You should expect anything, Including an attempt by CNN to influence the outcome with one-sided questions. Regardless, Trump is in a position to hit a home run.
I run through some potential questions below, and how I believe Trump should handle them. First let’s recap the Debate Rules.
Debate Rules Q&A
Q: How long will the debate be?
A: Ninety minutes, starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time, with two commercial breaks. That is a normal length for a presidential debate, but the two commercial breaks are noteworthy.
Q: Will there be an in-person audience?
A: No. The candidates will debate in a CNN studio with no live audience. This was a demand from the Biden campaign.
Q: How will the candidates be positioned?
A: They will stand at lecterns. Mr. Biden won a coin toss to choose his spot, and he will be on the right side of viewers’ TV screens.
Q: Will there be opening and closing statements?
A: Opening statements, no; closing statements, yes. The order of the closing statements was determined by a coin toss. Mr. Biden will make his first, and Mr. Trump will have the last word of the debate.
Q: How long will the candidates have to answer questions?
A: CNN will allow two minutes for each answer and one minute for rebuttals. The moderators, CNN hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, will be able to grant extra time at their discretion.
Q: How will the moderators prevent interruptions?
A: The candidates’ microphones will be muted when it isn’t their turn to speak. That was another Biden request, intended to guard against Mr. Trump’s penchant for interrupting and speaking over debate opponents.
Debate Commission Co-Chair Slams CNN Over Rules Of Trump-Biden Face-Off
The Hill reports Debate Commission Co-Chair Slams CNN
On the debate having commercial breaks for the first time: “This is an important part of American civics. Why would you break twice to run ads?”
On the lack of audience at CNN studios in Atlanta: “They’re saying there shouldn’t be an audience because people clap and cheer and scream, but that’s not true. That happens at primary debates, not presidential debates. That’s a phony thing the Biden people came up with.”
On moderators allowing for 2 minutes of uninterrupted answers from the candidates: “It’s almost like an interview the way they’re doing it, but this is supposed to be a debate between the two candidates.”
Fahrenkopf also argued there’s an inherent conflict of interest for CNN, which is producing the debate, coming up with the rules, moderating — and later providing commentary and analysis.
“How will the talking heads on CNN do a fair analysis after they sponsored it? It’s a real challenge,” he said.
Fair Analysis?!
There will not be a fair analysis by any media reporting Left or Right. However, CNN is uniquely in the position producing the debate, coming up with the rules, moderating — and later providing commentary and analysis.
What to Expect in Questions
CNN will bring up everything negative possible about Trump in an attempt to get Trump to flare up.
Other than someone ridiculous like Racheal Maddow various members of The View, it would be difficult to find a more biased set of moderators.
However, if Trump can remain poised, he can easily turn any bias into his favor.
What to Expect in Answers
Both Trump and Biden will try to get on each other’s nerves. Biden will likely have an easier time in he gets cream puff questions while Trump get harder one.
Otherwise, this is Trump’s debate to lose. And the more biased the question, the harder it will be for Trump to remain calm, but the bigger the win for he can pull it off.
Proposed Answers for Trump
Q: Did you lose the election in 2020?
A: There are a number of irregularities that give cause for reasonable doubt. But I am not campaigning on 2020. Right or wrong, that decision is history. We need to change voting procedures this time to make sure the election is fair. I am looking ahead.
Q: Will you accept the election results in 2024?
A: Yes, immediately. The only exception applies to a recount in any state that could potentially change the result.
Q: Why should anyone vote for a felon?
A: Everyone need to realize the unusual political nature of the case. A politically hand-picked prosecutor turned a minor misdemeanor charge into a felony in a case that would not have been tried anywhere else in the country. No one is above the law, but no one should be beneath the law either. This was a political conviction start to finish. The judge was not impartial, and I the case is highly likely to be thrown out on appeal. And when it is, I expect an apology from President Biden.
The closer Trump can come to answers like those, on every issue, without all the crooked Joe name calling, the more he is likely to win in a landslide.
Bonus Question: Is that asking too much of Trump?
Probably. But in addition to seeing if Biden can last 90 minutes, that’s why everyone will be tuned in tonight.
Got popcorn?

The most surprising thing was CNN trashing Biden after the debate and suggesting Dems need to replace him.
Did they really?
Will Japan be the straw that collapses the global economy … and civilization?
I cannot see a way out… they cannot raise rates…. hyperinflation imminent????
Incumbent Kanda has been the main figure in handling the government’s catastrophic interventions in the foreign exchange market, which have been meant to arrest the yen’s slide against the dollar, yet despite spending a record $60+ billion two months ago on halting the yen’s implosion, the yen is now at the lowest level since the Plaza Accord.
And while no amount of intervention will prevent the yen from imploding further – to do that the BOJ will have to raise rates to 4% or higher, setting of a cataclysmic collapse of the entire Japanese bond market – the outrage among the populace at the runaway inflation in Japan in large part due to the plunging currency, is finally being addressed now that Japan is facing election in a few months, and scapegoat time has arrived.
We fully expect another intervention round in the coming days, one which sends USDJPY back to the low 150s before the pair resumes it trek higher until such time as Japan finally loses control over both its currency and bond markets. That will be the beginning of the end of the current doomed experiment in neoliberalism.
https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/japan-fires-its-top-currency-diplomat-yen-disintegrates-another-intervention-looms
Neoliberalism? Japan can be mistaken for a lot of things but never ever neoliberalism.
And to be sure not all of this happen on a single party or person’s watch. The slide started long ago because it was not liberals or conservatives but due to sheer human greed of trying to win elections at any economic costs. This is why all governments eventually fail. It is not the system but the error of human ego.
I find no Presidential canidate that can represents the substance of Mish’s Blog.
I’m hopeful Mish really drives that home between now and the election.
We’re screwed.
If you think any person or party or economic philosophy can save us, then you don’t quite understand the nature of humans.
Agree with your first point, but the quintessence of a low-iq mid-wit human is the false belief of salvation through their preferred savior. History is replete.
Dems in full panic to replace Biden on the ticket right now but nobody is mentioning that this loon is President right now! If he not fit to be the candidate how can he remain President?
Reagan was worse as president and didn’t remember Iran-Contra. Nancy Reagan was helping make decisions with his chief of staff his whole second term. Biden is nowhere near as bad.
Reagan was NOTHING like to what we all just saw tonight. You’re all just shameless liars at this point.
He was effectively hidden after 86. Later in his life he said he remembered nothing of his second term. Nancy knew it all along as well. She did what was best for the country.
Biden was slack-jawed all night, like he was trying to catch flies.
Joe actually prepared one full week for this ??? LOL
it was full on dementia
Hillary cornered the market on adrenochrome and wouldn’t share.
They should have given hit a shot of meth!
Biden crashed and burned as predicted. Gavin is taking a shower
Somewhere Putin is celebrating. Eastern Europe will fall again once Trump becomes President and the US exits NATO. The world will look very different if Trump becomes President again. But whatever happens there will global instability until 2033.
Why did Putin wait until Biden was President before invading Ukraine?
Blinken telling Lavrov in January, 2022 that Gayto reserves the right to station nuclear weapons in the Ukraine certainly precipitated it.
Because Trump told him to. Trump was president when the border got flooded after election day. He made sure to give Biden multiple disasters. Trump has deals in place with Putin and Saudi Arabia to make America horrible under Biden. Trump would have handed Ukraine on a platter to Putin had he been reelected. I’m sure the same deal is in place now and Putin will ask for and get more.
such an idiotic statement, there is global chaos right now !!!!
And there was no chaos under Trump ? Trump enabled autocrats and started the true sellout of our global partners to the autocrats.
You know who’ll be celebrating once they realize Biden is on the way out? The millions of Russians who live in the Ukraine, don’t even speak Ukrainian and who will gladly accept Russian citizenship. Putin has no desire to invade any Gayto countries – although Estonia better start acting right.
Agreed
More anti Putin nonsense from ridiculous observer
Well I said a week ago I wouldn’t be surprised if Hillary Clinton was the nominee come August. Now the calls will grow for Clinton to step up.
I’m pretty sure Biden is already the official nominee in Ohio. They had to meet the deadline before the convention. Besides, they can’t kick Kamala to the curb.
The more important question: if Biden isn’t fit to be the candidate and must be replaced how the F is he fit to remain President right now?
Podesta is ordering the pizzas and hot dogs for the convention.
I’d give you an lol if it wasn’t so pathetically true and tragic
Will she “cackle” her way to victory this time The psychopath that she truly is
Well, how about a pinch hitter for Biden for the duration of the campaign?
Biden is toast and will be replaced. Headlines are already calling it.
Tinfoil types are saying this is why they had the first debate so early.
They needed a reason to replace Biden on the ticket. Now they have it.
“Tinfoil types” meaning astute observers.
Joe woke up when Trump said he was going to prison for quid pro quo.
Biden needs an opening in an assisted living facility.
Hospice
Trump could have been sharper, but it took six days of preparation for that performance by Biden. Holy Shit!
I’d feel safer if Biden used a walker. I’m always on edge when Biden hobbles unaided to or from the podium. He looks befuddled, unfocused.
Not enough talk about Hitler.
I will miss watching Trump stalking behind his opponent like he did with Hildebeast back in 2016.
What I expected is what I’m witnessing. An incoherent babbling stammering whispering imbecile Biden
Trump just said he did not have sex with a porn star. I’m not sure I can support him anymore – even if he likes Hitler.
Hilter treated Blondie better than Biden treats Commander.
If this were a 10 round fight they would have stopped it by now by SKO. Self knockout
This debate is like the game of Risk on Seinfeld that Kramer and Newman are playing..
George: Yeah. What’s that?
Jerry: Oh, it’s Risk, it’s a game of world domination being played by two guys
who can barely run their own lives.
I expect a few technical issues to give BIDEN time to recover, during the debate…
Recover ? He couldn’t get through the end of every sentence.
I expect more acting … more pointless questions… I expect Political World Wrestling Federation idiocy… it is all meaningless… so I will not watch.
I know they will not discuss this
Geopolitical / financial risks are proliferating and becoming more difficult to predict or hedge for a very basic reason: the era of global integration and accord has ended and the era of global disintegration and discord is heating up. In historian Peter Turchin’s terminology, when everyone finds reasons to cooperate, the result is an era of accord; when everyone finds reasons not to cooperate, the result is an era of discord.
Beneath the chaotic swirl of complex dynamics and risk, two core drivers emerge: de-globalization and de-financialization.
https://charleshughsmith.substack.com/p/10-geopolitical-financial-risks-to
Why would they bother to bring the 300m+ Americans in on the real issues? All they are about is watching sports and dancing with stars… with checking social media feeds… buying stuff…
Even if they were brought in on discussions like the above — they would not understand.. they would say it’s boring … and turn off the Tee Vee.. or switch over to a reality Tee Vee show….
You are barnyard animals… you get what you deserve … two clowns pretending to debate … and you can’t wait!!!!
https://fasteddynz.substack.com/p/humans-barnyard-animals-and-circus/
Biden will shit his pants but not know he did it. Trump will smell it and try to not react, but eventually will bellow “holy shit, Joe!” Jake Fapper will say “Mr Trump, no interruptions!” but the eye-watering stench will eventually cause Bash and Fapper to say “time for a commercial!” and run offstage.
Well, I wasn’t going to watch it but now…..
1) the event is not a debate. it is unsanctioned.
2) CNN will shamelessly abuse it’s role as host. expect wholesale shenanigans w/ regard to microphones, muting, time allowances, commercial interruptions, etc.
3) a verbal gang-rape of one candidate, while “moderators” perform as collective surrogate for the other candidate. IOW, ninety minutes of unhinged TDS mixed with dementia enablement.
CNN will do everything possible to injure DJT. No holds barred. Physical assault is on the bingo card, imo.
What do I expect?
Depends. Get it? Lol
For those interested:
—-
FWIW – muted microphones are only necessary because of the Abby Normal one.
Yup, they’ll mute him as soon as he starts mumbling “dog-faced pony soldier”.
Tonight, Biden can lose; Trump can’t win.
Trump can show is “normal”, as he has done whenever necessary; but TDS, stoked by MSM, remains regardless.
DVR is set for any goodies….o.w., might skim a transcript.
I expect blinding intellectual and verbal brilliance from both candidates who will come up with compelling arguments that will convince all but the most mentally challenged of their competence and their deep love for us.
Sarcasm of the day: Score 10 out of 10
Mish, I’ve been following you a long time. I respect the hell out of you but I can’t fathom the support you show for Trump.
I still get accused of TDS
And if you read the totality of my stuff, it is not that friendly to Trump.
For example
Trump’s Plan to Replace the Income Tax with Tariffs is Economic Nonsense
https://mishtalk.com/economics/trumps-plan-to-replace-the-income-tax-with-tariffs-is-economic-nonsense/
That was just a few days ago.
I bash Trump all the time on Tariffs. And I think he is an arrogant narcissist.
But between the two of them, this country cannot take the inflationary madness that Biden will deliver.
Also Biden is every bit as divisive as Trump. He is no uniter.
“Inflationary madness” — nice.
Buy Doc Brown’s Delorean, set the clock for the year 2020, find this blog, fine tune for the first 6 months for the Covid Theater episodes and the last 6 months for the election episodes. How soon people forget!
I disagree with Mish on some stuff but I think he’s been relatively even keeled with Trump vs Biden especially compared to the partisan outlets.
Agree. Trump is not fit for office. This is a guy who hired his valet for a top government post. Nearly all of his former White House cabinet members and staffers do not support him because he is unstable, uninformed (won’t read briefings), doesn’t take advice, and can’t take criticism. He fails to understand what Putin is doing in Ukraine and what a disaster for Europe and the world if he wins. There is no top world leader (who is not a dictator) who wants him back. We may not like Biden and the lunatic fringe Dems included inside his tent, but at least he hires qualified people and can control himself.Having said that, your economic summaries are priceless.
I expect a bunch of BS.
‘Andy of Mayberry’ re-runs on tonight?
I expect nothing. Nor do I expect anyone will change from one to the other. All minds are made up or those who have not made up their minds are likely mindless.
I expect not to watch it but will be interested in comparing the summaries between The Daily Show and Fox News..
All-in-all, “debates” are worthless. Debates are an anachronism from the far past when news was sparse and the the internet didn’t exist. Besides, debates don’t lock anyone into any positions they might express. Everyone will be looking for the faux pas.
If we were honest, we already know all that we need to know about each of these presumed candidates (presumed because neither has yet been officially nominated) from the unending DAILY coverage of every utterance and every move they undertake month after month after month from our horserace coverage.
This morning, I tried to watch the morning news summary but even on the BBC, they were doing 15 minute long front-running discussions of what we MIGHT see in this extravaganza.
Why not just wait until it happens and then discuss what was said (or not said) afterwards? CNN, MSNBC, Scripps and FOX were all the same; debate, debate, debate. Bah! I turned off the TV.
I will DVR it and watch it later, and maybe not all at once. But I will watch it.
“…but will be interested in comparing the summaries between The Daily Show and Fox News..”
The Daily Show? That’s some really unbiased, cerebral commentary and deep political analysis there. Why not just tune into the Honey Boo-Boo Network and see what the profound intellects at The View are saying?
The annoying thing about presidential debates is the candidates never actually answer the questions posed to them.
They just spew out rehearsed empty rhetoric that has nothing to do with the actual question being asked.
I’m fully expecting this out of Biden. Biden will also lie about his ‘accomplishments’ and incredulously claim things like he’s “securing the border”.
I’m also expecting Biden to say “we need to protect our democracy” several times.
I’m also expecting Biden to pull the Putin/Russia card (Trump is either Putin’s buddy or blackmail victim, take your pick).
No way Biden can do 90 minutes without being juiced.
The contrast between being juiced and his normal state will be there for all America to see.
I do hope Trump shows command over substance and takes things there. It would be a mistake for him to act as he does at a rally.
Serious problems Americans are experiencing. Many for the first time in their lives are coming up short in daily lives. Trump needs to show he has answers that will work.
Softball questions to Biden while people are hurting is not going to get him a second term. I do not believe he is capable of answering in a coherent manner and demonstrate he has anything but a one liner answer.
add: If the gist of CNN and Biden approach turns out to be attempts to smear Trump, he can destroy them simply by being Presidential in demeanor and presentation.
Just show the people that he is their President.
Might not the re-juicing be what the commercial breaks are for?
I have been posting sarcastic comments everywhere else, so I suppose I should be serious just one time.
The moderators will act as Biden surrogates.Trump will rein it in.Biden will be coherent because of the shots they give him.The media will declare Biden the winner. It will have no impact on the polls unless I am wrong about #2 or #3
One other thing. At the bidding of a rabid Biden supporter friend who thought it showed Trump’s deterioration, I watched the first 10 minutes of the recent love fest between him and Dr. Phil. It did not show a deteriorated Trump, but it did remind me that Trump often does well in 1-on-1 conversations.
The rules go far to turn this into a sort of series of 1-on-1 conversations. I think there is a real chance that Trump could do well, at least if he makes sure not to let his 3 opponents get under his skin. If it were me, my answers to any provocations would be brief and steady, and I would return to three themes: the economy, crime, and illegal immigration.
Also, if I were Trump, I would gently goad Biden more and more as the debate goes on, given Biden’s lack of stamina. If Biden loses it, this will be much more likely to happen in the last half hour.
Both Trump and Biden will respect each other. No tumbling. No mumblig. No insults. A tie. No winner or loser. CNN debate will not affect the Nov election. Tomorrow the markets might rock
CNN will respect both candidates. The moderators will not help Biden. Jack and Dana will be sharp, neutral. CNN has to reinstate itself as a serious network, to regain audience. CNN is on trial today just like Trump and Biden.
CNN is owned by Warner Brothers Discovery. CNN isn’t intended to draw an audience. It exists to make viewers so exasperated they turner to another Warner-owned channel like the Food Network or The Cooking Channel.
What I want to know is what happens during those commercial breaks? Are they allowed to go back stage for some coaching or use the rest room? If I’m Trump, I use that time to walk around on the stage and see if Biden will follow suit. There is an excellent chance that if he does, that after 2 minutes he will either fall or become wildly confused on where he is and where he is supposed to return to (ie which side). Both of which would be catastrophic for him.
I expect a shit show in terms of questions.
But my answer to the Felon one would be:
Why wouldn’t someone vote for a felon if they are the better candidate with great policies for the country and I have great policies (and then launch into describing some of them because this is a free chance to get off topic and back to his great policies like no tax on tips/green cards for graduates etc).
One thing Trump should attempt to do is prove his physical capability far exceeds Bidens. Remember how Jack Palance did a one hand pushup at the Oscars after making City Slickers to impress upon everyone his physical capability. Trump doesn’t need to do a one handed pushup but some demonstration of physical capability (just tossing something on the ground and going and picking it up is probably outside Bidens capacity) would go a long way when Biden couldn’t match.
Excellent question about what happens during breaks. I suspect CNN has designed them as Biden rest breaks. We shall see.
The breaks will like in the MMA ring. WIpe the sweat off, apply some vaseline to the cuts, give a pep talk and a shoulder massage. Then as the intermission ends, lift each out of their comfy chairs and push them forward with a “GO GET ‘EM CHAMP!”
Bathroom breaks. They both are old men.
With gobs of money to hire the best urologists and top of the line treatments years ago.
Good analysis, Mish. Maybe you should set up a sideline political consulting business.
Alot of bull-crap
Hoping for laughs and entertainment. Prepared for utter disappointment and boredom.
I don’t trust CNN
I don’t trust Biden [his devious handlers will have brewed up a cocktail of drugs for Biden; otherwise he couldn’t stand 10 minutes.
I don’t trust lamestream media to be fair [it might happen]
I hope Trump remains calm enough to triumph.
Remember, only about 15% of the viewers will be on the bubble. They are independents, and CNN’s trust ratings among independents are in the toilet. So if they visibly tilt this, it will backfire on their guy, Biden, and on themselves.
Great answer for the criminal conviction.
Several lies per minute from Biden, no challenges from CNN’s biased moderators.
