Caravan of 5,000 Hondurans Flock Mexican Border Hoping to Get to the US

The Wall Street Journal Photo of the Day shows migrants taking part in a caravan heading to the U.S. near the Mexico-Guatemala border.

Bloomberg reports Migrant Caravan Continues Toward U.S., Even as Trump Threatens Military Intervention.

Fox News reports Migrant caravan grabs for American Dream, as immigrants forge unique challenge for US, Mexico.

The river separating Guatemala and Mexico is the primary crossing point for tens of thousands of Central American immigrants who migrate north each year looking for work and a better life in America. Saturday night, however, when the sun went down, the river banks came alive, with hundreds of young Honduran men breaching the river to the chorus of fellow countrymen cheering them when they reached Mexican soil. Police made no attempt to intervene.

The caravan, numbering anywhere from 5,000 to 10,000, is composed of young, unemployed men, women with children, some families and unaccompanied juveniles. Most are from Honduras.

Mexican officials say some 5,100 to 7,200 migrants registered to stay in the shelters of Cuidad Hidalgo, with another 2,000 chose to camp in the town square. Earlier in the day, the Mexican government estimated 2,000 remained in Guatemala.

Mexico says some 640 asylum claims have been processed since Friday.  Many other immigrants waded across the Suchiate guided by a tow rope or took one of dozens of rafts that ply these waters daily. Mexico said “900” arrived in such “unauthorized means.”

Mexico says it will police its border against rogue caravan members who try to cross illegally, although evidence suggests otherwise.

Mexico fears Central Americans turned away from U.S. ports of entry will overwhelm already stressed food banks and shelters in border cities like Tijuana, Nogales and Juarez, creating immigrant ghettos of crime and desperation, with migrants unable to move north and with no money to return home.

With the midterm election just two weeks away, their trek north could provide a potent political argument for both sides as American voters decide which party can best untangle the immigration knot.

Perfect Timing

If those refugees were looking to aid Republicans in the mid-term elections, their timing was perfect.

Mexico will suddenly find a way to stop the caravan if we notify them we’re about to implement a far more thorough check at border crossings…about 48 hours per vehicle.

Mexico needs to have ALL of their development aid they get from USA removed if they do NOT stop this Caravan.

Mexico should either make these migrants submit asylum application in Mexico OR send them back to Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador or Bangladesh etc.

Mexico letting this horde of migrants travel freely toward USA is comparable to EVERY Mexican government minister showing a middle-finger to Trump and all Americans.

I would happily hire hard-working latino immigrants over Trump supporters. I’ve been bidding out a lot of jobs at my place recently and any time a company shows up with any kind of Trump bumper stickers or whatever, they’re out of the running. I’ve even been doing background checks on contractors to weed out Republicans and right wingers. They’re afraid of competition from latino immigrants… pathetic. Immigrants are what made America great in the first place.

A logical person would check for workers comp insurance, BBB complaints, do they have/pull permits, criminal background checks, references, etc. before a contractor did work on their property.

You are about to learn a hard lesson.

Ron most likely hires companies that employ illegal immigrants because they do the work cheaper since NO taxes to worry about and NO insurance to worry about since if an illegal immigrant gets injured he gets nothing but a shrug from the company and directions to the nearest ER.

NO healthcare payments since the illegal immigrants use the ER as their doctor.

I hope karma pays a visit to Ron and he gets sued by illegal immigrants working on one of his projects.

For people like Ron it would be helpful to correct their flawed thinking by giving them a 1 million dollar fine for employing illegals.

“Immigrants are what made America great in the first place”

I agree, Ron, and to that end, let’s bring in 50,000 foreign doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals a year for a quarter century while eliminating every healthcare subsidy and see where health prices go. Let’s do the same for lawyers, teachers, police and firemen, and name your favorite public sector positions here. Of course, while we are at it, we will also need to open up the pharmaceutical and insurance industries to foreign competition. However, most importantly, let’s hire Russia to audit our major banks and central bank and liquidate their assets, as required to bring them to solvency per, let’s say, 1950 banking regulations – back when lenders were responsible for their loans. Let’s see who the pathetic whiners would be then.

Since Lard Butt Trump is too busy tweeting and stuffing his craw with MickeyD’s and not fulfilling his countless unfulfilled promises, perhaps some patriots should go and defend the border.

Something needs to be done, that is obvious. The US has the right to police its border and can’t reasonably take all comers without a major backlash at home. On the political left, I would have thought the election of Trump would have focused their minds on dealing with this problem or people like Trump will keep winning elections. I’ve been wrong to this point. Perhaps if Democrats don’t do relatively well with Hispanic voters in the mid-terms, they’ll realize this issue is a vote loser and will work with the administration to resolve this problem.

I’m not comfortable with some of the rhetoric in the comments here, and am not cold to the desperation of these migrants. For all its problems, I’m very thankful I was born in the US and not Central America. However, there is obviously a limit and the line on immigrants must be drawn somewhere. Perhaps we keep the families together, process the asylum applications, and charge the aid accounts of the countries they are from for all of the costs of their detention, processing, and deportation where appropriate. I’m not sure what else can reasonably be done if Mexico doesn’t take any action, but I’m open to alternative solutions.

These people have NO BASIS to claim asylum.

Poverty is not a basis for asylum.

Wanting a job is not a basis for asylum.

A gang threat in Guatemala or Honduras is not a basis for asylum.

An abusive spouse in Guatemala is not a basis for asylum.

US should stop accepting asylum claims at it’s border with Mexico since Mexico is a safe enough country and migrants that cross over to USA illegally should be just returned back to Mexico and no asylum claims should be accepted from them.

France has this policy regarding migrants on their border with Italy.

If there is no basis for asylum, repatriation is the correct result. As a practical matter, we’ll have to process them before sending them back. I see your point about Mexico, but since we’re apparently more civilized than the French, I doubt the US implements this policy. If the US does implement this policy, I guess the migrant caravan is of no concern to the US. We’ll see what happens.

Ok, I can go with that . . .

One question though; Does this apply in the Americas, Australia and New Zealand, and if so shouldn’t the native peoples have a veto as to who can stay?

As to points 1-4 … there is this little thing called democracy that is supposed to govern us all (and seemingly the majority of votes have decided against this policy) . . . although point 5 may seem to invalidate the current democratic process, it itself has come about by democracy and thus carries a certain amount of legitimacy . . . point 6 may be true but once again democracy * there is no reason ‘stupid’ people can’t elect politicians legitimately enacting ‘stupid’ policies * . . . point 7 is a matter of opinion as is point 8 . . . I would definitively agree with point 9, but we may disagree on WHAT exactly needs to change and HOW.

These migrants are acting completely rationally. Their lives in their native lands is pretty much hopeless, destined to be nothing more than living out a mere existence of subsistence. Why not take a shot of moving to a nation where you could actually have a shot at a real life? Even if migration has a high probability of death it is still worth the risk. What is the point of the mind-numbing useless life in their native lands?

Honduras looks like Honduras because Hondurans have forever believed governments are some sort of useful institutions. So they have laid down flat in front of them, falling for every idiotic diatribe about “saving the economy” and “making Honduras Great again” their current Caudillo engages in.

American looks marginally better, because it did have a good run of a century or so, when Americans were not quite so foolish. Nowadays, Americans are mostly just as dumb and naive. But destroying every single one of the institutions those first hundred years built up, does take some time. So, we’re still ahead. Even if less so every year.

There is nothing a poor person living in a third world country can do to “fix” their own country. Any real movement away from corruption towards productive capitalism is beyond the ability of any poor person to make a reality in these countries. The ONLY shot the destitute have is to risk their lives getting to a nation with a developed economy.

Someone needs to do some productive work, in order for the banksters to have anything worth stealing.

Natives are increasingly wising up to the fact that it’s more lucrative to join the Fed welfare lines, than to schlep it to a real job only to have their earnings debased, mandated, sued, commandeered and otherwise stolen.

So the banksters need a constant supply of fresh, new, naive blood that they can rob. While the newcomers are still naive enough to believe America is some sort of a free land of opportunity. Until they, to, realize that America died 150 years ago. Then, rinse and repeat with another wave of fresh ones.

Soros funded Open Society Foundation funded a group called “Welcome to EU” and they printed migrant handbook in Arabic how to get through Europe and get asylum from EU countries and which EU countries were the best and how to get there and where to ask for help and these migrant handbooks were spread in Turkey among the 4 million Syrians already living in SAFETY in Turkey.

Soros funding was in other words part of the cause for the rush of 1+ million people to EU in 2015.

Other causes were leftist-communist Greek government stopping border control, stopping detention, stopping registering migrants as asylum seekers which caused news to spread one could get through Greece to Germany and Sweden and get free money for life and free apartment for life and free healthcare for life and lots of social benefits.

Main cause was Angela Merkel’s insane political choice to repeatedly say “there is NO LIMIT how many asylum seekers Germany takes” and her demands that borders must be kept open.

From Welcome to Europe aka w2EU:

“We welcome all travellers on their difficult trip and wish you all a good journey – because freedom of movement is everybody’s right!”.

Why did Mexico allow local people to give these migrants from Honduras and Guatemala rides over the river for about a dollar in rubber tire rafts?

Mexico should have sent police to confiscate the rafts once they saw the first raft cross the river.

Why did Mexico allow these people to cross the river swimming or with ropes they put across the river?

Mexico should have sent police to arrest everyone crossing the river for immigration violation.

Everyone crossing the river without a visa and without a passport should have been arrested by Mexico and put into an airplane and flown back to the other side of Guatemala or back to Honduras.

Why did Mexico according to news give some of these people 45 day visas which with they can get to US border and claim asylum?

Mexico should have either made these people ask for asylum from Mexico or returned them back to Guatemala or Honduras.

Why did Guatemala NOT send Guatemalan police arrest migrants trying to push into Mexico already on the Guatemalan side?

Why did Guatemala NOT close the broidge from their side thereby avoiding this humanitarian catastrophe on the bridge?

Guatemalan president seems to be incompetent.

Trump should:

1.
STOP all development aid to Guatemala and Honduras and El Salvador and Nicaragua immediately until they start controlling their people.
Next stop should be cutting all money transfers by Guatemalan and Honduran and El Salvadoran and Nicaraguan people already in USA so NO money whatsoever to Guatemala and Honduras and El Salvador and Nicarague so there is no benefit for the countries to allow their people come to USA.

2.
Trump should tell Mexico that unless Mexico stops this Caravan inside Mexico and returns these migrants either back home or keeps them in Mexico and gives them asylum in Mexico then USA will cancel the just negotiated trade treate and cancel NAFTA so Mexican president can explain to Mexican people why he caused an economic catastrophe for Mexico because he wanted to allow migrants use Mexico to get to USA.

This Caravan needs to be stopped BEFORE it gets to USA border because Sessions is an INCOMPETENT attorney general and has NOT stopped accepting ALL asylum requests at the US border and inside USA despite AG having that right according to US law.

France pepper sprays migrants trying to get to France on Italy-France border that try to cross, France REFUSES to take asylum applications at the border, France arrests all migrants that get from Italy to France and returns them back to Italy.

There is NO reason why USA does not act the same way with Mexico.
Mexico is a safe country that does not persecute migrants so NOT ONE migrant should be allowed to pass through Mexico and come claim asylum at US border.
Either Mexico stops them or Sessions has to start doing his job and use the US law that gives AG the right to stop taking asylum applications at the border and inside US from migrants.

“Mexico should have sent police to confiscate the rafts once they saw the first raft cross the river”

They didn’t because Mexico is not part of the union and therefore it does not have to help the US whatsoever. You see this is the thing had Trump treated them with respect when he became president instead of insulting them every chance he could then the Mexican government would have been more “helpful” . Remember this: the rest of the world have long memories and while you may insult them without any immediate response eventually you will find yourself asking these same people for help which they will promptly and politely ignore.

Mexican government is in effect showing a middle finger to Trump and to USA by allowing this Caravan and previously allowing huge flows of migrants to USA.

It is totally insane for Mexico to demand respect for Mexican government when Mexican government shows a middle finger to Trump and USA by their actions.

Mexican government is also betraying Mexican people by allowing the flows of drugs to Mexico through the southern border and onward to USA.

Mexican government could CRUSH the cartels and STOP most of the drug cartel violence by building a wall on the southern border of Mexico to stop drug smuggling and stop these flows of migrants.

Mexican government must be corrupt to CHOOSE to let cartels bring the drugs to Mexico and through Mexico to USA by NOT controlling the southern border of Mexico.

Mexican economy would CRASH completely without the trade with USA.
If Mexican government attitude is the same kind of arrogance you show then USA needs void NAFTA and cancel the new negotiated free trade agreement.

It would be extremely difficult to impossible to find a more ignorant person than your self. Sue stop all development help make sure that the desperate become 20,000 instead of 7,000 trying then to cross into the US. BTW walls don’t work ask the Spaniards in Ceuta and Melilla how well is the wall working over there to stop sub-Saharans (and we talking just to protect a city).

Carlos, Walls do work.

Israel built a wall on their border with Palestine, ZERO Palestinian suicide bombers in Israel since then.

Israel also built a wall on their border with Egypt, ZERO migrants from Eritrea and Sudan since then when before tens of thousands of Eritreans and Sudanese had come to Israel to seek asylum despite Africa having many SAFE countries where they could have gone.

The issue with Spain’s African enclaves Ceuta and Melilla is that there is NO wall there. There are high fences with barbed wire that people can climb and they do so in huge numbers because Spain lets some who climb over stay in Spain.

Spain should just open a gate and return people back to Morocco which is a SAFE country.

After climbing the fences 10 times and always being returned to Morocco even the most stubborn would realize that it is useless and go home.

Or Spain could build a proper wall that one is unable climb like Israel has done and guard the wall like Israel has done.

When you assume you make an ass out of u and me.

I think France’s policy on their border with Italy plus a wall would be enough for USA.

Build the wall, stop accepting asylum claims at US ports of entry, if people cross over to USA by climbing over the wall tell them that they can not leave an asylum claim since they came to US through a safe country and return them back to Mexico and tell them to leave their asylum claim in Mexico.

I really doubt people would climb more than once and even the most stubborn one would stop after being returned to Mexico the 10th time.

France has pepper-sprayed migrants trying to run to France on the Italy-France border and now since France told to Italy that there will be consequences if they do not start controlling their border Italians are pepper-spraying groups of migrants already inside Italy if they are going towards the French border in groups.

Newest policy from France is that if they catch people repeatedly inside France or from the trains between France and Italy (that are all inspected by by French border police on the first stop inside France) they do not just drive them back to Italy in vans they put them in a bus and drive them to southern Italy.
Most get the message.

These policies were started by leftist Hollande in summer of 2015 after Italy then run by Leftist-Renzi had been showing a middle finger to France in 2014 by saving 170,000 people from the Mediterranean sea but only registering 70,000 of them as asylum seekers meaning Italy “lost” 100,000 migrants, of course these migrants were not lost they just went north with many ending up in France and many going through France to the most attractive welfare destinations Germany and Sweden.
