President Donald Trump’s new plan to temporarily allow more tariff-free foreign beef into the U.S. in an effort to bring down prices has only ramped up tensions with domestic cattle ranchers, who warn the policy could hurt both U.S. producers and consumers.
The backlash comes as Republicans face mounting pressure over the cost of living ahead of November’s midterm elections. Trump has been hemorrhaging support among rural voters since the beginning of his second term, which isn’t a good trend for a demographic Republicans need in their corner come November.
On Friday, Trump posted to social media his intention of removing tariffs from up to 300,000 metric tons of imported lean beef trimmings for ground beef production. The president said he secured a commitment with foreign beef exporters “that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices.”
But ranchers and farm groups are pushing back against the announcement, arguing that coupled with the absence of mandatory country-of-origin labeling and safety screening for beef, it could make it harder for consumers to distinguish imported meat from domestically raised cattle — giving imported products a competitive advantage while also drawing in questions of quality.
National Cattlemen’s Beef Association CEO Colin Woodall said his group was “disappointed” by the announcement.
“While America’s cattle producers share the goal of keeping groceries affordable for consumers, flooding the market with government-subsidized, below-market beef is not the way to rebuild the American cattle herd,” he said. Woodall noted the announcement caused cattle market futures to fall on Friday morning and will harm the “prospect of herd expansion and sacrifices long-term stability for short term messaging.”
The NCBA has skewed heavily Republican over the years in its support for federal candidates, according to OpenSecrets.org. The group’s PAC and individual contributors have given at least 89 percent of their campaign contributions to the GOP in elections dating back to 2012, with 95 percent going to Republicans in the 2024 cycle.
Trump, on Friday afternoon, defended his decision, contending that beef ranchers had indicated to his administration that the U.S. needed “help” with its available ground beef levels.
“We want to get the beef prices down, so we’ll get them down a little bit, and that’s what people want. That’s what the voters want, and that’s what I want. The ranchers are great — they’re my people,” he told reporters at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington.
Asked which countries were part of the beef pact, Trump declined to specify.
“I don’t want to say which countries, but there are a few countries,” he said. “But they are going to be sending in the highest-quality beef, and it’s something that we need.”

And this policy is supposed to help to regrow the US cattle herd. I know very little about the beef market, but this sounds like all hat and no cattle.
Trump’s weird little man in Argentina has made it impossible for a large swath of the Argentinian population to afford their own beef, so there is actually an unsellable domestic surplus.
Didn’t Trump put together a group to review monopolization of the beef processing industry? Did anything come of that or did they slip cash into the hands of the Trump crime family? I recall ranchers saying the problem was the few beef processors were colluding to keep cattle prices low and beef prices high to maximize profits, which caused ranchers to reduce their herds.
Another ridiculous thing ranchers fell for. Meat packers have to have full, or nearly full, kill pens in order to avoid losing their asses plus the wallets that are found there. To keep the kill pens full, or nearly full, they were paying extremely high prices for cattle. To entice ranchers to bring them all into the sale barn to get rich (sell the momma cows and heifers to boot). Ranchers were actually trying to buy an empty packing plant to go into the packing business. Two more just closed. Not enough cattle left.
Fast food places are all on the verge of bankruptcy so I guess this is Trump’s temporary solution. According to this site, there are 3.5 million jobs in fast food. Not sure if that counts the ancillary doordasher, uber eats, etc people or not.

My ground beef costs $10.49 a pound. My filet mignon also costs $10.49 a pound, as does my NY strip, my roasts, etc. That’s the going rate from my local rancher for 1/4 of a steer. Grass fed, I pick up the meat frozen from the person who raised the animal. It’s about 100lbs give or take and lasts my family a year. The cost was $9 a pound when we started just before the pandemic.

Out of curiosity, how big is your family. 100 lbs / 12 months is only 8 lbs a month or 2 lbs a week. 2 lbs is basically 4 burger patties (8 oz burgers) or two 1 lb steaks. Do you only eat beef once a week?
My receipt from the farmer states “1/4 beef standard cut grass fed” 97.36 lbs @ 10.49 a pound. AI search states 1/4 beef hanging weight is 125-185 lbs and final packaged weight 90-125 lbs. No biggie – I trust the person I have been buying from and trust that I got the 97ish pounds of meat that I paid for. The other local rancher selling 1/4 shares advertises “A 1/4 beef typically weighs around 100lbs. but this can change seasonally so please ask!” They are currently selling at $14 a pound.
We are 2 adults and 1 kid, so while I think we eat beef fairly often it’s true that a roast can last all week. Even using a pound of ground meat in tacos or another dish usually lasts a few days. Hamburgers themselves are really the only thing we make that uses up the entire pound in one meal. Anyway, it works for us. Having a chest freezer is nice!
this is the way. we buy from an local family farm just a couple with 2 small kids . we even get to see the cow raised well treated, the meat is far superior to factory raised beef. I would recommend for anyone that can. the price is about the same as the store. sometimes less

China’s government subsidizes a lot of the export. Taiwan does the same with most of the electronics built there. If you visit those countries you will see that the same stuff there is more expensive than here even with the tariffs. I just came back from Taiwan and the computers and the phones are on average 15-20% more expensive than here. So what do you think is happening – who pays what?
No foreign government or company pays one cent of the tariff to the US government. It is 100% paid by the US importer. The tariff refunds are now going back to those importers.
Yes, they don’t pay the tariffs directly but when they subsidize the price they are effectively paying one way or another. If the imported to US price is let’s say half of what it should be 100% tariff makes it back where it should be. It is a common practice now exporters or importers to declare lower price at US customs to cheat on the tariffs.

Here’s a real world example. US aluminum imports have increased this year because the US cannot produce more. Tariffs are 50%. US aluminum prices have increased 49%.
So US manufacturers that use aluminum are paying 49% more than their competitors in other countries who don’t have to pay a tariff. How are our manufacturers supposed to compete globally when their input costs are so high? In the first half of 2026, the US imported almost $30 billion of aluminum. The exporters who sell aluminum to the US are not changing their prices.

I have been paying attention since 2007.
I didn’t realize Trump was a narcissist until just a few years ago after observing my now ex-SIL’s behavior. I have likely come across narcissists numerous times in my life but never made the connection because I didn’t know what to look for. I voted for Trump all 3 times not because I agreed with all or even most of what he said or did, but rather because he was clearly a threat to the establishment based on their reactions to him and thus I anticipated he would undermine the established order through his crass behavior and actions.
I have been wanting to see the US abandon ALL overseas bases since 2007/8 right after I was red pilled. That was never going to happen under establishment types like GWB, BHO, or FJB. But Trump is doing a fantastic job of pulling us out of the Middle East. Sure, we’re being forcibly expelled by Iran and by the Gulf States asking us to leave so they don’t incur Iran’s wrath. yes Russia and china could not have asked for a better plant. I read an article long ago (decades) that russia would win because they would find a way to do exactly what trump is doing.
Luckily for us, the Russians are so misgoverned, their spectacular pile of domestic resources isn’t even exploited well, before they are sinking back into the mire again.
