We Export 48 Million Barrels of Diesel per Month, Why Import from Russia?

Importing Russian diesel is illegal. There is no real need anyway.

Diesel Exports and Imports Latest Numbers

  • Exports: 48.7 million barrels
  • Imports: 4.3 million barrels
  • Net: 44.4 million barrels.

US Energy Information Agency data shows the US is exporting record amounts of diesel and record amounts of net diesel.

U.S. Diesel Trade Balance Summary (Mid-2026)

Trade MetricMonthly Volume (Barrels)Daily Equivalent (Barrels)Historic Peak
Diesel Exports48.7 Million~1.62 Million / day48.7 Million (Mid-2026)
Diesel Imports4.3 Million~0.14 Million / day14.6 Million (Early 2021)
Net Export Surplus44.4 Million~1.48 Million / dayHighest structural surplus on record

Trump’s Diesel Announcement

Truth Social: I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month of November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter. Additionally, based on the condition of their Diesel Refineries, Russia will then deliver, within a short period of time, 3,000,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel. Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy, Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST! Lower prices for Americans, especially our Great Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers, is my Greatest Priority. This is a very big and important announcement. Additionally, it must be understood, that Iran will not have a Nuclear Weapon! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP

Oct 09, 2026, 12:46 PM

Expression in tons is purposely confusing. To convert Trump’s announcement from metric tons to millions of barrels, we use the standard petroleum conversion factor for diesel (distillate fuel oil), which is approximately 7.46 barrels per metric ton.

Mathematical Breakdown

  • Immediate Supply: 300,000 Tons = 2.24 million barrels
  • November Supply: 500,000 Tons = 3.73 million barrels
  • Immediately Thereafter: 1,000,000 Tons = 7.46 million barrels
  • Short Period Delivery: 3,000,000 Tons = 22.38 million barrels
  • Total Promised: 4,800,000 Tons = 35.81 million barrels

Key Deal Points

  1. It represents less than a month of U.S. exports: The entire 35.81 million barrel multi-phase pool promised by Russia is less than the 48.7 million barrels that the U.S. exports to other countries in a single month.
  2. The immediate supply is a drop in the bucket: The “immediate” 2.24 million barrels amounts to just about 1.5 days worth of standard U.S. diesel exports (~1.62 million barrels per day).

Analyzing Trump’s Diesel Deal

Volume-wise, the deal is meaningless.

From an election standpoint, it’s an act of desperation.

Q: How desperate?
A: Very, because the deal is illegal.

The Graham Act Legal Contradiction

President Trump recently signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 into law to honor the late South Carolina senator.

  • The Violation: The law explicitly bars energy imports from Russia until its aggression against Ukraine completely ends.
  • The Fiction: The administration bypassed this law by claiming an unverified “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine to issue an OFAC sanctions waiver. Bipartisan lawmakers have already labeled this an outright violation of the very act the administration just enacted.

Trump Explains the Deal

Despite the lead chart, there is a convoluted reason to import some diesel. But there is also a much better solution.

The Regional Disconnect (East Coast Bottleneck)

  • The Problem: Most U.S. diesel exports leave from the Gulf Coast.
  • The Bottleneck: Moving Gulf diesel to the Northeast faces severe limits.
    • The Jones Act: Restricts domestic shipping to U.S.-flagged vessels.
    • Pipeline Capacity: The Colonial Pipeline operates at maximum capacity.
  • The Paradox: Shorter sea routes make foreign imports cheaper for New York.

Jones Act Diesel Stupidity

The Jones Act is the killer here.

The Jones Act—officially known as Section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act—was passed by Congress in early June 1920 and officially signed into law on June 5, 1920, by President Woodrow Wilson.

The primary purpose of the Jones Act was to promote US shipbuilding. It has failed miserably because US labor costs are too high.

Ironically, as a result of this sorry act, we import some diesel.

Also, the Jones Act makes domestic food so expensive to ship coastwise that it forces non-contiguous states and territories like Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico to buy foreign food instead of American food.

Direct Jones Act Agricultural Stupidity

  • The Mandated Trade Diversion: Because the law outlaws using cheaper foreign vessels to move food from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii or Puerto Rico, it acts as a structural tariff on domestic trade.
  • The Import Result: To avoid this “tax,” these regions legally import food from foreign countries like New Zealand, Ecuador, or Canada using foreign ships.

Now, how stupid is that?

Synopsis

  • The deal is economically meaningless and will do nothing for farmers.
  • The deal may save a few cents, if that, for the East coast, assuming we actually see imports.
  • But the deal is illegal and will never fly if someone with standing challenges the deal in court.
  • Trump does not care about illegalities. He pretends he is a king.
  • If we killed the Jones Act, we would import less food and no diesel.

Trump Humiliated by Putin Within Hours of His Ceasefire Announcement

Earlier today I noted Trump Humiliated by Putin Within Hours of His Ceasefire Announcement

What Trump Does Best

Looking like a fool is what Trump does best. He cannot control himself. And it does not matter the subject.

If Trump wants something he announces it. Legalities and constitutionality do not matter.

Reciprocal tariffs, birthright citizenship, the SAVE Act and mail-in voting executive orders, flouting the Epstein Files Transparency Act (EFTA), tariff rebates, $5,000 vote-for-me bribes, are examples.

Trump views himself as a king. He wants dictatorial powers so he assumes them, no more no less.

Regarding diesel, Trump must love getting bitch-slapped by Putin because he keeps begging for more.

His stupid war and stupid tariffs are going to cost Republicans the Senate in the midterm elections.

The Foreign Relations Committee reports Ranking Member Shaheen and Six Bipartisan Senators’ Statement on Legality of Imports of Russian Diesel Fuel

Today, U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Susan Collins (R-ME), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Thom Tillis (R-NC) and John Curtis (R-UT) issued a statement regarding the legality of Russian diesel fuel imports to the United States.

“Congress explicitly banned Russian energy imports in 2022 to prevent American dollars from financing Putin’s brutal war against Ukraine. Congress was clear: the U.S. should not import oil from Russia until it ends its aggression against Ukraine and ceases threats against our NATO Allies.

“President Trump’s decision to allow Russian diesel imports to the U.S. runs directly counter to that law. The Administration has also failed to consult with Congress or submit any explanation to justify its decision as required by statute.

“The United States should not provide Putin with a financial lifeline while Russia continues to kill Ukrainian civilians. The Administration must immediately reverse course.”

One gallon of Diesel weighs around 7#. (Varies from 6.8# to 7.1 #)
There are ONLY 42 gallons per barrel.
One metric ton is 2,205#
Total of Around 7.5 barrels per metric ton.
Comes out to around 133,340 barrels per million metric tons.

Sorry. Not 133,340 barrels per million metric ton.

7.5 barrels per metric ton is correct.

Now multiply by 1 million.

You get 7.5 million barrels per million metric ton.

I know very well the free market thinking as an ideal, but at some point, would not an export restriction on crude and refined gas help drop prices in the US.
I want a total ban on LNG since very few people in PA benefit from allowing companies to take the natural gas and sell it at higher profits overseas while jacking up our costs because of a “strain on local supply”.

I was going to explain why that wouldn’t work, but then I realized that you would be incapable of understanding it.

So instead, I will take your example a little further.

We should also stop our farmers from exporting in order to keep food prices lower in the US.

And stop Boeing from exporting planes to keep them cheaper here.

Hell, let’s just stop all US exports of everything. That will lower prices here. And there won’t be any consequences. Right?

Mish, another interesting subject that I know that “normies” are confused by: WHY did BidenCO cover up Biden’s dementia and why is TRUMP being allowed to short-circuit this coming erection?

I have theories only. You are the expert. Trump appears to be committing suicide. What possible reason, other than UTTER inanity, would the Republican Leadership allow this.

Is it possible that we truly have a ROTATION scheme going on, handing over power (for $$$$) or am I too cynical now to peer past my own biases?

Read some court cases on dementia. Biden had mild dementia, and no court would ever have ruled him to be incompetent to handle his own affairs, which would include his job. The remarks you make about the subject show you are way more clueless than you think Biden was. Trump is the President. The Republican party has no means of controlling him. He is the most powerful man on the face-off the earth, and there is nobody in the Republican party who can order him around.

On the other side of the control coin, who obeys him other than direct reports? Other countries have basically told him to pound sand. Iran said they would not enter into a peace deal with him as they do not trust him to honor his part. Canada and Carney are moving from dependence on US markets, again no trust in Trump. Trump is basically working himself into empty suit status

Hi Mish, there have been some exemptions from Jones Act since spring 2026 due to Iranian war. Exactly because of US Northeast and California. Some people complain that ships moving gasoline to California these days are Chinese ships.

The diesel deal is perfect deal for Putin. He can’t lose.

If it goes forward Russia makes nice money and no one in NATO is going to stop tankers loaded with diesel for Uncle Don regardless if the diesel is unloaded in the US or somewhere else.

If it doesn’t go forward it makes the wedge between Trump and some Republican Congressmen, between Trump and Zelenski and Trump and Europe.

Why Import from Russia?

Same reason why the US has just pressured the G7 (mainly the EU) to release 100 billion barrels of diesel from their remaining strategic reserves, TO CONTAIN DIESEL PRICES, which were skyrocketing everywhere.

Contrary to China and Russia, the US hasn’t banned exports and is unlikely to do so for geopolitical reasons so it doesn’t really matter much that the US is a net exporter of diesel if its internal market is not isolated and have to compete with higher prices wherever.

The US was the biggest diesel exporter (its net exports are about 1.3 mb/d) and now that the Strait is under Iranian control and Russia and China have banned diesel exports the US is *by far* the biggest diesel exporter . The 35.8 million barrels promised Russian diesel deliveries in the next 3 months would equal to 0.4 mb/d which is almost a third of the US’s exports. It is NOT nothing.
Especially when you consider that the EU’s daily diesel imports are about 0.6 million barrels of which 0.2 come from the US and 0.4 were coming from the Middle East and have been partially replaced by India (which is refining mostly Russian oil…). The Russian diesel deliveries would cover in full and without the “illegal” Indian imports all of the EU needs that the EU is struggling with for the next 3 months.

So, will this “deal” (Putin’s HELP to Trump at Russia’s expense, for the reasons I gave in your other article) lower diesel prices? No. Will it help to contain diesel prices? Definitely.

Trump Humiliated by Putin Within Hours of His Ceasefire Announcement

You repeat this BS so I repeat my answer:

While Putin actually extended Trump a courtesy (as usual) by not exposing the truth that the ceasefire was only a figment of Trump’s imagination, the cokehead in Kiev couldn’t resist the urge of humiliating Trump by promptly stating that he didn’t know anything about that ceasefire and even mocked him by saying that since he was interested in it he was eagerly waiting to hear the details…
So it was not Putin that humiliated Trump, which is what you keep on repeating, it was Zelensky.

  1. I have literally just showed you the numbers (talk about not paying attention…) proving that this injection of diesel on the world market DOES benefit the USA and, by being substantial, does help it control diesel prices, the same diesel prices that are hurting Americans (American voters…).
  2. That question is still waiting for an answer, that you too do not even attempt to give.
  3. Now I will also explain to you how this “deal” was made by Putin to help out Trump at Russia’s expense:

There actually is some well founded internal criticism about Putin agreeing to this “deal” since there was an export ban in place (which Putin lifted immediately after agreeing to sell diesel to the US and other international customers) and that export ban was there was a reason, a reason which is still there: Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries (which BTW actually are Anglo-American attacks).
What lifting the export ban will do is raising the diesel price on the internal market and with it raising the inflation rate and it will most probably also make shortages come back (Russia refines much more diesel than it needs and even with some refineries offline thanks to the export ban it managed to build a nice reserve, which is what the cuck in the Kremlin is now selling, with a small but nice profit it must be said, to the Americans and the others).
Contrary to the usual Western MSM propaganda bullshit which most people here blindly believe, the shortages of diesel in Russia were very small and above all very short lived and prices were at a level that the West can only dream of (even considering the average Russian’s purchasing power).

No you dind’t. Try to re-read my post.
The shortages were overcome by quickly banning exports and that (quickly) built up the reserves Putin is selling to help out your clown in chief.
Russia is in several ways benefitting from this “deal” but it will also be hurt by it and I and many other Russian critics of the cuck in the Kremlin feel that the net balance is negative.

China has a lot of spare refining capacity. Why didn’t Trump kiss Xi’s ass instead?

Trump is ALSO kissing Xi’s ass in many ways in case you haven’t noticed because your failing and declining Idiocracy has increasingly no cards to play not only against the other two major and ascending world superpowers but even against (also ascending) regional powers like Iran and even the (morally and humanly GREAT, the best of them all) AnsarAllah…

With China the issues on the line are so many that lifting the diesel export ban is not really at the forefront, especially because:

  1. China refines others’ oil (which thanks of the Epstein Fury operation is another one of today’s energy problems), Russia refines its own
  2. In normal times Russia used to export about 1 mbp/d of diesel, China only 0.3/0.35 tops mpd/d.

Thanks for the reply. And I will agree with these 3 points.

Yes. Russia normally exports more diesel than China, but China is the only country with spare capacity at the moment.

Yes. China imports most of the oil that it refines. But with crack spreads so high, it would be very profitable to refine more diesel for export.

Yes. China is an ascending superpower, while Russia and the US are declining.

China still has LESS spare capacity than Russia because its surplus was a third of Russia to begin with and because it has to battle with the difficulties/costs of procuring oil in the current environment.

Yes. China imports most of the oil that it refines. But with crack spreads so high, it would be very profitable to refine more diesel for export.

Yeah if you can get the oil and if you don’t care about building a strategic cushion against the very probable coming further shocks (which is part of the reasons why I call Putin a cuck)

Spare refining capacity has to be immediately available. How much spare refining capacity does Russia currently have that is actually online?

In fact, rather than spare capacity, Russia currently has over 20% of it’s regular refining capacity offline.

First of all, Russia has EXCESS refining capacity so even if it had (and it has NOT) 20% of it’s regular refining capacity offline you would have to relate that 20% to its excess refining capacity to establish if it actually is a problem.
Secondly, where are you taking this “20%” percentage? Oh, right… your always trusty and always 100% reliable Western Pravda… LMAO

For the umpteenth time: the export ban BUILT the strategic reserve (which Russia really had not much reason to have, the US too built its SPR in the late ’70s only because it had become a net importer of oil) and the few and short lived shortages were due to the disruption of local logistics (because of Ukro-American attacks, not because of lack of diesel) which were later greatly eased by building more local reserves.

Sounds like you are not the expert I thought you were about these matters and you also seem pretty dense and unable to understand the facts and numbers you are given.

Wasn’t it really clear enough? Stabilize. Better..?
They were on an unrelenting upward trajectory, they are now not only pretty stable but even slightly declining (both in the US and Europe).

They may (and probably will, seeing what the prospects are in the ME war theaters and even on the Ukraine front with the present energy war) start to climb again but this deal and the ongoing “forced” release of the collective strategic reserves WILL DEFINITELY help to contain (I still feel this is the best word to describe it) prices.

All of these are temporary, kick the can down the road measures, but that’s how Clown World has been operating since a long while…
The time of (very well deserved) reckoning will of course eventually come for everybody.

PapaDave

Nope. Not clear at all. Now you have added two more words.

“Stabilize” suggests prices stay the same. For how long?

“Better” suggests lower prices. Again, how much lower and for how long?

This is not a solution. It does not produce any new diesel, but merely shuffles where it gets transported and used. And the further you transport it, the more diesel gets used up in that transport (isn’t it ironic?). This does nothing to prevent global diesel inventories from continuing to drop. The only way to prevent that is to refine more diesel.

Unless the two wars end and refineries come back on line, the upward pressure on diesel prices will remain.

No, better was referring to my choice of words: do you like/understand “stabilize” better than “contain”?

Again, how much lower and for how long?

Already addressed, re-read.

This is not a solution.

This is also what I said, re-read.

It does not produce any new diesel, but merely shuffles where it gets transported and used.

What the fuck are you on? This “deal” and forcing the G7 to release more of their reserves put into the market MORE DIESEL (which has the exact same effect of producing more diesel!).

This does nothing to prevent global diesel inventories from continuing to drop. The only way to prevent that is to refine more diesel.

Unless the two wars end and refineries come back on line, the upward pressure on diesel prices will remain.

You seem flustered.

And you are the one who misunderstands.

It’s pretty simple actually.

Everything I said was referring solely to the diesel “deal” with Russia. Asking Russia to export some of it’s diesel does not change global diesel inventories because it does not result in more diesel being refined in Russia.

You seemed to think this deal with Russia would help prices. And I said the only way to help is to increases refinery output.

It really is: more diesel on the market side (made available for use and not in an emergency/strategic reserve) = better prices for the customers compared to the same market without that diesel.
All of this, of course, as long as that reserve diesel lasts.

Your really are being retarded.

Russia is currently importing diesel from India due to so many of it’s refineries being offline.

In order for Russia to increase global diesel supplies, they need to get their offline refineries up and running again. At least to the point where they don’t need to import from India. Then at least India can sell more diesel to the rest of the world.

Agreeing to export Russian diesel without adding more Russian refining capacity is meaningless.

Russia is currently importing diesel from India due to so many of it’s refineries being offline.

Russia has a diesel reserve and has been buying from India both diesel and gasoline/petrol (refined from Russian oil) in order to ADD TO ITS STRATEGIC RESERVES for strategic reasons, not because it lacks them or because its refining capabilities are not able to supply the internal market. Reserves have been GROWING since the start of the export ban and growing even more after importing from India.

That was a smart strategic decision (much like China and much unlike the US) and this “deal” with Trump is instead a political decision and (again) a contentious and much criticized one.

Agreeing to export Russian diesel without adding more Russian refining capacity is meaningless.

It’s not meaningless, it’s the result of a politcal calculus with both advantages and disadvantages. My opinion is that it has a net disadvantage, the cuck in the Kremlin thinks it has a net advantage.

Nope. Your imports are not to fill reserves. They are to make up for lost refinery output. Here’s some press releases from Russian officials. They openly admitted they need to import fuel because of refinery damage and market disruption.

Deputy PM Alexander Novak said Russia “will begin importing fuel in July”, including diesel, to stabilize the domestic market.

Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov confirmed that Russia “will begin importing petroleum products in July”, explicitly citing reduced diesel production from Ukrainian strikes.

Perhaps you truly don’t know what you are talking about.

In the official press releases BOTH of them used the word *stabilize*, none of them talked about insufficient domestic production and in fact the end result of these measures was that in only 3 months Russia’s spare diesel is alone almost half of that of the diesel the whole G7 vassals are releasing under pressure from Trump.

Russia has been importing from India since July about 1.5 million barrels PER MONTH OF BOTH DIESEL AND GASOLINE AND IS NOW RELEASING ALMOST 39 MILLION BARRELS OF DIESEL.
You truly don’t know what you are talking about.

Trumps statement is logical. His saying about Russian diesel to the US and global markets would be par for the course for any politician with an election coming up. Obviously there is no actual intent to import Russian diesel as it will all go to the global market. If anything it’s a loss for the US as any drop in diesel (even a few cents) will be a loss in export income on the large quantity of US diesel exports.
And any saving to US farmers is also a saving to your competitors who also export in competition to US exports.
And a more important issue for US consumers isn’t the high or low export price of diesel but the insane state policies in th US. Like why is diesel in Texas still cheaper than what Californian consumers were paying at the start of the year?

Is it really logical? Yes that reason exists but there is a counter arguement that another sop to Russia doesn’t make him look good.

I suspect that he didn’t even weigh this up and just went with his gut. I put a few of his speeches into ChatGPT and asked it to estimate the IQ of the speaker. It came back saying that it couldn’t really assess it as speeches are not an intelligence test (fair point) – however, it said the language is typical of somebody around an IQ of 98.

Of course Trumpsters will explain he is so clever that he is able to pull this deception off in order to play to the average voter. I’ll go with my own theory.

Most analyses put Trump’s speeches somewhere between about 5th and 8th grade on the Flesch-Kincaid scale, with vocabulary on the higher end and grammar on the lower end of this scale.

PS: 5th grade is the lowest grade considered in the Flesch-Kincaid scale.

I understand what Oceania does and why.

I don’t understand why RT, a state-controlled publisher, repeats even 25% of the same nonsense found in Oceania state-controlled media. I’m referring to these fictions:
– Interpreting the Trump-Zelensky theater as real.
– Interpreting the Trump-NATO theater as something other than a narrative to explain “burden sharing” (in the public record).

Why does *RT* amplify these Oceania-originated, Oceania-supporting fictions?

It’s similar to the cognitive dissonance manifest by describing Oceania as “agreement incapable” but referring to “the Spirit of Anchorage” as “something” not completely meaningless. RT does or, at least for far longer than made sense, did that too.

@ Feral

I noticed you recently mentioned “Russia falls for [some western nonsense]” repeatedly. Why do you think?

Is the reason something like GM suggests: Putin and the Russian oligarchs are simply trying to reestablish business as usual with their Oceania oligarch peers and think they are better served pretending to believe some Oceania lies rather than “out” every lie by their frenemy?

Also, the editorial board of RT is mostly Atlanticist from having lived in and having personal ties with the West. In other words, controlled opposition in Russia.

Russia does not want to end the West but to be allowed to join it. Hell, the Russian ruling classes would sell the whole of Russia for a single scoop of gelato in Tuscany.

This is foolish beyond measure, as the West has made it their sworn goal to end Russia.

Some truth to that, although Peter I wasn’t especially a Prussian fetishist, but worshipped the West in general. Same could be said for Putin and Russian elites.

Peter III, on the other hand, most assuredly did have a most unseemly thing for Prussia.

I forgot to include another bullet to the first two:
– Interpreting this paltry diesel “deal” as significant.

The volume doesnt seem significant to me. Why would Russia-controlled media make more of it? That, in and of itself, means something. But I don’t know what it means, since I dont know why they did it.

Is Russia trying to make the R’s lose this next election by helping D’s rile up their base with stories of “Trump-Putler collusion”?

Is Russia trying to make the R’s win this next election by giving the R’s a “positive” talking point?

I see it as a wash. And my overall question (prior post) remains.

In reality, the diesel would most likely be released to the world market as there would very little incentive (although there is some incentive as we currently are importing for reasons supported by your analysis) to import into an exporting country. So the numbers the that are belched out are also meaningless in discussion about impact on USA when you consider the marginal impact on world demand of 28-29 Million barrels per day.
USA imported diesel and other products from Russia up until The U.S. Congress passed the Ending Importation of Russian Oil Act (Public Law 117-109), which was signed into law on April 8, 2022.

It isn’t about diesel or diesel prices or Putin or anything real.

Donald is just trying to shift the blame for fuel prices onto Zelensky.
And there he is, leading the charge for American ranchers & truckers.
»Just another day in the Trump simulacrum.«

It’s also not just meaningless to American diesel numbers.
The money is also meaningless to Russia — what Russia doesn’t sell as diesel it sells as crude. For all we know it is diesel imported from Iran or China and then sold forward. So all the indignation is misplaced. Europe is still buying oil, diesel, nat gas, and LNG from Russia orders of magnitude greater.

With refineries in Russia and the Persian Gulf offline due to the two wars, there is still one country with excess refining capacity available: China. If Trump wants more diesel he should be talking to Xi.

Either that or find a way to end the two wars.

How about India, isn’t it importing Russian crude and exporting distillates, even to Russia itself?

PapaDave
PapaDave

India already exports about a half million barrels of diesel per day, and it travels all over the world, including to Russia. So they don’t have any more to add to this because they have no spare refining capacity like China does,

The Houthis are warning the US that they better not get involved in their fight with Saudi Arabia. They certainly appear to have no fear of Trump.

“If the US becomes involved in the aggression against Yemen, we will not deliberate over the decision to respond. Rather, there will be a swift and painful response targeting the US and all its interests in the region,” Houthi political bureau member Mohammed Al Bukhaiti told the AFP news agency in an interview.
