“Misquoting” can already be called out, instantly, by the office with the world’s biggest megaphone. And Trump has sued journalist outlets multiple times: weird and unprecedented as that is.
“Mischaracterizing” as you put it, as long as consistent with the facts (but does not have to tell all facts, and does not have to be even-handed, never has) generally goes under opinion, which is free speech in its essence.
