President Donald Trump took a swing at Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) after they called for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to be fired, dismissing both as “losers.”
“They’re terrible senators. One is gone, and the other should be gone,” Trump said in an interview with ABC News posted Wednesday. “What Murkowski says — she’s always against the Republicans anyway. And Tillis decided to drop out. So you know, he lost his voice once he did that.”

I think the difference has to do with consent and permission. When people tell you how you were supposed to live, they are taking away your consent. Like Slavery. How would it happen – peacefully like a ‘national divorce’ or not peacefully as something like a civil war? Red states and blue states seem like the logical split, but the true rift is urban/rural with strong blue cities in many red states. This is not new – do a Google search and look back at federal election results on a county level basis. Also, there are multiple initiatives where counties are looking to secede from their state and to join another (mostly red counties wanting to leave a blue state). For example, “New California” or “Six Californias,” Greater Idaho (eastern Oregon counties to join Idaho), and just this week I heard of some northwest Illinois counties wanting to join Iowa. Naturally, any of these movements being successful would be beyond a longshot, but there would be economic and electoral ramifications if any actually happened. So there would be multiple nexuses with this forum. I think it would be interesting to see focused comments from folks on this issue. @Mish – maybe an idea for a devoted post?

If he did not have his ID on him, if he was not being peaceful and if he was involved in an unlawful assembly, then technically he was breaking the law, although he probably would have been fine if he had not resisted the officers. There are videos of him being violent towards ICE and their vehicles in the days leading up to his death, he even broke a tail-light on a car in one. So I don’t buy the narrative that he was an angel. He looked like someone with seriously bad anger management issues. That being said, did he deserve to die? No, but sometimes actions have consequences, and sometimes they are fatal.

I seem to recall a story in history, going way back, about an English parliamentary session which got some sort of nickname because all the representatives thought it advisable to bring their swords to the chamber. Sometimes you do contemplate the possibility of getting into a fight. But if you are thinking of threatening to fight the police, you need to realize that they are apt to take you seriously. I think taking a gun along to that sort of gathering carries an implication. I’m not saying you shouldn’t do it: if a lot of people did it, the police would run away. But you should realize that you’re not fooling any more.
In reply to Flavia, I think the average self-protecting policeman might think it was leaving it a bit late to shoot, in that sort of tense situation, if you waited until he had pulled his gun.
Where I live, we had a situation a few years ago in which a cranky old ex-military policeman fired a shot to scare away a much bigger friend who he thought was making advances on his wife. The friend went to the local police station in a state of excitement, and told them all about it. They don’t seem to have had anyone in particular in charge: the fellow who was supposed to be in charge was apparently very weak. Anyway, the police charged out to this fellow’s house in the middle of the night, with guns and dogs. The wife was no longer there: she knew what her husband was like, and had gone to a neighbor’s place to wait for him to cool off. The police surrounded the place, and one daring fellow, a dog-handler, got too close and was shot. He was hit in the leg and bled to death. His heroic friends hid in the bushes. Eventually some sort of armored vehicle was brought in, and the old fellow was arrested. He was put on trial and did time for murder.
I attempted to argue, mostly in letters to the local newspaper, that the police were wrong to attack a private house with guns and dogs in the middle of the night. My letter on the subject did not get published. (I am something of an habitual letter-writer, and many of my letters do get published.) Not only were they not published, but they disappeared from the out-file on my computer. Apparently you’re not supposed to suggest that police attacks on private houses for no good reason are not acceptable.
So I don’t believe a lot of things about freedom of expression and individual rights. We live under criminals, who have apparently less and less reason to conceal their criminality. Each new generation has to learn this anew, because the schools, who are part of the system, make sure that they don’t find out as children.

I think you’re right. I don’t know as much about the American founding fathers as you probably do, but I think one of them said that the system they had set up would only last until the voters discovered that they could vote themselves benefits out of the public purse. That happened under Franklin Roosevelt if not before. Rapid technological development, which could not have been foreseen at the time your republic was founded, has helped to allow the system of plunder to keep going without destroying the producers as quickly as it did in previous systems of wholesale government theft.
Personally, I don’t find Trump as objectionable as all the cardboard cutouts, followers pretending to be leaders, that are usually voted in. Machiavelli thought that a ruler set up by the vulgar masses was usually better than a ruler set up by the oligarchs, because the vulgar masses only wanted to be left alone, and would respect the man they had set up, whereas the oligarchs wanted to be able to steal everything, and saw the man they had set up as their employee. Does that remind you of the people who set up Barack Obama and Joe Biden?
It isn’t simple. You Americans have benefitted from being so powerful and independent that you could spend a lot of time working out your internal quarrels. The English also benefited in a similar way by being on an island that too big to be easily invaded. In Europe, where everyone was surrounded by significantly big and dangerous neighbors, it was always necessary to have clear lines of command, with someone clearly in command. “Unity of command” is a military doctrine. In England, as in Japan, it was possible to gradually work out a constitution that limited the power of the government.
In the age of missiles, you don’t have that luxury any more.

Mish, can you tell me if links can be posted directly without going into a waiting for review section on your site. What I wrote was “Excerpt below from recent article” which it was a recent article since I just saw it today. In the article they link to a video clip from an X account and the CNN segment shows 2024-2025 polling. If you think those numbers are inverted now due to Minneapolis, then that would be an interesting development. And even if that should happen, the main point I was making was that this is going to be difficult time for the country over the next five years for all the reasons cited in the article, none of those concerns that people have are going to change in my opinion and will just be increased when AI starts to produce more economic insecurity.
