Texas National Guard Seizes Eagle Pass Park to Stop Illegal Immigration

Over the objection of the Eagle Pass mayor, governor Abbott seized a public park that borders the Rio Grande river.

National Guard Showdown

In a first of a kind showdown, the New York Post reports Texas Gov. Abbott seizes Eagle Pass border park without warning to combat migrant crisis, mayor claims.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott took control of a public park in a border city plagued by illegal immigration without warning on Wednesday, its mayor alleged Thursday.

Eagle Pass Mayor Rolando Salinas said the state seized Shelby Park, erecting fences to keep out citizens — and even federal border agents — without any notice as part of Abbott’s emergency declaration to combat the migrant crisis.

Shelby Park, which abuts the Rio Grande, has been flooded with migrants crossing into Texas via the dangerous river.

“That is not a decision that we agreed to,” Salinas said in an impassioned speech Thursday. “This is not something that we wanted. This is not something that we asked for as a city.”

Texas Blocks Federal Border Agents From Processing Migrants

The showdown is not only with the Eagle Pass mayor. CBS reports Texas blocks federal border agents from processing migrants in Eagle Pass public park

After seizing control of Shelby Park in Eagle Pass, Texas National Guard units deployed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott have prevented Border Patrol agents from entering the area, the federal officials said. Border Patrol has used the park in recent weeks to hold migrants in an outdoor staging area before they are transported for further processing, including last month, when illegal crossings soared to record levels.

Earlier Thursday, Texas state officials prevented Border Patrol boats from patrolling that area, one of the officials added, requesting anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

In a filing early Friday with the Supreme Court, the Justice Department described the extraordinary standoff between Texas and the federal government.

“Texas’s new actions,” the Justice Department said, “demonstrate an escalation of the State’s measures to block Border Patrol’s ability to patrol or even to surveil the border and be in a position to respond to emergencies.”

Under federal law, Border Patrol has a legal responsibility to process migrants on U.S. soil and determine whether to detain them, transfer them to another agency, deport them or release them into the country, pending a court hearing. The international boundary between the U.S. and Mexico is located in the middle of the Rio Grande in Texas.

US Justice Department Files Suit Against Texas

The Biden administration immediately logged a suit straight to the US Supreme Court, the Department of Homeland Security v. State of Texas.

… Border Patrol learned that Texas National Guard members had begun erecting new concertina wire barriers, adding to others along an approximately 2.5-mile stretch of the border at issue in this case. App., infra, 3a. Texas also erected new fencing, located further inland than the original concertina wire. Ibid. That fencing further restricts Border Patrol’s ability to reach the river in particular areas. The relevant stretch includes the area of Shelby Park, which contains the boat ramp from which Border Patrol routinely launches the patrol boats it uses on this stretch of the Rio Grande.

Texas’s new actions since the government’s filing demonstrate an escalation of the State’s measures to block Border Patrol’s ability to patrol or even to surveil the border and be in a position to respond to emergencies. Those actions have also changed the situation on the ground from the account in prior filings in this Court, including Texas’s opposition.

Abbott Statements

“Texas is holding the line at our southern border with miles of additional razor wire and anti-climb barriers to deter and repel the record-high levels of illegal immigration invited by President Biden’s reckless open border policies,” Abbott spokeswoman Renae Eze said in a statement.

“Texas will continue to deploy Texas National Guard soldiers, DPS troopers, and more barriers, utilizing every tool and strategy to respond to President Biden’s ongoing border crisis.”

Wow.

Why is it that someone else has to do the Biden administration’s work for them?

“In a filing early Friday with the Supreme Court, the Justice Department described the extraordinary standoff between Texas and the federal government.”

The DOJ should be holding Biden accountable for not enforcing the law. Abbott shouldn’t have to step in to enforce the law.

During the time of the Alamo there was not 50 Civilian Sombreros in all of Texas. When Mexico was created after the Spanish Leaders of the territory were deposed: most of the Spanish territory in what is now The United States Of America was just a place on a map, not an area occupied by Mexicans.

The attempts to return US territory to Mexicans, through illegal invasion and population expansion through high birthrates is a specious liberal argument. It fails to address the dislocation of the original inhabitants of North America…… The Native American Indians.

Yep. I’m descended from Hernan Cortes and a lot of other conquistadors. Who originally stole the land. (Well, the only difference between the Nazis and Aztecs is that the Nazis had cooler looking helmets. So perhaps ‘liberation’ is a better word than ‘conquest’ even though not all the conquistadors were saints, that’s for sure). You have to read history, though, to know that. So, the Latinos will have to give it back to the full blooded Indians.

Seriously, large sections of Mexico were in revolt against the Mexican government throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. California, like Texas, would have broken away within a few years….. You read the names of the dead at the Alamo, most are Spanish, who were willing to die to be free. If anything, California and Texas should conquer Mexico City.

Probably the best book to read is The Conquest of Mexico, by William Prescott. The New World equivalent to The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbon, except Prescott cites his sources. Both are not b7 20th century standards ‘scientific’ historians, as if that was an insult. There was a story to tell, they told it with great insight and brilliant prose. Really, 90% of the information is in the foot notes, assuming you can read Spanish, Portuguese, Latin, Greek, Aztec, Arabic and one or two other Meso American languages, which of course Prescott could even though he was blind.

The second book is the somewhat lesser known Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Dias Del Castillo. Older Spanish, not a well researched masterpiece like Prescotts ( he was a foot solider and too busy trying to stay alive to do more than take a few notes here and there). But his, Ixtlilxochitl’s (prince of a ‘Switzerland” republic that rebelled agains the Aztecs) are the only first hand accounts of what happened, aside from Cortes’s long letters meditating on his hand in the present day suffering of the Indians. (Long story short, he conquered for gold and the true religion, and eventually, to eradicate Aztec rule which as a product of Western Civilization and Christianity, appalled him to his core. We call in genocide, now. The hope was that the Indians, who were to the Aztecs like Jews to the Nazis would to convert to Catholicism, as they did. Converts could not be enslaved in Spanish domains, 350 years before the Emancipation Proclamation to give some perspective. In the end, whatever else you want to say, when Cortez finally returned with 2000 men after his original army of 600 had ben at least 75% wiped out in a single night, and there was the slight change he might win, every single province in the Aztec empire revolted and send him troops. That sort of casts a pall on the PC view of the Aztecs being humane and advanced rulers. Yeah. Sure. That is the one big undeniable fact about the end of the Aztec empire. Interestingly, when he arrived back in Spain Cortez prayed literally for nine days and nine nights, on his knees, nonstop, for the sins he and the men he led had committed. Same chapel were Columbus gave thanks for his first return from the new world. Afterwards, Cortez was greatly upset about the mistreatment of Indians although he never had any doubt they were better off under Spanish rule, which I think is a very valid point with a small number of exceptions. There are sickos everywhere. God must weep.

Cortez landed at Vera Cruz with 600 men, about 20 crossbows, 17 horse, and around two dozen muskets which were less than useless. At no point did the guns make a significant difference in the fighting. They made noise, that was about it. The difference was that 1) the Spaniards were experienced soldiers, a lot of them, having fought the Moors until 1492. 2) they had steel weapons, a big plus 3) even though numbered perhaps 100 to 1 the Indians were used to battles where capture of captives to be sacrificed was the main point. What do you know, the Spaniards had the notion, from fighting the Moors for eight centuries, that within the laws of war you killed your enemy since it was a clash of cultures and civilizations (Gaza, 2023, anyone?). And, last of all, they really did believe that they had God on their side against a civilization which had become debased and ‘gone over to the dark side”. It was a war of liberation with, probably, good loot to be had from the oppressors.

Of course, this interpretion, er, I mean, factual freaking account, carries no weight with Mexican scholars or PC academia in the US today. Partly for racist reasons they can’t grasp the idea that an oppressive society that sacrificed 1000s of innocents a year to highly questionable gods (not to Queztlcoatl, though, he’d return and stop this badness which I think means people deep down knew it was deep wrong) could possibly exist. Certainly the White Man was responsible for all the bad stuff in the New World. Which is nonsense.

Sorry about the length of the rant but there were some things that had to be said.

Looks like the Latinos “La Raza” are finally reconquering (the reconquista) of the lands the Americans stole from them & that they, in turn, stole from the Native Americans. There were 62.5 million Native Americans when Columbus “discovered” this land and were systematically eradicated.

Seroiusly, because votes from their home states is what Congress cares about. They don’t give a damn about DC. If you want to put pressure on Congress you have to dump illegals in states that actually send reps and senators to congress. DC already has enough homelessness that a few tens of thousands of illegals on the street won’t make that big a difference. Which is a bad way to treat illegals. And homeless.

Immigrants mostly end up in urban areas. All urban residents lean more blue, immigrants typically lean even more blue.

From a long term political perspective, team blue is using immigration to buy future votes in states like Texas where there is no other way to break the red dominance.

Short term, there is a risk that some blue cities will turn more red if immigration causes too many local issues.

If anyone really wanted to help immigrants and reduce immigration, they would figure out how to promote stability and safety in their home countries. Immigration is hazardous. People aren’t doing it for fun. They’re doing it because their home countries are flaming piles.

“Texas has the right as a state to protect its boarders..”

Assuming you’re referring to borders….: It doesn’t. It would if it seceeded( nudge, nudge…) But closable borders are national contructs. Not state ones. As much as many there would like to, Arizona can’t close their borders to stem the tide of invaders from California.

Nor to Californians potentialy transiting on the way to Texas. Ditto Texas and US Federally accepted migrants potentially transiting to San Francisco. Or even ones intending to stay in Texas.

It could very well be a good idea to let states handle their own immigration, leaving the Feds out of it. But it would take an awful lot of changes to the nation state everything centric country and world we currently live in.

Although one can never underesteimate anyone in power in the current #dumbage; it’s hard to believe even Abbot being dumb enough to not recognise something so obvious. Chances are its mainly a stunt to shore up GOP credentials for a national run, once Trump is out of the way.

Each State does have the right to protect their borders. Since all rights not called out in the Constitution reside with the Sate(s), where does the US Constitution deny the States the right of self-defense? Remember, this is not Americans crossing an internal State border. This is illegal non-citizens crossing an international border.

“This is illegal non-citizens crossing an international border.”

The international border is, as per it’s moniker, a border between nations. Not between sub-national states. That this particular one arbitrarily happens to geographically coincide with the Texas state border for some part of it’s length, doesn’t somehow make US national border policing a matter for Texas.

I hear you on the Constitution. But no one cares about that anymore. In practice, our particular dystopian era is one in which nation states are granted complete dominion over pretty much everything and everyone, especially borders. They can overrule both The Pope, The UN and Texas on any matter of international concern.

The Feds are also the only ones who can determine whether someone is in the US “illegally” or not. Some 5 tear old may arrive at the Texas barbed wire with a posse openly calling for him to be ritually sacrificed in a Satanic ritual in hot pursuit. In which case, The US would, I suspect, grant the poor sap asylum. Meaning, by the time he gets to the Texas border situated a theoretical infinitesimal fraction of an inch past the US national one, he is no longer an “illegal.”

What Texas should do, is secede. The United States haven’t been a club worth being a member of, for decades running by now. It’s nothing more than a joke and an insult. Then Texans can police their own borders, and all else, as they see fit.
