The September Advance Trade Balance in Goods Is Negative 134.9 Billion

The consensus was an improvement to negative 129.0 billion. I suggest 134.9 was an improvement.

Advance Goods Data

• The international trade deficit was $134.9 billion in September, up $2.8 billion from $132.1 billion in August.
• Exports of goods for September were $209.2 billion, $5.3 billion more than August exports.
• Imports of goods for September were $344.1 billion, $8.1 billion more than August imports

The Census Bureau Advance Indicators for September show the deficit increased by $2.8 billion.

But that compares advance data to previous advance data we now know is wrong. The Census Bureau says the actual goods deficit for August was 136.572 billion.

The advance data was a bit better at -134.904 billion, thus an improvement, not that it was realistically any good.

The Econoday consensus was an improvement to $129.0 billion, a substantial miss. One silly soul predicted -88.0 billion. I wonder where that came from.

Biggest Trade Deficit In History

Excluding the enormous trade distortions caused by Trump’s tariffs, we have the largest trade deficit in history.

First, there was a surge of front-running imports and a peak deficit of 159 billion (yellow highlight). Then we had an artificial improvement (green highlight) accompanied by inventory drawdowns.

Now things are back to where they would be without the distortions.

Q: Where is that?
A: Record deficits despite the now obviously ridiculous idea that tariffs would change anything.

We still have tariff distortion and higher prices as a result.

Trump also drove Canada closer to China, losing the best trade partner in the process. Meanwhile, businesses suffer from higher prices and the trade deficit is still going up.
