The Trump White House Has No Editor, Just Spin Doctors

J. Bradford DeLong has an excellent article on Rudderless America. Let’s discuss.

No Policies to Believe In

Kudos to DeLong for his excellent article on Rudderless America

It should be obvious by now that the second Trump administration has no policies, nor even any policymaking processes. All that matters are the “instincts” of one ignorant man, and the eagerness of those around him to put their own interests ahead of the fate of the country.

As Bloomberg’s Chris Anstey explains, Bessent has a “grand encirclement” plan, and if this “sounds familiar, that’s because… [t]he Obama administration’s big trade idea was using the Trans-Pacific Partnership to assemble a coalition of Pacific Rim nations that would increasingly be tied to the US, and not drift into China’s orbit.”

The problem is that resurrecting Obama’s strategy is probably no longer possible. The TPP now exists as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, none of whose members will regard Trump as a credible or trustworthy negotiating partner. Bessent wants to work with “Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and India,” but while these countries will play nice, none would be so foolish as to concede anything meaningful to Trump. Mexico and Canada went down that path during his first term, when they agreed to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement, and now they find themselves among the first countries Trump targeted for renewed bullying.

Moreover, Bessent is obviously either deluded or lying when he suggests that he is reflecting the administration’s view. No one has a mandate to speak for Trump, whose decision-making changes minute to minute on the basis of “instincts” and whatever happens to be showing on his TV. Trump may instinctively agree to a policy proposal by Bessent, but if the next person he sees tells him no, Bessent may be left to explain why he cannot deliver what he promised. Such is life at the court of the mad king.

Former US Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence H. Summers sees it differently. “The sole preoccupation that I would have if I were in the government would be with what the president was saying. … The president is entitled to have advisors who believe in his policies…. Individuals are entitled to follow their conscience.”

But this is “sanewashing.” As Summers knows, there are no policies to believe in. Policies embody clear goals, not to mention staff work, modeling, and analysis of various scenarios that may arise in their pursuit. What we have here is one ignorant man, surrounded by sycophants, wandering around spouting bullshit as the cameras roll.

This is business as usual for Trump, who is just playing the role he filled on the set of The Apprentice. The difference is that The Apprentice had highly capable producers and editors who could render all the messy raw footage into a compelling, clean final product. The current White House has only a live feed.

The Trump White House has no editor, only spin doctors. Trump will say something, and some adviser will rush to declare, “See! This was always the plan!” But these courtiers are not on the same page themselves. Sometimes, economic adviser Peter Navarro seems to have the upper hand; sometimes, Elon Musk does; and sometimes one detects the influence of Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Stephen Miran of the Council of Economic Advisers, or Kevin Hassett of the National Economic Council. But these factions agree on very little, and Trump ultimately trusts none of them anyway.

My own vote for domestic-policy regent would go to Bessent, not because I think he would do well in the job, but because he might do less harm than anyone else who is actually willing to work for such a man. But none of this is going to happen. And that is why America and the world are in serious trouble.

An Honest Assessment

A reader on my blog this morning said I should give trump a break.

I replied “I didn’t give idiotic policies a break under Biden and I won’t now.
Here you get an honest assessment.

Other than participation in the cult, I would find it difficult to believe that people could actually believe the convoluted and contradictory policy goals of this president.

On April 9, when Trump Capitulates with a 90-Day Pause on Tariffs with the stock and bond market plunging, I commented “Trump has had enough of the stock market decline.”

What we did not know at the time was Bessent’s role in this pause.

Later that day, Bessent bragged “Trump Goaded China into a Bad Position”.

I called it the lie of the day, now revealed as such.

The lies are endless. Here’s a real hoot: Trump Says “Car Companies Will Be Thrilled With Tariffs”

The word of the hour is “thrilled” by 25 percent tariffs on autos starting April 2.

This morning I noted How the Tariff Pause Happened – Navarro Was Purposely Out of the Room

The Trump studied reciprocal tariffs for a month, concocted a wild-ass formula that had nothing to do with tariffs at all, then backed down when the stock and bond market puked.

Why should anyone give these idiotic policies a chance?

But to the true believers, this is 5D chess.

How the 5D Plan Works

  • Collect taxes from US consumers via massive increases in tariffs. Claim they will fund tax cuts, bring jobs back, and balance the budget, not noting the contradictions.
  • Goad China into a response.
  • Explain this was part of the master plan.

Bessent is bragging that over 50 countries want to negotiate. Well la de da. Of course they do, but in practice it’s impossible because of Trump’s idiotic definition of reciprocal.

Lutnick Says Tariffs Can Eliminate the IRS and Balance the Budget

On March 12, I commented Lutnick Says Tariffs Can Eliminate the IRS and Balance the Budget

We have an annual trade deficit of $918 billion.

Team Trump proposes $918 billion in “reciprocal tariffs” to make the trade deficit go away.

But to balance the budget and eliminate personal income taxes, Trump would need to collect $7 trillion in tariffs on a net trade deficit of $918 billion.

I would love to hear a detailed explanation of exactly how that works.

Are you ready for that miracle? Me too. But wait, there are still more benefits to this amazing deal.

Trumps Claims

  1. Tariffs will increase revenue enough to balance the budget
  2. Tariffs will bring manufacturing back to the US
  3. Tariffs will reduce inflation
  4. Tariffs will increase exports

Conflicting Economic Madness

Points 1 and 2 conflict. Tariffs cannot simultaneously bring back manufacturing and raise enough revenue to balance the budget.

Points 2 and 3 conflict. Since the US is one of the world’s highest cost producer of goods thanks to unions, tariffs will not reduce inflation.

Points 2 and 4 conflict. Since the US is one of the world’s highest cost producer of goods, and other countries will retaliate, tariffs will not increase exports.

No one yet can fully explain Trump’s economic plan because it’s all double- or triple- counting of contradictory ideas.

On April 8, I noted Musk Calls Trump’s Trade Advisor a “Moron Who’s Dumber than a Sack of Bricks”

Former Trump Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney sides with Musk regarding Trump advisor Peter Navarro:

“I would have fired [Navarro] a long time ago. I would have fired him when he got caught making up his academic sources for his papers, with his Ron Vara imaginary friend.”

Musk sure got that one right.

Rand Paul on Trade

Senator Rand Paul gave a interview regarding trade with Kudlow.

Here’s a link to Rand Paul with Kudlow. Please play the video.

Paul: “We get a reduction in trade deficits when we go into recession. … a 50 percent tax on shoes from Vietnam. You think we going to make shoes in the US? It’s also not a bad thing shoes are not made here. Adam Smith talked about the division of labor. A fundamental aspect of capitalism is the division of labor and trade. Something so fundamental, you shouldn’t try to stop.”

Kudlow challenged Paul on “fair trade”. Paul responded beautifully.

Just play it.

The Fundamental Problem

The fundamental problem is there are no restrictions on deficit spending or trade imbalances.

Nixon started this in 1971 when he ended gold convertibility.

Prior to that, if nations spent too much and deficits soared interest rates would have to go up to stop the gold outflow or the deficit would have to drop.

Nixon’s treasury secretary John Connally famously told a group of European finance ministers worried about the export of American inflation that the  “dollar is our currency, but your problem.”

Balance of trade issues, soaring debt, declining real wages, and the demise of the US middle class are now our problem.

Prior to Nixon closing the gold window, Imbalances were self-correcting. There is no control on spending now. Tariffs will not and cannot fix this problem.

Reciprocal tariffs won’t come close to paying for all of the things Trump wants. Expect fiscal deficits to rise dramatically.

“Since the US is one of the world’s highest cost producer of goods thanks to unions, tariffs will not reduce inflation.”
I disagree. Paying a fair wage and decent benefits may cause a slightly higher cost of goods but American corporations saw the lack of workplace safety rules and lack of environmental protections much to their liking and profit line so they moved thousands of factories overseas. American corporations have no loyalty to the nation, it’s citizens or even their own shareholders.

Between the capital investment required for new factories and the much higher wage demanded by US workers, we’d be looking at much higher price of goods, not “slightly higher”.

Speaking of repeating mistakes Nixon made… It is plainly obvious Donald Trump is trying to turn Jerome Powell into Arthur Burns part deux.

The level of stupidity and self-harm this administration is exhibiting is simply staggering.

Regarding the travel aspect of this excellent post. I have cancelled all of the shows and events I was taking my classic Porsches to this year. The ultra right TDS II haters have threatened me with violence. “If I see you, I will shoot you in the face” spouted to me by one of the MAGA faithful.

Additionally, I am contemplating cancellation of a trip through the south of France and down the western coast of Italy.

Elections have consequences!

Trump disaster 2 is expanding quickly and he has surrounded himself with sycophants. These are not leaders of the free world, they are destroyers of all that we hold dear to our hearts. America is failing in the wide open eyes of the world and trumps insane attacks on anything that threatens his fragile ego will not cease.

Thanks Mish for keeping it real and being an equal opportunity critic…

It’s a shame Senator Paul pretends x amount of “wealth” was lost through stocks, and that it’s due to tariffs.

Stock markets were going to tank no matter what. Much of that “wealth” was debt, rank speculation and fraud.

What’s the total if balancing historically overvalued stocks dropping a few ticks vs margin debt erased, short sellers making a killing, and gold skyrocketing?

Wealth was transferred to those much more deserving, who provided liquidity and responsibly held undervalued positions. If nothing else, markets are being made sane again. Long overdue.

A candidate who had a slightly annoying laugh; green policies that had marginal real impact on GDP (but aligned the US with the rest of the world); the right to put tampons in boys’ toilets (which may or may not have ever actually happened). Really so bad?

With inequality rising – it is going to be easier for people to use these culture war issues to win elections. The unintended consequence of the 1st amendment seems to be that he with the biggest wallet and most extreme anti-minority views can win elections. Some tweaking needed – a good start would be to get rid of PACS; ensure impartiality of “news” channels and penalise social media companies that don’t attack bots and fake IDs.

I remember watching this Mighty Planes episode on Discovery Channel, it’s a Canadian production so it might not have been on Discovery US. Anyways it’s from 2013 and it’s about Donald Trumps plane. What I found interesting was sort of the insight into Donald Trumps character. He’s super picky about what would be irrelevant details to most people and his Staff are well aware of his demanding standards. It makes me wonder if he would actually take advice from those around him or more likely he would surround himself with agreeable Yes Men.

A co-worker of mine is American and during the Republican Primaries and myself as a Conservative, I asked him why Trump again? Why did he come back, why not just go away like all former Presidents? My thought was why would you want someone that is so devicisive, so unpredictable back in the White House? But my co-worker like many other Americans didn’t seem to mind the unpredictable chaos.

The sad part is the Democrat party has gone Bat Sh.t Crazy with their DEI, their Wide open border policy and all of the other idiotic stuff they promote which probably made Trump look comparitively a little more stable than what he is.

Trump is predicting a trade deal with both Europe and China within the next few weeks. Though neither Europe nor China will confirm that they are even negotiating with the US yet.

At the same time Trump is suggesting that other countries should partner with the US and gang up on China. Even while
he threatens those countries with tariffs.

Meanwhile , China is threatening to retaliate against any countries that try to work with the US to isolate China.

The question is why any country would trust anything Trump says, and why any country would sign a trade agreement with him. They can see that Trump signed trade agreements with Mexico and Canada. And yet they were the first two countries that he attacked with his trade war.

There is little reason to bother negotiating with Trump. And if you do negotiate, there is no reason to trust anything he will sign. His word means nothing.

The US travel and tourism industry employs 1 million Americans and contributes $2 trillion to the US economy. It also runs a trade surplus of $60 billion with the rest of the world.

This trade surplus is in jeopardy now as significant numbers of travellers from all over the world are choosing to avoid coming to the US. Why? Because Trump’s insults and tariffs are turning off foreigners. In addition to avoiding the purchase of anything Made in America, they are also avoiding travel to America.

It will be interesting to see the tourism numbers as the year progresses.

Sure the tariffs will pay for everything, just like before 1913. The only problem was rich people didn’t pay very much. So they created income tax to make the rich pay more into US coffers and then reduced the tariffs and encouraged free trade. Of course the ultra rich have found ways to still pay less income tax thanks to buying politicians who create convenient loopholes.

While we’re on the subject of Trump…

I was not happy with everything Trump did during his first term, but I was never an ‘anti-Trumper’ and I was opposed to the unfair persecution of him.

I have absolutely turned against him now. Musk’s involvement in his new term was the trigger for me. I am at odds with just about everything Trump has done since he took office. The few positives are far outweighed by the negatives.

As time goes on, it’s pretty certain a lot of actual pro-Trumpers will also turn against him. Three main things will trigger this:

He’s actually going to cause higher inflation and higher deficits. The opposite of what people were hoping or expecting.

He’s going to be a war president, not a president for peace like a lot of true believers thought. (War with Iran is a certainty and we’ll see how his anti-foreign involvement base feels about that.)

His trampling of the constitution will be become too egregious to ignore. The Abrego-Garcia case should set off alarm bells.

If your going to point fingers you should probably also point them at the local and state police who put Abrego in the Gang database that is shared with Homeland security. plus the two judges that ruled he was a gang member. it was unfortunate for Trump that Homeland security picked Abrego out of the database as it turned into a PR mess.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c1k4072e3nno.amp

But the judge who presided over his 2019 case said that based on the confidential information, there was sufficient evidence to support Mr Abrego Garcia’s gang membership. That finding was later upheld by another judge.

In theory that is what people think but in reality it is not the case. Since 911, there has been many changes and executive orders. The ACLU sued the Obama Administration many times on some deportation’s practices.

Anyway….For now it is best not to get on the gang database.

2O15 Article from the ACLU website:
Our immigration laws, on paper, guarantee a fair process for asylum seeking individuals. People seeking asylum are entitled to a full asylum hearing as long as they can establish, during an initial interview with an asylum officer, a “credible fear” of persecution in their home countries.

Since last summer, the ACLU has filed six other cases on behalf of Central American refugees fleeing extreme sexual violence and death threats to seek asylum in the United States, only to be detained, determined to have no credible fear, and put into deportation proceedings. In every case, the Obama administration has argued that it can deport asylum-seekers without any oversight or review from the federal courts.

Came here as a 16 year old, and he’s now 29. Zero arrests. i have never heard of a 29 year old gang member with zero arrests. Anytime you hear of one arrested, you learn this is like their 27th arrest, and they’re like 19 years old. No arrest record here, and no arrest record in El Salvador either. it’s completely non credible that a supposed 29 year old gang member (they recruit them as teenagers) has never had an arrest in his country of origin, or the U.S.

The deficit problem is quite large. And one wonders when it leads to some kind of sovereign debt crisis

But there are hundreds of issues with each politician

And each person will value each of the hundred differently

For me free speech was the most important issue followed by energy policy/ the green scam

Trump has largely delivered on stopping the Censorship Industrial Complex, which kills any notion of democracy had it been left in place

And on energy we have a hiatus in the NetZero genocide

On the economy? Well it is still too early to tell but the chaos is likely to have effects that were not predicted by anyone

In any event, it is better to have a President that is likely not controlled by the Intel Community, which would almost certainly have resulted in nuclear armageddon right about now, than someone like Biden who was a CIA puppet or Kamala who would have been nothing but an empty suit filled by the CIA

Back in the 80s when I was in the army, if you crossed any European country’s borders, you’d either get arrested by border police or get shot by the army. The population thought this was the normal, sane approach. Fast forward 40 years, and now people think it’s perfectly normal to enter a country illegally, live on taxpayer’s money for a few years and let the journalists decide on your status. Much of the population now thinks that this is the normal, sane approach. Brainwashing 101.
PS. Karl Marx was against immigrants, because they diminish the negotiating powers of the working class. Tell that to the American cosplaying socialists.
PS2. “Woke” has its origins in the USSR’s Lysenkoism which failed over there. Basically “force nature to comply with the Party’s ideology”.

Ssshhhh. You can say anything you want just don’t speak bad of Trump or his puppet masters. Replacing censorship of the left with censorship of the right is not progress.

He does have a lot of male friends and the new haircut and gold necklace shows he is open to new lifestyles. Not sure if he pitches or catches.

A gleeful sociopath, doing his experiments like a little kid torturing insects. And the insects line up and take it, so in a sense that proves him right. And he seems to like martial arts, or at least a faux kind. Not sure how that translates to his balling style.

I think you miss the point

The expansive government censorship complex detailed by many like Taibbi and others is being dismantled.

Under Kamala it would have been strnegthened to the point it would have killed all democracy by the end of this term

I do have a problem with the right seeking to make anti israel or anti zionist speech illegal. You give up the moral high ground by doing so and it is ludicrous as such speech is in no way anti-semitic, and even if it were would be legal

But it is not even a pale shadow of the censorship under Biden which would have continued under Kamala and gotten worse to the point we would look more like the UK or Germany who are jailing people for speech
