How Long Before Biden Drops Out or Is Forced Out of the Election?

Will Biden stay in until the bitter end? Be forced out by the 25th amendment? Drop out voluntarily? Let’s discuss when and how. I have specific dates and reasons.

Betting Odds

The Betting Odds on Polymarket suggest a 60 percent chance that Biden drops out. But it does not specify how.

Biden can drop out voluntarily. In the voluntary category I include extreme pressure (but not threats) from friends, associates, and major contributors.

Biden can drop out involuntarily in several ways. Two ways are easy to count. The first way for Biden to be forced out is by the 25th Amendment. The second way is something that will eventually happen to all of us.

An ambiguous setup is Biden drops out under threat of the 25th. I’m not sure how one can prove that other than the majority of his staff voluntarily admits it, which I don’t think they would.

There is a third obscure involuntary way.

All In Good Conscience

I rule that option out.

How Close Are We to the 25th Amendment Approach?

You could debate the exact order, but right now we’re about half way up this ladder,” says Nate Silver.

Much of 1-7 is well underway but desperation still clings.

How Long Has This Been Going On?

For those seeking a musical tribute: How Long Has This Been Going On?

The above version is from Ace.

Fact check on who first sang that: Originally written as a duet for Smarty in 1927, the song was later introduced in the 1928 musical Rosalie by Bobbe Arnst as Mary O’Brien. Adele Astaire and Jack Buchanan originally sang the song to describe the excitement of a first kiss.

The answer to the above question is at least three years and possibly much longer.

The question at hand now: How much longer can this possibly go on?

Timing

On July 1, I commented The DNC May Nominate Biden a Month Early to Stop Replacement Calls

The Democratic National Convention is August 19-22. Well who cares about that? We may find out on July 21 when the rules committee meets.

The DNC is meeting early to ensure the nominee is set by Ohio’s Aug. 7 deadline.

Q: Why speed it up further?
A: To make Biden the official presidential nominee and Kamala Harris the official VP nominee ASAP.

Q: OK, but what does that do?
A: Short answer, lots. Long answer below.

What Happens Then?

Please consider What happens if a presidential candidate dies or steps down?

If it happens before the nominating conventions, the assembled delegates at the conventions will select the new nominee from among other candidates or potential new entries into the race. If, for example, Barack Obama had died in advance of the 2008 convention, Hilary Clinton, John Edwards, and the rest of the Democratic primary field would have worked to curry favor from various delegates prior to the official nomination. Delegates would have then voted, and a new nominee would have been announced. The same process would have occurred had Obama simply dropped out of the race.

If the death comes after the candidate has been officially nominated, though, the two major parties have different rules for selecting a new candidate:

In the Democratic Party “the members of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) choose the new nominee during a special session called by the chair. Per the Task Force’s explainer, “The DNC chair is required to consult with Democratic congressional leadership and the Democratic Governors Association, and then reports to DNC members who choose.”

The Democrats actually engaged in this process in 1972, when vice presidential nominee Thomas Eagleton withdrew from the race, and was replaced by Sargent Shriver after a vote from the DNC.

The Republican Party, meanwhile, vests the power to choose a new nominee with the Republican National Committee (RNC). As the explainer lays out, “members would vote as part of their state delegation under the same vote distribution used for the convention itself, and delegation members could divide their votes if they did not agree. Alternatively, the Republicans could reconvene the national convention.”

It gets messier after ballots are printed and someone dies or is stopped out voluntarily or involuntarily shortly before the election.

But it’s not as bad as it seems. Voters cast their ballots not for a specific candidate but for a slate of electors pledged to that candidate through the electoral college.

The slate would not vote for a dead person or someone who is not running no matter what the cause. But this would be very confusing to the public.

This appears to be Biden’s handler’s battle cry,

Hang On Sloopy

At a minimum, Biden will try to hang on until July 21. That’s only 13 days from now.

If Biden resigns after the DNC makes it official, even if that’s before the convention, it kills any chance of an open convention.

Then if Biden drops out, the DNC will “choose the new nominee during a special session called by the chair.”

Forget about this nonsense “The DNC chair is required to consult with Democratic congressional leadership and the Democratic Governors Association.”

Consult? So what? The DNC will consult, then it will do what it wants.

Q: What’s that?
A: The obvious: nominate Kamala Harris

I do not believe Biden will last until the election.

If so, the sooner Democrats can dump him the better, with one important exception. The DNC wants to control the process rather than have an open convention free-for-all.

Look for an official nomination announcement on July 21, 22, or 23. My guess is Biden becomes the official nominee on July 22, two weeks from today.

Then sometime before the convention, look for Biden to “voluntarily” quit (perhaps told to quit or else face the 25th amendment) sometime between July 22 and Ohio’s August 7 deadline.

As long as I am going out on a limb, let’s go further. Look for Biden to be off the ticket sometime between August 1-5, replaced by Kamala Harris. This conveniently resolves any potential issue with Ohio and allows (forces) the convention to get excited over Kamala.

The liberal media wants an open convention for obvious reasons (excitement, big party). And the media generally does not want Kamela. This is the ongoing battle right now.

There’s quite a bit of speculation here so let’s see.

Regardless …

The Democrats Got Their Dream Wish, Now They Have to Live With It

That dream is about to morph into Kamala, one way or another, sooner or later.

The sooner it happens, the more time Democrats have to adjust. But the DNC cannot let that happen too soon or it leads to an open convention.

I think Trump might not be very excited about the prospect of debating Kamala Harris. Though I’m not a R or D supporter due to their dollar debasing ways, she seems like the type to call out his bluff and bluster, though again, he could criticize the Democrats ways, but wait, the Republicans do the same thing. Trump certainly isn’t conservative. He proudly signed the printed money stimulus checks that fueled inflation. Funny because Biden is said to now be the only candidate that can lose to Trump, but if Harris runs, suddenly, Trump is the only one that can lose to her, which is maybe what the Democrats perceive and why this sudden turn away from Biden.

If the Ds had their convention at the Chicago United Center a couple of weeks ago instead of the debate, then they could have nominated Mick and Keith who were already there and are a year younger than FJB. The Illinois Secretary of State could help with the IDs in exchange for loaded $hoeboxes.

Biden is sharp like the edge of town. Believe me. People are saying he’s very sharp. I’m not so sure. He started taking his clothes off at our last debate. Joe’s not all there. Poopie pants Joe – that’s what I call him – and his scant bladder control makes his verbal diarrhea seem not that bad. He’s in bad shape. His wife should be more like Melania. Hot.

Most of the people arguing for Biden to leave the race remain blissfully unaware that he DID have that cognitive test and passed with flying colors. He got his “Ronnie Johnson” letter dated Feb 28, and the Parkinson’s doctor, well, if you don’t care to learn why he was in the WH, then you can choose to remain ignorant of the facts, that’s enough spoon-feeding for one day

Assuming the DNC wants Kamala Harris as POTUS and avoid an open convention, invoking 25A makes no sense now. Kamala would not risk her own nomination as POTUS in an open convention if she can get the nomination risk free following the DNC script.

Pretty simple solution, Joe. Trust but verify, right? So take the damn cognitive test. If he is SO sharp, he should even make a wager of it. Tell Trump “yeah,. I’ll take your test…I’ll even do it at 10pm and you can drug test me to make sure I’m clean! If I pass, then you drop out of the race. Deal?” That would put Trump in a tight spot. The only problem is, we KNOW Joe can’t pass it – and therefore, should NOT be president right now. He needs to resign office and let Camel Toe take over. QED

We are in amazing times when the NY Times editorial board excoriates President Biden so thoroughly as in this editorial. Biden’s candidacy for a 2nd term seems to be at an end. Let the Dem brouhaha for his replacement commence!

The Democratic Party Must Speak the Plain Truth to the President
July 8, 2024, 5:26 p.m. ET
By The Editorial Board

For voters who held out hope that President Biden’s failure to communicate during last month’s debate was an aberration, the intervening days have offered little comfort.

Donald Trump’s candidacy for a second term poses a grave threat to American democracy. Mr. Biden, instead of campaigning vigorously to disprove doubts and demonstrate that he can beat Mr. Trump, has maintained a scripted and controlled schedule of public appearances. He has largely avoided taking questions from voters or journalists — the kinds of interactions that reveal his limitations and caused him so much trouble on the debate stage. And when he has cast aside his teleprompter, most notably during a 22-minute interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos on Friday, he has continued to appear as a man in decline.

The president, elected in 2020 as an antidote to Mr. Trump’s malfeasance and mendacity, is now trying to defy reality. For more than a year, voters have made it unquestionably clear in surveys and interviews that they harbor significant doubts about Mr. Biden’s physical and mental fitness for office. Mr. Biden has disregarded the concerns of those voters — his fellow citizens — and put the country at significant risk by continuing to insist that he is the best Democrat to defeat Mr. Trump.

Since his feeble debate performance, multiple polls have shown that both Mr. Biden’s approval rating and his chance of beating Mr. Trump have markedly dropped from their already shaky levels. In response, he has adopted a favorite theme of the floundering politician, insisting that the polls are wrong in showing that his presidency is historically unpopular.

Fixed a few things I see differently JoJo:

> Mr Biden’s inability of campaigning vigorously, to disprove any doubts about his inabilities, has more than demonstrated His Inabilities to beat Mr. Trump.

> Biden has oddly maintained a scripted and controlled schedule of public appearances, for someone trying to send a message of competence in their ability’s.

> Mr Biden has also largely avoided taking questions from voters or journalists. Yet another sharp contrast, of somebody with confidence and vigor.

> For more than a year, voters have made it unquestionably clear in surveys and interviews that they harbor significant doubts about Mr. Biden’s physical and mental fitness for office. Mr. Biden has disregarded the concerns of those voters.

Mish, did you recently (as in today) change something about how ads are served on the site?

Like most, I run an ad blocker (adblock plus on Firefox). Normally it blocked annoying popup ads. But suddenly late this afternoon I am getting 2 pop up ads (one on left and one on right side) floating over the main text and the comments section. This is different from the tiny ads that are normally embedded and unobtrusive.

I’ve restarted Firefox several times and adblock plus is up to date but the are still there and if you try and close the floating window ads you get redirected to other sites.

To answer your question in a previous thread, my parent’s place was in North Palm Beach on the intercoastal. A year and a half ago they were getting serious people offering to buy it for all cash. They didn’t want to sell because they couldn’t imagine living elsewhere but finally at 101 years of age they couldn’t take care of themselves anymore. They sold just to get it out of their hair and moved to Texas to be close to family.

Wow, congrats on them living to 101! My parents are late 80s and still living in the house I grew up in on a 1 acre lot a few miles outside a small city (50K). They hope to remain there for the rest of their lives.

I imagine all cash offers on intercoastal water would have been pretty high values indeed because waterfront here always commands high dollar. Surprised it dropped off so much unless it was because those earlier amounts were due to people fleeing lockdowns in NY/Boston etc.

Apropos article here. I hope you’re right Carville!

James Carville: Biden Won’t Win. Democrats Need a Plan. Here’s One.

July 8, 2024,

By James Carville

Mark my words: Joe Biden is going to be out of the 2024 presidential race. Whether he is ready to admit it or not. His pleas on Monday to congressional Democrats for support will not unite the party behind him. Mr. Biden says he’s staying in the race, but it’s only a matter of time before Democratic pressure and public and private polling lead him to exit the race. The jig is up, and the sooner Mr. Biden and Democratic leaders accept this, the better. We need to move forward.

But it can’t be by anointing Vice President Kamala Harris or anyone else as the presumptive Democratic nominee. We’ve got to do it out in the open — the exact opposite of what Donald Trump wants us to do.

For the first time in his life, Mr. Trump is praying. To win the White House and increase his chances of avoiding an orange jumpsuit, he needs Democrats to make the wrong moves in the coming days — namely, to appear to rig the nomination for a fading president or the sitting vice president or some other heir apparent. He needs to be able to type ALL CAPS posts about power brokers and big donors putting the fix in. He needs, in other words, for Democrats to blow it.

We’re not going to do that.

We’re going to nominate a new ticket in a highly democratic and novel way, not in the backrooms of Washington, D.C., or Chicago.

Before the debate debacle, I was predicting something major would conveniently happen that would cause Americans to rally around Biden.

Remember Bush’s poll numbers after 9/11?

“What if” another 9/11 happened soon? Or a direct military confrontation with China or Russia?

Biden’s numbers would go from the 30s to the 50s. Just enough to push his corpse over the line.

A war with either Russia or China is a war that the US cannot win. At best it will be a phoney war with lots of chest beatings but if say a warship or worse an entire aircraft carrier group is sunk then how will the response be? And even in a phoney war the US still loses as no more essential rare earths from China, a collapse of the stock market and an instant depression.

I wanted to chime in to remind that it’s Biden’s own stupid fault that we have a VP as weak as Kamala. Biden said on live television during a 2020 debate that his VP was going to be a black woman and you damn well know they couldn’t walk that back.

So, Biden severely limited his VP choices by impulsively blurting something out during the debate. Dr. Jill was extremely against Kamala because Kamala went after ol’ Joe so hard in the democratic primary debates. Calling him out on his anti-bussing stance, among other things.

He will stay in the race till the end. He’s not gonna cap 60 years in government with a one-term failed presidency. And he cant win a second term if he doesnt run. And only 2-term presidents are seen by history as “successes.” And frankly, if the people want Trump instead, Im sure Biden will just say “they got what they deserved,” when little Mussolini turns the country upside down.

There’s so much evidence of Joe getting kickbacks from Burisma that if he were a Republican he would have been impeached and convicted.

The longer Joe stays in, the less time the replacement needs to fend off the arrows.

Of course the DNC wants to control the outcome, and since Kamala has no chance against Trump, I still expect the one person who can say they beat Trump in the popular vote to magically reappear, especially since she already has her campaign paraphernalia ready.

Regardless, as the French are demonstrating, neither side will accept the results, which means massive civil unrest.

Don’t assume she has no chance against Trump. she only has to claw her way up to the margin of fraud.

Why did Trump call Georgia saying “Find me ten thousand votes.”? You don’t think that was an attempt at fraud? Plus, Harris is one of the best opponents against Trump, though both the Ds and Rs have been bad for this country.

In my view it doesn’t matter if House Plant Potato Man stays in or drops out. Trump wins regardless (that’s not an endorsement either). It’s always “the economy stupid”, and the economy is not good. If the economy were roaring with low inflation I think Trump would probably lose despite Biden’s clear impairment. Screwing with people’s pocketbook is a sure fire way to get yourself voted. The relevant question is, how will Trump handle an economy on the verge of or already in recession? How will Trump tame inflation?

he will pivot HARD away from green energy/fraud, and unleash cheap US hydrocarbons + tax incentives to encourage domestic re-industrialization.

the world’s productive capital will flood into the US. the US will enjoy job creation + economic expansion at a scale not seen since the 1950’s/WW2.

“by the way, I’m proud to be, as I said, the first vice president, first black woman… to serve with a black president.”
Joe Biden

Congress cannot remove the president. Only the White House staff, secretaries, and cabinet can remove a president. Every such person is a carefully selected boot licker.

Biden’s elected delegates who hold a 90% majority must vote for him on the first ballot at the Democratic Convention.

Biden cannot be declared insane or inane unless he takes a mental competency test. Jill won’t allow that. No neurologist nor psychiatrist will be allowed to examine Joe Biden. Professional medical ethics prohibit diagnosis without a personal examination.

Many Democrats will vote for dementia Joe. I recall one Democrat who declared he would vote for Robert Kennedy as he viewed the televised X-ray of a bullet lodged in Kennedy’s brain.

Congress can remove a President, for ANY reason. If the House says he should be impeached for whatever reason, they can impeach him with that mechanism. The definition of an impeachable offense is whatever the House says is an impeachable offense. It doesn’t need to be a broken law. If the Senate concurs, he’d be gone. I’m not predicting this (it won’t happen), but you know… AcTuAlLy.

Next, if Harris is on board with the 25th, then it just takes 1/2 the Secs + her. They don’t need a cognitive exam, they just need to state he’s not fit to serve (ie, they don’t need to prove or even declare he’s “insane”). If Biden “appeals,” the appeal is to Congress and they sort it out with a vote. If Congress agrees with Harris & the Secs, Biden is out via 25th. I think there’s a chance this will happen, *after* the nomination is officially conveyed to Biden/Harris. But the pressure on Jill to resign her Presidency will probably be enough once they demonstrate to her that they have the votes for the 25th, so she’ll likely accept her husband’s defeat at that point to spare him the 25th.

Joe isn’t dropping out of the race unless he drops dead. The threat of invoking the 25th amendment won’t make a difference. Invoking the 25th amendment would be a lot worse politically than standing behind him. Also, Kamala isn’t liked. Jill is making the decision as Joe doesn’t even know who or where he is the majority of the time.

Yep, now that I know the rules for the Democrats better, I agree with your analysis. I predicted earlier this year that Biden wasn’t going to be on the ballot in November, and you laid out a plausible timeline for that happening. And put to bed the Ohio problem – the voters are voting for electors, not a candidate (wish more people understood that, and the fact that we have 51 presidential elections going on in November and not just one).

And Cackling Kamala as the nominee? That’s a joke. Even the Democrats don’t want her, as shown in 2019-2020. But hey, it’s “historic” isn’t it? Second part of my prediction was RFK Jr getting electoral votes, and that could happen with Harris as the nominee. Third part of my prediction was Trump winning. I think the powers that shouldn’t be are going to let that happen, now that he’s starting to sound more like George W Bush.

Kamala isn’t going to consider the 25th until her and Biden are the official nominees.

Why would she want an open convention? She’s a lock on replacing Biden as long as she waits until her and Joe are official. So she will. And then Joe starts feeling the 25th pressure.

Biden has no idea what day it is. He likes the attention and the trips to the ice cream shop like a child would. In a way, I feel bad for him. It’s one thing to rightfully get pissed at a leader who makes poor policy choices because he’s a fool, it’s quite another thing to get angry at a leader who’s clearly cognitively impaired. It’s the equivalent of electing a chimp as president and then getting pissed because the chimp flings it’s shit at passers-by and swings from the White House chandeliers all day. What did the electorate expect?

That isn’t an endorsement of House Plant Potato Man either.

One thing for certain Joe Biden is unable to hide in his basement to avoid scrutiny.
He has to appear in the public venue to make his case.
The longer this persists the longer general public gets to meet the real Joe Biden.
Biden fatigue going to set in really really quickly.

People will be covering their eyes and turning off the sound to avoid seeing or having to listen to him. They will come to think, how on earth did I ever support that creature.

I disagree. It’s now the basement strategy on steroids. He called in to MSNBC this morning. I don’t think he will do another interview on camera. He cannot answer questions without a cheat sheet. Too risky to show him on video.

I do have my doubts that it is Bidens own voice we hear when he is getting taped, more likely an AI version.
However he has to overcome peoples doubts and that can only get accomplished with live action. Press and enough Dems at high levels want him gone. He has lost the free cloaking device press had offered over past 4 years.

45% of voters would vote for a cabbage as long as it has a (D) next to its name. Cabbage in the basement, cabbage at a podium . does it really even matter?

Even people who vote for Cabbages have to get eats.
The issues are large and Biden has no answers.
Fact of matter whole Dem party has no answers.
Trump will win on pocketbook issues.
Working minorities do not care about much of anything as long as they can Feed and House their family.
All the Dems have done is hurt the people who put them into office.
These people do not forgive or forget so easily. They do not like being taken for granted.
