Let’s be honest. If they could poll people by IQ, you know how things would break down. Politically and socially, MAGA are the most simple of voters.
When I think about the handful of people I know who voted for Trump in 2024, they are all fundamentally simple on a social and political level. They don’t do nuance, they don’t do shades of grey, and they are very susceptible to propaganda and personal confirmation bias and unable to discern between what is significant or meaningful on a national level and what isn’t. They thrive on anecdotes. Statistics don’t mean anything to them. When they believe something will benefit them personally, they will find whatever argument tells them that they deserve to have it. People who are different than them are wrong because different means wrong, since everything they believe has to be right. Their cognitive grasp of reality ends at the tip of their nose.
I think that maybe you’re describing yourself, except that you think that to have gone further in school means that you are smarter. It ain’t so. All those hicks you despise may not know the things you know, but they do know things you don’t know.

Mish, there is a word for this called “schismogenesis”, originally coined by anthropologist Gregory Bateson. The word is used to describe a fascinating cultural phenomenon found among humans. It creates a way for a person to feel a level of superiority by identifying with the cultural values of their tribe over and against others. Once you have made your sense of self dependent upon your tribal values, the values themself are not as important as the tribe. The tribe comes first. I think that is a name that can be applied to all religion. It isn’t really an explanation, just a tag. But the way people claim to believe things that obviously aren’t true, or that we have no way of knowing about, to me demands observation and explanation.
This mightn’t be the right place to bring it up, but it seems to me that modern Western education qualifies as an official religion. All religions probably begin with some sort of need, and mightn’t be false to begin with, but they become false as they develop. Getting political power (as education now has) guarantees hubris, in which the religious leaders demand belief in increasingly unlikely propositions. The followers lap it up because doing so brings approval and status.

Can you provide any reading on that? I once read, a long time ago, a book named “Cows, Pigs, Wars & Witches,” by an American academic named Marvin Harris, who I saw described by ‘Time Magazine’ as “sometimes off-the-wall.” It didn’t go in much for theory, just described the various functions that are seemingly fulfilled by official religion in societies ranging from Hindu India to quite small tribal societies.

Soldiers and priests take charge of us, and exploit the people I call “honest men,” who live by more-or-less honest exchange according to the well-known laws of economics. (Adam Smith, who wrote the book on economics, didn’t mention that there are other ways of getting what you want from other people than honest exchange, and they are the use of force and the use of deception.)
Christianity and Islam appear to be torture cults, and I assume that they function well in terrorizing killer apes into subservience to large communities where there are no ties of kinship binding them together.
I don’t see ritual as the essence of religion. I think a religion is any set of ideas that is obviously false but that people seem to adhere to for some reason, usually social approval. I suggest that since the publication of Darwin’s book, education has gradually replaced Christianity as the State religion of Western civilization.

These people were young, smart and energetic, as their candidate was genuine. I actually reluctantly supported Trump in 2016, after Rand Paul dropped out and all we really had left was establishment hacks like Jeb Bush, and Sheldon Adelson Zio-whores like Rubio and Ted Cruz. The Texas GOP had been taken over by the pat Roberson Christian Right by 1994 and remains under their control to this day. Abortion and gay rights were the key issues then, but after 911 when all the Zio-wars started, subservience and allegiance to Israel totally dominated their interests. After 911, the Zio big money poured in and totally corrupted the Party, and I see no way the sane, truly conservatives have any chance of gaining control at any time in the near future.
The Christian Right in Texas did not initially support Trump. At our 2016 State Convention the delegates were 70-30% in favor of the phony Ted Cruz over Trump. After Trump won the nomination and the Adelson money poured in, a large majority of them became fanatical Trump supporters. It took me a couple of years after Trump became POTUS to finally accept that he was a fraud. I tried telling all my friends that we needed to take a different route, but there was no way you could reason with them. The big money had already integrated into the system, filtered down from the top to State and local leaders, all the way down to the precinct level, and since money talks, the leaders remained with Trump. If you understand the mechanics of politics, you go where the machine tells you to go, or you are kicked out and banned from any significant or even minor role. Money talks. That’s the way it works. Local Pro-Life, Pro-family pastors and leaders of organizations get paid off one way or the other, so they go support the new chosen leader also.The sheeple are controlled, and just go along, as most know very little other than mindless GOP party propaganda and talking points, and with Trump, they were manipulated into this cult like state of mindless subservience. I have read that some 80% of the country hates the regime.
