Republicans Have a Huge Gap in Ad Spending, But Does It matter?

The Republican cash edge is entirely in the Senate. The House is a lost cause.

The Ad Spending Gap

The New York Times reports That Huge Republican Cash Edge? It’s in Senate Races, Not House Races.

Republicans have an enormous financial edge in this year’s midterms. But with two weeks until the election, it is now clear that their spending advantage is overwhelmingly playing out only in the advertising battle for the Senate — not the House.

In the seven Senate races that the Cook Political Report rated as tossups, Republicans are outspending Democrats on advertising by $947 million to $625 million. That is a breathtaking advantage of more than $320 million in the key races that could determine which party wins control of the Senate, according to a tally by AdImpact of ads that have been already been shown and future reservations.

It is a very different story in the House, though. Republicans still have an advertising advantage in the closest House races, but it is relatively narrow — just a $14 million edge across the 21 races rated as tossups.

There are a number of explanations for the discrepancy.

Senate races generally attract more money and attention than congressional contests. Elon Musk’s enormous spending on the Texas Senate race is also a factor: He gave nearly $170 million to super PACs backing Ken Paxton, the Republican Senate nominee there — a huge injection of cash from one person.

But it is also appears to be an indication that both parties — and their donors — are viewing it as increasingly unlikely that Republicans will be able to hold onto their House majority. The battle to win control of the Senate, though, remains on a knife’s edge. Republican donors are accordingly spending big in key Senate races.

In six of the seven tossup Senate races, Republican ad spending is far outstripping Democrats’. The biggest gap is in Texas ($141 million), but there are chasms also in Ohio (nearly $90 million), Maine (nearly $32 million) and Michigan ($33 million).

Only in Kansas — where Republicans are engaged in a late rescue mission — is the spending even close. There, Democrats had an edge of less than $2 million.

“We came into this cycle preparing for the worst-case scenario in Republican spending, and planned accordingly,” said CJ Warnke, a spokesman for the House Majority PAC, the biggest super PAC for House Democrats. “While we’re fighting deep into Trump territory, the G.O.P. spending advantage will ultimately leave some winnable seats on the table.”

These ratings are fluid. Cook has moved numerous races into the Democratic direction in recent weeks.

Dollars spent do not directly equal ads aired. Candidates are entitled to cheaper TV rates than super PACs are under federal law. Democrats are generally spending more on ads at that cheaper rate because Democratic candidates for both the House and the Senate are raising far more than Republican candidates. Republican groups, though, have a big advantage over Democratic ones, led by Mr. Trump’s allied super PACs and Mr. Musk’s wallet.

Julie Merz, the executive director of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, predicted that Democrats would win the majority, saying in a statement that they were working to “maximize every dollar and compete with Republicans and their dark-money backers.”

Democrat Candidates Crush Republican Counterparts

Every major Senate Democratic candidate is crushing their Republican counterparts in fund-raising.

But Musk has plowed hundreds of millions of dollars into Republican efforts giving Republicans a huge edge.

Which Party Will Control the Senate?

Does Republican spending matter? Is it enough?

For all that spending, there has been no discernable movement in odds.

Polymarket Odds

  • September 19, 2026: Democrats 61 Percent
  • October 19, 2026: Democrats 65 percent

In the period between Sep 19 and Oct 19 the Democrat low was 61 percent and the high 68 percent.

Nate Silver Deluxe Senate Projection

On September 18, the Nate Silver Senate Deluxe model gave Democrats a 59.8 percent chance of winning.

Silver was still calling this a tossup. I wasn’t.

On the 19th a new batch of polls were in favor of Democrats and the odds for Democrats never fell below 65 percent again.

On October 5, Silver hut 73 percent for Democrats and never dropped below that number since.

Are Republicans Spending Enough Money?

I went down the rabbit hole to find out what was happening to hundreds of billions of dollars of extra Republican spending. Curiously, I encountered the Red Queen who was in competition with Alice to see who could throw the most money into the air.

The Red Queen had bigger cash pile from which to throw, and Alice was struggling to keep up.

But no matter how much money the Red Queen tossed to the wind, the there was no discernable impact on the votes the queen hoped to buy. A Cheshire Cat was in a nearby tree keeping score of money tossed and the polling results, grinning at the spectacle.

“Now, here, you see, it takes all the spending you can do, to keep in the same place,” said the Red Queen to Alice.

As I walked out of the rabbit hole, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much the Red queen looked like Elon Musk.

I personally have decided to become a Republican voter because of their truthful ads.

Trump’s own rallies have consistently been better advertising for Dems than anything they can pay for. “Look at this guy’s beautiful butt”, “I can identify a picture of a lion!”, “everything is cheaper than ever!” All genius statements.

You can put it in a fancy box, wrap it in a bow and you can spray paint it gold, but a turd is a turd.

The Democrats have free, repetitive, interactive, personal, impactful, in-your-face, saturation advertising – every time their credit card is placed in a gas or food store credit card slot.

This advertising is extremely effective for most everybody – except those with Trump-Jim-Jones Syndrome, high on the cool-aide who, will even monkey-say-monkey-do side with Putin.

Money always matter, but sentiment is a very close second imo. That’s what’s needed to get people to show up at the polls, regardless of any polls, no pun intended. Right now the Republicans have both of those in play imo.

I regularly get text messages from Musk’s scumbag operatives asking me if I am white and predicting dire consequences for me if I don’t vote for the fascist cult. I have lived here 40 years and it has gotten worse every single year as white Christian fascists have gained control. Almost every Republican office holder here is either a rapist or a pedophile but then so is much of the white population.

Well part of the problem with GOP has been their illogical contradictions. Case in point, Trump/GOP say the border is secure yet Greg Abbott keeps saying the border is not secure. So which is it?

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2026/10/18/800113387/immigration/trump-says-the-border-is-secure-abbott-keeps-declaring-an-emergency/

Last month, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott repeated a claim he’s made for the past five years. He stated that the number of people crossing the Texas-Mexico border illegally “posed an ongoing and imminent threat” across the state.
In doing so, he renewed a border security disaster proclamation that has greatly expanded his powers without going through the state Legislature.

Well the border is a threat when elections are happening then they magically disappear when they’re not I guess. These guys are so dumb, the only game they know is to bring out the old tropes and try to scare the suckers and losers. We’ll see if it works but I suspect most people are tired of inflation, stupid tricks, and diminishing quality of life.

Can’t wait to see the results of election day. I suspect one group or the other will get stomped.

Well with voices screaming what’s happening in France, is heading to America next, they best be prepared for that. I feel that we are.

In the recent past, Dem campaigns have been way richer than Republicans. For instance, Hillary outspending Trump massively and Dems always having much more money in NC races where I’m familiar.

What changed to give Senate Republicans more money? Defunding USAID and numerous “NGOs” from tax funds that got funneled to Dems? Just asking.

Musk gave around 150 million to the SLF, so that will help a whole lot.

I will stick with my recent anticipation of events to unfold, reasons stay and seem even stronger now. As more comes to light the best in Truth comes to be the majority in many cases. Group think that is untethered, becomes singular in sound, and rather quickly and often permanently.

Republicans hold Senate fairly easily now.

Dems fight like hell, and then with each other, and jeopardize the House while they are at it.

Alex Vindman vastly outspent Angie Nixon when he lost the democratic senate primary in Florida. Money didn’t do it for him.

Trump was once the outlier who went against the big campaign funds, even post-Citizens United, and found a cheap (tweeting) way to zoom past moneyed characters like Jeb Bush and Hillary. So dollars do not translate linearly to victories. Yet. Musk brings a whole new order of magnitude to this.

It’s more he message than the money.

Trump pulled together a message from various sources (his own 1980s messaging, Pat Buchanan, Rush Limbaugh, Ross Perot maybe) with a personalized touch that resonated far and wide. The audience had appeared that he could reach directly and infinitely cheaply through twitter.

By now though, even the more credulous fans might see a substantial part of that message as betrayed. But not all: that still leaves the loose ends of Dem vulnerabilities (border, woke overreach). These can touch raw nerves the Dems find hard to reach, and drown out a lot of economic concerns when the voter nears the booth. And I haven’t seen a clear affirmative Dem message/plan, in my limited exposure to campaign media.

At least the GOP/Red Queen’s efforts to move the election croquet hoops were muted.

Somewhere I saw it suggested the Texas House redistricting might even backfire, as it was drawn in a time when 2024-like Hispanic support for Trump’s team was assumed.

Musk carries a lot of water in Texas, well, liquidity. Now he suggests gifting a SpaceX share to each American kid. Bribes are cool now? But, as with such vaporware as flying taxis, underground freeways, colonies on Mars and Trump’s $5,000 post-midterm checks and Iraq victory, I’m still waiting for those croquet hoops to reposition themselves, and not in my favor.
