But imagine, Canada is building a massive bridge between Ontario and Michigan. They own both the Canada and the United States side and, of course, built it with virtually no U.S. content. President Barack Hussein Obama stupidly gave them a waiver so they could get around the BUY AMERICAN Act, and not use any American products, including our Steel. Now, the Canadian Government expects me, as President of the United States, to PERMIT them to just “take advantage of America!” What does the United States of America get — Absolutely NOTHING! Ontario won’t even put U.S. spirits, beverages, and other alcoholic products, on their shelves, they are absolutely prohibited from doing so and now, on top of everything else, Prime Minister Carney wants to make a deal with China — which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the leftovers! I don’t think so. The first thing China will do is terminate ALL Ice Hockey being played in Canada, and permanently eliminate The Stanley Cup. The Tariffs Canada charges us for our Dairy products have, for many years, been unacceptable, putting our Farmers at great financial risk. I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve. We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset. The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA), a Canadian Crown corporation, is managing the project, with costs to be recovered through tolls.

When completed, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will be a six-lane crossing of the Detroit River connecting the City of Detroit with Windsor, Ontario. The 1.5-mile crossing will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, with a main span of just over a half-mile. The bridge will also feature a nearly 12-foot-wide pedestrian/cycling path. The project also includes building new ports of entry, as well as onward connections to I-75 in southwest Detroit.
The new Canadian port of entry will be built on a 130-acre site and will be the largest Canadian port on the U.S.-Canadian border. It will include inbound border inspection facilities for both passenger and commercial vehicles, outbound inspection facilities, toll collection facilities, a maintenance facility, and parking. The U.S. port of entry will be developed on a 167-acre site and will be one of the largest border facilities in North America. It will include inbound border inspection facilities for both passenger and commercial vehicles, together with outbound inspection facilities, commercial exit control booths, and parking.
The Michigan interchange with I-75 will include connecting ramps to and from the U.S. port of entry and associated local road improvements. To accommodate the new ramps to the port of entry, modifications will be required along nearly two miles of I-75. They will include over a dozen roadway and pedestrian bridges ranging in length from 100 to 1,700 feet.
The Gordie Howe International Bridge is being developed by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA), a not-for-profit Crown corporation created in 2012 that reports to the Canadian Parliament through the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. WDBA is wholly owned by the Government of Canada but is structured like a private company and operates independently from the government. WDBA is responsible for the delivery of the bridge, as well as construction oversight and the operation of the new crossing. WDBA will set toll rates on the bridge and collect all tolls.
The bridge is being implemented through a 36-year design-build-finance-operate-maintain availability payment concession. WDBA’s payments to the private sector concessionaire, Bridging North America, are performance-based and can be withheld by WDBA if the performance standards are not met. It is anticipated that of the $4.4 billion contract, $2.9 billion will be allocated for the design-build phase (including financing), and the remaining $1.5 billion will be allocated for the operations-maintenance-rehabilitation phase (including financing).
The project aims to improve trade between Canada and the United States, and it operates as a major public-private partnership aimed at improving one of the busiest border crossings.

The billionaire owner of a bridge connecting Michigan with Canada met Howard Lutnick, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, on Monday hours before President Trump lambasted a competing span, in the latest flashpoint in the deteriorating relationship between the United States and Canada.
Matthew Moroun is a Detroit-based trucking magnate whose family has operated the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, for decades. He met on Monday with Mr. Lutnick in Washington, according to two officials briefed on the meeting who requested anonymity to discuss a private conversation.
After that meeting Mr. Lutnick spoke with Mr. Trump by phone about the matter, the officials said.
Shortly afterward, Mr. Trump threatened to block the planned opening of a new bridge between Detroit and Windsor, which would take away toll revenue from Mr. Moroun’s crossing, if Canadian officials did not address a long list of grievances.
The Moroun family has for decades mounted legal challenges to block or delay the competing project, known as Gordie Howe International Bridge. One of the challenges reached the Canadian Supreme Court, while the family has also lobbied extensively against it.
A spokesman for the Commerce Department declined to comment on the meeting with Mr. Lutnick. A representative for Mr. Moroun’s company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The new bridge was fully paid for by Canada but is owned in part by Michigan, and is expected to ease congestion in the busiest trade corridor between the United States and Canada.
Mr. Trump’s latest salvo comes at a particularly fraught moment in the relationship between the two allies and top trading partners. Since Mr. Trump’s election, he has menaced Canada, questioning its sovereignty and leveling tariffs on some of its key industries including steel, lumber and automobiles.
The two countries — along with Mexico — are expected to review their comprehensive, longstanding free-trade agreement this year. Those talks are expected to be strained given Mr. Trump’s punishing use of tariffs.
“The fact that Canada will control what crosses the Gordie Howe bridge, and owns the land on both sides, is unacceptable to the president,” Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, told reporters on Tuesday. “It’s also unacceptable that more of this bridge isn’t being built with more American-made materials.”
She added: “This is just another example of President Trump putting America’s interest first.”
In a rambling social media post on Monday evening, Mr. Trump threatened to stop the bridge from its scheduled opening later this year, saying that he wants to punish Canada for exploiting the United States and for reviving its trade relationship with China, among other purported transgressions.
It was not immediately clear how Mr. Trump would block the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge, which remains under construction.
The new crossing, which cost $4.7 billion, was paid for by Canada and is to be operated jointly by Canada and Michigan under a public-private arrangement.
The Moroun family had previously called on Mr. Trump to halt the construction of bridge — which, once opened, would compete with the Ambassador Bridge for the more than $300 million in daily cross-border trade.
Mr. Trump on Monday suggested in a post that the United States might seek to acquire “at least one half” of the new bridge and take a cut of the tolls.
In his first term, Mr. Trump had promoted the Gordie Howe Bridge in a joint statement with Canadian officials as a symbol of the countries’ deep ties and as “a vital economic link between our two countries.”
Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada said he had a call with Mr. Trump on Tuesday and explained that Canada paid for the bridge, though it will share ownership with Michigan.
“This is a great example of cooperation between our countries,” Mr. Carney told reporters. “I look forward to it opening.”
Canada is Michigan’s largest export market and Democrats assailed Mr. Trump’s bombast.
“The billionaires scored again,” Representative Debbie Dingell, Democrat of Michigan, said in an interview. “Donald Trump won Michigan. Why is he going to screw the working people who voted for him?”
Mr. Trump and Mr. Carney had enjoyed a stable, amicable relationship despite the lack of progress in the two nations’ trade relationship. But that changed after Mr. Carney delivered a high-profile speech last month at the World Economic Forum in Davos that irked Mr. Trump.
Mr. Carney described the end of the U.S.-led world order as an irreversible “rupture,” and called on middle powers such as Canada to band together in order to defend their interests and survive the turmoil that has come with Mr. Trump’s second term. Despite not once mentioning Mr. Trump or the United States by name, the speech was widely interpreted as a rebuke of the U.S. president.
Mr. Trump reacted sharply.
“Canada gets a lot of freebies from us,” Mr. Trump said the day after Mr. Carney’s speech in Davos. “By the way, they should be grateful also, but they’re not.”

Wishful thinking, but you have to consider the reality of the day. Canada’s largest trading partner is the United States of America. They can’t turn everything off without an immediate depression and everybody knows that.
This is why Trump is desperately pushing for concessions as quickly as he can. Meanwhile, Canada is doing everything they can to reroute their trade away from the United States.

Actually – the economics of the matter are pretty clear. I can’t name one bilateral winner who *needs* the USA. I take that back: Mexico and Canada, admittedly, are stuck on the backside orifice of the US bear’s butt.
If the EU would buy energy from Russia then both win (so does Ukraine because it plays both sides of winning teams). If South America just pivoted to China both win. The Middle East, Africa, and Oceania all win by trading with other peaceful blocs in stark preference to the US. The US no longer provides reliable security, arbitration, materials, funding or market access. And usually both parties will honor a deal, because a reputation for reneging on deals hurts in the future as trust is expensive to re-establish. So why would Canada agree to being extorted? I just watched a US aircraft parts company pull up more than 70% of their manufacturing employees and move them to Canada where they have expanded their business to include Airbus.

We both need each other. After hundreds of years of trade, our two economies are so integrated that any kind of disruption hurts us both.
The US already has a big advantage over Canada in many ways. They export mostly raw materials to us, which we process into finished goods, and export back to them.
To put tariffs on the raw materials that we “must” import only hurts our manufacturers. We need their oil, aluminum, lumber, potash etc. because we simply cannot produce enough of these thing ourselves.
Correct, we added value to those raw materials and that added margin and profits.
Now Canadians are re-investing in new plants and technologies to bring those margins and profits home.
The trade relationship with Canada was far better for America before Trump (the criminal pederast) threatened them and started extorting them.
Consider the options that Canada has.
They can do trade with somebody who’s conveniently located but highly erratic, unstable, and very unpredictable. It’s difficult to set up a business contract when you have to kowtow an inconsistent administration.
Or….
They can approach 193 other countries to develop trade. Maybe not all 193 countries will be more stable than the USA but the majority will be.
Even if it’s only 100 countries, Canada has an obvious choice. We will lose trade with Canada.
I expect the same with Mexico.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be the same with most countries.
This is the acceleration towards the end of the American empire. How we proceed from here will determine our global position for the next century. If we continue on Trump’s route, I expect it to go poorly.

If he pardons her, her right not to answer because of the risk of self-incrimination goes away. Congress can haul her in for hearings where she is under oath and ask her every question about Trump they can think of, with the risk of perjury if she is caught lying. Why would Trump take the chance she squeals about what he did with Epstein?
