Just like that, Republican dissidents were tossed aside and a government shutdown will be avoided via a stopgap measure until mid-November.
Shutdown Likely Avoided
The Wall Street Journal reports Congress Set to Avert Government Shutdown
The House voted 335-91 for the funding measure, which includes $16 billion in disaster relief but omits aid for Ukraine. It also excludes border-security measures sought by Republicans. The margin exceeded the two-thirds majority needed to clear the bill through the House, which considered the legislation under special procedures requiring a supermajority of votes. All but one Democrat voted in favor of the measure, while nearly half of Republicans voted against it.
In reaching for a compromise, Republicans argued that the party had exhausted its options after dissident conservatives derailed an earlier plan, and said that the only choice now was to pass a bill extending funding at 2023’s $1.6 trillion annual rate through Nov. 17. That squares with major components of the approach being taken in the Senate, except that the Senate version includes an emergency $6 billion for Ukraine.
McCarthy dismissed opposition from conservatives who have threatened to oust him as speaker. “If somebody wants to make a motion against me, bring it. There has to be an adult in the room,” he said after the vote.
Republicans missed an opportunity to send the message representative Matt Gaetz wanted.
The same bill that did pass plus some border security provisions with minimal aid to Ukraine (not a full blockage), may have gotten through the Senate.
Instead, as noted McCarthy’s House Bill Goes Down in Embarrassing 198-232 Vote.
I commented ….
One and Only Winner
The only winner in this battle is the Democrats. The idea that 10-12 holdouts are going to swing this puppy is nonsensical.
You may or may not agree with what Matt Gaetz wants, but that is irrelevant. Gaetz does not have the votes to replace McCarthy and 10 cannot tell 212 what to do.
The last vote for House Speaker went 15 rounds and if McCarthy is ousted, the next vote might go 30 or 100 rounds. Along the way, the top Democrat will get more votes than anyone Gaetz wants.
Gaetz is gleeful over handing a talking point to Democrats. No good can possibly come from it.
Nothing Instead of Something
And here we are. Instead of getting something, Republicans get nothing.
McCarthy now taunts Gaetz: “If somebody wants to make a motion against me, bring it.”

All over the DC metro area, fed employees are pissed. They won’t get another paid vacation. All while pretending to be suffering during the impasse.
And I won’t have to pretend to be maintaining systems who’s users aren’t working.
Minority parties cannot govern, especially when a minority within the minority party is pro-anarchy. Republicans on a national scale are the minority by a fairly wide margin. In Washington D.C. Republicans cannot dictate the agenda because they only hold a very narrow majority in one chamber of Congress. In a divided government, the majority party sets the agenda, and the minority party has a voice and can use that voice in either a constructive or destructive manner. The Speaker of the “Peoples’ House” chose constructive.
1) The “man of the house” might kick the debt ceiling twice for better targeting, to
hunt Biden from a shorter distance.
2) The Real Disposable Income tsunami is over. It started in Mar 2020 and lasted
a year until Mar 2021. The Anti Regulatory Act of 2006 enabled it for the second time. The first one, in Oct 2008, was a test.
3) There might be an inverse tsunami when the upper middle class and the rich will be depleted from their assets and arrogance. A negative feedback loop might send them down. Bubble up/ bubble down. A shooting star and a hammer.
4) US gov has fatty liver and an insulin resistance for higher debt.
1) Nobody will shut down the government just before Thanksgiving and the biggest travel days of the year. Do you want to be the reason the family didn’t get to see grandma? Can will be kicked in November too….
2) The welfare/warfare uniparty of RINOs, Neocons, warmongers, and war profiteers is never going to be denied money for the MIC. The main business of DC is influence peddling, and war remains the most profitable venture there.
3) Washington DC remains frighteningly out of touch with the rest of the nation. The barbed wire inauguration had all the optics of Pyongyang, and the scamdemic policies of martial law and forced injections are pure authoritarianism. The rest of the nation would be far better just seceding from a Beltway of corrupt parasites which feels like a foreign occupied regime despite the media propaganda apparatus’ best efforts.
“Washington DC remains frighteningly out of touch with the rest of the nation.”
But they are in touch with their self serving interests. Calls from constituents were 100 to 1 or more, against bailing out the bankers. Ultimately, with some pork added in by the Senate, congress bailed out the bankers.
Saw that comingā¦
On cue⦠The Dems have a plan for $$$ to UKRAINE. Biden Inc. just asked for Billions upon Billions More, and a side deal was struck before the Vote to send $$$ to UKRAINE anyway, but just not via that document.
Not surprising to me at all, and expected as I wrote aboveā¦
Nothing can be done about it. It will take care of itself though when the printer breaks. Nobody knows that day but it’s approaching faster and faster.
It is going to be funny when McCarthy has to turn to Democrats to remain speaker. It is going to be funnier when that too passes by about the same vote as today’s measure. To those who want no government, I say go find another country to live in.
The House is nominally controlled by the Republican branch of Uniparty, yet Democrats rule without any need to compromise.
We need different Republicans.
If that can’t be done, we might as well say the hell with it and focus on our own affairs.
uniparty D and R. anyone who has picked sides past 50 years has been HAD. it’s like pro wrestling.
it’s owners and serfs. that’s all.
Sorry, but this āshutdownā nonesense is nothing short of terrorism, and the MSM are willing accomplices in the evil grifting going on in the Swamp.
One down is a good start, but sheāll just be replaced by another corrupt grifter.
Speaking of grifters, the photo opp I want is Zelensky with Sen. Fetterman in their customary garb, to show that dress codes donāt matter.
Someone, anyone, please give Matt Gaetz a mirror so he can preoccupy himself admiring his hairdo for countless hours instead of, welp, whatever it is he does now.
While we’re at it, tell Boehbert and Greene all the cool cheerleaders are having a meeting in the girls room, only the coolest, most popular are allowed.
Problem = Solved.
I love shutdowns. The only problem with shutdowns is they don’t last long enough. I’d like to take this opportuity to thank the one first to shut down this week, Diane Feinstein.
Quote of the week!
THis was such a lopsided vote that Republicans could have held out for much more. Let’s see what happens in the Senate with Democrats missing 2 Senators.
McC might kick the can down twice, for 3 months, until Jan 2024, risking his career
for Biden, Hunter, Chuck and Hakeem..
Anyone else NOT holding their Breaths while this Clown Show, so spectacularly predicable, unfolded. NO ONE BELIEVES THIS SHIT ANY MORE.
I donāt trust the Senate for a moment, and not of either Party to be quite honest⦠More importantly at the moment however, is WHY 16B Funds for disaster relief.
That is an insane number in my opinion, and is there anyway by chance, that 16B can be redirected, after the fact, to letās say⦠Um.. Ukraine. Most Importantly, did McCarty know they could and would all along?
Just asking curious questions about a bizarre 16 Billion $$$ for disaster relief, when we couldnāt get a penny for multiple states, here in the U.S. a few months ago?
The Bill Doesnāt include $$$ for Ukraine, but I simply DO NOT TRUST McCarthy or ALL the RINOās to not send it there anyway, after the vote and everything is done to their liking. Where else is there a disaster right now, that would Require $16 Billion in disaster relief Hmm⦠JSā¦
This is what happens when you spend beyond your means. Everyone running around trying to steal their share of what’s left.
“And here we are. Instead of getting something, Republicans get nothing. ”
That last part that I put in bold, is true on so many levels and so many dimensions. I guess we’ll see how much the clowns learn in 45 days.
Behold, the decline of an empire.
And still, you consume the bread and circuses like your lives depend on it.
For the sake of the entire planet, vote someone in office that acts like a leader, capable of being the adult in the room and wants to stop people from dying in a bs-war.
I’m just hoping for some real leadership but maybe it’s a fool’s hope.
fool’s hope. the people in our empire are pathetic. democracy has always reflected the people. trump and biden and schumer and mitch……….are perfect reflections of amerikans. all empires crumble.
What exactly are the “disasters” that require $16 billion in Federal money? Seems like a massive slush fund to be spent by the Biden administration however it wants.
San Francisco could use the whole $16 billion and still be a disaster.
They are a disaster specifically BECAUSE governments have had access to $16 billion or more.
The more money government has, any government at any time, the more disaster you get. At the very least, once they are handed control over more than the $7 million America’s first government had.
Restricted to a $7 million budget, Biden would no doubt be a the greatest President in at least 2 centuries. OTOH, Every penny above that, is simply spent on purchasing ever greater offerings of disaster. Always and everywhere.
I agree with ThatsNotAll, except for the description of $16 billion as massive. We’ve been conditioned to view that level of government spending as petty cash.
Damn!
Lmao
I expect Gaetz will bring a motion that will fail.
This is full on Kabuki theater
Ninety Republicans voted against the bill. That is ninety votes looking for a new speaker.
who will replace McCarthy? My guess is another go along to get-a-long phony group of Republicans. I appreciate the 90 some republicans that held their ground. Of course it is completely possible this was a matter of sorting out which republicans and demos would play the part of those to go along to get along this time. I do not usually enter this discussion but IMO we are headed for default or German variety inflation. I wonder if US dollars burn faster or slower than the old Reichmark?
When things repeat themselves it difficult to predict if not impossible precisely how this will happen. But in the end as we all know, it will rhyme.
I nominate my š for the speakership. It might do a better job š¤£
it’s uniparty anyway
WHO CARES anymore
not my govt, not my ONCE GREAT COUNTRY
bunch of neocons and thieves
