Fact Check on Trump’s Claim “We Don’t Do Much Business with Canada”

“We don’t do much business with Canada from our standpoint, they do a lot of business with us.”

Import/Export data from the Census Department, chart by Mish

Trump is woefully ignorant about largest US trade partners.

Here is a Video Clip of Trump’s Claim Regarding Canada.

Let’s now discuss the fact.

Total Trade (Imports and Exports)

  • Mexico: 1.423 Trillion
  • Canada: 762 Billion
  • China: 583 Billion

US imports and Exports – Goods Only – China, Canada, Mexico, EU, Vietnam

Import/Export data from the Census Department, chart by Mish

In terms of US exports, Canada is #1. Canada buys more US goods than the entirety of the EU.

The US goods balance of trade with Vietnam is -124 Billion. Canada is is a mere -64 billion.

Yet, Trump has a 10 percent tariff on Vietnam and higher on Canada.

US Balance of Trade – Goods Only 10 Select Countries Plus EU

Trade Balance data from the Census Department, chart by Mish

As a nation, there are eight countries that have a higher trade deficit with the US than Canada.

Grok AI

Trump’s claim that the U.S. doesn’t do much business with Canada is misleading. In 2024, U.S.-Canada goods trade totaled $762.1 billion, with $349.4 billion in exports and $412.7 billion in imports, creating a $63.3 billion goods deficit.

However, a $31.7 billion services surplus in 2023 offsets this, showing a more balanced relationship. The trade supports millions of jobs, with $600 billion in goods crossing the border in the first three quarters of 2024.

Canada is the U.S.’s largest trading partner, contradicting the “not much business” claim. While some view the goods deficit as unfavorable, others see it as a normal part of economic integration.

Trump’s claim is not “misleading”. It’s a flat out lie or blatant economic stupidity.

Factoring in services, Canada barely has a surplus at all.

Ignoring oil, which the US needs, and factoring in services, the US has a big trade surplus with Canada.

Reciprocal Tariffs

Reader: “Tariffs are reciprocal. All Canada has to do is to lower the tariffs they charge the US to what they want the US to charge them.”

Me: USMCA IS reciprocal right now. In extremely minor instances where it isn’t, TRUMP negotiated the deal.

Please read over and over Cheese Was a “Key Achievement” of Trump’s USMCA Trade Agreement

The above post contains over a dozen instances in which Trump bragged what a great deal.

It was such a great deal that Trump thanked Mexico and Canada. Notably USMCA is “Good for everybody – Farmers, Manufacturers, Energy, Unions – tremendous support. Importantly, we will finally end our Country’s worst Trade Deal, NAFTA!”

Good deal or not (and I think it was a very good deal for the US), the fact of the matter is Trump has no legitimate right to unilaterally break a deal ratified by the Senate 89-10.

Excluding Oil, the US Has a Trade Surplus with Canada Every Year Since 2008

Please note that Excluding Oil, the US Has a Trade Surplus with Canada Every Year Since 2008

Let’s do a fact check on Trump’s Canada claims.

On February 2, 2025 I commented on Trump’s claim “We Have All the Oil We Need”

By volume, we are reasonably close. But by grades of oil US refiners need, we aren’t. Here are the details.

It’s impossible to overstate the gross lie or total ignorance inherent in Trump’s preposterous claim about trade with Canada.

If the balance of payments is the goal, all the US has to do is stop buying so frigging much oil from Canada. Presto – balanced in 1 day. Everything else can carry one.

Because American refineries require a certain composition of oil, it is available from Venezuela. All they have to do is top buying as much oil from Canada and buy the balance from Venezuela. Then Canada-US trade will be in perfect balance, and Trump can tariff Venezuelan products as much as needed to get that balance perfect too.

It is really not difficult to achieve.

In the meantime, because of threats to Canada, they should put a 4% export tax on all energy products to pay for new pipelines right across the country. These are needed because the US has shown itself to be an unreliable partner and contracts with them are untrustworthy. The expense of building these safety nets should be paid for by the US. We were happy to sell them oil before but now even high level written contracts are unreliable. Four % is enough to pay for one pipeline per 2 years.

We shift steel production from US customers to Canadian pipeline builders. No problem. Send the bill south.

Sounds good but its not possible for several reasons.

1. Trump is sanctioning Venezuelan oil. He ordered Chevron to stop producing/buying oil in Venezuela.

2. Venezuela’s oil production has dropped from 3 mbpd in 2000 to 0.8 mbpd today. They export about 0.5 mbpd.

3. There is no way to get Venezuelan oil from the gulf to the US midwest where it’s needed.

4. The US imports around 6.5 mbpd of heavy oil for it’s refineries. 4.5 mbpd comes from Canada. Even if we got every drop of Venezuelan exports that is only 0.5 mbpd.

5. 26 US refineries in the midwest PADD 2 region rely exclusively on 3 mbpd of Canadian oil.

6. Canada sells oil to us at a $10-$15 discount from WTI prices. Replacing it with anything else is costly

Hope that helps.

Canada takes more of our exports than any other country. They sell us a lot of raw materials and we sell them a lot of finished goods. (by the way, it’s moronic to put tariffs on raw materials that we need to import.)

Canada buys $350 billion from us. Divide by 40 million population. $8750 per Canadian. A lot of that is retail purchased by individuals.

We buy $413 billion from them. Divide by 340 million. $1215 per American. But mostly raw materials. Not retail.

Canadians are pissed off at Trump and are refusing to buy US products. I wonder how much of that $8750/person will disappear?

Even if we strike a new deal with Canada, I doubt it will change much from the old deal. And many Canadians will stay pissed and refuse to buy our stuff while Trump is still in office.

Thanks. There are a lot of ways to analyze the trade between our two countries.

On a per capita basis, Canadians buy 7x more from the US than Americans buy from Canada. Using Trumpian logic, that means that every Canadian is subsidizing America to the tune of $7535 ($8750-$1215) per year.

Again, using Trump’s logic, Canadians should demand that Trump send each of them $7535, in order to even things out.

Trump is a loser in spades

15 common traits of losers

1) Staying in victimhood
Without exception, every single loser has the habit of relentlessly playing the victim.
It’s true, life can be cruel, and oftentimes it will feel unfair. Losers believe with every fiber of their being that life is against them and they are at life’s mercy.
2) Always giving up
We already established that life can be freaking hard sometimes.
Turns out, life is hard for everybody. What makes the difference between a successful person and a loser is that the former never gives up.
Failure is a bitter lesson, and it’s okay to momentarily feel discouraged when you fail something.
However, it’s important to realize that even the most successful people have failed multiple times!
3) Negativity all around
Negativity brings you down, it’s no secret.
Most people do not realize the scope of their own negativity, though.
Our society is so accustomed to complaining, that we often don’t even notice it anymore.
4) Being self-absorbed
Some “successful” people are actually total losers. You wanna know why?
Because they couldn’t give a damn about anyone but themselves.
5) Arrogance
Arrogance is not a cute trait.
The thing is, there is a fine line between healthy self-esteem and arrogance.
You see, self-esteem means knowing that no matter what other people do or say, you are inherently worthy and good as you are.
Arrogance, on the other hand, means that you believe you’re better than everyone else.
Truth be told, arrogance is in reality the complete opposite of self-esteem. Arrogance is a like a mask, concealing insecurity with feigned confidence.
When you are truly confident about your achievements, you don’t have anything to prove.
6) A lack of self-awareness
If you are worried that you might be a loser, chances are you’re not.
Well, losers have a total lack of self-awareness, and the idea that they might have to work on themselves doesn’t even cross their minds.
Losers are unable to analyze their own behavior and qualities because they wholeheartedly believe there is nothing wrong with them.
7) Narrow-mindedness
“I am right and everybody else is wrong, I don’t even want to listen to what you have to say because I’m right anyway.”
Does that sound like someone you know?
Turns out losers have a tendency to believe that there is no such thing as a grey area.
When they have an opinion on something, every other opinion is simply wrong.
You see, in reality most situations have very different points of view with respectfully warranted opinions.
When someone does not have the ability to stay neutral, listen to an opposing view and accept that their opinion is just as valid as theirs, even though it’s different, they’re a loser.
8) Vanity
We talked about appearance earlier. While sure, the way you look plays a part in being deemed “successful”, there is a fine line between loving yourself and really LOVING yourself.
9) Gossiping
It’s crazy how normal gossip is in daily conversations.
However, there is quite a big downside to this popular form of entertainment.
No matter if the talk is behind someones back, essentially gossiping is just bullying.
Only losers gain confidence out of tearing other’s down.
10) Lack of integrity
Successful people have a set of values and a moral compass that they don’t like to stray from.
A loser, on the other hand, has a flexible moral compass that he can adjust to his needs at the time.
They have to forsake their values in order to gain fame or wealth? No problem!
You see, truly successful people hold fast to their values and moral standards.
If you are prepared to forsake whatever you believe in to “succeed”, you will never be respected by other people.
11) Not respecting yourself or others
We all know it’s rude to disrespect other people, especially when talking to them, but do you wanna know what makes you the biggest loser?
Disrespecting yourself. Without self-respect you will never be on the winning end of life, trust me.
12) Lack of purpose
It probably sounds very logical when I say that losers tend to not have a proper purpose in their life.
13) Being spoiled
Nobody likes a spoiled brat. As much as spoiled brats might have tons of money or opportunities, they will always be losers.
14) Not helping those in need
It doesn’t matter what you are up to, when you pass someone who is in need, a good person will always stop and help.
Losers lack the empathy needed to engage in this kind of behavior, so they will look the other way when something bad happens.
This could be a kid crying alone in public because they lost their parents, a person injured, an old lady trying to cross the street, a girl trying to get away from a creepy stranger, you name it.
15) Avoiding responsibility
Losers don’t like to take responsibility for their actions. Instead, they put the blame on others and try to get out of trouble by whatever means necessary.
You see, noble people know that their actions have consequences and they don’t shy away from taking responsibility for mistakes they’ve made.
What losers don’t understand is that taking the blame for mistakes actually makes others respect you more than if you try to look innocent.

According to Trump the “deal” isn’t signed and going to take a few weeks but there are already major sticking points.

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/cn91dxzv4pnt

The politics around farming has been a particularly sensitive issue for the UK government, with tractor protests clogging up Whitehall in recent months.

One of the big demands the US wanted from a deal was access to the UK market for American farmers.

But British farmers are worried this would undercut them if products produced to lower standards are allowed to be imported.

US Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said at the Oval Office press conference that this deal “is going to exponentially increase our beef exports”.

The deal includes a tariff free quota of 13,000 metric tonnes of beef. So US farmers will have access to the UK, and UK farmers will have access to the US.

But the UK government insists there is no reduction in food standards in the deal. So hormone treated beef or chlorinated chicken will not be allowed.

The reaction of UK farmers will be one government ministers and advisers are watching closely.

But at least it got the stock market up and I sold calls into the rally. Will buy them back cheap when the market realizes Trump’s full of hot air.

Once the blanket interdiction is raised that doesn’t mean that all European norms fall. It means that American beef and grain will have to match European norms to be able to sell there so they will modify their practices to do so. They already do it for other markets and they can do it for Europe. The blanket ban kept them from doing that. Now the US also has blanket bans that will have to fall also. Try getting French or Italian dry-cured sausage through US customs. You get a dog sniffing you out. I would love to see people in the US able to buy those masterpieces of cuisine and they should.

Trump is not “woefully” ignorant; Trump is “willingly” ignorant. Trump has no interest in learning actual facts as he knows his base believes Trump over actual data. We need to stop guessing what Trump is thinking, what he meant or assigning some kind of policy position to his decisions. A friend actually said, “I think Trump really cares about our nation’s health” and I wanted to puke. Trump is a narcissist and successful con man. Nothing more.

Yep. 100 days and Trump is doing a lot to change world trade. No doubt about it! And the US is going to take it on the chin.

US companies cannot provide forward guidance due to the uncertainty. They are attempting to estimate their losses from tariffs. GM $5 billion; Ford $1.5 billion; NVidia $5.5 billion; MSoft $1 billion, etc

Regarding this amazing “deal”. We already have a trade surplus with the UK. They are not a very big trading partner of ours. The agreement is just a couple of items, with the bulk of items “still to be negotiated”. It’s much ado about nothing, all for Trump face saving and publicity. And you lap it up, and think it’s a big deal because Trump said so.

OK, what does this mean?

Trump says the U.S. does not care about accessing foreign markets. “We don’t care about their market. They want a piece of our market,” he says.

The “deal” will be naming the “price that people are going to have to pay to shop in the United States.”

“Think of us as a super luxury store, a store that has the goods,” he says. “You’re going to come and you’re going to pay a price, and we’re going to give you a very good price, we’re going to make very good deals, and in some cases, we’ll adjust, but that’s where it is.”

“So we can just sit down and I’ll do this at some point over the next two weeks.. We’re going to sit down, and we’re going to put very fair numbers down, and we’re going to say, here’s what this country, what we want. And congratulations, we have a deal…”

“And they’ll either say ‘Great,’ and they’ll start shopping, or they’ll say, ‘Not good. We’re not going to do it,’” he says. “I said, that’s okay. You don’t have to shop.”

NAFTA still gave Canada too many sweets for free. Had to to get it through Congress then and Trudeau hadn’t had time to show his true colors or colours as you spell it. Now it’s different. If Canadians do not want to travel to the US because they don’t like us few people would care and certainly not enough to influence policy. We drop all our tariffs on Canada and they drop all their tariffs on the US. Why is that so difficult to understand?

I would be fine with no tariffs at all. (Though I don’t get to decide.)

Though a zero tariff world would decimate a lot of US manufacturing, as lower cost countries would wipe out a lot of our manufacturing.

Our trade with Canada was almost tariff free anyway thanks to those trade agreements.

1. How about you list what “sweets” NAFTA gave Canada. I would like to see them.

2. Regarding tariffs : The US had more than Canada. Though both were very low. Till now.

The level of economic illiteracy exhibited by Trump and his team is jaw dropping. Or is it simply dishonesty. Mish is doing great work bringing some honesty and realism to the discussion. Thank you, Mish.

As for “Canada needing the US”….what Canada sells, China wants, especially oil, which Canada stupidly agrees to provide to the US with guaranteed access at discounted prices. What Canada wants, China provides, with better pricing. The solution to Canada’s “surplus” with the US is very simple: build the infrastructure to re-direct the energy being shipped south, from the US to Asia. No more US trade “deficits” with Canada. The US can buy its oil on international markets at market prices. Trump will be ecstatic with his big “win”.

Time for Canada to join BRICS, where the future lies.

Trump has no legitimate right to unilaterally break a deal ratified by the Senate 89-10″

This only plays with the audience that believes in and cares to enforce the Separation of Powers. Trump has clearly eliminated such separation, witness all the things he is doing that he isn’t allowed to do by various inconvenient documents like the Constitution, or inconvenient entities like the judicial system. He is just doing these things because he knows there is nobody in Congress or SCOTUS who has the moral fiber to oppose him. You know that’s a fact, it’s proven every day by Trump’s actions.

Which is why when the conflagration goes full blown the blame will be 100% on Trump & the GOP. I am not even sure if democrats exist anymore, haven’t heard a single thing out of them and maybe that’s strategic to let Trumpco hang themselves with their own rope.

Christmas time will be very interesting in America this year.

Mish, we might EITHER CHERRY PICK EVERYTHING or not. You are excluding OIL which is similar to the nonsense that the FED uses to concoct their Inflation rates.

Just sayin’.

We should include EVERYTHING that is consumed by America the country and Americans – – the citizens. I am fed up with being sick and tired of the Numbers GAMING.

Sure, I do comprehend your points here and they are really cool to read and to examine the TRUMPCO barrage of BS which is complete with nary a fact.

Otherwise, all that we have on a constant basis are concocted Numbers, driving MADE-UP NARRATIVES, leading to confusion and anger from those of us who try to make sense of it all.

Canada’s growth is as closely correlated with the overall US economy as growth in Texas or California. In fact, Canada is more closely correlated with overall US activity than activity in many US states. Only an amazingly uninformed person would say the things that come out of Trump’s mouth. Watching Mark Carney’s body language in the Oval Office while Trump talked was revealing. The rest of the world clearly thinks we have elected a madman as president.

Canada’s tariffs were similar to US tariffs till recently. Now they are much less than US tariffs. Maybe you should list tariffs from both Canada and The US please. For comparison purposes.

Zero tariffs for each country. That would make me happy as long as we can keep transshipment from happening.

PapaDave

Agreed. No tariffs world wide. Then there is no need to worry about trans shipment. Though most US manufacturing would be decimated as we cannot compete in many areas.

I’m looking for the stats that shows how reliant Canada is on the US vs how reliant the US is on Canada. It’s not even close. Canada needs the US way more than the US needs Canada. Some get lost in the weeds of what Trump said or how he said it instead of looking at how Trump is reshaping world trade in the favor of the United States.

The first major domino falls Thursday morning. Can’t wait to watch America win win and win some more.

It may me true. But show us the stats please. Or stop making such statements.

this is like in a regular military war where we say we hurt he other side more. doesn’t mean we’ll win, in terms of achieving objective, or that it will have been worth it.

say we get a good free trade deal with Cnada. Anyone think Canadians will be buying American goods at the same rate? I don’t. they’re pissed, no one likes to be arm twisted into doing something.
If Trump simply made his case objectively, with numbers, it may be a different story. But no, he has to accuse Canada and the world of pillaging and raping the US, to say tariffs go aay if Canada is the 51st state etc… he’s his own worst enemy. And ours.

oh please, it wasnt’ that bad. male boxers beating up females in the ring. . . not that i approve of this, don’t, but you’re talking one boxer and who really gives a crap. how does that impact my, or your life? are you a female boxer? do you know any female boxers?

border had been a disaster for decades, and Biden made it worse, for 4 years. now all of a sudden all of the problems in the US are because of a 4 year term that somehow saw the market hit all time highs and historically low unemployment, despite all those issues.

Trump is 10X worse.

what are you talking about?/ you had multiple opportunities to prove corruption and got diddly squat. there were congressional investigations run by Republicans that turned up NOTHING.

meanwhile Trump is OPENLY running the most corrupt administration in US history. These are FACTS, easily verifiable. He’s not even hiding it:

Majority owning a crypto firm which is being used to bribe him. Dubai used his firm for a $2B deal, making him millions of dollars.Vietnam, which is subject to tariffs, suddentlu greenlit a $1.5Billion Trump hotel project there. his family has dozens of projects in the works across the world in areas impacted by Trump’s decisions. And what you’re telling me he cares about hte good of the american people more than his own pocket??A company, Freight Technology, bought $20 million in Trump tokens and said it was to hopefully win favor pn tariffs.he’s regulating areas where he literally has billions at stake.he’s remakng te SEC to allow more crypto nonsense, and doing many pro-crypto things all the while having billions in a crypto firm!
5. His family opened an exclsive members only political club in Washington DC, with membership costing $500,000 which is openly marketing its main benefit as being able to hang out with Trump’s family.

How the F IS THIS NOT THE MOST CORRUPTION IN US GOVERNMENT? ?? seriously, i want an answer, what would Republicans have said and done if Hunter Biden advertised a new club where for $500,000 a year politically minded members could hang out with him and pitch them with ideas about US policy??

this is the sort of stuff Republcans were looking for with Bien and didn’t find, and this is just 100 days into it! The worst Hunter Biden did is use his name and connections to get jobs he wasnt’ qualified for. like every wayward son of famous politicians.

Trump is literally, in real time, using foreign and domestic policy to put billions in his pocket. and he’s not hiding it. Not a peep from Fox, or breitbart of the MAGA cult whose head would have exploded if Biden had done a tenth of this.

no, I do understand.

i completely agree we should NOT have trans women in sports. my point is this is a high emotion issue meant to distract from bigger and more important issues. I mean, how many trans women are there, and how many of them are competitive athletes?? it’s like .1% of .5% of the population. it’s a tiny issue impacting very little that the media blows up because they know it drives people nuts.

I also think Obama was good, better than his predecessor in any event. he was obviously smart, and ethical. i dodn’t agree with some of his policies, but he was a pretty steady hand, and Republican hated him for BS. remember the tan suit nonsense?? if he did one millionth of what Trump did, they’d die of cardiac events. Can you imagine if Obama had a majority interest in a crypto firm which handled a $2 Billin deal with Dubai? or hotel projects in parts of the world where we are actively negotiating deals (like Vietnam which just greenlit a $1.5B Trump hotel project)??
