No Surprise, House Speaker Johnson Proposes Same Plan as McCarthy

There are likely big surprises elsewhere, but there is no surprise in this corner regarding Johnson’s plans to keep the government running.

Mike Johnson Unveils Plan to Ward Off Government Shutdown

Please check out Mike Johnson’s Plan to Ward Off Government Shutdown

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) unveiled a two-step short-term spending proposal that would keep money flowing to federal agencies into early next year, in a bid to stave off a partial government shutdown late next week.

Johnson presented the plan on Saturday, a week before federal agencies risk shutting down once current funding runs out. The measure wouldn’t impose spending cuts, and it also wouldn’t implement tougher anti-immigration rules at the U.S.-Mexico border, which some Republicans had said was critical to get their support.

According to a document obtained by The Wall Street Journal, if the two-step plan doesn’t pass, House Republicans will turn to what they call a full-year continuing resolution, keeping spending flat—although it would contain “appropriate adjustments to meet our national security priorities.”

“It’s a good thing the speaker didn’t include unnecessary cuts and kept defense funding with the second group of programs,” a Senate Democratic leadership aide said.

Already however, there were signs of trouble from spending hawks. Some Republicans have said that they oppose any temporary spending extension without cuts and that Congress should focus instead on finalizing individual spending bills for the entire year.

“It’s…100% clean. And I 100% oppose,” said Rep. Chip Roy (R., Texas) on social media.

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) was ousted last month after he endorsed a temporary spending bill that passed with more Democratic support than Republican votes hours before the government was set to shut down on Sept. 30. On that measure, 90 Republicans voted against the proposal

What a Hoot

Johnson proposed the same plan that got McCarthy ousted. If more that 4 republicans republicans vote against the measure it will require Democrats to vote for it.

Many people told me Johnson would be different.

Will they pretend Johnson is different or will they act surprised?

This razor thin GOP caucus is going to keep dicking around until they cause immense harm. Better than 50/50 that enough country club GOPs align with Dems to pick a compromise speaker to save their portfolios. Johnson (who claims not to have a bank account) is making national budget decisions? Thats as weird as it gets.

Mish doesn’t get it.

No one wants to be captain of the Titanic **AFTER** it hit the iceberg.

No one wants to be in any leadership position in Washington DC **WHEN** not if it declares bankruptcy.

Uncle Sam is bankrupt. Mish thinks he can stick his head in the sand while Yellen prints money like Zimbabwe, but both of them are wrong.

Yellen can print money, but she can’t make creditors accept it. It doesn’t matter what currency the debt is in, or what currency they print — if creditors don’t accept it, it won’t work.

Why would anyone competent, either party, want to be Speaker? Why would anyone want to be President?

The reason we are getting Trump vs Biden is because no sane person wants the job. That’s why we got Obama, McCain, Sanders, Bush II, Hilary, and all the other screw ups…. no one competent wants to be captain of a sinking ship.

There is nothing special or different about Congress. Put Pelosi back in. Put McCarthy back. Put AOC and the sqaud. Put Boener back in. Put in Debra or Larry Graham. Doesn’t matter, still bankrupt.

Unless someone has a spare $170 TRILLION with a “T”, the story is not going to change. Taxpayers don’t have $170 trillion. Gates, Buffett, Bezos and Musk don’t have it either. The middle class is putting their groceries on their credit cards. China and Saudi Arabia don’t have $170 trillion, and they are using whatever they do have for themselves.

Severe spending cuts are going to happen, its just a question of when they are forced and by which creditor.

Bull sheet. Shutdown the government, for years if they dare. Yes, there will be some suffering, but what’s compromise without pain.

Rumor has it that the US is taking on a large number of casualities from attacks over in Syria and Iraq. But the Biden administration is hiding this fact because it knows the political blow back will not support its Israel first (AIPAC) policy.

I’d certainly vote for Col. McGregor. I heard his talk with Tucker the other day. This guys knows his stuff. And, I believe we’ve arrived at the point where we need a uber patriotic, decorated former military member to lead our country.

This is a sad commentary that one of the major jobs of Congress is to pass a budget which they have had for several months. By my count they have passed 0 but would appreciate a correction if I am wrong. My solution – lock them in a room until they get it done. Start doing your job and stop complaining about all the cheats living off government subsidies. Congress is the #1 example. It is an embarrassment that we live of CRs and a two month CR is considered a success.

> That is exactly what Johnson has done. He did it in a most unorthodox way compared to past performances, but I like it.

If lawmakers fail to pass a spending plan by Friday, many government operations will grind to a halt until Congress acts. Government functions that are deemed essential, however, will continue.

So I agree, let the Democrats sit there until they come around and vote to re-open the Government. Essential functions continue, so no effective sob stories by the MSM (they will try anyway).

Any, and I mean ANY complaints whatsoever, need to be quickly sent to the Democrat Party to Open It Up!!! The Republicans have done their jobs, so now it’s up to the Democrats to sign off and move forward OR NOT…

– To get the bill approved by a majority vote in the House, Johnson will first need to get a rule approved to set the parameters for a floor debate. Johnson can probably afford to lose only four Republicans to approve it.

> I Guess we will know by Friday, if the Republicans (RINO’s specifically) will support their collective Speaker, and unanimously vote for approval. They should finally begin to act like a Party and stick together for “there“ newly elected Speaker!

– If they can’t pass a rule, it would have to pass under suspension of the rules, which requires a two-thirds majority. That means a large number of Democrats would be needed to approve the bill.

> At this point the DEM leadership will understand that the GOP leadership is splintered yet again, and stand down and let the GOP continue to destroy themselves. Could you blame the?

– GOP leadership sources say they haven’t made a decision on how to proceed.

> In Other words, The RINO’s have put out word via the MSM, and Social Media, that they don’t like it. If they feel enough backlash, then they will vote lockstep, for now anyway.

– DEM leadership is critical of Johnson’s strategy, saying keeping the government open in two steps is untenable. But they also acknowledge Johnson avoided spending cuts, which had been their red line.

> If that sounds like the RINO’s response, it’s because it is! RINO’s ARE DEM’s just not on paper. They too are semi quietly telling the MSM and Social Media that they don’t like it. Hoping it doesn’t damage them too much either, but will be enough to persuade the RINO’s to vote “No” Otherwise they will sit and be quiet.

– If lawmakers fail to pass a spending plan by Friday, many government operations will grind to a halt until Congress acts. Government functions that are deemed essential, however, will continue.

> Sounds to me Mish, that Mr. Johnson has the RINO’s and DEM’s right where He Wants Them! I like his Outside The Box approach and his steadfast loyalty to the Country Overall! Nice to finally SEE!!!

Stu, in a few short paragraphs you have illustrated why the Uniparty WORKS (for them, not us). Our “system” is like a irritating plumbing leak that not one good plumber could ever fix. “Overhaul” is another word that comes to mind. I find this shit tiresome.

Fair enough, but our biggest difference appears to be, that you feel as though “could ever fix” Where I feel more like “have to fix”

I plan on being around for awhile still, so I am on the fixing side of things. Just need the right people to make a difference. Johnson’s in good, now get McConnell out and good, now the trifecta with Trump elected.
Better with these 3 and a chance to save what we have…

Comments on this website overwhelmingly tend to be from critical thinkers across the political spectrum with thoughtful and insightful wisdom. We’ve all had enough censorship; let free speech reign.

The most amusing thing is that some people actually believe that Americans just vote out of this situation.

The US fed government collects about $4 trln and spends now about 5.8/-6 trln.
No way, no how, it will be resolved! IT IS BANANA COUNTRY levle on steroids.

You are not the the first to notice the similiarities. But it’s not just the fiscal situation. It’s also the corruption, the cultural degeneracy and who’s in charge.

One thing you can count on is that the very few reasonable and sane people in DC promoting even mild fiscal restraint and a focus on our own border security will be labeled as “extremists,” “far-right,” or worse….

This is why Jordan didn’t get the nod. The UniParty members knew he was much more likely to push for tougher border security measures as part of the next CR. We’ve had a least 8M illegals pour across the SB. It’s estimated that 6M will walk across, oftentimes assisted by the CBP, before FJB is run out of town. That’s 14M illegals. On what planet is there anything good from that unless you’re a cheap, illegal labor loving UniParty member?

To continue the ridiculousness, the Federal government will shut down, and stay that way, until the air traffic controllers ($170k per year per person) are about to miss their second paycheck, and start to quietly mention that a) they are starting to get sick and b) they are gonna start slowing down takeoffs from Washington DC to Los Angeles, meaning lots of rich people will be late to their parties in CA. The problem will be solved the next day, as it was in 2017.
