For months, ICE and Border Patrol agents have been firing chemical weapons inches from innocent people’s faces, spraying pepper spray into vehicles, with children inside, as they drive past. Yesterday, that escalation turned deadly: an agent fired his gun at a legal observer as she tried to drive away from an unlawful assault of a U.S. citizen. This isn’t rare. We have hundreds of videos showing ICE and Border Patrol illegally detaining U.S. citizens, assaulting U.S. citizens, and firing weapons at U.S. citizens.

DHS has lied about every single incident. Video evidence is the only reason the public knows these abuses are happening. That’s why this administration is trying to label people who film ICE and Border Patrol as “domestic terrorists.” But, the truth is the opposite: this administration is using ICE and Border Patrol to terrorize U.S. citizens. Filming ICE and Border Patrol agents is the only thing standing between the truth and total impunity.

As they went to leave, agents in a black pickup truck threw pepper spray into the driver’s side window, while passing in the opposite direction. The FBI had originally agreed to a joint investigation on Wednesday, said Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. On Thursday, the FBI said it would solely handle the investigation and would no longer provide state law enforcement with access to case materials or evidence. 

“Without complete access to the evidence, witnesses and information collected, we cannot meet the investigative standards that Minnesota law and the public demands,” Evans said. “As a result, the BCA has reluctantly withdrawn from the investigation.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Minnesota law enforcement doesn’t have any jurisdiction in the investigation. The FBI’s Minneapolis office didn’t respond to a request for comment.

In a separate incident on Thursday, a Border Patrol agent shot two people in Portland. Homeland Security said the agent fired a defensive shot when the driver attempted to run over agents.

Vice President JD Vance defended an ICE agent’s fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, citing “absolute immunity” and calling her death a “tragedy of her own making.”

Gestapo Tactics

Gestapo tactics refer to oppressive, often brutal methods used by a secret police force to control populations, involving intimidation, surveillance, arbitrary arrest, psychological torture, forced confessions, and making people “disappear” to crush dissent and maintain totalitarian power. Key tactics include using fear, terrorizing citizens through informers, creating a climate of suspicion, and bypassing legal processes to imprison or eliminate opponents without trial.

Essentially, Gestapo tactics involve using fear, secrecy, and violence to eliminate political opposition and maintain absolute control, characteristic of authoritarian states. 

Those arrested by the Gestapo were often held without judicial process. The power of the Gestapo was used to focus upon political opponents and ideological dissenters.

Apologies Offered

I have analyzed all of these videos and have come to the shocking conclusion that ICE Is Nothing Like the Gestapo.

Q: Why?
A: The Gestapo did not wear masks.

So, ignore the fact that Trump is using fear, secrecy, and violence to eliminate political opposition and maintain absolute control.

Ignore the fact that people are held with no judicial process.

Ignore the fact that people are deported to third world countries where they are tortured.

Ignore the fact that filming a crime can get you arrested.

Ignore the fact that people simply disappear and relatives have no idea where they are.

Ignore the fact that if you look Hispanic or Native American, you are racially profiled and you better have proof of citizenship on you at all times.

Ignore the fact that even if you have have proof of citizenship on you, you are likely to be beaten by racist goons.

Finally, please ignore the threats of door-to-door searches. After all, this is a “Christian Nation” and they are not coming for you … yet.

So, don’t be fooled. ICE is nothing at all like the Gestapo.

Tell me your politics and I can likely predict if you defend this as “Nothing Like the Gestapo”

I am NOT A CITIZEN, but.a legal Permanent Resident Alien–after 46 years in the USA.
Back then, PRA non-reporting status was given to me knowing my first allegiance would be to another country, but I brought significant advantages to the US to live here permanently.

I could, of course, apply for citizenship at any time, but why would I? To vote for morons of either party?

Never been searched, seized, profiled, tortured, etc. although I was threatened once with a $5,000 fine for not reporting the movement of my vessel within 48 hours–even though I had properly entered the US in Florida.

I agree with these people broke the law. Make the law stiffer. With that being said Congress has not passed any major immigration reform since Regan error. There have been time when dems had full control and republicans have been in control. Plus time for comprise at any point. Congress under republican right now could pass anything they want. You need to ask why are they letting trump do the dirty work. You could say corporations down to construction and farmers (prob most republicans) want the cheap labor. To some degree thats probably right. Imo the bigger picture is a consolidation of power in the hands of the one percent. Culture wars are all the republicans have because their policies do not help the average citizen. Ie you and me.
Trickle down economics / smaller government means less taxes for the wealthy: chance to privatize gov services and profit. / oh hear is one. Cut funding for programs then complain how inefficient government is / cut funding to the irs so they cant afford to investigate the wealthy.

I don’t know why any immigration reform was needed. You want to immigrate, you ask nicely and fill out forms. If you don’t do it right you get sent home or go to jail. Reform seems to mean “getting around the rules”.- “We deviated from procedure and now there are a million people here who shouldn’t be here, what do we do now?” Retroactively change the rules. The day before this event ICE removed a convicted murderer in MN, he was convicted in his home country. He was here and being a criminal.

Agreed along with that set a system in place that works.
How about businesses who need workers. Think tyson. Have to contact an employment service in say mexico. Tyson makes the decision to hire a person passes the interview. . They are vetted before the boarder. then show up at the boarder with a number etc. Processed with rules and timeframe and stiff consequences. Put the expense more on the business instead of the tax payer.

Want to apply for asylum. You have to go to a us embassy in a country adjacent to your own. File forms. Zoom court appearances etc. if you pass you get a number and processed at the boarder.

Sorry, no. The United States officially began to control its borders with the establishment of the U.S. Border Patrol on May 28, 1924. However, since British ships were sunk during the War of Independence, one could argue for 1776.

More importantly, it is irrelevant. There are now laws with penalties in effect which make crossing said borders illegal unless specified conditions are met.

You don’t know me, so you have a rather limited view. My point above is I came to the US legally. In fact, my government had to officially inform the US State Department that I was ‘allowed’ to leave. That approval was conducted to DC by courier.

Do you seriously believe that 10,000,000 illegal immigrants will contribute to the US as much as the programs run in the 1980s to recruit foreign grad-student geniuses at MIT, among other places? Back then, there were free rides, full tuition, travel, food, accommodation, health…all paid for in some cases.

They immediately exonerated the officer without waiting for an investigation. Dumb – because that clearly colors the feds’ decision to not cooperate with the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in investigating. Vance’s proclamation that the officer has “absolute immunity” is wrong & ridiculous. Could an ICE officer purposely shoot an infant in the head in their stroller and have immunity? Obviously not. It is the same here, we have had uncontrolled immigration for many years with every nationality here despite the climate and cuisine.

I would suggest most recent immigrants to the US are fleeing gangs, wars , poverty etc most probably from third world countries.

As I don’t live in a country with these issues as indeed do most Europeans there is no attraction to moving to the US. My wife, an East European , has lived in the US and has no desire to return there.

I know exactly what the US is like, I have probably visited 30+ times
,I have US friends and have experienced genuine US warmth and friendship. I should add that I’m white, in my 60’s, educated and not seeking US employment.

I will not have to work until I drop for healthcare and I don’t live in a car or trailer.

Laura has spouted crap here for a long time that shows a tenuous grasp of reality, her best was China will crater after Trumps imposition of tariffs, well they grew a backbone and didn’t.

OK, let’s say cops that shoot people, which they do. Cops shooting people is kind of a thing, cops mistake sudden movements for a threat, they shoot people running away, whatever, which actually happens at a rate greater than zero percent. Now let’s say EVERY SINGLE COP who shoots and kills someone is found guilty of either manslaughter, murder or attempted murder. If you find yourself in a business type confrontation with the police, you should be aware you can get shot for acting a certain way, or even COMPLYING FULLY. If the cop who kills you ends up in jail you can’t gloat HA HA you went to jail or threaten them with jail if you get killed. Everyone is arguing about whether this shooting was justified or not. That doesn’t matter at this point for the victim. Everyone is arguing on behalf of someone for whom the argument is of no consequence. You are only concerned with the continuation of events as you want to see them play out in your life. So you can forget most of what you are talking about and just say she did something really dumb, by any standard of reasonable risk taking, unless she intentionally wanted to give her life for a cause, which people do. If you intentionally give your life for a cause your death is rarely judged to be a crime. Yeah the Nazis were bad, she fought them, she died, you EXPECT that to happen. The conclusions drawn and subsequent events are an entirely different subject from whether this event SHOULD HAVE happened. If there could be some coordination with the local police and tell them, Hey Mr X is a convicted PEDO, Murderer and has other felonies and we want to come in and bring him into custody, lets work together on this , keep it as quiet as possible and usually less bad things are going to happen.

All modern police departments require psychological exams for prospective officers. That’s because a certain personality type is highly attracted to policing. This personality type loves dominating other people, it is how they prove to themselves that they are important and powerful individuals that others should admire. They have little problem hurting and even killing others. These are the “bad apples” people talk about in police departments. ICE goes out of their way to attract these folks. They do it for a reason: they want the violence and they want to publicize the violence. The reason is they know the MAGA constituency loves it. To Trump, it isn’t about deporting illegals, it is about the show of power and violence. And MAGA people love it because they are, at a much higher proportion, people of faith and not reason. The evangelicals can find lots of instances in the Bible to promote violence which allows them to wallow in their more base instincts.

Regardless of your view of the event with the car, ICE _refused_ to allow a doctor on the scene to attend to her, and _refused_ to allow the ambulance to drive up to the car she was in and they had to tramp across far distance.

ICE has a legal responsibility to render aid when someone is injured regardless and they did the opposite. All of them on site participated in this and are liable for it.

Gosh, it’s amazing how he remained standing, after “being struck by the car”, and continuing to fire 2 more shots while standing well clear of the side of the car, and then walking away without a limp or other sign of injury!!!!

Obviously he defies the law of physics 200lbs being struck by 3000lbs without effect, without toppling over or disturbing his aim. Never hit the ground that was all slippery from the melting ice there.

Statistically, more U.S. police officers die by suicide than are killed in the line of duty in a typical year. 

Police are a bigger danger to themselves than the public.

Police are a huge danger to the public and should be disarmed and only have non-lethal self defense options available with call up options like tightly controlled swat units in extreme situations.

When I watch these videos, especially of the ones with the children, I am reminded of Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and many other countries where oppression creates the desperation necessary to start creating genuine terrorists.

These people have little to lose and they live with the trauma of watching their family assaulted by people backed by the government.

Generally, I like your pieces. Read them every day. This appears to be rage bait. I find it hateful and somewhat ignorant, to draw an analogy to the Gestapo.

First, off I am a Libertarian by politics. Have been for decades. Registered independent voter.

My father’s extended family came from eastern Germany in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Poor farmers. Chain migration. Members that came would save and pay for more to come to US.

Part of the extended family was Jewish due to Christian men marrying Jewish women in the area, which was a poor part of Germany. (Yes, this actually happened.)

Approximately 60 members of the extended family made it to the US prior to the outbreak of the war, and about 40 were left in Germany. A large portion of those were Jewish. In 1945, at end of war, those 40 family members were down to 4. Only one family group survived. By walking 200+ miles westward to keep in front of the Russian Army advance and get to American Zone. Between German Police and Russian Army 30+ were killed. Including the children.

The Gestapo disappeared men, women and children into secret prisons and death camps. Killed them at scale. Absolute evil. Russians did the same.

While violence is occurring in our country, and it is not good, to equate that to Gestapo tactics is deplorable. Trivializes the suffering of my extended family and those like them.

Show a complete ignorance of history, and what true evil is.

Assuming that you’re right here, Mish, would that really be worse than having the Democrats come back and destroy civilization some more?
I think perhaps instead of just focusing on the Nazi Party, you might go back and think about the anarchism around the turn of the century (year 1900), World War One, the brief Communist takeovers of German cities, and the street battles between Communists and Nazis before the Nazis finally won.
You might also consider what the Germans regarded as the double-cross at Versailles, and the fact that it was a democratic election in England that brought to power a government that wanted to extract blood from Germany.
There is also the fact that the Western military leaders HAD to go on to destroy Germany utterly, when the Germans would have been glad to make peace, because otherwise the ignorant working class back home would have thought they were betraying the workers’ paradise in Russia.
Any competent leader of a great military empire will think about forward defense. That is what Trump wants Greenland for. He isn’t doing it out of some lust for military action.
The Danes are fools. I am reminded of something a mining company executive said to me about his failed project in Greenland: “They’re just like the Europeans. They don’t mind your coming in and looking around, but when you want to start DOING anything….”
Democracies don’t last forever. Empires don’t last forever. Civilization breeds stupid people (Democrats?), and stupid people destroy civilization. Anyone who wants to POSTPONE the end of his civilization is going to have to be ruthless. He might need to be a bit focused on the short term, too, to think it is all worth it.

That’s why talk of using ICE to “protect” polling stations in the midterms matters. ICE isn’t election-neutral, reports to the executive, and its presence alone could shift marginal turnout—which is exactly what midterms hinge on.

Mish, be positive. You are saving lots of money because you don’t have to travel to Venezuela, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya to get first hand experience. Therefore, if you have border controls how do you eject people who wander into your country unlawfully? Canada ejects about 10% of it’s 200k illegals each year and no one gets shot in the head over the process.

I dont think anybody is suggesting that some of these ICE agents are going to far, just like any police force there are cops that have no business being police officers because they have short tempers and do not react well in highly charged situations, they should be fired. But because they pepper sprayed someone, again in a highly charged environment, or roughly took them down I wouldn’t classify that as gestapo behaviour, I would classify it as highly unprofessional behaviour worthy of dismissal.

Black Swan events that cause financial Chaos are not always Derivative Scandals, Securities Mumbo Jumbo, Insider Trading, or other Financial Frauds. I thought for sure it was going to be Covid, then I thought Ukraine trying to join NATO with a predictable result, then I thought the aftermath of Oct. 7th. No one ever signs up for it. Some can plan ahead for flexibility and resilience, but once the dominos of financialization start to topple, alot gets knocked over before it can be stopped. A lot of debt has been acrued with correspondingly lacking colateral being created with that debt. Flipping securities and flipping assets with insufficient replacement and improvements of depreciating capital can only go so far. Our debt levels are way to high for what we have to show for it as a society.

Mildred Fish-Harnack grew up wanting to be a writer, not someone passing secrets between countries during World War II. In time, she could have become a well-known poet and scholar, if not for what she considered a greater purpose — becoming part of a Nazi resistance movement to fight the oppression and brutality imposed by Adolf Hitler.
When Fish-Harnack was guillotined on Feb. 16, 1943, she became the only American killed on a direct order from the German dictator.

Mildred Fish was born in 1902 and grew up in Milwaukee, a city with one of the largest concentrations of German immigrants in America. Fish’s family did not have German roots, but she learned to speak, write and read the language as a child, skills that proved quite useful to her in adulthood.
While pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1926, a student wandered into a class she was teaching, apparently lost. German graduate student Arvid Harnack introduced himself, apologizing for the intrusion; a relationship between Fish and Harnack quickly blossomed, and after their marriage, they moved to Germany in 1929.
The Harnacks relocated overseas at a time when the world economy was teetering. – tactics refer to oppressive, often brutal methods used by a secret police force to control populations. > Control is a word with many meanings, and so is Out of Control. As you mention that word specifically, for example as an example. If they are acting unruly, then control is used in a manner of authority to influence a peaceful situation. If they remain unruly, then they escalate to a Dominating Influence, in hopes that will do it. If the aggressors still behave in this manner, then a more forceful influence will have to be observed for Everyone’s Safety at this point! This may cause the Officers to utilize intimidation, arbitrary arrest, etc. Never a good situation to be in as the officer or the Person causing the conflict.

My aunt was a German Lutheran living in Luxenberg during Nazi occupation. Growing up, I heard stories of the Gestapo and their reign of terror. You were hung if the caught you out after dark. Citizens were terrorized as well as disfavored minorities. We aren’t there yet!

All of the referenced instances of excess are disturbing. That said, the article title infers that the thousands of ICE agents all are practicing these tactics.
This becomes similar to inferring all priests are pedophiles, all police officers are racists, all financial advisors are stealing client money etc.
The number of ICE interactions is in the hundreds of thousands if not millions.
There should be no tolerance of the acts cited and the bad actors should be terminated and/or charged. However, making this broad brush comment is troubling IMO.

If their fellow officers allow the “bad” ones to violate a persons rights, they are also “bad” and must be removed. They have a lawful duty to stop rights violations wherever, whenever by anyone when the see them, but they don’t.

In fact, they repeatedly do the opposite and make it clear to everyone, including ICE agents, that no conduct is too extreme. This is similar to how brownshirts were trained.

The question you should be asking yourself is this. What will be the line in the sand that causes me to escape this fascist regime? Do you have an exit strategy? It’s going to get a lot worse. Eventually every American who is not a Trump cheerleader will be subject to arrest, incarceration or murder. When will true Americans decide enough and take action, peaceful if possible, violent if necessary?

Could it start with a farmer protecting his long time worker? A church goer protecting a family who are long time members of his church? This admin should remember they are mortal.

the 1970s had literally hundreds of domestic targeted bombings. MIC Headquarters. ROTC, police stations and much more. more than one per day in the early 70s. we were much stronger financially and had much stronger men and women. now we are so over stretched and cannot fight a lick. haven’t won a war since 1945. i think this empire just crumbles mostly peacefully. only way we get violent in large numbers is if they shut off sportsball and netflix…………and food gets held hostage by radicals of all sides……………panem et circenses. bread and circus hold many empires together.
