The presence of Bombardier in Wichita supports a local workforce of more than a thousand employees, who contribute their talent and expertise to our nation’s defense and aerospace capabilities.
This afternoon, I reached out to the Trump administration to make certain the President is aware of the significant contributions of Bombardier to Kansas and the importance of its presence in Wichita to many Kansas workers at Bombardier and in the Bombardier supply chain.
I will continue working to see that Bombardier’s manufacturing operations not only remain in Kansas but continue to grow and create American jobs. Kansas is home to a hardworking, skilled workforce, and I will continue welcoming leaders in aircraft and defense manufacturing to do business here in the Air Capital of the World.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to ban Bombardier jets from the United States began to backfire on Tuesday after Republicans in Kansas, where Bombardier employs around 1,500, vowed to protect those jobs ahead of a key November election.
Roger Marshall, a Republican U.S. senator for Kansas who is running for re-election, said he would fight to save Bombardier jobs in his state. “I’ve already taken that concern inside the Oval Office,” he said. Bombardier has 3,500 jobs in the U.S., more than 40% of which are in Wichita, Kansas.
Democrat Adam Hamilton, who is running against Marshall for Senate, said on X on Monday that Bombardier supports 1,500 Kansas families with good-paying jobs and “now the president is trying to take that away.”
It’s a change for the highly integrated aerospace sector, which has emerged comparatively unscathed by Trump’s broader tariff war that has slapped duties on other industries like autos.
Three aviation lawyers interviewed by Reuters said it was not immediately clear how Trump could bar Bombardier private jets from being delivered to American customers since they have been approved by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. The White House has not commented.
“It’s creating a lot of anxiety on both sides of the border,” said David Hernandez, an attorney with Vedder Price in Washington. “This makes no sense.”
Congressman Ron Estes, a Republican who represents Kansas’ 4th district, said on Monday night on the social media site X that he opposes tariffs on aerospace, and defended the Canadian planemaker’s contribution to his state.
“Bombardier supports an extensive American supply chain, boasts maintenance and repair capabilities across the U.S., and is trusted by our military for critical national security missions.”

“We are actively recruiting for 500 open positions in America,” the company said in a statement provided to Al Jazeera on Wednesday. “They comprise net new positions, as well as planned retirement replacements and backfill for usual turnover in the 3500+ employment base.”
The jobs will include positions at a new service centre in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which is set to open in mid-November, Bombardier said.
In a statement to Al Jazeera on Tuesday, Bombardier said it already employs 3,500 people in the US, and pointed out that it builds its products in the country, including wings made in the state of Texas and flight control components made in California. Apart from the upcoming Fort Wayne service centre, it has existing service centres in five other states, and spends $2.5bn on suppliers each year, the company said.

Re: The Gulfstream BS from Trump. Of course it’s a malicious lie, just like everything else Trump accuses Canada of, like forever. Canada isn’t blocking Gulfstream sales in Canada. Two new models (the G700 and G800) are currently in the process of being certifed by the Canadian government for operation in Canadian airspace, just like the FAA has to certify new aircraft models before they’re allowed to operate in US airspace. *Unless* an exemption is issued, which the FAA did for these 2 Gulfstream models.
The exemption that the FAA issued was for fuel system icing tests. It gave Gulfstream 3 years (ending at year-end 2026) to complete the tests, which the FAA had recently upgraded to a more strict version. But due to Canada’s much colder climate, the Canadian government did not exempt the G700 and G800 from its version of fuel system icing tests. Bear in mind that it’s not the Canadian government nor the FAA that actually performs the tests. Gulfstream performs the tests with government regulator oversight.
So any delay in the testing process is much more likely a Gulfstream issue, not a government regulation issue. Transport Canada, the government body that’s responsible for certifying aircraft for operation in Canadian airspace, actually did certify 5 individual Gulfstream G700/800 serial numbers earlier this year for some reason, possibly to fend off political pressure from Trump because the US president was already crying then about Gulfstream jets being blocked for sale in Canada. But there were probably operational restrictions accompanying that piecemeal certification approach for those 5 jets (though this isn’t public knowledge) and type certification (i.e. for *all* G700 and G800 Gulfstreams) still hasn’t been issued by Transport Canada because apparently it’s waiting for Gulfstream to complete the tests.
So there you have it, Trump is inserting his enormous stupid ego into a regulatory process that’s crucial to the safe operation of aircraft, just so that he can make it seem like Canada is the bad guy, cheating and ripping off the innocent and apparently helpless USA yet again, just as it’s done for decades — according to him. If Canada folds on this made-up issue in the face of Trump’s threats — which could cost the country a lot of economic damage if it holds firm — it would put mainly *American* lives at risk (potentially), because most of the G700 and G800’s customers are Americans, see? IT’S ALL SO TIRESOME!
Just a little background re: FAA certification and why Transport Canada may have refused to temporarily exempt the G700 and G800 from the fuel system icing tests like the FAA did — and is still refusing to do so despite Trump’s tantrum on the issue earlier this year. Like many governmental aircraft certification bodies, Transport Canada lost trust in the FAA’s certification process following two 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019. Transport Canada initially certified the 737 MAX for operation in Canadian airspace in 2017 by rubber-stamping the FAA’s type certification for this aircraft earlier that year. This was a common practice back then and Europe did the same.
But after the 737 MAX crashes and the subsequent investigations revealed many shortcomings in the FAA’s type certification process including excessive deference to Boeing and other evidence of regulatory capture, trust in the FAA turned to suspicion very quickly, and before the 737 MAX was allowed to fly again in Canadian or European airspace, both Canada and Europe insisted on conducting independent and extensive tests before re-certifying the 737 MAX, following design changes and the implementation of other regulatory requirements.

As for the credibility issue, the FAA regulatory capture will be very costly for American aircraft manufacturers and operators long after this kerfuffle. My understanding is Canada took a long time certifying 4 Gulfstream aircraft models which precluded Canadian sales and their flying in Canadian air space, there was no tariff issue. The certs were granted for all the models in February this year. Taking a long time for aircraft approvals and not necessarily getting it right is something the US government exceeds at and has no standing to call out Canada on the subject. By bringing this up a half year after the dust settled is Trump adding to an uproar that should have been left alone. It is another example of superior negotiating, NOT! What a mess. We need cabinet secretaries to do their duty and exercise Amendment 25 section 4.
