The War in Iran Is the Biggest Self-Inflicted Political Mistake in Decades

Iran is one of the least popular wars in history.

The Least Popular War Since Vietnam

Please consider The Least Popular War Since Vietnam by Lakshya Jain.

Before any politician makes a major policy change, they may want to ask themselves one simple question: Who are we helping with this?

Had Donald Trump asked himself that question before launching a war with Iran, he could have prevented what’s likely to become the biggest electoral cataclysm a political party has seen in a generation. New polling from The Argument shows that the conflict is even more toxic than George W. Bush’s war in Iraq, with only 33% of voters thinking it was right to enter, versus 55% saying it was wrong.

Voters are not OK with this war. In fact, the conflict in the Middle East has been so disastrous for Republicans that it’s allowed Democrats to open up a 6-percentage-point lead in voter trust on foreign policy. That’s the biggest lead the party has held in the year we’ve been tracking this metric, and it’s up from the 1-point deficit it faced on this issue in May, before the ceasefire with Iran collapsed.

Who Do Voters Trust on Foreign Policy

Fundamentally, I think Americans hate this war so much because of what it’s doing to their pocketbooks. It’s hard not to notice the inverse correlation that Trump’s approval rating has with gas prices. (It’s also important to point out that though this tracks with the empirical literature on the correlation between gas prices and approval, Trump is probably paying an outsized penalty because the price shock was a direct result of his specific actions.)

Democrats More Trusted on Every Issue but Crime

By itself, the deepening quagmire in the Middle East would be an unwelcome headache. But when it’s combined with a spiraling cost-of-living crisis, an unpopular trade war, and a chaotic and toxic immigration enforcement agenda, the picture is nothing short of disastrous for Republicans heading into the midterm elections. In fact, among likely voters, trust in Republicans now trails trust in Democrats on every single issue except crime.

For a while, Republican leaders have hoped that Democrats would be dragged down by perceptions that the party is too far to the left. As recently as this summer, in fact, they might have been justified in this expectation. Republicans were actually perceived as less extreme than Democrats in our July poll. Back then, 47% of likely voters said the Democratic Party was too far to the left, while 45% said the Republican Party was too far to the right.

But now the environment has deteriorated so badly for Republicans that this is no longer true.

More Voters think Republicans Are Too Extreme

As a result, Democratic odds of taking the Senate have never looked better, with deep-red states like Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska moving into play as Republican strength in the Midwest evaporates. Combined with a rebellion among Hispanic voters and a polling lead that Mary Peltola continues to hold in Alaska, Republicans find themselves outright underdogs in the Senate for the first time in the cycle.

This was unthinkable a year ago, given that Democrats have to flip at least two seats in states Trump won by double digits in 2024.

Pundits and analysts alike have a tendency to overdetermine results after they have happened and tell the story of an election with far more confidence than that story really deserved. But let me be clear: The current unpopularity of the Republican Party is the result of a series of entirely avoidable actions taken by the president. Trump entered office as popular as ever, and he has proceeded to summarily squander that popularity through a sequence of unforced errors.

Without a serious and sudden reversal in fortune, Trump is about to send his political party off of an electoral cliff.

Not Just the War

The war in Iran is the center of Trump’s mistakes.

However, Trump’s tariff policy and immigration policy are also unpopular.

Voters understand these three critical errors are all adding to inflation.

Add data centers to the mix of Republican problems.

Every republican I know, while happy to moan and complain about Trump, is still going to vote a straight republican ticket here in Texas. Maybe there are some republicans that might not vote or, God forbid, vote for a Democrat like Talarico, but, if they exist, I don’t know them.

That makes me think that the polls, while trying to do their best, might be underestimating the Trump/republican vote.

Voters kept making political mistakes from Clinton to present.President Clinton naively thought global stability could be achieved through trade with Chinese, who then weaponized global trade and manufacturing through monopolization. Bush 2 used 911 to invaded Iraq, which none of the hijackers came from. Obama set race relations back 50 years, as well as taking one giant leap to social medicine. Trump 1 tried to nudge China without leverage. Dementia Biden was a complete puppet whose administration usurped his power to advance socialism and even more cultural division that Obama. Trump 2 continues to have great ideas, but chooses the wrong tools which lead to horrible execution.

Voters during Clinton, Obama, and Biden were happy about bad long term outcomes. Voters under Bush2, and Trump incorrectly attribute bad outcomes with good initial ideas.

President Trump said “certain levels of inflation” could help pay down the national debt “very rapidly” in an interview with Time magazine

Well there you have it. The gig is up, the Fed won’t be doing anything to fight inflation, it will continue to run hot until you go broke. If only you had an exit strategy to get out the hamster wheel loop. If only someone had told you about it. If only….

And just wait till 2030 when 3 or 4 million more boomers are receiving more free handouts and taxing healthcare system to the max.

The basic job of the Fed (or any central bank) is to fund the government’s deficit, to make sure that there is never a situation in which there is only 25c left in the national treasury. Confusing the issue by the use of “economists” and teachers of economics is no doubt a subordinate part of that.

Japan was aggressively attacking the neighborhood trying to build an empire. Ruthlessly attacked China, then invaded Viet Nam. FDR put an embargo on Japan, depriving them of 90% of their oil supply. Japan retaliated by attacking Pearl Harbor.

And Germany in China. Germany and Japan grew closer during the 1930s. Germany agreed with Japan’s goals in China, SE Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, so they cut off China and green lighted Japan’s aggressions. Blaming the US for cutting off the oil and steel is FDRDS: Franklin Delano Roosevelt Derangement Syndrome. There was going to be a war with Japan. They tried a non-aggressive means of stopping them. It did not work. Because Japan had their little hearts set on conquering, along with Germany, ultimately, the world.

Pearl Harbor stemmed from the US moral hangover following the Japanese invasion of China, in which the US embargoed oil and metal to Japan.

The real Japanese goal was not so much the defeat of the United States, but the capture and securing of oilfields in the Dutch East Indies.

“The War in Iran Is the Biggest Self-Inflicted Political Mistake in Decades”

Only possible by having the biggest tool made into the biggest fool by you know who in the middle east.

But it ain’t over…dems taking congress with tools and fools like Cory Booker won’t change much. We need a polymarket for which tool+fool will feign war outrages the most then do nothing.

People have been commenting they are going to vote straight ticket democrat. Well that’s a good start but to get you-know-who out of government maybe vote straight Muslim ticket instead. Keep in mind I’m not Muslim but if that’s what it takes so be it.

I saw a comment on Zerohedge that went something like, “I’d vote for the hammer and sickle socialists all day if it gets Israel out of American politics.” That’s where we are right now with all of this. Some will vote for communists, others for Muslims, and yet others for socialists. The clock is ticking.

Do worry, Trump, Walrus, GOP, and democrats will find a way to make things even worse.™

I know I am voting for a democratic socialist and sending several of them money. Trump got where he did by promising a better life for the middle class and making the .1% fantastically more wealth while taxing the middle class with tariffs. America is so far behind the curve when it comes to improving society. It is crazy what is spent on healthcare and a large portion is parasitic. Corporations are getting handouts instead of being forced to help society thru fair taxation. moving the needle to the left will not hurt anything for awhile

I take it you mean that it has never existed. That is true to some degree, but if you use the words “individual liberty” and “freedom of enterprise” rather than “capitalism,” you might get a better understanding. Honest enterprise is always interfered with by the soldiers and the priests who together govern us all. But it is the honest enterprise that produces everything, and produces the advances in knowledge that make us better off. Sometimes, enlightened people in government help. But government as a principle is negative. In general, the only thing we can thank a government for is preventing a worse government. At present, that is getting doubtful, i.e. there is a question about whether any other kind of government COULD be any worse. But then you look at Venezuela, Persia, and the old Soviet Union….

Keeping old people alive when they should be dead and would rather be dead is a great growth industry. It’s very good for the people in it: they can look at their “customers” just as I used to look at steers when I was a cowboy. It also ties in well with the remnants of Christianity that some people still believe in to some degree: it torments people while pretending to help them, which just about sums Christianity up.

I wouldn’t go as far as you and vote for a democratic socialist or send them money, however. That is the surest way to make things worse. Crony capitalists are crooks, but at least they aren’t as stupid as socialists. Keep in mind that socialism is taken whole from the Christian moral system: bad is good and good is bad. I know a lot of people can’t think well enough about abstractions to be able to understand that.

Wonder whether Trump will follow Bibi in staying out of jail and in power by expanding and escalating “this” week while saner people try to explain what the bastards did “last” week and why we must reverse everything.

It’s like that Karl Rove paraphrase:

“We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors… and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

My 89 year old father-in-law is a Cuban immigrant who left in 1967 “escaping socialism”. He hates the Democrats because “they want to force us into socialism”. I try to explain to him that Cuba isn’t socialist. It is a totalitarian Communist state. That no democratic country has ever gone communist. And every state that became communist did so after overthrowing a right-wing dictatorship, or being taken over by a communist state. So the goal is never become a right-wing dictatorship. And the most likely person in the world to cause that to happen in the USA is Donald Trump. He believes Fox before he believes facts though.

Agree with Mish that the war on Iran was the biggest political mistake in at least decades. The only silver lining would be if Iran quickly assembles 10-12 atomic warheads of the 15 kiloton variety that could be launched from within their granite mountain bases – just enough retaliatory strength to dissuade Israel from using nuclear weapons on Iran.

Mish,

Since u r journaling Donald Epstein’s betrayals, check out Jon Fleetwood’s substack.

You’ll find articles with headlines like this: “Trump Orders EPA Framework to ‘Release Into the Environment’ Modified, Bacteria-Based Mosquito and Tick Technologies Without Informed Consent — New executive order involves what it calls “genetic modification” and “beneficial bacteria,” without identifying what will actually be released and without informed consent from citizens.”

There’s a typical headline.

Relevance? Many R voters voted for trump because they attributed the covid response and dangerous medical research to Fauci, Biden, and the D’s. Trump and RFK put up the “under new management” banner but aren’t changing anything. IOW, this is another example of the brand-new grand-old party betraying their supporters.

It was 169% pure comedy gold watching MAGA voters trying to explain away how Trump got the vaccine, and did so in public. Apparently it was a ruse to fool the gullible, not the world and wise sophisticates like MAGA.

To be fair, before Fauci became a Team D folk hero and vaccination became virtue-signalling, lots of democrats were loudly refusing to take any vaccine that the Trump Administration developed.

For the record – I am NO knee-jerk anti-vaxxer. I am skeptical of any vaccine rushed through so quickly (“warp speed”), and with such pressure to get results.

Perhaps I rewatched George Carlin too many times. But, I wish we would use language that better suits the gravity of the offense.

Some possible refinements, with the simplest first:

– “in” Iran — Why not “Against”? After all, the headline refers to it as self-inflicted mistake. “In” Iran — hmm, a civil war would qualify. I suggest “against” because that minimally suggests an external actor. That actor happens to be the actor doing the “self-inflicting”. So, it fits well.

– And why not mention the actor? “Trump’s War Against…”. Or “USA’s War Against…”. Or “NATO’s War”. After all, NATO members supported the attack (a few objections aside) and now Mark Rutte has said NATO should participate more.

– “Political mistake” — Why not “crime”? Doesn’t the UN charter, ratified into US law, forbid unilateral military action except under limited circumstances? Doesnt this war — started with assassinations under pretext of negotiations — violate that? The assassinations, in particular, should persuade anyone to disbelieve claims of good faith.

– “Political mistake” — Yes, it impacts elections too. But those don’t matter. USA has been warring against native Americans and then the world almost unabated since its inception. Trump already proved he cares more about sustaining the war than he does about popular opinion. It is not a political mistake for him or the oligarchs. It is them using political capital. (IIRC: “I got me some political capital and I’m going to use it!” -GWB)

Yippee says “democracy works” and that “assholes elect assholes”.

Evidence that undermines the claim:

The oligarchs lie to the people (about events in the past, present, and near future) to manufacture their consent. This is not what voters vote for. It is the opposite. It is not democracy. It is a lie.

Evidence that supports the claim:

– While USA continued occupying Iraq in a war that Joe Biden championed and D voters protested against, D voters voted to elect him to the highest office. Then he proceeded to immortalize himself as Genocide Joe.

– Trump proudly “took the oil” from Syria, told his Iraq client to invite an Iranian general for diplomacy and then assassinated him, stole Citgo from VZ, and more. R voters voted to re-elect him. Then he continues the genocide, continues the Ukraine war, and picked up where he left off with aggression against Venezuela and Iran.

Bioweapons research never stopped after WW1, for any major power. Every country is afraid another will gain an edge and break the original treaty against using chemical and biological weapons. Such an attack by the admin on its own people would be pointless unless there’s a vaccine and they’re ready for the robots to take over. Select chemical attacks would make more sense, like Saddam or Syria. It would put fear in people’s minds. Incendiary bombs were used in the Tulsa Oklahoma race massacre 1921. There was also a political coup in Wilmington NC in 1898. Jan 6th is another example for willingness. But it would be a bad idea.

So how does Trump prevent a democratic controlled senate and congress? He’s sending carriers to the middle east to create chaos and global war. Many people know this, hence the accelerated dumping of US treasuries.

Expect China to move on Taiwan if Trump pulls the WWIII trigger. Say goobye to the repair of anything electronic.

To think Trump will meekly go into the night is implausable. He’s going on the offensive right now.

JFK was willing to go nuclear with Russia over Cuba back in 1962 and now Russia is willing to go nuclear with the US over Kaliningrad. It makes sense to me. Back in 2014, American neocons had no business trying to destabilize Russia’s influence over Ukraine. Poor Ukraine!

There still is the risk of 9/11 being uncovered by what it apparently was: a CIA/Mossad job, masterminded by Netanyahu and Barak – as claimed by some – leading to the death of tens of thousands of US citizens. Reason enough to leave Israel to its own devices; i.e. total collapse within weeks. But then, everyone knows who is controlling US politics

Milestones:
FDR took years to bring a reluctant US public around, before 1941. He dealt patiently and honestly with the constraints of existing laws, like the Neutrality Act. He had to bring Congress around incrementally, meaning, the US people. The war had rousing and deeply-rooted public consent across the board, the day it started. Threats: Of course Pearl Harbor propelled it. Bush Senior made a very cogent case for Gulf War 1, and involved consenting allies. Saddam’s invasion of Kuwait propelled it. Bush Junior did a half-assed job of those things, I think lacking much of a solid case for war, and underplayed its costs and ease. But he got some years before (stupid) US masses finally figured it out. He had 9/11 at his back, which he abused to invade Iraq.Trump did ZERO of the above. He came in after a quick ramp-up, after the fact with a jumble of nonsensical rationales, that was insulting to the US people. Congress embarrassed itself.Of course whatever support there was, decayed from Moment One. It was utterly typical of his impulsive, poorly-conceived, undemocratic vileness. threats? he talked about 47 years of whatever, and fumbled the nuclear threat messaging, while he had already fumbled the nuclear threat issue itself.

USA was propping up pal empires (France, UK). Mosaddegh, it was claimed through the serious (though often murky) prism of the Cold War, was flirting with the commies. Ike didn’t want to deploy boots or nukes, so he steered things toward covert operations: much lower costs and risks, for many reasons. Later that mutated into all kinds of stuff. It’s easy to sit on a modern fence further distant from such bloodbaths as Stalingrad and Hiroshima, and righteously second guess such things. Choosing teammates meant choosing enemies. Sometimes those teammates are a bit dirty. Welcome to the world.

Perhaps tangential, perhaps not.

>> USA was propping up pal empires (France, UK).

Yes but a times rival empires undermine “pal” empires a wee bit in order to make them need help.

I think the Yanks undermined the Brits and the Brits undermined the French, at times. (French was at one time “the language of international diplomacy” and rivaled Britain in power. Then USUK bankers financed German rearmament, ww2 mortally wounded the French empire, and jt bled out almost everywhere but their CFA racket.). … European wars were sometimes between cousins; greed often overrides existing relationships.

>> was flirting with the commies.

You may turn out to be right about all this, but look at it from Trump’s point of view. He isn’t the sort of politician who follows public opinion: he wants to be a leader.

He saw an opportunity to create order and peace in the Middle East. It wouldn’t be a perfectly just peace, but are they ever? It would have benefitted Israel and pleased Jewish Americans.

It seems to have gone wrong, at least to some degree. But oil is getting out again, and the American public have finally woken up to their subjection to the Jewish lobby, so I don’t think it is all bad.

It may also be good that the Europeans are being forced to make an effort to look after their own defense again. That MAY mean an end to the worldwide export of depraved Anglosphere morality (women’s lib and racial equality), because there won’t be American soldiers in Germany to gently hint at following the line, but I think that is a good thing, too. I note that there are still American soldiers in Japan and Korea encouraging our depraved ideas to be adopted there.

We are looking forward to more American soldiers in Australia, but that’s all right because we have already jumped headfirst into the cesspool as far as morality goes.

I have a theory that women’s lib is always the last stage of decadence before a society collapses, and it is followed by a vicious religion that is unnecessarily cruel to women: a reaction against the decadence. I see Christianity and Islam as two of those vicious religions. I note that Christianity is also a torture cult: you will burn for all eternity if you don’t believe it, or even if you have never heard of it.

As long as the Republicans don’t lose the Senate to the point where the Democrats have a two-thirds majority, I think Trump can ride out the next two years. It won’t be good, but politics rarely is. Then we may hope that the Democrats will discredit themselves badly enough to lose the next presidential election. Or maybe your military will finally wake up and put a stop to the whole nonsensical charade. Remember that everybody in American who can think at all knows that your power rests on your pre-eminence in military manufacturing.

Trump may want to be a leader but he is lacking in a large number of areas. Ie. The ability to make good decisions, the inability to tell the truth, the inability to admit error, he is a pedophile, and his very nature is one of corruption, to name just five.

He has made a mockery of the office of president, of American democracy in general, of the rule of law and the US justice system, the army, navy, and marines, the medical system, and has made a fool of the US on the foreign stage.

Once he loses control of the senate and congress he will no longer have any control over GOP senators and congressmen and they will attempt to distance themselves from this burning wreck and will more than likely vote their conscious in an effort to get re-elected as Trump will be a lame duck with no future. Being the political creatures that they are they will likely abandon him en mass.

You have thrown a way too many things into the space here and it is not working. You lost me on D. Trump’s actions were motivated by establishing some sort of peace in the region. His objective has been solely to benefit Israel and to please the diaspora which has so much control over US politics. While being correct about that lobby power in US it most likely did not get you much support in this forum.
Christianity and Islam’s moral codex does collide with traditional perception of a woman as a sinner (as per a Hebrew bible) but your conclusions seem to be a bit of a stretch. Nevertheless, the anglosphere is leading the world in pursuit of decadence, lack of moral balances and out of control greed and ignorance, to name a few…. And in that sense, D. Trump is a true leader. Otherwise, he is just a showman, a TV personality, an actor.

If the Democrats were not saddled with their support for destructive open borders, radical antiwhite wokism, and cancel culture (among other very destructive views) they would win this election with a 150 seat majority in the House and by 20 seats in the US Senate. They are that bad. Both parties are controlled by evil, pernicious billionaire oligarchs. Unfortunately, the Republicans under Trump are now even worse. Trump will go down in history as the destroyer of the GOP, destroyer of what was left of the US Empire, and may well be seen as the destroyer of what was left of the American Republic. The GOP Congress is not much better. They richly deserve to lose.

As for the Democrats, they have now earned the position as the slightly less evil Party (Thanks to Trump’s total betrayal to his base) and should win by a comfortable margin in both the House and maybe the Senate. Unless a coalition of sane people from the left, right and center get together to form a third party, or manage to take control of one of the two major parties in 2028, I just may not ever vote again.

What part of Trumps immigration policy is unpopular? The 100K H1Bs that just got over turned?

His policies on illegals and the ICE tactics have nothing to do with immigration since illegals are not by definition immigrants, they are illegals.

Regardless, the price of gas (economy) is deciding this election, not immigration, not health care etc and that makes complete sense because people vote for/against whatever benefits them personally and high gas prices and raging inflation affects them more than all the rest combined.

That makes no sense. Of course illegal immigrants are immigrants. Immigrants are just a way to describe people who are coming into the country, legally or not.

How many Americans do you know that take issue with legal immigrants?

The fact that they came in illegally has nothing to do with the fact that they are indeed immigrants. Look at a dictionary definition of the two words, but they mean absolutely different things.

What most people assume when they are asked about which party is better on immigration is about the immigration policies of each party for those who come here illegally and the policies to control the border.

There are many who believe that no immigrant is illegal and support sanctuary cities and the other extremist nonsense of the extreme left. Then there are the hard right ‘deport them all’ extremists on the other side. Both of those extremes are stupid and ludicrous.

OTOH there are a lot of Americans who believe that we should indeed control our borders and not let any and all comers in at all times. OTOH they don’t agree with the current administration tactics that attempt to implement the ‘deport them all’ extreme of the hard right.

So, when Americans are polled about immigration, they don’t assume that the question is about legal immigration. That’s nonsensical, because it’s not a controversial policy.

And while I agree the economy is indeed the most important factor in people’s minds, do you seriously think that the other issues are not factors to many Americans? If I care about 6 issues, and I view one party as negative on 5 of them, it just makes me more likely to be motivated against them. There are many millions of people who will be voting in the next several weeks; statistically if you anger more than 50% of the voters on multiple issues, good luck trying to win an election.

I’d like to place a sign at the base of the Statue of Liberty that says, NO VACANCY.

The voters want cheap everything. Which is the one thing that they can’t have.
But they will vote for the party that most effectivly promises it.
The question is will there be enough left to rebuild on.

I’m surprised that some people are surprised by this. Look at this first term. Democrats crushed Republicans in the mid-terms because of Trump’s nonsensical COVID policies, plus his just generally hyper-partisan rhetoric. INDEPENDENTS DECIDE ELECTIONS!! Republicans and Democrats are both minority parties in the US. Independents make up about 1/3rd of the electorate. They react negatively to hyper-partisan antics as they are generally moderate. Trump isn’t bright enough to understand that. If you think the populace is anti-Republican now, give Trump 2 more years of idiocy and the GOP will be the TLP: Tiny Little Party.

In Trumps first term Covid didn’t happen till long after the 2018 midterms. It happened in the final year of his term.

Yeah if recall covid got the blame for the recession that had just started. Think trumps tax breaks a bit before covid kept the recession at bay for a few months.

The midterms were in 2018, how could COVID be a factor in 2018?
