The Hill reports Bessent predicts Strait of Hormuz will be ‘worthless’ in 2 years
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz will be “worthless” to the oil industry in two years.
Speaking to Fox Business’s Larry Kudlow on the sidelines of the Group of 20 finance ministers’ summit in North Carolina, Bessent argued the key waterway is “not a choke point” for the U.S.
“In two years, the Strait of Hormuz will be… a worthless piece of water,” he told Kudlow, adding oil “will be going on pipelines across land.”
Assuming Bessent actually believes what he says, the correct policy is open the strait, let Iran collect tolls at a diminishing rate to worthlessness in two years.
Instead, oil prices are soaring, diesel is about to hit an all-time high, we are risking US lives, our air bases destroyed, and we are running out of missiles fighting over something that will soon be worthless.

Do you think it is possible to fudge the SPR numbers to understate the amount of oil released under the guise of national security. Each report is seen by Iran too. We may be scraping the bottom of the barrel by now. I estimate 2.4B barrels have not made it out of the gulf. That the s the total SPR of the US, Japan and China. Also 200m barrels of the US is low grade oil that can only be refined by special refineries. So if the reports are true, we have about 90m barrels left of sweet marketable crude. But as we get to the bottom of that we start to hit the sludge that has built up at the bottom.
Not to worry.
POTUS will fill it back up with fresh sludge from Venezuela.
There may be sludge but the outlet pipes are actually at the top because the SPR pumps mainly fresh water in which causes the oil to separate to the top. An additional concern is integrity of the salt caverns because the fresh water erodes them each time it’s pumped in. Bigger and faster drawdowns cause more erosion.

At the current pace, the release of oil from the SPR per the commitment to by the US to release 172 million barrels will be completed by the end of November. This is substantially later than the initially projected completion date of end of August. I think the drawdown rate is now being managed purely to try to avoid any further price shock prior to the November elections. This may work for the price of oil, but it seems to be failing for the price of refined products (gas, diesel, jet fuel). If the Republicans are trounced in November and lose control of both houses, it would not surprise me if Trump then lets the SPR drawdowns stop, and the price of oil soars. It will all be about political posturing for 2028 (“see, as soon as the Democrats won Congress, your life went to hell because the price of oil/gas/diesel skyrocketed”).
As for Bessent’s comment, it is just inane. Before the war started, neither Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline (Petroline) and the UAE’s Habshan–Fujairah Pipeline (ADCOP) operated any where near capacity. The reason was simple economics. Loading crude oil onto VLCCs at terminal ports inside the Persian Gulf is just much more efficient. If the strait were opened, even with Iranian tolls, those economics would return. And what about LNG? You aren’t going to move that through a pipeline. Helium? Sulfur? Fertilizer? An open strait will always be the economically best solution. It’s really sad when the US Treasury Secretary spouts statements that are so evidently BS.

But this administration knows that, despite countless of its claims being “so evidently BS,” there is an information asymmetry filter installed, in the broad electorate’s “head in backside syndrome,” that reliably nullifies the factual reality. Trump never yet grew poor or politically moribund, underestimating the public’s intelligence.
You can’t move LNG thru a pipeline (at least any meaningful distance), but natural gas can be compressed and pumped thru most major pipelines at a rate of 1B to 3B cubic feet per day. There are 600 cubic feet of nat-gas that comprise 1 cubic foot of LNG. Tankers are pretty efficient as a typical LNG tanker can transport the equivalent of roughly 3B-4B cubic feet of warmed natural gas.
Is fertilizer going to move by pipeline? And the many other commodities from the gulf? Pipelines are not built overnight and are stationary targets that can’t hide.
Gulf countries need food and other stuff.

The ‘Big Inch’ (24″ diameter) oil pipeline was built in one year, starting 1942. It stretched 1300 miles from TX to NJ. Of course this was during a time when the US could ram things thru without all of the studies required today. The ‘Little Big Inch’ (20″ diameter) was also completed in roughly the same period.

There is some truth in Bessent’s statement. The Persian Gulf countries are well into planning and working on alternatives to using the strait. It is a combination of new pipelines, railroads, and new ports / upgraded ports. The UAE is currently building a new pipeline to bypass the strait that will be operational in 2027. The Saudis are upgrading their port on the Red Sea as that’s the bottle neck on their existing pipeline to the Red Sea. They still have the Suez Canal issue that the super tankers can’t use, but they use smaller tankers and load the VLCC tankers after the Suez. Irak is looking to build a new pipeline to a Syrian Port and repairing an older one not in service. Kuwait is looking to build a pipeline also and thee are railroads planned. There’s more if you read other sources for the energy. World. It will all not be complete in two years, but its underway. The railroads will handle the non liquid stuff. Bessent and Rubio pretend that 15 MB of new oil transport routes will magically appear. Even if that were the case, it ignores the fact that other equally important (maybe more important) trade passes through the Strait, such as NG, helium, fertilizer, etc. There’s no alternative for that, and near as I can tell there is no alternative solution to engineer alternative routes for those resources.

I’d like to offer another real question we should be asking:
Can the world afford two more years of the Trump presidency?
The distinction lies in leverage.
Iran can be reasoned with or pressured into opening the Strait.
Donald Trump cannot be persuaded or forced to step down, because the only metric he answers to is his own ego.
Thinking about McConnell I may be wrong but I think death would cause trump to “step down”. Can’t come soon enough as years and billions of dollars worth of damage has already been done.
