Diesel Prices Rising Again After Falling Over 23 Cents from the Record High

Diesel hit a record high of $6.53 on September 21, now $6.30, up last two days.

Diesel Key Points

  • EIA Weekly High: $6.53 on September 21, 2026.
  • AAA Daily High: $6.53 on September 22, 2026.
  • AAA Current Price: $6.30 on October 14, 2026

The price of crude has generally been rising. West Texas Intermediate is back over $90 per barrel at $94.84 as of October 14, 2026, 5:20 PM Mountain.

Brent is $106.11.

It appears unlikely there will be significant energy relief before the election.

National Average Gasoline Prices

Current Gasoline Prices

  • Premium: $5.25
  • Mid-Grade: $4.86
  • Regular: $4.33

The prices are generally up a few cents from a month ago and down a couple cents from a week ago.

Looking ahead, energy does not rates to be a huge CPI factor in the October CPI report but it was today.

I would gleefully pay double the current high liquid fuels prices for the next two years (and their downstream price hikes) if it was in exchange for winning all the house and senate seats the Dems realistically can win (i.e. making Senate 54-46). We need to cauterize the wound, we’re years late to do so.

I suspect you’ll be wildly disappointed with what the Dems do during the 2 years time till the next election.

Don’t forget the Dems squandered the first 2 years under Biden when they controlled both houses in the same way the Republicans have squandered the first 2 years under Trump.

The Korean KOSPI was down another 7.5 % on 15 Oct.

Friday 16 October will end a 20 Aug to 16 Oct 41 day SPX 2nd fractal with a 4+% SPX loss on the day.

With the 16 Oct global equity mini-crash, Brent crude and diesel prices will transiently fall for a week or so before resuming their climb.

Considering how much of the KOSPI basically consists of Samsung, SK< Hynix and other AI-related components, his post actually is quite relevant.

Self declared President of Venezuela Donald Trump is failing to keep the power grid up and running. 62% of homes and businesses report daily blackouts of 16 to 20 hours. Protests are escalating with fires being set on roadways resulting in closures lasting over 12 hours.

On the 6th of October the 310,000 barrel refinery in Cadron had a natural gas feed line failure that caused multiple explosions and shut the refinery down completely.

Not a peep in U.S. corporate media as the story receives no coverage.

Things were bad before Trump took power but are now deteriorating to the point where the grid may collapse completely.

It is pretty hard to extract oil without power!

Trump couldn’t manage the average McDonalds restaurant on his best day…

The Venezuelan government recently required oil producers to generate their own electricity, but none are; yet. So they still rely on the unreliable grid for now.

Eventually, they will use natural gas or diesel for power generation, but that will take time and money to set up. So it will be hard for Venezuela to increase oil production for quite some time.

“It appears unlikely there will be significant energy relief before the election.”

And likely way beyond the election. How long will it take to fix these blown up refineries? Seems like 2027 will be inflationary hell for most people.

Trump was proud to say that allowing truckers to use farmer’s red dye diesel would bring prices down. A gimmick that won’t work.

Then he announced a deal with the devil (Putin) to remove sanctions on Russian diesel exports that would bring prices down. It won’t because Russia cannot produce enough diesel to make a difference with so many refineries being hit by Ukraine.

Sorry. There’s only one thing that can possibly prevent diesel prices from rising, or possibly even lower diesel prices, and that is more refineries producing more diesel.

But Ukraine keeps damaging Russian refineries and the Iran war has knocked out middle east refineries.

China has some extra refining capacity, but refuses to allow it.

And many of the world’s remaining refineries have been running full out and even forgoing needed maintenance to produce as much as they can. Eventually that maintenance will happen, whether scheduled or not.

There is nothing on the horizon that can supply enough diesel to make a difference.

Thanks for the comment. All correct with a couple of additions:

Venezuela’s 2nd largest refinery is shut down because of a blast and fire yesterday.

Russia already had a ban on diesel exports in place and Trump never cleared his “deal” with Putin or Zelenskyy.

Trumps alleged deal is illegal even if Putin sent the oil.

LOL! Trading with the enemy? Trump says Putin is a friend! His pal.

Trump says Canada is the real enemy. They treat us so badly. And they better stop interfering in our elections. But they will soon apologize for treating us so badly. And they will also soon become the 51st state. So the US can access all those resources that Trump says we don’t need.

Economic advisor and constant media propagandist for the Trump administration, Kevin Hassett, said the rise in inflation in September was hopefully a “blip” but admitted the report was disappointing.
This may be the first time this year Kevin Hassett hasn’t tried to con, cajole, and conflate data to make us believe we are in the golden age of the Trump economy.
“The market doesn’t like this; interest rates are rising,” Varney said. ” It’s the last report heading into the midterms. And it’s not real great on inflation, is it?”
“Right,” Hassett admitted. “You’re absolutely right.”
Hassett went on to blame the Houthis for the rise in fuel costs over their latest attacks on Saudi Arabia without mentioning their attacks were in response to Trump’s war with Iran. This may be the first time in a long time Hassett didn’t blame Joe Biden for their problems.

Kevin “Smiles” Hassett would easily be the worst economist in US history if not for all the other more substantive conservative charlatans competing for the title.

This is no surprise as Trump couldn’t manage a casino much less the US economy.

All of his bad decisions are coming to haunt him. Higher oil, gas and diesel prices were and are inevitable with all of the refinery damage caused by his stupidity.

They should be frustrated with their own stupidity. This is the SECOND time trump screws farmer. Evidently these lemmings have a short term memory and forgot about his first term.

Maybe you could share some of your thoughts on how things would be better with Giggles as commander in chief. One I can think of is we would not likely be supporting the Ukraine war and would not have initiated any military action in the middle east, but frankly neither party has been patriotic with respect to their policy. Both just spend money we do not have buying votes.

Well the solutions I can think of require huge sacriffices no one is willing to make. And since no one will make those sacrifices, you will try to run the clutch on 2nd gear while trying to go 80mph until you burn out the tranny.

My personal solution was simple and effective, move to greener pastures that meet my needs better than the pig pen suckers and losers have created.

Diesel crack spread over WTI is $110. That tells it all. And US oil refineries will need to start maintenance after runing 7 months at full throtle. Is this baked in in the spread or not yet?

To the extent it’s been already announced. It’s unplanned things that swing at the margin. (Like the Venezualian outage from explosion I mentioned. It may not export to the US but where it was going to will big up to get replacement cargoes.)

If the DOE #’s in morning are roughly in line w/ this PM’s APIs then the monster 11M+ crude draw will keep the space hot through the elections. That kind of draw has roughly happened a couple times earlier this yr but it’s not common. Ceterus paribus that, and a 1 M+ diesel draw will keep prices strong.

Oh, BTW, checked and Venezuala’s 2nd largest refinery is out. SIZE matters! Skip Europe for the moment, bringing down a 300k bod refinery that had been supplying the (South mostly) Americas really hurts. Planting time in Brazil etc. This situation is REALLY going to support regional prices for some time.

Your memory’s right — Cardón, Venezuela’s second-largest refinery (310,000 bpd nominal capacity), had a fire and explosions on Tuesday, Oct 6. A natural gas line ruptured near the diesel hydrotreater unit around 3:25 PM local time; the whole refinery was shut down as a precaution. No injuries were reported, and PDVSA says an investigation committee is looking into it — but no restart timeline has been announced.

Anybody still waiting for all that Russian Diesel that Trump said he arranged to get from Putin? Anybody still waiting for Zelenskyy the former Comedian to stop destroying Russian refineries that make that Diesel? Anybody still waiting for the Donald to be truthful more than 10% of the time?

Speaking of Zelenskyy he’s been an incredible Patriot for Ukraine. Where most of the citizenery can recall older screwings by Russia.

But I gotta mention, b/e WHO would ever think someone with his comedian talent(s) would prep him fo this? Anyone else ever seen some of his comedy routines?
The Piece de Resistance ending the skit consisted of him (kind of!) playing the Ukraine Nation Anthem with his anatomy while his pants were down.
Incredible but true! Maybe that was kahona training for courage!?

The older generation in Ukraine are the less “Ukrainian”. Nationalists were universally seen as freaks and losers.

The younger generation more so, because it has been made clear that this is the price of membership in The Club.
