Powell Warns the Markets and Trump that His Patience with Inflation Has Limits

Powell’s speech was to Harvard students but read between the lines.

Patience Has Limits

The Wall Street Journal reports Powell Says Fed Can Look Past Oil Shock, but Warns Patience Has Limits

Powell, speaking to students at Harvard University, laid out the textbook case for patience: Energy disruptions tend to be short-lived, and monetary policy works too slowly to counteract them in real time. He added a critical caveat, however, by noting how five years of above-target inflation made it harder to assume the public would simply shrug off another round of rising prices.

“You can have a series of these supply shocks and that can lead the public generally—businesses, price setters, households—to start expecting higher inflation over time. Why wouldn’t they?” Powell said.

Powell tiptoed away from saying how the Fed would answer that riddle. “We will eventually maybe face the question of what to do here. We’re not really facing it yet because we don’t know what the economic effects will be,” he said.

Over the last two weeks, Powell’s colleagues have amplified the message that the era of benign rate cuts—reductions the Fed could justify simply as unwinding its prior tightening—is over. Instead, they have signaled the Fed is likely to leave rates where they are until either the labor market shows signs of outright deterioration or inflation declines.

The Fed is Not in a Good Place

That was my analysis months ago. On January 29, I asked Dear Jerome Powell, Are You Sure the Fed Is in a Good Place?

On March 19, I noted Odds of Fed Rate Hikes Now Exceed Cuts Through October

Higher did not means odds-on, just more likely. Eight percent chance of higher and 1 percent chance lower.

I checked just now. For October, it’s now 4.3 percent higher and 6.7 percent lower.

The market believes rates are on hold.

Gasoline Prices Surge $1 from a Month Ago

On March 25, I asked Gasoline Prices Surge $1 from a Month Ago. Think this Won’t Hit the CPI?

Trump promised to lower energy prices. How’s it going?

US Crude, WTIC closed above $100 today. And it’s up again after hours to $106.38.

Gasoline prices are highly likely to rise above $4.00 tomorrow.

Trump Confirms Hormuz Is Not a War Objective

https://time.com/article/2026/03/30/white-house-signals-trump-doesn-t-require-strait-of-hormuz-reopend-to-ready-to-end-iran-war/

If true, then we are witnessing America’s Suez Canal moment and a dramatic shift in the global balance of power.

Amazing time to be alive.

I’d suggest it is true since the initial objective was the enriched uranium and remains the top priority.

I thought the initial objective was regime change? We’ve had so many half assed objectives it’s hard to remember which one came first.

The real and probably only objective was and is to bury the Epstein investigation. Seems to be working as planned so far.

Do not kid yourself. Uranium is an excuse. If it was about uranium they would have signed the deal that was negotiated – Iran offers to give it all up. Just like Venezuela was supposedly about speedboats. Speedboats now travel unhindered.

Tim, you should try paying attention to basic facts. Trump promised to liberate Iran’s people a while ago, at least as early as Jan 2, 2026 according to 30 seconds of my research, which you must have missed during however long you checked your facts:

If Iran shots and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue. We are locked and loaded and ready to go. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Like Trump’s Venezuelan Adventure, he says lots of things, most of them stupid. Sometimes it was about non-existent cartels, sometimes Trump babbled about democracy and human rights.

In the end, it was only about oil.

Well transitory meant like 2 years so how long does it take to lose one’s patience this time? As another commenter said “12 months of inflation above 2% is patient”….well, actually it hasn’t been below 2% since February of 2021!

But this time he means it! It’s all blather.

Such a lack of awareness, almost 750,000 troops became US citizens by serving in the military

but this year…

WASHINGTON — ICE agents will be stationed outside graduation events for the nation’s newest Marines to identify whether any of their family members are undocumented, according to the Marine Corps.

Real rates!Real rate is official rate minus hidden real inflation.
To kill the debt you need negative real rates.
This is what Powell is not telling you:he’s ok with strong inflation since a long time.

Markets? The whole world is on the edge of the abyss.

Australia is running out of petrol as is most of Asia. Airlines are running out of fuel. Shipping next.

Total chaos, everything lost and nothing gained except owning the libs.

Do worry, Trump will find a way to make things even worse.™

Wouldn’t you think Asia and Australia would be much more involved in finding a solution to this? It amazes me that they stand to lose the most from the continuation of the war and yet they are just sitting there watching it unfold and doing nothing.

You are kidding right – You want Australia and other nations who were not informed beforehand to clean up the US’s and Israel’s mess and solve the Strait of Hormuz disaster caused by Trump, risking the lives of their soldiers? You are one heck of a clown

You broke it and you want the rest of the world to solve the problem you caused – If your leader wasn’t a malignant narcissist and bereft of forethought.

All to distract form the Epstein files and his family’s corruption.

I don’t care if they clean it up or not. But those countries definitely will care when the oil runs out.

If an arsonist started a fire in your home or apartment building would you sit idly by while it burned or would you try and put the fire out? I know what I’d do.

What can they do? Diplomacy with the lying, backstabbing moron that started this all is impossible, air campaigns are useless, and any ship that gets close to the coast of Iran will be sunk.

They’re making deals with other countries and freezing out the USA, but that will take years to have any effect.

Well they could attack the US and Israel or at least threaten retaliation and drive the US Navy out of the middle east. They could jointly pay to rebuild Iran and sign treaties to protect them from further attacks from the rabid Israel and the USA.

There is absolutely nothing any of these countries can do to get Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz. India possibly could with a full scale land invasion of Iran, but Iran negated that with an agreement to sell India oil and allow their tankers through the Strait. Since the US doesn’t have anywhere near the capability to force Iran to open the Strait (as it has shown), there is no way anyone else does either. This is why no President has ever been stupid enough to attack Iran.

Yes, but Air Force One has fuel and Trump & Team have juicy opportunities for insider trading. Plus, we get to talk about something other than The Epstein Files.

So for Trump, it’s all gravy. As for the people who suffer, why should he give a shit?

OOOOHHH

Trump breaking the hidden agreement of policy makers after WW2: hide the effects of war from the public (go out and spend money!! as said by GWB after 9/11)

All the “burn Iran to the ground!” people know that Trump is willing to throw their “normal” lives into the fire and are, ahem, unhappy with the new reality

Good luck, folks!
