Lie of the Day: Administration Denies Sharing Classified Data With a Journalist

I have a simple suggestion.

Department of Defense Shares Classified War Plan Details With Journalist

Yesterday I noted Department of Defense Shares Classified War Plan Details With Journalist

The most striking aspect is the MAGA denial and hypocrisy.

See link for details of what happened. It’s very damning, and inexcusable.

Yet, today, we have denials, lies, and excuses.

Lie of the Day

The Wall Street Journal reports Trump Administration Denies Signal Chat Shared Classified Details With Journalist

The White House and two top intelligence officials denied on Tuesday that classified materials about military strikes in Yemen were shared by officials on a group chat on a nongovernment service, while Democrats denounced the security breach as reckless and dangerous.

Tulsi Gabbard, the director of national intelligence, and John Ratcliffe, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, told Congress Tuesday that the chat among senior officials over a pending military strike against Houthi militants earlier this month didn’t include classified information. The Atlantic reported that the chat included details of an imminent operation against the Houthis.

Gabbard and Ratcliffe’s claim, which was made in testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee, was challenged by several senators who said it wasn’t plausible that the chat could be unclassified.

“If this was the case of a military officer or an intelligence officer and they had this kind of behavior, they would be fired,” said Sen. Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat who serves as the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee. “This is one more example of the kind of sloppy, careless, incompetent behavior, particularly toward classified information.”

Kash Patel, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, declined to say if his agency would investigate whether the Signal chat violated security procedures, adding that he was briefed on the app discussion on Monday night and had no updates to provide.

The disclosure that top administration officials had conducted several days of discussion about the military operation over Signal, which was revealed in The Atlantic’s report, has also put a spotlight on national security adviser Mike Waltz, who organized the group thread about U.S. plans to launch airstrikes against Yemen’s Houthi militants and included the magazine’s editor in chief, Jeffrey Goldberg.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump signaled his support for Waltz, who had privately come under criticism from some administration officials after the incident. “Michael Waltz has learned a lesson, and he’s a good man,” Trump told NBC News.

Ratcliffe confirmed that he had participated but then said he didn’t remember any discussion of “weapon packages” or other operational details that the Atlantic reported had been mentioned. [I suggest we refresh his piss poor memory].

As for information shared by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Ratcliffe said that shouldn’t be considered to be secret because Hegseth has the authority to determine whether Defense Department information is classified and has insisted it wasn’t.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a post on X that officials in the thread didn’t discuss “war plans.” She also said the White House Counsel’s Office “has provided guidance on a number of different platforms for President Trump’s top officials to communicate as safely and efficiently as possible.”

Goldberg said in a statement: “The information I received on this Signal chat included the full name of an active CIA officer; human targeting information that could affect an adversary’s understanding of U.S. intelligence sources and methods; the sequencing of upcoming attacks; the weapons used in forthcoming attacks; the exact times attacks were supposed to start (information I received before attacks were launched); and real-time damage assessments that, again, could compromise sources and methods.”

The statement continued: “Any responsible national security expert would consider the information contained in this Signal chat to be of the greatest sensitivity, and would agree that this information should never be shared on non-government messaging apps.”

Hegseth, who was among 18 users in the Signal group, on Monday criticized Goldberg and said that “nobody was texting war plans and that’s all I have to say about that.”

Since It’s Not Classified

Since none of this is classified, my simple suggestion is: The Atlantic should release 100 percent of it, with one name redacted.

Then we will see who said what, whether Hegseth is a liar, and whether Ratcliffe is either a liar (or has a bad memory or was sleeping during the meeting).

To protect the one CIA agent mentioned by name, redact that name.

Ok, call me skeptical. How did a journalist hostile to current administration just happen to be added to Signal chat group. Mike Waltz or an aid created the group by inviting participants. If inadvertent, he or aid had to have journalist contact information on device. Either a set up by aid or Mr. Waltz has used journalist in past for selective leaks of information (assume the later). Of course Waltz denies any relationship or prior communications. Assume Mr. Waltz soon to be given the opportunity to spend more time with his family.

Maybe the Atlantic read your blog, Mish. Because they released some more details from the text chain.

And I’m not a high-level Trump Cabinet appointee, but I would certainly call those details “war plans”

“Moreover, over 40 percent of the undocumented population in the country are individuals who have overstayed their visas, not entered through the US-Mexico border. Finally, while the number of undocumented in the country increased by 650,000 from 2020-2022, other undocumented individuals and families, especially from Mexico and Asian countries, have been leaving the United States.”

I am comprehending that there were lies, Mish.

I am also comprehending that the BIGGEST LIE was when Trump said that he wanted peace.

The worst aspects of this entire episode is that we are STILL FIGHTING A WAR ON TERRORISTS long after 911. This will never end.

And DOGE does not intend to cut this spending and to cut the weapons industry, BY FAR THE BIGGEST SPENDERS.

That trough is deep!

Yup, the only maga guy I still communicate with (he’s a client so I don’t really have much choice) just bailed on the trump train because he actually believed Trump’s lies about being a candidate for peace, and instead bombed Yemen and gave Israel the green light to go back to killing Palestinians. The sheer incompetence and childish cover up here can’t be helping the mental gymnastics required to support this clown show.
Doge is a joke…. It’s going to end up costing billions short term thanks to gutting the IRS right before tax season. And now things are falling apart over at social security… No fraud discovered… And because they are proceeding unconstitutionally, any imagined savings will vanish like smoke as the courts continue to rule against them… this will not end well for the Republicans.

How did that Goldberg of Atlantic get included in chat ?

Who had access to (or hacked into) National Security Advsier Walz’s phone to put Goldberg’s phone number in the contact list ?

Walz came out and lambasted Goldberg so its not as though he ever communicated with Goldberg before.

Goldberg is a Democrat scumbag who thought Biden was genius and Soros is Yahweh.

I’m surprised they would knowingly communicated classified info on the Signal app. I doubt it had that level of specify to jeopardize personnel like give the names and addresses of their spies and informants in Yemen, etc.

Brian McCormack rises to the top of suspected Waltz staffer who put Goldberg on call. McCormack was a former aid to Dick Cheney and a Jeb supporter in 2016. Maybe he has an axe to grind? Maybe he’s been leaking to Goldberg for a long time?

I doubt that classified info was passed which would jeopardize the safety of American military personnel or any info that compromised a mission.

It was not even embarrassing info as I’m not surprised the Vice President said western Europe is a free loader.

He was referring to that the navies from France, Germany (if it has one), United Kingdom, etc. are not providing adequate military force in that region to protect maritime shipments to Europe.

That is what the Democrats are trying to distract from and make this all about strawman arguments that classified info was comprised

As I understand it, Signal connections are by a telephone number, not an email address.

Unless this guy’s number is one digit off from someone who was supposed to be invited, the question is WHO had this guy, Jeffrey Goldberg, on their contact list in their phone and WHY?

Waltz denies having the number on his phone, so someone else must have had it. It didn’t appear out of thin air.

Someone who has leaked in the past must have had Goldberg’s number. Don’t think that would be Waltz or Hegseth, but what do I know? Maybe Brian McCormack? He was an aid to Dick Cheney and supported Jeb. They need to set a leaker trap and fire whoever it was.

Discussing attacking a group in a different country when said group and country aren’t a threat to the U.S. and indicating they’re doing it because they can and to prove a point to other uninvolved countries is no longer being erroneously described as “war plans”? That’s a step in the right direction for media outlets. \s

Once upon a time such things would be a war crime and kept out of the public domain. Now too many who care about the “story” don’t even stop to consider the whole picture. No need to ‘wag the dog’.

One can’t ignore U.S. actions (direct and via proxy) over the past decade and think that the current administration has casus belli based on the event you reference.

If you genuinely think that any activity by any group in Yemen is a threat to the U.S. then it must be about #500 on your list of threats.

Sen. Dick Blumenthsl said that this is a potential of the Espionage Act. He lied about serving in Vietnam.
Mark Warner was very pious in his questioning of Tulsi Gabbard. He was part of the Russia collusion hoax and communicated directly with a lobbyist for a Russian oligarch about connecting with Christopher Steele. Warner intimated that the committee looking at the matter had evidence proving wrongdoing by Trump. The committee had nothing.
Joe Biden lied about his knowledge of confidential files in his garage and sharing that info.
Know what? I don’t give a crap about whatever lying you’re accusing anybody of. I hope that they tell Mark Warner and Dickie B to go suck it.

Actually, it’s not worse. It pales in comparison to the magnitude of what Hillary Clinton did.

Hers went on for years. Hers was permanently stored rather programmed to disappear after a few hours. Hers was copied to an additional server run by a private citizen who was a high profile convicted sex offender. Hers was serviced by totally unvetted technicians for years. Hers was using a format that was universally acknowledged to be a high security risk unlike Signal which is a very secure system and used because of that. She swore an oath in writing and verbally that she would one hundred percent *not* do what she did but went ahead and did it anyway.

And I strongly doubt that any of the people involved in this admitted fiasco would physically destroy all computers and phones involved to avoid having to comply with an inquiring court order as Hillary Clinton did.

It’s a black and white violation of security rules to use a public channel for classified communication. It doesn’t matter whether the channel is encrypted or not, Goldberg’s sneaking into the chat is a perfect example of why it is a violation. I’m sure the people in that chat were aware of the rules. It was their obligation to shut down the chat immediately if the conversation strayed into a classified domain. They did not. Hegseth, Vance and Gabbard have been through this many times in their careers in the military. Ratcliff is head of the CIA. Waltz is the President’s National Security Advisor. Best practice is this: use a qualified security officer (I’m sure the White House has dozens of them) to manage your communications. Then if there is a failure, that person will lose his job. In this case, Waltz should be frog marched out of the White House (actually, that should happen regardless for his being a big pal of Jeffrey Goldberg, a man who hates Trump and wakes up every day on a mission to destroy him.)

ron
ron

Reply to  Arthur Fully

Signal *is* the secure system. The qualified security officers you mention *use* Signal. It is a very secure system as proven by the fact that there is no record stored anywhere for subsequent detection. Just make sure you don’t include the wrong people in the conversation. But then that has always been the problem with a security system. Include the wrong people and it can’t work as intended no matter how good it is.

The one shortcoming is that it is comparatively new. Now everybody that uses it has learned to do something basic. Check to see who is included the chat, continually. Keep your eyes open, keep checking.

The fact is that Trump and all his people hate the Atlantic and for reason so why was the reporter included in a prior signal group chat and then forget to remove him? It is possible of course. Clinton’s “classified” emails, are not in the same universe as using a non-approved communications app anyone can download on their smartphone to discuss imminent and later real-time details about an ongoing military operation. The Atlantic? SERIOUSLY??…………Absolute fraud, fake news and lies, no news value AT ALL………….Mish, please, get the TDS checked out

What does the overall “news value” of the Atlantic have to do with whether it actually HAPPENED? MDS is just as bankrupt as TDS. We’ll see good things happen under DJT and we’ll see bad. This one is boneheaded. Call it truthfully and not emotionally.

I would ban any idiot who makes posts like these about a source. Yes, that would mean you.

The Atlantic may lean left but they do write some good articles and are a respected service among people with at least 1/2 of a brain.

Sources don’t matter? Please. Yes, sources matter. It is a legit question.

Excepting Covid and vaccine information ( they ignore the evidence there is something wrong with this ‘official view’, the Atlantic is a great and trustworthy source of information. But I guess any source that criticizes Trump and thinks he’s a moron (most Repub reps agree, if you read what they say privately) must be “fake”.
Recommendation: any time you hear someone call something “fake news” – then regard it as true.

I watched some of this song and dance performance today. What a crap show!

Why not just own up to the deed?

Say, ‘Hey, we messed’. We’re going to learn from this mistake and make sure it doesn’t happen again’.

Trumps mental illness will not allow him to take blame or admit failure. As much as I hate to admit it, it’s not really his fault, he’s a sick man and deserves pity. Oh and should never be in any position of authority in the govt or even private business.

It seems to point to some unwellness somewhere. There’s a limit to how much can be accomplished in too short of a time.

I suppose there isn’t a “Security Classification Guide” associated with this information, so it therefore could have been “unclassified”, but possibly “For Official Use Only” (FOUO)? 🙂 The fact that all of these appointees are discussing things like this over open e-mail vs. on the government’s classified “SIPR” net, shows they are extremely careless, and need to get their act together! Hopefully the adult in the room will also require them to re-accomplish the annual on-line COMSEC training course, that all DoD Active Duty, GS and contractors are required to complete!

Now THIS is the salient point. These actors were using Signal to avoid having their conversations logged and tracked. This was the same thing that got Hillary Clinton in trouble.

Except that Hillary had her own server to hide the fact that she used her position as Secretary of State for quid pro quo arrangements for donations to the Clinton Foundation from which she, her husband and her daughter Chelsea Hubbell skimmed tens of millions of dollars.

None of these allegations were proven, for otherwise they would have all gone to jail.

And “her own server” was certainly a lot safer than any Signal server.

Her server in the bathroom was probably not safe since it was not managed by the proper IT people. Its security was close to nonexistent. Surely it was hacked but since we don’t what was on it no one can say whether it had secrets on it or not.

not only were they not proven, they were affirmatively disproven. none of this matters to MAGA. they still think Trump won in 2020. I mean why even try talking to such idiots about what’s real?

Some Americans think that accidentally sharing national security level information about imminent war plans is a breach of duty. We understand many conservatives don’t care when their own do it, but imagine the outrage were Biden’s team to accidentally copy in a reporter to private meeting like that. No wait, don’t imagine it, keep your head buried deep in the sand, you like it that way apparently.

This is true but what do the Dems want? A promise not to do it again? A sacrificial firing? Or are they happy just to beat off on the issue?

This was bad. It also has a Vindman smell to it.

If the facts are as reported, that reporter was included for a reason. And that reason was to create the firestorm and set the stage for future Democrat posturing and calls for resignations. I think they know who did it. The real question is, who was actually behind it.

They are desperate and it shows.

Some people feel it is wrong to treat national security and intelligence sharing as a game for partisan politics.

And then there’s fake “whistleblower” Eric Ciaramella who did exactly that and was lauded as a hero by dems.

The problem wasn’t the technology, it was who was invited. I’m fine with canning Mike Waltz. He’s a neocon Israel-firster. Unfortunately Trump is Israel-first, too. He probably converted.
