You must be very bright. I like to think I’m fairly bright myself, but I had to do a lot of reading and thinking to work my way out of all the rubbish I was taught (and the threats that were made if I didn’t believe) in church and school. A lot of people don’t have as much time to do it in, as I have had.
I can remember the news services during the Viet Nam War. They played on our prejudices and ignorance, to get us to support a war that only got a lot of young chaps killed or injured. Journalists are part of the priesthood, the people who live by deception. The other parts are the teachers and the judiciary. They work with the soldiers (the chaps who live by the use and the threat of force) to keep honest people in a state of confusion, ignorance, and fear. (Education serves to shape them as cogs to serve the system. The evil ones are recruited to be priests themselves.)
You can blame people for allowing themselves to be deceived, but I blame the people who make a living by deceiving us a lot more.

“Misquoting” can already be called out, instantly, by the office with the world’s biggest megaphone. And Trump has sued journalist outlets multiple times: weird and unprecedented as that is.
“Mischaracterizing” as you put it, as long as consistent with the facts (but does not have to tell all facts, and does not have to be even-handed, never has) generally goes under opinion, which is free speech in its essence.

Free speech is very important. However, it isn’t the only thing that is important. Property rights are important, too, and I don’t think free speech rights mean much if you can’t rely on property rights. There is an interesting (fictional) scene in Ayn Rand’s book, “Atlas Shrugged,” in which Henry Reardon’s no-good brother spouts a lot of Communist nonsense in front of Henry, and Henry threatens to throw him out of the house. The brother piously asks, “Don’t I have freedom of speech?” and Henry replies, “On your own property. Not on mine.”
As I understand it, the idea of freedom of speech got its start in the English Parliament, where some less fluent members were having trouble framing their criticisms of government activity in a way that couldn’t be construed as disloyalty to the throne, and somebody suggested to the king that members of parliament be granted immunity from prosecution for anything they might say in parliament. They could still be asked to apologize and/or withdraw if they said something that was a bit too rude.
Machiavelli wrote at a time when the concept of freedom of speech had never been heard of (in Italy anyway), and his suggestion to the ruler was that of course, if anyone could tell you the truth, you wouldn’t have their respect, but you should be “a great asker,” and a “patient hearer of the truth” about anything you had enquired about. That seems to me to be groping towards the concept of freedom of speech.
I don’t know if you chaps have heard of the “Overton Window.” There are always things that are considered completely unacceptable.
