Walz is more progressive than Harris and she needs to move to the middle. What Happened?
Harris Taps Tim Walz
The Wall Street Journal reports Harris Picks Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as Running Mate
Vice President Kamala Harris picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her vice-presidential running mate, selecting an avuncular Midwesterner and former high-school teacher who in recent years has signed into law policies popular with the Democratic base.
Walz wasn’t widely known outside of Minnesota before his name appeared on Harris shortlists. But he gained some Democratic fans outside his state in recent weeks for television interviews that hit at former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, without being overly nasty. He called the pair “weird,” a word that went viral among Democrats.
But Shapiro’s selection might have also angered some progressives because he has supported private-school vouchers and is a vocal supporter of Israel at a time when some activists on the left have condemned the Biden administration’s handling of the war in Gaza. Harris’s choice of Walz was earlier reported by CNN.
Trump’s campaign in a statement suggested the selection represented a doubling down on progressivism. “It’s no surprise that San Francisco Liberal Kamala Harris wants West Coast wannabe Tim Walz as her running-mate,” the statement said. “Walz has spent his governorship trying to reshape Minnesota in the image of the Golden State.”
Minnesota Republicans have suggested Walz was slow to call out the National Guard to address rioting that started after the Minneapolis police murder of George Floyd in 2020.
A Nice Choice?
Nate Silver says Tim Walz is a Minnesota Nice Choice.
Wikipedia defines “Minnesota Nice” — the property stereotypically associated with the home state of Kamala Harris’s new running mate, Gov. Tim Walz — as follows:
Minnesota nice is a cultural stereotype applied to the behavior of people from Minnesota, implying residents are unusually courteous, reserved, and mild-mannered compared to people from other states and more akin to their Canadian neighbors in Northern Ontario. The phrase also implies polite friendliness, an aversion to open confrontation, a tendency toward understatement, a disinclination to make a direct fuss or stand out, apparent emotional restraint, and self-deprecation. It is sometimes associated with passive-aggression.
Playwright and corporate communications consultant Syl Jones suggested that Minnesota nice is not so much about being “nice” but is more about keeping up appearances, maintaining the social order, and keeping people (including non-natives of the state) in their place.
This was a choice designed to maintain the social fabric of the Democratic Party, and avoid news cycles about a disappointed left and Democrats’ internal squabbling over the War in Gaza. Or at least, that’s what I think it was: we’ll need to learn more about Harris’s deliberation process. I’m not inclined to be too deferential to any political candidate, but it’s plausible that there were vetting issues with the runner-up, Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania. Harris certainly has more information about the internal feeling within the Democratic caucus than I do, or she may just have thought the chemistry of a Harris-Shapiro ticket wouldn’t work.
It’s a nice pick: Walz, a two-term governor and six-term U.S. Representative, is from the family of Tim Kaine-style VP choices: inoffensive, unlikely to cause any harm, “safe”. Although maybe that’s unfair: Walz is likely to be better on the stump than Kaine [Senator Tim Kaine from Virginia]. If you surveyed Democratic members of Congress, he’d probably be who they’d choose. But I believe he’s probably the wrong choice, a step back toward the Democratic Party’s instincts to triangulate instead of the boldness the Harris campaign has displayed so far.
Harris Swings Left or Does She?
Silver thinks Walz is a nice choice but “Shapiro was the higher-upside option that was probably worth the risk.“
I don’t know enough other than to say Shapiro has some issues with the Progressive Left. Was there anything else in the closet?
Perhaps the choice was to avoid riots in Chicago over Palestinian issues. But Walz will have some issues with with the middle.
For example, The Journal noted Walz supported universal free school meals for students, voting rights for the formerly incarcerated, driver’s licenses for migrants who crossed the border illegally, recreational marijuana and signed a law that made abortion a “fundamental right.”
Harris has tried to move to the middle (or at least claims to).
She now supports fracking of all things. This is why: Pennsylvania is the second biggest producer of natural gas after Texas.
I pointed out the natural gas issue with Pennsylvania many months ago, and said that the issue could easily cost Biden the state.
So now? Harris says she supports fracking. Does anyone believe her, especially with her tapping Walz?
Suboptimal Choices
Trump and Harris likely made suboptimal choices.
Trump did for sure. Vance was an outright bad pick that only MAGA supporters could love.
Both Trump and Harris needed to pick up swing voters.
Harris went with the Progressive core (possibly for reasons we don’t know) and Trump went with Vance for reasons we do know.
Trump looked in a mirror and saw Vance.
Thank You!
A Word About Polls
I suspect Harris is currently ahead, but we will not really know until a week to ten days after the Democratic National Convention. Too much overexcitement is baked in current polls.
Harris is the official nominee, so there’s plenty of time to prepare for a big party. And might I suggest it will be a bigger, better party than the Republican threw?
Trump droned on forever and ever amen. By the time he finished his acceptance speech, most people were in bed.
On August 4, I commented Due to Extreme FIMD, Trump is Now Behind, He May Need a Hard Recession to Win
I have a follow-up to that idea later this week. A recession is my base case.
So let’s see. Meanwhile, don’t be surprised if Trump slips further behind. We are in a momentum phase and need to discount some of that momentum. It’s likely to influence polls but may not stick once a discussion of issues comes into play.
Trump can easily go after the Progressive record of Kamala, especially with her pick of Walz.
This race will change if Trump can keep his foot out of his mouth and just stick to the issues. That’s the both the opportunity, and the problem.

Kamala has no international political or world affairs experience. Does Walz?
Waltz seems like a decent guy. I like his real-world experience, serving in the military and working in manufacturing. Much like Vance, you can’t say he was a coddled elitist rising on his advantages. All that said, I won’t vote his way because I don’t like progressive politics. I’ll hold my nose given the stench of voting for Trump.
I think if Trump had picked Tulsi Gabbard, that curveball would have really messed up the Democrats.
Trump went with Vance to show he was serious about changing the Track US is set upon.
If he went with Gabbard the whole MAGA movement would have ended with his second term.
If people have had enough of Washington DC Garbage and really want to return the US to its founding principles then they have the option to do that with Trump.
People can now make the stark choice of Paths laid out in front of them.
If electorate want a Constitutional Republic with a “Fiercely independent Judiciary” then choose Trump.
If electorate want Progressive Socialism and the Judiciary as just another part of the UniParty, then put the marker on Harris and the Gym teacher.
Unless a person happen to be not able to decide your own Future and want to be told how to live then vote for status Quo remaining in Congress.
Add: Consider this if people lose the “Fiercely independent Judiciary” because it gets watered down as is being proposed, what is to keep your Bill of Rights enshrined in the US Constitution from being reinterpreted by a political party?
VPs are picked to satisfy a swath of platform needs. Simplifying the decision to one reason can’t possibly be the calculus here.
Does he appeal to the party base? Does he appeal to swing voters and Undecideds? Does he appeal to the donor class and party elites? Does he appeal to demographics the POTUS nominee doesn’t? Can he lock up the swing states?
Is he “Deep State” “Washington Consensus” approved? Can he campaign across all demographics and hustle for campaign cash? Did he have a lot of power behind the scenes? Is he a shapeshifter that can change positions quickly as circumstances dictate?
Is he articulate and versed on the issues? Can he exhibit folksiness, policy wonk, statesman, be hip, proven consensus builder, reach-across-the-aisle chops?
Can the elites call in favors because he’s in their pocket? Does he have an executive pedigree with a solid record of decision making?
The left must have thought this person checked enough of these boxes and probably many more….
It’s a terrible choice for VP, but they haven’t got any good choices..
Look at the list of democrat VPs..
When was the last good one?! Maybe someone after WW2?
Look who they chose for the big “P” Did you think that would garner a good pick for a “VP”
They went from a puppet at P and a do nothing, word salad, border disaster VP , to a do nothing, word salad, disaster at the border P and a Biden 2.0 puppet at VP.
Talk about Disaster as a game plan… this was possibly the worst two choices they could have made. They got worse at the position of President, and that was quite the accomplishment, let me just say. They got even worse at the position of VP, as they picked a Biden Clone, I guess they wanted the Voters to replace what they had at VP, and what they are equally looking to install as the President…
Things that make you go hmm…
It’s simple. The reason is no one else was willing to play second fiddle to Harris on a losing ticket.
Only someone more brainless and more woke could fit the bill without upstaging her, hence the bottom of the barrel has been thoroughly scraped.
Which is exactly why Harris will be out of Politics before the election, and certainly will not be the Nominee. They might as well hand the prize to the Republicans, if she is, and with that VP pick whew… Talk about throwing in the towel!!!
Loving the delusional comments by those here who kneel to Trump. They reek of desperation. Trump will soon be in court again as multiple cases resume in August and September. Get your popcorn ready Trump-bitchez.
I agree, the delusional comments by those here who kneel to ANY Party Leader is simply astonishing to me! They reek of total desperation. I am not sure now if Trump or Biden goes to Court First. Hell, Hunters already there, so that’s complicating things for Biden, Trump and Kamala…
Politics is a race to the bottom.
Then why are the Politicians Always On Top?
They are at the top of the bottom!
Recognising that Harris and Walz are extremist morons does not mean that you support Trump. Are you so delusional that you can seriously endorse such atrocious Democrat candidates?! Even an imbecile like you must crave more credible candidates than Harris and Walz.
Out of 330m people, is this the best you’ve got?! Really?!
The Dems could still get religion (or common sense) and make a change at the convention.
But they won’t do that. They are already too invested in the anointed choices.
There is a lot of media talk today about “joy” and “energy” from the Harris team. Unfortunately, that doesn’t lead to competency.
First off, I seriously doubt that Kamala had much say whatsoever with Walz as the VP Selection.
Second off, I actually think this was more of a pick for the (eventual) Presidential Nominee within their Own Party.
Let’s look at what he supposedly could bring. The Mid-West Vote? Perhaps, and more so than what they had maybe? The Teachers Unions Vote? Not sure on that, as times have changed a lot. The Biden Vote? Damn it if he’s not a clone. A Puppet that looks like an old frail Man? Slightly more together, balance is much better, and listening and hearing are far superior, so they would have that going for them.
It’s a “Trial Balloon” with plenty of time to do so!! They know two things for sure. One is that Kamala cannot possibly beat Trump. The other is that nobody else they have can either. Hunter, Joe’s Handlers, and The DR. Screwed it all up…
We don’t have A Clue, because They Don’t Yet Either… Some by design, as they await the Trial Results, but mostly because they really don’t have much of a choice IMHO…
Spent time in China and still speaks Mandarin. That should be bonus bucks in some corners.

Fei hua, shazi.
Growing up in the Midwest we always had a fat teacher or coach who was a total bastard.
Sure, but how many people were fooled into thinking he was a good guy? That’s how they get away with it Denny Hastert, Jerry Sandusky… Only later do people realize they’re ass-rapers.
Another nail in Trump’s coffin. His lawyer flipped on him on him in the fake electors case which is not good for his fate. Election fraud is a federal crime.
https://apnews.com/article/arizona-fake-electors-attorney-2020-presidential-election-2b45b3ff90725fd07dd6c4dc9bfe6f22
My prediction also is that the states where Trump has taken over the election boards like Georgia, will not certify the election unless he wins. This is merely another attempt at what he tried in 2020 with the fake electors. Good thing that multiple lawsuits have overturned what fake electors in Arizona tried to do in local and state elections and the state supreme court has prosecuted those involved. If you are an elector and showing up at Trump rallies, I think your fate is going to be similar.
TDS much? Lol.
Are you a TDS GPT bot?
Why ? Because in 2018, Walz got +43% deltas in counties that Hillary Clinton lost to Trump in 2016. Walz also does very well amongst high-school educated white voters. Trump looks more erratic by the day. He is mispronouncing a lot more words which makes me think there is some cognitive decline since he was hit in the ear by the shooter. Time will tell but I don’t think Trump is 100% anymore from a cognitive standpoint since the shooting. Of course he or his doctors will never reveal anything from the tests they did as Trump makes every doctor sign an NDA.
Lol, yeah you were real vocal when dementia joe was still in there.
I disagree with “Trump looks more erratic” but agree that Walz won 6 congressional elections in a row in an R+7 district (Cook PVI) that was Republican before him and Republican since he left that district to run for governor. Think Jon Tester.
Tampon Tim not a good choice but I think VP picks are largely irrelevant
Usually irrelevant, but sometimes not.
I agree with you, but I am a bit baffled that she didn’t pick Shapiro given that she cannot win without PA
Regardless of who is elected, we have a debt of $104K per person, $268K per worker. I don’t have that kind of money to just give to the government.
WHAT IS THE PLAN?
This is Trump’s race to lose. If I was running his campaign, I’d duct tape his mouth shut until November 6th.
If he had picked Candace Owens he could have just let her do the talking.
“Trump looked in a mirror and saw Vance.”
Maybe a stark choice is what’s needed. Democrats represent the WHO, WEF, Summit of the Future, Pact of the Future, Pandemic Treaty, and bugs for breakfast, lunch and dinner: “sustainable farming.” And i read yesterday that Tulsi Gabbard is on the Quiet Skies list and has 3 sky marshals tagging along behind her, any time she flies, as if she was a national security threat.
Tulsi would have been a smarter pick than Vance.
Trying to build a coalition of people who identify as something something or another isn’t easy. At some point somebody will have to be jettisoned. The numbers were telling her it was Israel supporters or at least turn the support dial way down by not getting a Jewish VP.
If she went the other way the ornery free Palestine faction would show up at her events and crash them. Can’t have that. Smart move? Probably not. Neither is not putting your agenda on the campaign website. The media is running cover for her in overtime so she does have that going for her.
Senator Casey has a target on his back.
Here: https://democrats.org/where-we-stand/party-platform/
I said her personal site. Not the DNC site. Take out a student loan and take junior college reading comprehension 101. I will pay for it. I actually have to pay for it.
He called the pair “weird,” a word that went viral among Democrats.
Republicans should just flip the script and call the Democrats ticket, weird. The term will burn out in short order.
You argue like a toddler.
Like a Democrat. Ftfy.
What’s really weird is believing that we need tampons in boys’ bathrooms for “menstruating non-females” — which is the bill Walz signed into law. Ugh.
He is a tampon. Especially now.
It’s not about who’s more moderate – Walz or Shapiro or Kelly or whoever. It’s about who LOOKS more moderate/normal. Harris & Obama pulled the “Fat Old White Guy in a Jean Jacket” trick. It’s been working for Jon Tester for years. Note that Tester is the only democrat to win state-wide in Montana. Walz looks like half the men in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Plus, he was born and raised in Nebraska, so he’ll win Omaha’s one electoral vote (which Trump could have needed to get a 269-269 tie). This pick is – unfortunately – a stroke of genius. It’s not about winning a particular state. It’s about winning Midwest white people’s votes. Vance the celebrated author, Yale-educated lawyer and Silicon Valley venture capitalist can’t top Walz, the high school teacher and wrestling coach. Which wife will resonate more with middle aged white women – Gwen Walz or Usha Chilukuri Vance?
Walz and Kamala are in the same age, but he looks like her father. Kamala with her Jamaican father, Indian mother, her Jewish husband and two step-children is a weird family. Add ex SF mayor, a nanny and a cat to the salad.
don’t forget the ex.
Weird family, raised in another country. America would never elect anyone like that. Oh wait … Si se puede.
As a Midwesterner the fat teacher meme is not attractive at all. It’s condescending and fake as hell.
He doesn’t have to bring a majority of white people. He just has to reduce Trump’s winning margin among white people. Meanwhile, Trump is trying to win black votes. Besides, since when is “fake as hell” a problem in American politics?
..and which “white people” is Tampon Tim going to appeal to?
Gwen Walz said she loved the smell of tires burning during the 2020 BLM riots in Minneapolis. That doesn’t resonate too well with me.
1.) He’s a non-threatening old white dude… like Biden was for Obama
2.) He’s not a howling rage monkey spitting vitriol at everyone
3.) He genuinely tries to govern in a way that benefits everyone
People are sick of angry weirdos preaching doom and hate.
Oh you mean like Biden’s Red and Black presentation with the Armed Marines in Backround calling 80 million Americans dangerous.
Come to think of it that must have just been for funzies and not weird at all.
Joe Biden is Mr. Normalcy and Harris is Ms. Normalcy
Harris getting whitewashed so clean, she is a Regular Dorothy saying there is no place like home and then clicking her Ruby slippers together and away she goes.
Weirdos tend to be dangerous. The army can handle you.
Most weirdos are too fat and gay to be dangerous.
It remains Assholes like yourself that will put Trump in for a second term.
Thank You for participating in demonstrating where the Democrat Party is at.
Weird –
Surrender (Live at Nippon Budokan, Tokyo, JPN – April 1978) (youtube.com)
Ya voting to enshrine mutilation of child’s genitalia into law. Great pick Kamala…. And we’re the weirdos. At least we ain’t sickos
You weirdos have an odd fixation with children’s genitals.
There you go again…
Ranting Tulsi/Kelly bs cont.
Local church food bank was very busy today. Lot of young Mothers with kids in tow.
Must be all that successful Progressive economy working so well.
Vote progressive is a vote for poverty.
Kinda catchy campaign slogan. We have a winner.
If only interest rates were lower, life would be easier and they would be so much better off!
Lower interest rates will be coming as the economy collapses into recession.
That will only make earning a living wage harder.
To change the economy which is what is supposed to create prosperity there needs be a change in the way it is governed.
I’m glad to see the very-democratic democrats have saved democracy yet again and officially appointed their spectacularly erudite presidential candidate after Biden’s untimely departure.
I feel comfortable knowing that brain-washing proceeds at a furious pace in the race to the finish line. Democracy? I call bullshit!
Has Biden departed? Surely he is still leading the country into economic oblivion? Or is he just oblivious?
Yeeeesh, I think Mark Kelly would have been a far better choice but perhaps unlike Hillary they are taking into account they might get smoked by Trump and this guy getting pulled outta Wisconsin is not gonna leave a political void to be exploited
Harris needs the Upper Midwest. Kelly does nothing there. Trump might have won AZ even if Kelly had been the VP pick.
Minnesota not Wisconsin
They both sound like made-up names for US states.
They are Native American names.
If in the next two/three months Bibi signs a ceasefire with Hamas, Kamala Harris will surf on a 50K Dow, benefitting from Biden’s legacy. SPX [1M] might drop to Oct 2021 close, or Aug 2022 high, in an A-B-C down, before taking off.
Oct 2022 low +13K to July 2024 high. 13K + 36K ==> 50K.
I do the charts before bs : Kelly can take the Dow to 70K. No good. Kamala Harris and Warren Buffett Jr taking the Dow to 50K is good enough. I don’t care if it’s Trump or Harris
News flash: they can print the Dow up to any number they desire.
They can cut debt with higher wages and a few 1998 type corrections that will fill gov coffer. On the way up it can be as volatile as gold on the way to $1,940
There will be no cease fire until Israel has ripped Hamas out of Gaza.
Sinwar, the little Hitler hiding in his bunker, replaced Haniyeh. Getting him
will wipe out Hamas military and political leadership, even by sacrificing a
few hostages.
how many olympics events u and your family attended.
Two. Fencing in Paris and the men’s bicycle race which went through our village twice. Sat in the cafe drinking beer and watched them cycle by. Would have seen more but my wife has a hard time Getting around.
Amen..
Send them back to Jordan.
Waltz is Bernie in MN. Bernie is a storefront for globalization. He is supported by NY and CA $. The question to ask is, who is really behind globalization, and why?
The Journal noted Walz supported universal free school meals for students, voting rights for the formerly incarcerated, driver’s licenses for migrants who crossed the border illegally, recreational marijuana and signed a law that made abortion a “fundamental right.”
Terrible Policies for the MAGA faithful!
I want kids to go hungry at school!
I want to deny the vote to (certain) citizens (who I don’t like)!
I want people to drive without licenses! So that they’re uninsured on the road!
I smoke marijuana but don’t want it to be legal! That’s radical liberalism!
I don’t want people to have abortions! Unless I need to get one!
Sounds to me like policies that are actually popular with a large portion of the populace.
I was just going to say, none of these positions seem terribly controversial. I think I read elsewhere that he also provided healthcare to migrants (medicaid?) but that seems reasonable too, as preventive care can end up saving the State money over overburdened ERs.
Great except citizens do not get the same free healthcare and have to pay for migrant’s healthcare out of their taxes.
“free” is never free… The same people who clamour for free healthcare, simultaneously clamour for higher wages for nurses and orderlies… Yet fail to make the link. They want to exploit medical workers and fund everything through debt and default on the debt through inflation that everyone pays, including the nurses and orderlies, and the illegals – oh but wait, the illegals are the ones that never have to pay.
So they are stealing from the working class… How very unsocialist.
Walk me through the process of getting auto insurance for illegal aliens.
It’s called Uninsured Motorist coverage / premium on your own policy.
First, you give them a free car. Then you issue them a drivers license. Then you throw in an all perils insurance policy.
They do not care about the insurance the goal is the ID. With the DL you can gain other forms of ID and get benefits.
Or you could fund healthcare in the countries they come from at even lower cost, and secure the border, preventing the exploitation of illegal aliens by criminal gangs.
Please give us a list of the latest Democrat bullet points that come in identical format and with a lag time I could set my watch to.
Things such as not telling parents that their first-grade teacher has decided that their kids should change gender? That is very decent, don’t you think?
Indecent proposal.
Essentially they want the government to steal your children.
You’re joking, right?
I no longer have access to the data, but a study a few years back showed that with few exceptions, the cost of benefits given to first-generation immigrants exceeds what they pay in taxes. The exceptions are mostly foreign graduate students who legally enter the country.
Also, the impact of ‘low-end’ immigrants is mostly felt by poor communities, and those least able to provide for themselves.
Is it decent to steal from the working class to fund criminals?
I await the day when ‘visitors with driving licenses’ slaughter a few schools of preschoolers while they are eating their free lunches.
Sounds to me like policies could go awfully awry
“I want to deny the vote to (certain) citizens (who I don’t like)!”
Illegal aliens shouldn’t be voting. Any American adult can afford an ID card, so Democrats are Gaslighting that Republicans are trying to prevent eligible people from voting. People in the country illegally should not be driving in the first place, as they are breaking the law by being here. Democrats say no one is above the law, but they exempt illegal aliens from that, along with certain other politically protected people.
In most other countries taking id to vote is normal.
Maybe not in Somalia or Afghanistan.
When they say “great” they mean like Russia… the original shithole country. Every chapter of Russia’s history begins with “and then it got worse”.
They’ll happily suffer if they think it makes someone else suffer more.
Russophobia is the fashionable xenophobia these days, don’t you know.
Straw man
“Free school meals” are not free, someone is paying working class people to provide each stage of the food supply chain. You want to deny working class people a living wage to subsidise the indolent?!
Convicts have never had the vote. You want election integrity with minimum corruption in voting? Or do you want to turn elections into who can buy the most votes, and which criminals can be hired to intimidate voters and dispose of ballots? What if those missing votes are Democrat votes?
Driving licences are not motor insurance. Why should foreign citizens enjoy all the same rights and privileges of citizens? The implication is that you want to abolish citizenship, and the implication of that is you want to abolish countries, and the implication of that is you want to return humanity to “might is right” and the law of the jungle where gangs rule and violence is everywhere, with no protection available for the people you want to protect, because there’s no government any more.
Marijuana is a minor issue. As long as people don’t buy it from organised mafias or operate vehicles and machinery and just lay on their couch all day masturbating and eating pizza – and I ‘m not accusing you of anything, it’s fine.
Abortion is a states rights issue. America was created so that people could have different states with different cultures and rights in them, that’s how a republic works. Abortion can’t be on demand, it needs cautious medical and legal protections and filters in place to avoid undue harm to big humans and little humans.
Mr Walz isn’t for any of that stuff, and he also wants the government to intervene between parents and their children to ensure that children are brainwashed, mutilated and sterilised in the name of an anti-scientific, aggressive misogynistic radical political fad/cult that turns children into lifelong patients. But to hell with medical ethics, just go ahead Dr Mengele, experiment on those vulnerable children.
Harris-Trump race is first since 1976 without a Bush, Clinton or Biden
April Rubin

https://www.axios.com/2024/08/06/kamala-first-election-without-biden-bush-clinton
And with an economy to match the 70s.
Movin’ on to the next generation.
“I suspect Harris is currently ahead.” You have to ignore the “Harris is up in the polls” BS.
This election is not a national race, it is a race to win three states Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
How does the Harris ticket pick up the working class white voters who abandoned Hillary in 2016 for Trump, and switched from Trump to Biden in 2020.
Harris/Walz going to pick up these voters without Covid to assist. Unlikely. Shapiro would of made Pennsylvania more competitive, if Harris threw under the bus at the last moment – politicians have egos – state may no longer be in play.
Shapiro would have thrown Michigan. Fetterman has critiqued Shapiro, not clear that he would have really taken PA.
As in 2020, the election will be decided by the effectiveness of brain washing (on both sides)
The Brain-Wash ratio:
mphT-neg % of total mass media coverage (minutes/hour) of Trump in a negative light
mphtT-pos % of total mass media coverage of Trump in a positive light
mphK-neg % of total mass media coverage of Kamala in a negative light
mphK-pos % of total mass media coverage of Kamala in a positive light
mphT-pos/ mphT-neg relative to mphK-pos / mphK-neg
Some (definitely not all) of the liberal voters are anti-genocide. Both Biden (and Harris) are pro-genocide. Picking Shapiro would have meant adding yet another pro-genocide candidate. This would have pissed off the anti-genocide liberal voters. There are not many of them (because most liberals are PEPs – Progressive Except for Palestine) but they still are a large enough voting bloc.
The only genocide happening in Gaza is in the minds of the deluded and those who do not understand the definition of the word genocide.
Jojo, Same thing happened during Covid. People accepted the re-definition of the words immunity and vaccine. People will believe what they want to believe, even if it’s coming from psychopaths doing what they accuse others of doing.
Genocide in Germany and genocide in Gaza have a lot in common. When the goal is clearly the elimination of every man, woman, and child within bombing range, genocide is entirely descriptive, regardless of your definition.
At the end of the day, I fear we will realize terrorism was the excuse, It was always about land acquisition.
Why did Israel return the Sinai to Egypt when they negotiated their peace agreement? Just like the whole “genocide” (against a Gaza population that has doubled in the last 25 years) the “land acquisition” myth (read: expansionist/imperialist) doesn’t fit the reality, but it does fit the drive to Jew-hatred camoflagued as “anti-Zionism”.
First, Israel handed over the Sinai (except the Taba) as part of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty of 1979. Without it, there would be no treaty. Taba was later handed over after arbitration.
Jojo doesn’t like the word ‘genocide,’ so, let’s use the right terminology.
Vernichtungs-Schlacht, is a “battle of annihilation.” The IDF was initially charged with depriving Hamas and its supporters of the ability to fight. The Biden administration went along with it.
However, in the process, the IDF shifted to Vernichtungs-Krieg. It is now a “war of annihilation” with the goal being to permanently evict, or exterminate members of the population, regardless of capacity to resist, or whether they support Hamas. By the way, this would be a war crime..
There are two reasons for the resulting genocide: one is to increase the territory of Israel. The other is to eliminate all future resistance caused by the battle of annihilation.
Israel has now gone beyond the bounds of proportionality. They are rapidly losing support from most of the world. Eventually, their only support will come from the US, which does not have the leadership needed to stop the war..
Ah, “without it they wouldn’t have handed the land BACK”, but they did, and the Egyptian who agreed to the treaty, Anwar Sadat, was murdered by the group, Muslim Brotherhood, who spawned Hamas. Sadat was guilty of making peace with the Jews. For them, and for you evidently, Jews and Israelis can be charged with “grabbing land”, agree to return the land with a treaty of peace, and still be guilty. Guilty of what, really? That’s the thing you really can’t contemplate, and so you make up noble sounding rationalizations.
Proportionality makes zero sense, you need to defeat your enemies. If they can’t put up a serious fight it doesn’t mean you don’t get to really fight them.
Too funny! Who drew up the rules of war such that responses must be “proportional”? Is that an internet or UN rule?
How about instead “Trample the weak and hurdle the dead”? How about, teach Hamas and other terrorists a lesson they will take a long time to forget?
However, as I keep repeating, the killing of Palestinian civilians could have ended 9 months ago if only Hamas had chosen to release the hostages, laid down their weapons and surrendered.
They did not and so Israel and Hamas will fight to the last Palestinian in Gaza or as you write “Vernichtungs-Schlacht”.
Many in Europe dream of a new genocide.
Right, because Gaza is the new Auschwitz. Can you define holocaust? Didn’t think so.
How about crusades? Got a definition?
This sums up the VP pick:
Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal – Vice (smbc-comics.com)
I agree. This is a nice summation statement. The Dems chose to stick with the current constituency of the party and not anger the far left, which is what Shapiro or Kelly pick would have done, especially Shapiro.
Walz will bring no new votes to the Dems that they didn’t already have locked up. This could be a serious strategy mistake for the Dems.

I am glad the Democrats chose him because it is hard to find someone who is less remarkable by nature and accomplishments than Kamala, but the Democrat party has managed to find a VP that will not outshine Kamala Harris. I was worried that they would have picked Mark Kelly who does have considerable qualifications and competences but as VP he would have blown Kamala out of the water by comparison but now that risk is no longer present. We now have a president and a VP that are both weak figures in every way. Nevertheless they could win because the Democrat Party Machine is very well oiled.
And they are running against a cult leader who will after he loses the election have his followers drink the poisoned cool-aide for which he will charge them $12.00 for a cup.
He will of course fake drinking it himself.
I bet you own a cat. Am I right?
You can’t even spell kool-aid, I guess that’s what drinking it does to you
A race to the bottom.
My god. Walz is the worst. I do not believe he was reelected without cheating.
We have the idiotic 100% Renewable energy by 2040 law here. What I call the Impoverish and Kill Minnesotans Act
He jailed people who tried to keep their businesses open during COVID
Walz is pure evil
And if they need to keep Minnesota Blue, a state that has not voted GOP for POTUS since I was a child, well they have serious problems Walz is not going to fix
The Reps have been taken over by MAGA and the Dems have been taken over by Progressives.
Dems are run by corporate donors desiring someone they can control. It was easy to control an elderly plank of wood and its easy to control someone who, like the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz, lacks a brain.
Regressives
Aggressives
There’s nothing progressive about them
Mish; This is all about keeping Minnesota blue, for there are a high concentration of Muslims 3% of the state population with more Illegals now. Walz is just another version of the extreme democrats.
“Minnesota nice” is a dog whistle phrase. 66% of murders are committed by blacks in Minnesota. Blacks make up 10% of the population in the state.
Nice… I feel a meme coming on
This is all about picking off gettable votes in PA/MI/WI and Shapiro being a Zionist would induce Tlaib to tell her Muslim fellows to sit out in November, minus 15 EVs right there. Also, Shapiro has some mild sexual harrassment stuff jumpbling around his admin. Walz has no controversy. He also has a good track record of working with both sides, and he flipped legislature to get the trifecta.
Not to mention, Trump’s FIMD is making GA possibly an option for Dems again. Keep it up, Donnie Dingbat!
Rando – he flipped the legislature that was barely split (House was already D, Senate was barely R). This was the “Red Wave that Never Was” election.
Other than drivers licenses for illegal entrants I don’t see what’s so Progressive about MNs policies. I read about some allegations regarding Shapiro. Don’t know if they’re true but Walz seems a decent human being which in today’s political environment is unusual. I guess we’ll see if either VP matters to voters but I suspect not.
He decently let Minneapolis burn during the riots and decently signed into law illegals getting drivers licenses so they can vote in this election. He is a very decent person. Personally, I see him as the typical Democrat career politician. If you toe the line the Party will take care of you.
Have a look at some pictures of Minneapolis in 2019 and then compare it to pictures today. That’s the opposite of decency.
Kamala would never pick a decent human being
Other than Portland, Seattle, Chicago, and maybe Bay Area/LA/core big cities, can’t get lefter than Minnesota, specifically MSP. Worked there for 30 years, they are batcrap crazy on the all things left. This was about shoring up the base progressives, gung ho on killing babies, and every other pet project the left drones on on an on about. I’m confident I just won a 50:1 bet that Minnesota stayed blue–only voted for a Republican once in 68 years. True to form this will be a coin toss election nationally as will 2028, 2032, 2036……..
Harris has done nothing, said nothing, answered nothing and no one since her presumptive nomination. The internet has been scrubbed of her most liberal label and her word salad comments do continue when she says anything at all. No mind, she’s not Trump in the eyes of the not-truly-independent never-gonna-vote-for-Trump pretenders. Indict a ham sandwich? They’re gonna try to elect one!!
And what goes with a ham sandwich?? Apparently a progressive state liberal governor like Walz. Goodness I hope Pennsylvania pays attention and votes accordingly–they tried to kill Trump there and she couldn’t make the easy pick of the Pennsylvania governor. If Trump can win Pennsylvania and GA then MI, WI, NH and even AZ and NV can remain blue and still crawl over the finish line.
I’ve posted many times, most folks who say they are independent are simply looking for a reason to pull the blue left lever they’ve pulled their entire life. Usually that reason is because it’s Tuesday or November.
If you’ve seen what’s become of everything liberals and big government central-planning progressives touch you shouldn’t be hanging on every word someone says or doesn’t say, just watch the flawed policies of the left and how they impact you, not the words.
I prefer to wait until babies are born, then diddle and eat them. Stay triggered!
Then Kamala’s your huckleberry!
Many a true word spoken in jest.
Excellent analysis. I live in Rochester, MN and won’t go near Minneapolis.
I’ve voted for both Dems and Repubs in the past according to their stated policies. No longer, after the mega cult takeover I’d vote for a dead dog if it was listed in the dems side of my ballot. Until the mega cult is gone I’ll not even consider ANY republican so clean up your house or die in it.
Kamala Harris chose a Jewish Husband. Picking Josh Shapiro is a concentrated portfolio. She picked a mainsteet gov bc he called Trump a weird. Since then the “weirdo exchange” dominate the two camps.
That’s why Kelly should have been her first choice.
But his kids recent “drug” problems surely must have impacted this decision.
Trump screwed the pooch by picking Vance. Mish is correct in that Trump saw Vance in his image. Just my opinion, but Trump needed to soften the ticket with a moderate with a brain…Tulsi Gabbard.
Oh, with Tulsi, what could have been …
The only thing Tulsi had going for her is that she was a woman and if picked would have sent the message that DEI is alive in the Republican party. That would have been the message to voters. I am not sure if she would have brought in more voters than choosing her would have lost.
She would have brought a lot more than that as a person, but you’re right it’s about how many voters they bring.
Is that your personal email as your commenting user ID?
@ Woodsie Thanks for responding with that. Today I had new notice from Mishtalk to re-subscribe and my email was inserted into the username box and I did not notice that. I need to take down my personal email.
The Dems/DeepState put Tulsi on the TSA Terrorist Watch LiSSSSt two weeks ago. That will teach her not to shred Hellery and Kumala!
I’m glad he screwed this up! He belongs in jail which may come next month.
Tim Wolz – The Sarah Palin of Minnesota.
Surprised she didn’t pick someone zombie squad member. You know….. for diversity.
Diversity to her is an old white male. Her party seems to think they need to throw a bone to them so they might vote for her and not notice the agenda.
‘Minnesota Nice’ is almost extinct.
When that term became popular and was parodied in the movie Fargo the demographics were a lot different than what they are today 30 years later. Most of the guys I play hockey with who grew up in Minnesota in the 80s-00s say the Minnesota they remember is gone.
When Dru Sjodin was raped and murdered by Alfonso Rodriguez, that was the inflection when it should’ve been obvious to everyone that the Boomers had flushed North Dakota/Minnesota down the toilet.
Wasn’t Jacob Frey available? He and Omar can describe the Summer of Love 2020 as, “…some people did some tings…” .
There goes Pennsylvania. Congrats, President Trump!
Dems have won PA in 7 of the last 8 Presidentials. Don’t you think Shapiro can still push votes her way, wink wink?
Shouldn’t there be a law disallowing dual nationals from higher office? Surely an obvious conflict of interest in having an Israeli VP?
Does he have dual nationality?
I don’t often disagree with Silver. I’d rarely take the other side of a bet with him.
Would have preferred Polis or Shapiro, but there’s a bit more appeal there to some voters. You hate to say the bit you’re not supposed to say out loud, but a minority president with a minority veep wouldn’t play well in all circles. Avoids the whole Israel question, so it’s safer in that way as well. You could view it as a necessary nod to US racial realities. He’s also a nod to a more populist appeal – former teacher, vet, more relatable than Shapiro to some folks.
Looks like a bet that likeability matters (though personally I’m not sure that it should) and in that sense a good offset to Vance.
Silver is probably right. A safer choice, but safe isn’t necessarily what she needs to win. It limits the downside, but she needs some upside. Maybe she’s counting on continued undisciplined behavior from Trump and “MN Nice” starts to look….nice.
Polis and Shapiro are both tribe members, I was informed from Harris’s staff she would not pick a Jew. I almost stopped believing that.
I understand that many people don’t care for Trump, but …the fact that Kamala Harris could actually be a serious contender for the presidency is just crazy.
Beyond belief.
Everyone said the same thing about Trump in 2016
Yeah, no. She is without a doubt, unlikeable and an idiot.
No, they really didn’t.
