha male” can get away with being a bit rude, obnoxious and unpleasant, as long as he does so with a spark in his eye. It almost appears that Trump has lost a lot of that now, compared to back in ’16. Leaving him much more likely to come across as just nasty and unpleasant, and without any real redeeming qualities.

In the Apprentice Trump needed a female executive before Ivanka to control aggressive women who shouted and fought over his head. He is most comfortable with total obedience around him. Failing to tame the shrew doesn’t disqualify him from becoming a president. If elected he will stay in Mar Largo, protected, insulated, away from DC, playing golf all day. Vance will drain the swamp

Because of Trump we can’t have a debate on the real policy issues plaguing this country anymore. The country’s brooding fiscal disaster didn’t come up in the debate. The sooner Trump quits the political stage the better for all of us. Given how old and tired he looked at the debate, there is actually hope that we could go back to serious politics, such as passing immigration reform, pretty soon.

– Because of Trump we can’t have a debate on the real policy issues plaguing this country anymore. He asked for a “True Debate” without any nuances, but Kam Refused to do so. Trump could have said “No” but he was the better person, and understood the importance of a debate for the American Citizens!

– The country’s brooding fiscal disaster didn’t come up in the debate.
> Of course not, and why would She allow a Negative to be spoken about?

– The sooner Trump quits the political stage the better for all of “US”.
> IF “US” = Illegals then your correct, but unfortunately I think you meant Citizens, and that would be a complete and total Disaster for Our Country!

Are you watching the same scenario play out that everybody else is? Asking for a Friend…

The press loved Trump back in the day. He still thinks they do. They don’t and they will take advantage of this at every opportunity. Trump needs to completely shut down the MSM. He does not need them. His White House press room should only consist of independent journalists and citizen journalists.

Kamala came away looking canned, fake and insincere. She is hugely upside down on the economy and the border. Her plans are all Trump like and a complete flip flop from where she was five years. Voters see this. Brat girl summer is only going to get you so far.

You know exactly what you are going to get with Trump. Not so much with Harris. Kamala might have won the battle but Trump will win the war.

A substantial stock market crash is coming in early October but the federal reserve will be lowering the fed fund rates with an equity rebound lasting beyond the election. Commodity prices will fall during the crash with a relatively quick drop in gasoline prices and food prices, a welcome relief for those with jobs and fixed incomes.
The recession will be severe with rising unemployment but won’t occur until after the election. The Democrats may be in the sweet spot of rapidly falling gas and food prices but before the rapid rise in unemployment.
Trump should learn the simple lessons from this debate and demand another. If he can’t and won’t, there is little doubt about his mental competence.

Because Harris has continuing increasing momentum and many people want to see Trump gone. America is sick of Trump’s negativity and constant being a victim schtick,

Additionally, with Swift’s endorsement, there could be an unexpectedly huge turnout of young voters for Harris also.

You think he’s going to lose TX and FL — huge EV numbers and a huge chunk of “leave me along govt” America moved to those states during the pandemic?

He’s got FL, TX, OH and 15+ other states locked up.

Kamala has NY, CA and 15+ other states locked up.

Roughly 10 states decide it all and because of that, the max margin for Kamala or Trump is around 100 EVs.

Enough with the fake news. They are not “sorority sisters”.

Sorority sisters implies they were in the same sorority house at the same time.

Yes, they belonged to the same sorority, but it was at different universities, decades ago, and decades apart.

By your logic, if Trump belongs to the AAA auto club and so does Davis Muir then that must be a massive conflict of interest! Give me a break.

Trump could be playing a game here. By refusing to join the second debate, he will get a lot of the shitlibs to start gloating that he’s afraid and ducking the debate etc. etc., so that when he finally agrees, the expectations for him would be quite low and would be the opposite for the opponent.

The first televised debate between Kennedy and Nixon was the worst idea ever to hit democracy. Kennedy had the natural advantage of looks, and ever since it has become a contest between looks over substance.
Is the presidency or suitability for office about winning a debate which often degenerate into mudslinging? Naturally, the format exaggerated the advantage which already existed in favor of professions which require public speech, mainly lawyers.
More serious countries didn’t adopt it until the end of cold war, when things got temporarily more relaxed, namely UK, but the genie cannot be put back into the bottle.

Sorry dude, but no conspiracy theory is needed to explain why Trump lost the debate. He lost the debate because he is Donald Trump.

This is what actually happened…

He had a vast amount of ammunition to use against her – immigration, inflation, lack of a credible economic plan, etc. But… she very cleverly kept baiting him throughout the event and instead of staying laser focused and on message on the aforementioned topics, he just kept gnawing at the bait she was feeding him. The result was that he wasted sooo much time and so many missed opportunities to respond clearly and effectively to the topics being raised.

This is why he lost the debate. Not invisible earpieces, four instances of legitimate fact checking, sororities or whatever. He lost the debate because he cannot control himself. Plain and simple.

This is 100% true, but his supporters all wear very thick rose colored glasses. The only thing they can resort to is silly conspiracies for which they have no evidence to support. Every time Trump fucks up they (and Trump) make excuses. Where’s the accountability? It’s pathetic and off putting.

I had Trump winning easily had Biden stayed in, as of now, Harris is in the driver’s seat. That’s not an endorsement either. I can’t stand either candidate.

To me it seems like Kamala didn’t lose while Trump didn’t win. I’ve long said that Trump is not an effective debater but then again Kamala is not an effective speaker. The disappointment is that Harris is easy to beat. Trump fumbled. Still, I don’t really think it helped Harris.

Trump got baited and was caught up in that smirking strategy Harris used. Kamala learned her tactics well and kudos to her handlers on this first rehearsal.. Trump should now see if Kamala ever starts showing how much of a Leader she is. Will she ever be allowed to face a tough unrehearsed Interview. Let’s see if Kamala is allowed to ever come out unscripted by her handlers. Many voters will want more substance than Kamala has shown so far.

In a way he did win actually. I think because ABC was so blatantly absurdly one-sided against him, it reinforced his come from behind underdog thing

Harris also came off looking like a scolding suburban mom, which may play well with suburban women but few others

I mean he lost the debate, and he is an absolutely lousy debater who lets opportunity after opportunity go by to score points.

But I do not think it helped her in the actual election

Not that that matters anyway. How ever many votes she is behind, the “CIA” will simply have the controlled locales stop the counting, dismiss the observers and truck in however many mail-in ballots, all off the same printer, with the same markings and unfolded and run them through the scanners and then – voila – oh look, Harris “won”

While I didn’t watch anything after the abortion dumpster fire, I’ve seen several other clips from later in the debate, where he looked quite strong. The abortion circle jerk was definitely the low point for him. It was such a trap. He should have repeated him point about returning the policy making to the states and then shut up.
