The New York Times reports Houthis Seize Strategic Red Sea Port, a Major Victory for Iranian Ally
The Iran-backed militia routed Yemeni government forces in Mokha, putting the group in a stronger position to attack ships in a crucial waterway for global trade.
The Iran-backed Houthi militia captured a strategic Red Sea port city on Thursday, according to two Yemeni officials, in a sweeping ground offensive that could give the group greater control over an important shipping route and further destabilize energy markets.
The Houthis pushed out forces allied with the Yemeni government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia, to seize the city of Mokha as well as its port, according to a local official in the city and a senior provincial official. Both spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
Mokha has been the focus of several days of fierce ground battles between the Houthis and the internationally recognized government.
For Saudi Arabia and its Yemeni allies, the capture of Mokha is a major setback, raising questions about their ability to constrain the Houthis.
“It will put the U.S. and the Saudis and their allies in a much tighter situation than they already are,” said Farea Al-Muslimi, a Yemen specialist at Chatham House, a research institution in London.
For the Houthis, who are increasingly demanding to be treated as the country’s legitimate government — and be granted the power and resources that would come with that — taking Mokha is a significant victory. It also puts an ally of Iran one step closer to controlling a key maritime choke point.
The Houthis have previously attacked ships in the Red Sea from Yemeni territory further north, but control of Mokha gives the militia a foothold closer to the strait, with implications for global trade and oil markets, analysts say. After the Houthis seized the city on Thursday, the price of Brent crude, the global benchmark, rose to more than $105 a barrel, its highest level in months.
“This is potentially one of the more significant turning points, particularly in recent years, of the Yemen conflict,” said Adam Baron, a Yemen-focused fellow at New America, a research organization in Washington.
Saudi Arabia pivoted to the Red Sea to export most of its oil, but over the past two months, escalating tensions with the Houthis have disrupted that route.

Natural gas is flared, not Saudi heavy crude. NatGas does build up in pipelines causing lots of problems, including the risk of explosion, so it does need to be flared from stations usually built around pumping stations. But NatGas does not flare black smoke, depending on composition it either produces no smoke or white smoke. When you’re seeing black smoke, you’re seeing Saudi heavy oil burning (not flaring). And oil burning at 6 consecutive pumping stations is a catastrophic sign. Not saying that that its the result of Houthi bombs. But it looks like another 5 – 6 million barrels were taken off the market. The imperial press can’t be allowed to discuss this, or oil prices will go up another $25/barrel.

Fixing a pipeline is “simple” – helicopter a few pipeline sections out, shut the pipeline down, remove, replace, weld, inspect, open. It might take a few weeks, but it can be done. Pumping stations are MUCH more complicated and if they need foreign, Western engineers for these, good luck getting them out there.
As the pipeline had a 7 mbpd capacity, though may have only been shipping 4-5 million IIRC, this is gonna bite and bite, hard.

Maybe you think that as a citizen of a client state, I should be more respectful? If I am missing any local knowledge, I would be happy to have it pointed out. I know some Jews have made great contributions to civilization and science, Albert Einstein for example. And a few years ago I read a book by an earnest old Jew (I think his name was Roth) warning of how multiculturalism etc. was destroying civilization.

I don’t think Trump has focused on the debt yet. He thinks stabilizing the Middle East (in the interests of the Israelis admittedly) is more important.
Remember that the debt will never be repaid. It will be inflated away. This is about as certain as anything can be in economics.
Remember also that all this debt buildup has been going on since the suspension of payment in gold at the beginning of World War One. Some of you seem to think the debt is Trump’s fault. It is about a hundred years too late to fix it in any honest way now. Trump may not understand that, but at least he is trying to do something about what he sees as the most important problems.
I wouldn’t lose hope. Marshal McMahon rescued France after the debacle of year 1870. Trump or Vance may yet rescue the civilized world from the present debacle, at least temporarily.
