Further to the above, why are we still fussing over this aspect of the thing when the question of what the secret police were doing is far more important (at least as I see it)? Around the 1840’s, there was open debate at the federal level about how much we should conquer (or otherwise engage with) the nations and peoples south of us. Some members of Congress warned that this would become a quagmire, mixing too much, with too many of those brown people, who were thought to be inherently ungovernable, or unassimilable. This figured into the location of the US-Mexico border: consciously set not to scoop up too many ethnic Hispanics.
