Gasoline Prices Top $4 First Time Since Aug 2022, Diesel $0.36 from Record

The small price to pay keeps rising.

The national average price of gasoline topped $4.00 today for the first time since August 2022.

Gasoline prices are $1.04 from a month ago, up 34.7 percent.

The price of diesel is up $1.70 from a month ago, 44.4 percent. Diesel is only 36 cents from a new record high.

Small Price to Pay

Trump says this is a small price to pay for opening the strait that was open before he launched this idiotic war.

Wait a second. We need a fact check on that.

Sequence of Events

So, we are paying a huge price and we don’t even know if the strait will be open any time soon.

Trump says this was planned. That sounds like an obvious lie but perhaps it isn’t. If this was planned, it was by the imbeciles Trump surrounded himself with.

Well, that’s OK. Israel demanded this. Who is Trump to refuse?

Florida Sen. Rock Scott congratulated Trump for raising the costs of goods and services in the country because he believes Iran posed a greater threat to American lives than the skyrocketing costs of healthcare, food, and gas.

Iran can fairly quickly assemble ~ ten 15 kiloton atomic bombs according to Ted Postol of MIT. And they can do that even after being hit by a nuclear attack.

Iran will probably end up with a regularized fee structure for passage through the Strait – effectively extracting reparations for Trump’s illegal war.

Interestingly all paid for by the rest of the world since the US ships nothing through that strait.

I’ve said it many times, a whole lot of countries sitting idly by when it makes zero sense to be doing so. They will be paying for Irans re-construction, not the US or Israel.

What’s their alternative to “sitting idly by”? No one can “ open the strait” when ships can be targeted by missiles fired from hundreds of miles away.

Gasoline prices have now lots of upside potential. Even if the Middle East disruption keeps the global oil supply reduced by a moderate 10%, WTI can easily surge to $150 (assuming a reasonable global oil demand elasticity). Using the usual rule of thumb (gasoline prices go up 25 cents per $10 oil price), we will soon be looking at gasoline prices well over $5. So, let’s enjoy the presently low gasoline prices as long as they last.

Another possibility is that the US and Israel are just taking a break while they reload and rest their pilots and service their aircraft. This way they can gather data on Irans troop movements and listen to whatever command/control activities take place.

Israel has been taking land from and at war with their neighbors since Balfour in 1913, so, IMO this is unfortunately for the world at large only a short reprieve.

The US has to refinance 9-10 trillion of sovereign debt in 2026. Not only in the US, Israeli-Trump war hydrocarbon and oil by-product cost around the world around are skyrocketing. Countries are selling US debt to acquire dollars to offset the higher cost. Since 28 Feb, countries have been net sellers of 80-90 billion of US sovereign debt. This is a disastrous combination.

Iran’s National Security Committee has approved a bill that would impose fees on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the semi-official Fars news agency reported, citing a committee member. The bill, if it becomes law, would:

  • Impose a toll system in rials
  • Ban passage of US and Israeli vessels through the strait
  • Assert Iran’s sovereignty over the strategic waterway
  • Ban any country that imposes unilateral sanctions against Iran.

Oman is slated to help shape the legal framework, Fars said.

Went to grocery store this weekend, spent $200 on almost nothing and most of the stuff I bought was on “sale” to boot. Filled up wife’s car with fuel afterward, gas was $3.89/gallon. The guy behind me pulled up in a Silverado truck, looked very unhappy to be filling up at those prices.

I have friend in Australia, says gas there is now $6+/gallon and some stations running out of fuel.

The interesting thing is Trump can TACO but Iran can keep the Straits closed indefinitely, what then?

I pulled up to a station in my Honda Civic hybrid. Guy on the other side was driving a Ford Expedition. He looked on enviously as I filled up for $34 and he was still going at over $100. He asked me what my mpg were (50 mpg combined hwy/city). He said he was envious but needed the big car for his kids. There wasn’t anyone in the car and it was a Friday morning, so I’m sure he was on his way to work. He said he has 2 kids, teenagers. They would fit comfortably in my Civic. He spent a little over $124 to fill up. Probably for a weeks worth of commuting to work.

What was the price per gallon?

The Expedition has a 23 gallon tank (unless it was the Max). At 5/gallon it would be 115 from DEAD empty. So it must be the Max (27 gallons) and he must have been very close to dead empty.

At 5/gallon you wouldn’t even be putting in 7 gallons. So either your tank is ridiculously small or you weren’t close to empty when you were filling.

All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you:
Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and
Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT.
You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us.
Iran has been, essentially, decimated.

Stu, you forget that Trump’s COVID policies had decimated the economy. Oil costs actually went negative for a moment as everyone was unemployed or working from home. The fracking industry practically collapsed. When Biden took over and cranked up the economy again, fuel prices skyrocketed as the US couldn’t restart its obliterated fracking industry quickly enough. It took a full year and prices did peak very high. But Biden’s policies got prices back under control and down to a national average of $3.08 and heading south. There is no double standard. Trump obliterated the economy in his first term. Idiots voted for him again. And he’s in the process of obliterating the economy in his second term. But what can we do? We let people like you vote who are completely clueless to history and how the world really works.

It’s as if it’s ok but only when Biden did it, to your point. Half the time or more Trump never even gets a chance at success, as he is bashed from the get go, just because of his name.

He has done an awful lot of good, many obviously would agree. His poll numbers don’t reflect at all what is spewed about him, and in fact the Democrats are in the tank right now, and NYC is about to implode! It may not beat CA. I agree with that 100% by the way, as now is not the time for that, and not necessary at the moment. Once that was proven out, the plug was pulled.

I don’t blame a country with the ability to make all the parts, has cheap labor, and many live within short miles of one another, and wherever they need to be as well. Its early design was perfect for that, and China rightfully jumped on it.

You can’t just jump on new technology because it sound and looks good, and has a ton of money behind it by investors. Too many people take gas / oil for granted. Energy disruptions and higher prices force people to think about how they use energy, but people refuse and gripe. I remember in ~2004 when gas prices were high that people kept buying gas guzzling SUVs instead of sedans with good fuel economy. Nothing has changed in over 20 years.

Reply to  Six000MileYear

The time to buy a gas guzzler is when prices are high for a sustained period. The reason is that most people stop buying those vehicles and so they get offered at big discounts that make them worth driving.

For example if you drive 15K a year and buy a 20 MPG guzzler you use 750 gallons. If you you instead bought a 30 MPG car you’d use 500 gallons. 250 gallons a year difference at 4/gallon is 1000 bucks in gas cost. But if you buy the Guzzler for 5K less price than the non-guzzler it takes 5 years before it’s a bad deal to buy the guzzler.
