Big Three Automakers Blast Trump’s UK Trade Deal

It only took one day for complaints to roll in. Also, Ford is hiking prices.

Hooray! A Tentative Deal with the UK, Only 199 Deals to Go

Yesterday, I commented Hooray! A Tentative Deal with the UK, Only 199 Deals to Go

My post initially said 299 deals to go. I added a correction. Trump promised 200 deals, not 300.

Today …

Automakers Not Happy

Please note Big Three Automakers Blast Trump’s UK Trade Deal

A group representing General Motors, Ford and Stellantis blasted President Donald Trump’s trade deal announced with the United Kingdom, saying it would harm the U.S. auto sector.

British carmakers will be given a quota of 100,000 cars a year that can be sent to the United States at a 10% tariff rate, almost the total Britain exported last year, compared to 25% for Mexico and Canada and nearly all other countries.

“Under this deal, it will now be cheaper to import a UK vehicle with very little U.S. content than a USMCA compliant vehicle from Mexico or Canada that is half American parts,” said the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Detroit Three automakers. “This hurts American automakers, suppliers, and auto workers.”

U.S. automakers are concerned this could be a template for other agreements that could put vehicles they assemble in Canada or Mexico at a disadvantage. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

One would think, well maybe, we are dealing with Trump here, that someone would have consulted the auto industry over this carve out.

However, there was pressure to complete a deal, any deal, given Trump’s promise of 200 deals.

200 Deals Made Already!

For discussion, please see Trump Tells Time Magazine He Has Made 200 Deals Already, Refused to Name Any

Your trade adviser, Peter Navarro, says 90 deals in 90 days is possible. We’re now 13 days into the point from when you lifted the reciprocal, the discounted reciprocal tariffs. There’s zero deals so far. Why is that?

No, there’s many deals.

When are they going to be announced?

You have to understand, I’m dealing with all the companies, very friendly countries. We’re meeting with China. We’re doing fine with everybody. But ultimately, I’ve made all the deals.

Not one has been announced yet. When are you going to announce them?

I’ve made 200 deals.

You’ve made 200 deals?

100%.

I’m just curious, why don’t you announce these deals that you’ve solidified?

I would say, over the next three to four weeks, and we’re finished, by the way.

You’re finished?

We’ll be finished.

Oh, you will be finished in three to four weeks.

I’ll be finished. Now, some countries may come back and ask for an adjustment, and I’ll consider that, but I’ll basically be, with great knowledge, setting—ready? We’re a department store, a giant department store, the biggest department store in history.

200 Deal Countdown

That interview was on April 25. Trump said 200 deals would be “finished” in 3-4 weeks.

Let’s call it four weeks. Two weeks have gone by.

Four weeks will take us to May 23.

Ford Hikes Prices on Mexico-Produced Models

While waiting for deals, please note Ford Hikes Prices on Mexico-Produced Models

Ford Motor (F.N), has hiked prices on three of its Mexico-produced models effective May 2, becoming one of the first major automakers to adjust sticker prices following U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Prices on the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, Maverick pickup and Bronco Sport will increase by as much as $2,000 on some models, according to a notice sent to dealers, which was reviewed by Reuters.

Questions of the Day

  • How many more deals will be announced in the next two weeks?
  • How long will this tentative deal with the UK last given the big three automaker objections?

Bonus Question

Who is paying those Ford price hikes, US consumers or Mexico?

Meanwhile, we can expect 199 more deals by May 23. I will be riveted to my chair waiting for the announcements.

The UK sales tax on American imports fell from 5.1% to 1.8%. Americans got a sales tax increase from 3.4% to 10% and this “deal” is considered a “win”?

Trump’s “art” (of the deal) is almost as good as Hunter Biden’s “art” when he blew paint bubbles through his crack pipe onto a canvas. Such amazing artists.

Ford country here. I could give to flips about raising prices because their products are below par for quality. How do I know? I worked as a contractor and I know many engineers, blue collar and even bean counters, they tell me upper management only cares about making more money at the expense of quality. Don’t believe me look at all the recalls, they tell them at the assembly plants “Just send them out let the dealer fix them”. Ford in ten years will be owned by a holding company just like Chrysler and others. Ford family is dying out and those behind them are incompetent as you are seeing with the EV failure. Buyer be warned!!!!!! Their in debt over the value of the company so basically are in default.

Ford products feel cheap. Recently, we got in a Ford cab, it brought back memories of the no choice 1970’s. The door to the cab wouldn’t close, the interior was cheap and I was surprised that the thing even ran given the engine noise.

American cars are shite though, nobody in the UK is worrying about an invasion of American junk, it’s poor quality, and bad for your health. If some of it’s cheaper, then fine for some, but the better quality stuff is closer to home anyway.

The big three’s problems are self inflicted. Instead of chasing the EV dream they should have been focused on building quality cars. Ford ‘s entire earnings shortfall was from their electric car business.

Now they are so pathetic that they are worried about cars from the UK. When has anyone ever been threatened by British cars. 1950?

– It only took one day for complaints to roll in. > Of course they will complain, but didn’t anybody on the Planet think that they wouldn’t? If so, don’t be so naive…

– Also, Ford is hiking prices. > They can do whatever they like, and pay the consequences accordingly. Maybe have the Unions (Everybody) take a pay cut, to show support for there company, it’s fellow employees and the overall health of the automotive industry, as they have had one heck of a ride, or not… Maybe they all should?

– A group representing General Motors, Ford and Stellantis blasted President Donald Trump’s trade deal announced with the United Kingdom, saying it would harm the U.S. auto sector.
> Shame on them. The sooner these companies realize, that screaming at the President, openly about issues it knows nothing about, is a very bad look. They cannot and will never “Dictate” what’s being done for the overall health and well being of Americans and America overall, as it’s NOT about them specifically, as they would of course like it to be. Work together or stand alone!!!

– British carmakers will be given a quota of 100,000 cars a year that can be sent to the United States at a 10% tariff rate, almost the total Britain exported last year, compared to 25% for Mexico and Canada and nearly all other countries. > This is NOT standing alone, but playing together for the bigger picture. Car Makers care about Money & Making Cars, but Trump has an ENTIRE COUNTRY to think and care about. A Massive Difference, so wake up Automakers and Join, don’t Disrupt!!!

– U.S. automakers are concerned this could be a template for other agreements that could put vehicles they assemble in Canada or Mexico at a disadvantage. > That is not a concern at the moment, and there is nothing they can do anyway, as it at a much higher level than they are or can get involved in at this point.

– The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. > Why would they? They said what needed to be said, so until something changes, there is nothing More to say…

>> This is going to take time, and a lot of it over a long period. Getting in the way isn’t helping, but rather disrupting things. It will simply push their chance of a better outcome, further away from themselves. They are hurting themselves by choice!

>>> The Dems, for Political reasons, are purposefully trying to slow things down to hurt the Republicans, but it’s hurting EVERYONE, so it’s not a good look either, and there awful poll numbers show it. Following their lead is going to place them further and further behind. Other, much smarter auto companies across the Globe, are watching them stumble and bumble and will be there to pick up the pieces they leave behind. They best get on the band wagon, or be left behind. America will be fine, but they may not be…

So, trump finally announces a deal and it is worthless, a bad deal that sets a weak precedent because trump is so desperate to announce anything at all.

The 200 deals that were boasted about were another trump lie and nothing more.

I knew the orange haired narcissist was bad, but no where near this bad. He tried to bully the word and is getting his ass handed to him.

Can America survive three more years of this idiot at the helm?

What cars are basically exempt? McLaren, Rolls Royce and Bentley for the high rollers. Meanwhile for most Americans its $2,000 more to buy a Ford.

Who does trump work for?

The continued importing of 100,000 British autos per year, at marginally lower prices, is not going to make even a tiny dent in the U.S. auto market, where annual sales are > 18,000,000.

Back to your silo you go! Put those blinders on and pretend all is well and that trump has a plan. News flash for you and your TDS II world. Trump has no plan and is clueless when it comes to trade relationships.

Even when he makes a deal he breaks it – so why should these countries bother.

Far better for our competitors to trade with each other and let that fat blabbermouth trump squirm.

Chinese economic data is disappearing!

Even traditionally anti-Trump outlets like the WSJ are acknowledging the trend. Reuters reports that Chinese authorities, who were exceedingly concerned about the impacts of the tariffs, are the reason for Beijing’s capitulation and inevitable outreach to the Trump administration.

Many analysts have downgraded their 2025 economic forecasts for China, including Goldman and Nomura who warned that as many as 16 millions jobs could be lost. As both sides sit down to negotiate, it is becoming abundantly clear just how devastating the economic hit has been to China and the vastly superior leverage that Trump holds over Xi.

Only an economic illiterate would not have foreseen this.

Xi gives a crap about trump and his stupidity. In fact China is rejecting our LNG shipments as well as our grain shipments. They are happily accepting the EU, Australian, Brazil, Russian and Argentine grain shipments.

Who do you think our farmers are going to sell their crops to this year?

#47 today specifically recommended to invest in the market. Regarding tariff deals and tariffs: IT is and it isn’t the tariffs/deals. It is primarily 1. American consumer debt (congruent with plummeting Michigan consumer sentiment and including the new 1.6 trillion recently-activated repayable college loan debt) and 2. the collapsing Chinese property bubble. The asset-debt macroeconomic system is deterministic and undergoing a self-assembly 1982-2026 13/32 of 33 year cyclical fractal collapse. The SPX 3 Feb 2025 8/19/20 day :: y/2-2.5y/2.5y fractal decay series was followed by a 7 April sequential 4-phase 2/4/4/3 day and a 3-phase 3/6/8 day counter-trend fractal series growth. An interpolated 30 April 2025 6/15/15 day :: y/2.5y/2.5y fractal decay series (fractally similar to the 3 Feb 2025 3-phase decay series) will serve notice that the Market is experiencing a once in a lifetime trifecta combination of unsustainable American consumer debt, a collapsing Chinese property bubble, and a horrifically-timed tariff policy, both crippling to the Chinese export economy and payable by debt-stressed American consumers. The deterministic SPX self-organizing fractal progression from the 23 October 2023 low is 55/139/136/82-83 days :: x/2.5x/2.5x/1.5x with a peak on 19 Feb 2025 and a projected low on 17 June 2025. This is … exactly … NOT the time to invest in the market …

The ironic thing here is that we won’t allow China to import any EV’s to the USA even though they are much cheaper and great quality. The head of Ford brought this up and lobbied to prevent them coming into the US market when FJB was president. How hypocritical of FJB when he was mandating EV adoption. here. How hypocritical of Trump complaining of unfair trade when we are also putting up barriers to China prior to his tariff war.

Obviously you have forgotten all about China’s multiple manipulations it has committed since their entry into the WTO. At least Trump is calling them out on it. If they want fair trade and to be a world leader, then they need to act like a leader and a fair trader, not the bully yin-yangers that they are.

Trump will not let us catch a break on anything will he?? “Energy Star has saved American families and businesses more than half a trillion dollars in energy costs,” said Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, the ranking member of the committee, in a statement. “By eliminating this program, [Trump] will force Americans to buy appliances that cost more to run and waste more energy.”

More top-down planning of the American economy by the big beautiful Trump administration that is perfect in every way; don’t think so, just ask Trump or any of the administration officials or maybe better to say keep my job cheerleaders. These are legacy making deals, and I am hoping I live long enough to see how the showman spins this bs as the trade malarky will not be offset by the good done at the border, or anything else one could consider his successes.
