The Rhode Island National Guard started going door to door on Saturday in coastal areas to inform any New Yorkers who may have come to the state that they must self-quarantine for 14 days while Gov. Gina Raimondo expanded the mandatory self-quarantine to anyone visiting the state.
Raimondo also ordered residents to stay at home, with exceptions for getting food, medicines or going to the doctor, and ordered nonessential retail businesses to close Monday until April 13 to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. She also directed realtors and hotel operators to include new requirements that any out-of-state residents must quarantine for 14 days in their purchase agreements.
State Police set up a checkpoint on I-95 in Hope Valley on Friday where drivers with New York license plates must stop and provide contact information and were told to self-quarantine for two weeks, WPRI.com reported.
“I want to be crystal clear about this: If you’re coming to Rhode Island from New York you are ordered into quarantine. The reason for that is because more than half of the cases of coronavirus in America are in New York,” Raimondo said, adding that it’s not meant to be discriminatory.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the order “reactionary” and unconstitutional, saying he’d sue Rhode Island if the policy isn’t rescinded but believed they could “work it out.” “I understand the goal … but there’s a point of absurdity, and I think what Rhode Island did is at that point of absurdity,” said Cuomo, a Democrat.

So Democrats are all for diversity and against Xenophobia except when it comes to other Americans, then it’s OK.
Useless. I mean what’s next? Case numbers are rising in New Orleans, Chicago, etc.
Are you going to put up barriers for those areas as well?

For this to be constitutional I believe the feds need to be the one to do it. States aren’t allowed to mess with interstate trade, but federal law clearly reserves the right to quarantine. This is another case of Trump leading from behind, ie not leading at all, forcing states to fill in the void.
By the way the Florida tracker from Mish’s earlier post is showing dangerous acceleration in that state.

Modern fascism, some studies say, started in rural Italy in the form of local co-op to counteract financial/price manipulation. Going back further in Spain, I think from ancient lore, is the theme of a bundle of arrows used in heraldry, signifying combined strength, and some reckon all the way back to Sparta and its depictions of bundles of iron rods, their money as they rejected the rest of the wealth of neighbouring states.
A most obvious fascist symbol is the faches surrounding an axe, representing community supporting a decision maker, also ready to slay enemies.
Corporate fascism is use of law combined with economy to give a hierarchy of power, not far from the corporate state maybe.
Anyway, anywhere where there is a social hierarchy where real personal say is limited, and key decisions are dictated by a few, could be called fascist. That is just about every country in the world nowadays, you really have to return to small open community to escape that reality.
Voting just gives people some sense that they are participating, sort of obliges politicians with a reason to explain themselves, or put on a show. The checks and balances of any power system are designed to interfere with attempts at outright control, but often they become corrupted and end up as much part of the use of authority.
When OP draws his limits, he is referring to public space and exclusion from it, just like he might expect his country to exclude unwanted people from that space. If he is for open borders and basically no controls, then why is he recognising them, even if it is by saying that they should not exist ?
No one is stopping anyone from doing how they want, it just happens what some other people want is to confine or exclude those who might be carrying a virus. You want to tell them they cannot do that, well fascist yourself I guess.
Some other countries, particularly smaller ones, with society that is therefore closer to authority, people are quite civil about measures like this, but in the US I guess the relationship between population and authority is a bit more extreme sometimes.

I’m not getting on you for informing the board of available definitions but I am Q’ing if what defines fascism doesnt apply to so much of life itself? How much of the fascist definition applies to all political parties and movements throughout history and up to the present?
That is what I think also, but fascism is I suppose used as pejorative when the direction of that teamwork is seen as detrimental or oppressive to some/others.
I remember in Italy a woman being called fascist by a left winger, and she called back that at least she knew what she was.
Maybe attempts at definition are pointless also, because people either live a certain loyalty or they don’t , and loyalties always look different from the outside than actually living them ?

I was going to make a joke about catching a cab with Ernest Borgnine, but then remembered that he and a lot of that cast aren’t around anymore. At least ol’ Snake is still here.
This is getting bizarre! People should ask if they have a warrant.

Let’s be honest, we didn’t let it stop us from passing a bill numbering nearly 600 pages taking money from those who earned it and giving it to all kinds of people who didn’t. All without proper debate or roll call vote even though someone in Congress tried like hell to make them do it to – you know – follow the constitution…
Of course his efforts drew the ire of many citizens including even the esteemed Senator Kerry who took to Twitter and told everyone that the congressman had tested positive for “asshole”. Which of course everyone thought was funny and ballsy because the congressman – in trying to follow the constitution – was “risking lives.”
Given that the constitution didn’t apply in that situation, why should it apply to this one?
Believe it or not, it got way more bizarre during Lincoln’s Presidency.
You don’t need a warrant to tell people they need to self-quarantine since there isn’t a search involved. When they arrest you for leaving the quarantine you might have a case.
Remember the good ol’ days in early February when the US proudly donated a hundred million dollars of medical supplies to China to fight the coronavirus….

This week the State Department has facilitated the transportation of nearly 17.8 tons of donated medical supplies to the Chinese people, including masks, gowns, gauze, respirators, and other vital materials. These donations are a testament to the generosity of the American people.
Today, the United States government is announcing it is prepared to spend up to $100 million in existing funds to assist China and other impacted countries, both directly and through multilateral organizations, to contain and combat the novel coronavirus. This commitment – along with the hundreds of millions generously donated by the American private sector – demonstrates strong U.S. leadership in response to the outbreak….

Can’t really blame the governor for trying to protect her citizens, right? I mean – at least she’s being decisive, LOL
And the constitutionality of the move is not a foregone conclusion either way.
Something tells me we are all going to get a crash course in federalism before this is all over.
The last thing you want is people fleeing an area that has an outbreak like in NY and spreading the infection to areas that have hospital and hospital staff sized for the local population.
What happens if somebody from NY get sick and they local city is running out of hospital beds. Tell them to go back to a New York hospital so that a local resident can have the ICU bed.
What if the local hospital is full and half the people are natives of NY and now the local population starts showing up at the hospital. Do you kick out the NY people so that you local taxpayers get to use the local facilities?
It could get interesting.
Same with national distribution of medical supplies, they had to silence information on what they were moving to where in Spain because regional authorities were left short after their equipment was requisitioned – they were less than happy about that.
If you like your Martial Law, you can keep your Martial Law.
I have a sneaking suspicion that you will get to keep it even if you don’t like it…

In Spain they keep finding old people’s homes with bodies, some had been asking for basic medic service attention for a week.
The first virus patient released from ICU with national headlines, survived 36 hrs more, without headlines.
In southern Italy people without income are raiding supermarkets, there is a movement for a revolt on the 3rd of April, with videos from people without food locked down pledging allegiance.
I have family in South Africa, no flights and full martial law. They seemed happier to be there than Europe, I reminded them of the Suidlanders.
In Spain one locality is virus free by the mayor setting up strict measures for access. Another locality rioted when patients were moved there, they stoned police cars and blocked roads. Tourists are getting freaked out by people in hazmat suits wheeling out bodies and disinfecting whole floors. There are suggestions by government on press restrictions, on accessing localisation by mobile to track down people not where they should be.
So maybe when you have people surviving a week off a tube of toothpaste in the US you might get some sympathy there, but quarantining states, or just new arrivals, for two weeks is not a big deal I think…if it helps avoid any of the above.
What’s wrong with that why can’t they follow simple rules.
It’s one thing to cry about what you’re not getting and another to put other places in the same situation.
