Trump’s Head-Spinning Iran Reversals and Explanations “We Did the World a Favor”

Imagine Biden started a war and said something like that.

Head-Spinning Reversals

The Wall Street Journal discusses President Trump’s Head-Spinning Pivot on an Emergency Oil Release

In a rapid reversal that left U.S. allies stunned, the Trump administration shifted from opposing the largest-ever intervention in oil markets to cajoling allies into moving forward with the maneuver in a matter of hours.

Tensions in the global oil market seemed to be easing on Tuesday just as Western governments and their allies were debating a major release of emergency oil reserves to calm prices. President Trump said the war with Iran would be over soon, and some European nations were questioning whether governments should intervene at all, U.S. and European officials familiar with the discussion said.

According to the officials, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright gave his counterparts in the Group of Seven nations the White House’s position Tuesday morning: A massive intervention in oil markets was premature because the price of oil had recently dipped below $90 a barrel.

Less than two hours later, U.S. officials reversed their earlier position and pushed their counterparts for a major release of oil, said people familiar with the matter. The 180 degree turn was entirely due to a change of heart by President Trump, said a senior administration official.

Wright’s earlier stance reflected Trump’s views, according to the administration official. The president began the day opposed to release of oil, but changed his mind after advisers persuaded him that such a move was necessary to quell volatile oil prices, the official said. Trump told Wright to push for market intervention.

“It is 100 percent incorrect that Secretary Wright advocated against a release at the IEA meeting Tuesday,” an Energy Department spokesman said. “In fact, quite the opposite, he rallied the member nations to support President Trump’s plan.”

[These obvious lies make Trump look all the more ridiculous]

“President Trump previously stated that he would responsibly use the Strategic Petroleum Reserve at the right time, and that time is now,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Some IEA member states that initially opposed the move acquiesced to the Trump administration’s demands, shelving their concerns that a major intervention wouldn’t do much to lower prices while the strait remained closed.

[At best, it won’t do anything at all. And if reserves are wasted just to bring prices down it could backfire spectacularly.]

The whiplash reflects the volatility of the Trump administration’s decision-making as it prosecutes the war with Iran.

“The fundamental thing I’ve been shocked by is the lack of preparation for the energy-market consequences of this,” said Arnab Datta, managing director of policy implementation at Employ America, a Washington research group that has advocated for more aggressive use of strategic reserves. “There was nothing ready. Absolutely nothing.”

Still, skepticism abounds about whether the 400 million barrel release will be enough to keep prices below $100 a barrel. The size of the release accounts for only about 20 days of shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, officials say. Details on the plan remain scarce, and the pace of the release will dictate its effect on prices. The IEA said more details are forthcoming.

[20 days through the strait is the wrong way of looking at things. Oil is fungible. The global release is a mere 4 days. But OK they could and will release this slowly. The impact will be meaningless.]

“The rate at which IEA members can provide emergency barrels to the market cannot concurrently cover the loss of supply in the Middle East, even if the hostilities were to end soon,” said Hamad Hussain, an economist at Capital Economics in London.

[Correct]

The U.S. will supply the lion’s share of the release, more than 100 million of the 400 million barrels, according to people familiar with the matter. U.S. reserves could be less than half full if the Trump administration ends up releasing all of that onto the market, the lowest level since at least 2008. In his inaugural address, Trump pledged to fill the nation’s reserves “right to the top.”

[The US will release the most. This is despite the fact that US reserves are low.]

Some energy ministers worked through the night, consulting each other and seeking advice from leading energy experts. The chief executive of a major U.S. investment bank warned one European minister that firing the biggest bazooka so early in the war could backfire, signaling to markets that Trump was losing his nerve.

But governments quickly dropped their resistance to avoid a public show of discord that they feared would trigger even greater market volatility.

[It’s not a bazooka. It’s a kid’s cork gun. We are talking about 4-day’s worth of supply. In other word, meaningless.]

Germany’s energy minister Katherina Reiche appeared to offer arguments against the release even as she announced that Germany would take part in it.

“We are far from the $110 per barrel and the markets seem to be reacting positively,” Reiche told reporters Wednesday.

[Market’s reacting positively?! Brent is up $9 to $101 and US WTIC is up $9 to $96. If positive means up, that’s positive all right. And note that Brent and WTIC are moving nearly lockstep. That’s proof oil is mostly fungible (although there are grade requirement differences]

We Did the World a Favor

Who doesn’t like higher oil prices, higher diesel prices, higher fertilizer prices, higher food prices due to higher fertilizer prices and higher diesel prices, higher aluminum prices, higher bond yields, and reduced chances of rate cuts by the Fed?

If higher prices across the board are not a favor, then what the hell is?

But that’s OK because, as Trump says higher prices are a “small price to pay“.

Fact Check True! (From the point of view of the Israeli lobby, Lindsey Graham, and Benjamin Netanyahu)

The War Is Over

“”We won. We won. In the first hour it was over.” The cult cheered.

Please step back and Imagine Biden did and said anything like this.

Right in the Middle of His Gaslighting, Guess What

Have We Discussed Fertilizer Yet?

But that’s OK because it’s all part of the “small price to pay”.

I am surprised that people like Arnab Datta make statements like “The fundamental thing I’ve been shocked by is the lack of preparation for the energy-market consequences of this.” The US and Israel have long been preparing for this war, often with help from allies. For example, at the UN security council, in August 2025 the E3 invoked the snapback provisions of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) even though the US had torn it up, providing a legal basis for the war. Then in Nov Israel agreed to a ceasee fire in Gaza, which allowed them to shift air and ground resources to the war in Iran and the invasion of Lebanon. Then in January 2026, Saudi Arabia increased oil production despite the consensus being that there was actually an oversupply of oil production projected for 2026. So the US and Israel have long been preparing for the various aspects of this war. But I think what caught the US and Israel by surprise was that the ability of 2026 Iran to fight back is substantially greater than the ability of 2003 Iraq. It isn’t that the US failed to prepare, but rather that the US intelligence just underestimated Iranian capabilities to cause disruption.

What is shocking is that US/Israel’s long term approach to Iran was a plan to repeatedly strike Iran every year or so, regardless of any negotiations underway. This was stated clearly to Senators.

This is an intolerable situation for Iran.

So, it is an existential war for Iran. It is a war of choice for US/Israel. It is clear that there can be no negotiating the end of this war because the proven value of talks to Iran is zero.

Who (anyone?) can guarantee the safety of Iran, if they were to negotiate again?

This, if anything, pushes Iran directly to nuclear weapons.

And the biggest damage that Iran can do right now is shut down the Gulf and continue the intermittent barrage. It doesn’t need to be much, a little for a long time has a big impact.

For the US/Israel to ignore the whole Strait issue (known for 50 years) is perhaps the biggest unforced error in military history.

Iran negotiated with the US and kept to the terms of the treaty signed by Obama and Iran,

Trump ignored and broke that treaty without justification. Only his typical and fickle ego boast that he could negotiate a better deal (he failed to do it).

Bottom line is that the entire world is on notice that Trump is full of shit and not trustworthy. Sadly the entire US is being cast in that light.

I think it is both. Trump didn’t expect that Iran would close the straight so they did not prepare for the level of oil shortfall that they ended up with. Iran has been doing the war thing for 5,000 years. It is in their blood. They do whatever it takes. Sure they will eventually lose but both sides are going to get wet in this pissing contest.

Trump is in panic mode. He expected instant capitulation, similar to Venezuela. Iran has shown that they can defy him and fight back in ways his simplistic mind set never anticipated.

Megalomania combined with profound ignorance ares about are the last characteristics one would want in a US President under stress. Trump is obviously overwhelmed. Expect him to lash out in unpredictable and likely destructive ways.

Maximum respect to Spain: Spain is the only Western nation that has strongly condemned the attacks. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said his nation will not be “complicit in something that is bad for the world simply out of fear of reprisals from someone.”

Spain permanently withdrew its ambassador to Israel on Tuesday as a diplomatic standoff worsened between the two countries over Spain’s opposition to the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran.

But it cannot be denied that Iran has been a thorn in the side of the world for decades. If they got a bomb they would certainly use it for terrible things.

Sure thing.

Israel has a right to exist. Since they were founded in 1948, they have been attacked non stop by Iran and its proxies.

They have defended themselves, given up territory, offered full self governance to the Palestinians multiple times in exchange for peace. Deals were accepted, land was given, and then they were attacked again.

Most recently the attacks on Gaza was Israel saying “enough” to attacks on their territory.

If any other country was constantly attacked by its neighbors the way Israel has been and is, they would respond exactly the same.

Until Iran and its proxies agree to let Israel go unmolested I do not blame Israel for its incursions into those same countries that ceaselessly attack them.

Can you name a single time Israel attacked it’s neighbors without it being attacked first? You cannot, because there has never been one.

Utter nonsense. Israel always attacks first. Like when they killed the Gaza negotiators multiple times, most recently the attack in Qatar. They attacked Syria when they were not attacked at all by them. They have attacked Iran numerous times in what they call “pre-emptive strikes”, which by definition means they were not attacked first. They did the same thing to Iraq when they decided they were building nuclear weapons. The list goes on and on, hundreds of times. You just have to read objective sources instead of Israeli spread propaganda to find out the truth.

Good points, all. After Assad fell (Israel admitted to helping Al-Jolani) and Al-Jolani declared he had no problem with Israel, Israel then set out to destroy all Syrian military assets in a truly unprovoked attack. They flew some 400 sorties in a brazenly illegal and immoral series of attacks.

The attacks against enemies discussing Israeli ceasefire proposals is one of the most cynical, bad faith characteristics of the last few years. Israel killed Haniyeh during ceasefire negotiations with Hamas, Nasrallah during another set of negotiations, the Doha attack you mentioned and bombed Iran twice during negotiations. There are other similar killings that I’m less familiar with. Israel exhibits dishonorable behavior that the world would not tolerate from any other country.

Poor Israel, those kids were in the way you see! They’ve never attacked anyone unprompted! Don’t mind the air strikes on other countries all the time because obliviously that’s to deal with terrorism the same way killing those kids was. They’d just grow up to be terrorists, you see. By the way, they now need a six bazillion dollar gift of bombs and if it’s not too much maybe a generation of Americans to die for them. That’s very reasonable I think, after all they have a right to exist (and do whatever the hell they please!)

is Iran currently bombing civilians off the shores of South America?

Israel attacked its neighbors on June 5, 1967 with out being attacked first.
Israel just attacked Iran during negotiations without being attacked first.

Since Mish didn’t like my longer response, I’ll simply ask:

  1. Can you tell me if Israel has ever “offered” Palestinians governance that allow them to a. control their skies, b. control the water in their ground, 3. the ability to engage in diplomacy/enter treaties with any country of their choosing, 4. the right to reject any foreign military on their soil? Absent these, can it be called “full sovereignty” as you claim?
  2. Why does Israel have any say whatsoever over Palestinian sovereignty? Do Palestinians have a right to decide anything about Israeli sovereignty?
  3. If Palestine recognized Israel in 1993, when did Israel recognize the state of Palestine?
  4. Was there ever a year where the number of Israeli settlers was lower than the figure a year earlier, since conquering the West Bank and Gaza in ’67?
  5. When did they give up the Golan Heights? Are they occupying any other Syrian territory?

Can you name a single time Israel attacked it’s neighbors without it being attacked first?”

1967? 1980? 2006? Syria right now?

Simply, pre-Israel attacked Palestine, politically as far back as 1888, then increasingly, militarily in the 1930s, culminating in the expulsion of some 750K people.

how has Israel been a thorn in the side of anyone other than terrorists? Iran created and backed several foreign armies that attacked Israel and did other evil shit, like kill 200,000 people for Assad.
we should let Israel fend for itself. it can handle it.

that was in 1982 Lebanese civil war and Israel was secondarily culpable: it didn’t stop a massacre by Christian Lebanese in a refugee camp it controlled.

it definitely deserves blame for that for sure, but it was not IDF that killed those people, it was Christian Lebanese killing other Lebanese in what was a civil war. Israel knew it would happen and easily could have stopped it.

but that was 44 years ago. Iran just murdered 30,000 of its own citizens. In Sabra and Shatila killed 1,000-3,500 were killed. Literally 1/10th of what Iran just did in the last 6 months. point isn’t Israel is pristine but to pretend equivalence between it and Iran is idiotic.

Iran has a policy of raping women protesters. it tortures and kills thousands of its citizens every year, year in and year out.. during the Syrian civil war it loaned out Hezbollah to kill for Assad, and Hezbollah killed some 150,000 muslims which is many times the number of muslims Israel has killed in all of its existence including the gaza war. this is just fairly recent history.

Repeating this nonsense about Iran being a threat to the US does not make it so. It is just a ridiculous statement having no relation to reality.

yes, and it could have been a thorn for another 50 years without any Americans being killed. do you think this will lead to some lasting peace and stability?

it’s not enough to say Iran regime is evil, you need to make sure what follows isn’t worse. as it is the likely outcome is regime is fully in place and the Iranian people are more impoverished and oppressed than ever, and Iran will rebuild.

The truly hilarious thing about that statement its that you have no idea why it was racist.

“that problem”

The black one.

lets try:

… I could also say the same about gigantic embezzlement and horrific crimes of the ultra wealthy in the US… don’t see any troops being deployed to take care of that problem

Black people may scare you, but they are not what’s robbing you blind and raping your kids.

Yes, the USA, by cutting off international funding for Iran, is 100% responsible for that impoverishment. The US and Israel, by continuously attacking Iran, destroying its infrastructure and manufacturing capacity, is 100% for that impoverishment. I can only wonder why the Iranian people would ever harbor ill will towards the US and Israel.
